  • NLNG:  Buhari congratulates stakeholders

…Buhari’s signature project back on the cards

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the board, management, staff and shareholders of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas company (NLNG), the NNPC and other Joint Venture partners, Shell, Total and AGIP on the signing of the contracts for the Front End Engineering Design (FFED) of Train 7 of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Project.

The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, welcomed the signing of an MOU between NLNG, “B7 JV Consortium” and “SCD JV Consortium”, on Wednesday in London.

According to him, it paves the way for the additional Train 7 that would increase the country’s gas production output from 22 million tonnes per annum to 30 metric million tonnes per annum.

The President also welcomed the commitment of all parties in supporting his administration to launch the “gas revolution” in Nigeria by ensuring the realization of Train 7, which has been stalled for many years under previous administrations.

He is optimistic that the significant step would culminate in a Final Investment Decision (FID) for the much-awaited multi-billion dollar Train 7 expansion programme by the end of this year.

The President noted that the signing of the contract for the plant expansion project after an eight-year delay is a sign of irreversible commitment by the Joint Venture to enter a Final Investment Decision (FID), and a clear indication that the confidence of investors is coming back to Nigeria following the good governance practices instituted by his administration.

Buhari also noted that the 7th train which is expected to provide some 8,000 jobs is not only important for the country, but also an important benchmark for the Niger Delta region, which rightly yearns for development projects.

As a former Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources, the President recalled with nostalgia that several signature projects, launched under his watch, which would have accelerated the growth of Nigeria’s economy, including the NLNG, had sadly suffered neglect and abandonment by succeeding administrations.

For instance, the NLNG had the goal of establishing 12 trains by early 1980s but the project growth was stunted. So far, only six of those trains have been commissioned.

However, with this signature project back on the cards, President Buhari strongly believed it is destined for his administration to complete the project.

”This project perfectly keys into the Federal Government’s ‘Economic Recovery and Growth’ agenda.

”It signifies foreign investors’ confidence in our country’s economy,” the President said.

  • Buhari, Ramaphosa to discuss killing of Nigerians in South Africa

Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa will meet on the sidelines of the ongoing African Export Import (Afrexim) bank Annual General Meeting in Abuja to discuss the killing of Nigerians and citizens of other African countries in South Africa.

President Ramaphosa of South Africa made this disclosure at the opening ceremony of the 25th anniversary and annual general meeting of Afreximbank in Abuja Wednesday.

When confronted by a member of the audience on the spate of killing of Nigerians in South Africa, Ramaphosa said his government was already moving against South Africans who are attacking citizens of other counties living in the country.

Ramaphosa attributed the killings to unemployment in his country “as a reason why there was so much antagonism against foreigners.”

He however assured the Nigerian audience that “we are cracking the whip against those who are attacking citizens of other counties.”

Specifically, Ramaphosa explained that “we have been exposed to unsafe environment; criminality and we have historically had a number of challenges to this regard. We have also had a huge problem of unemployment and people have tended to react in a way were they want to safeguard their own interest and express their fears and concerns through xenophobic attacks on other people, and our government have been very clear and strong on this. We will not support anyone who seeks to attack anybody on the basis of their race, their origin or the way they look and we are very clear on that.”

Thereafter he stated that as part of his working visit to Nigeria, he would “be discussing issues relating to security and safety of Nigerians living in South Africa and vice versa with President Muhammadu Buhari.”

As part of the meeting, he said he was accompanied on the visit by his ministers of defense, security and energy.

According to him, “we will not support anyone attacking citizens from other counties. South Africa received a lot of support from Nigeria and others and we are also ready to provide support to them.”

His government he said wants “to see relationship between Nigeria and South Africa improve exponentially. From now, relations between Nigeria and South Africa will improve tremendously. This will be a major plank of discussion between President Buhari and myself during this visit.”

Speaking to the need for mutual coexistence among Africans on the continent, Ramaphosa while delivering the keynote address said “there is already a draft agreement on movement of people and once this is finally ratified, it will be an integral part of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to ease movement of persons in addition to goods.”

South African he said has become an oasis attracting people from all over the continent, and has exposed citizens to unsafe environments.

President, Cyril Ramophosa said he has no doubt that the conference will develop practical framework that will facilitate Africa’s growth to achieving the agenda 2063 of the African Union.

He urged Nigeria to sign the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA) agreement which has already been signed by 44 countries in the continent.

In the case of South Africa, he disclosed that “after careful consultation South Africa  had no option than to join in the agreement.”

He said that other African countries look up to Nigeria and South Africa, hence the need for the two leading economies to sign the agreement in order to show their leadership role.

“As Africans, we should play the role we are endowed to play with innovation and talent which Africa is known for”, Ramophosa admonished.

In her presentation, Nigeria’s finance Minister; Mrs Kemi Adeosun when asked when and if the Nigeria government will sign the AfCFTA assured Africa leaders that full consultations were on-going with a view to getting the buy-in of critical stakeholders before Nigeria signs on to the AfCFTA.

Adeosun called on Afreximbank to invest more in the promotion of trade and investment in the continent and support more businesses to grow.

According to her, “we are tired of hearing the rhetorics- ‘Africa’s potential’ let us put it into action. As a government, we (Nigeria) are working to encourage real growth and sustainable trade within the African continent.  We must transform our national economies and we must transform trade.”

The minister urged Afreximbank to continue with its trade promotion and infrastructural development and expressed confidence that the meeting would provide opportunities for African businesses and shared ideas on how to develop the continent better.

She urged the meeting to take concrete steps at promoting and financing African investments, especially on development of infrastructure and factories.

During a press conference, President of Afreximbank Dr Benedict Oramah said intro-African trade strategy, is hinged on three key pillars “create, connect, deliver.”

The create pillar he said deals with the interventions we are making to ensure we produce the goods and services that will enter African trade efficiently, the connect pillar deals with all our interventions that are in place to link the producers to the buyers across Africa, the deliver are the interventions that make it possible for that connection to be done efficiently especially the logistics and related infrastructure.”

He noted that “under the intra African trade strategy which would lapse by 2021, we have started fully from January 2017, we planned that by the end of the five years that we would have disbursed 25 billion dollars. In the first year we did 8 billion dollars so we are well ahead of our projections.”

The disbursements he said are going to “support a number of credit and trade financing that facilitates trade in few African countries. We have supported the export of investment goods from Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria to many other African countries. Supporting trade in food, oil and so on across Africa.”

The money he added “has also gone to development of certain kinds of logistics that will support the trade. As we speak today we are developing industrial parks in Ivory Coast, we are creating the infrastructure that will help trade to occur. For example in Nigeria we are developing a testing and certification center to make sure that quality issues do not remain a constraint with trading in Africans in diaspora. So 25 billion dollars is the plan, in five years we have achieved 8 billion dollars in the first year so we are ahead.”

The president who spoke at the 2018 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) held at Monguno in the northern part of Borno State said his administration is also working  hard to bring to an end the farmers/ herders’ crisis  that have engulfed some states of the federation.

President Buhari after inspecting the military equipment on display also  unveiled the first indigenous made mines resistance ambush protection vehicle.
He described the choice of Borno for 2018 NADCEL as note-worthy as it will change the negative narrative of the Boko Haram crisis in the state.
He said “I am delighted to be in your midst in this 2018 Nigerian Army Day Celebration. I am particularly elated for the choice of the venue, which is northern Borno. The choice of this venue is noteworthy of assuring all Nigerians that the negative narrative about Borno is now becoming a thing of the past. “I want to use this opportunity to reassure Nigerians and the whole world that my administration is working hard to ensure the quick release of the remaining Dapchi girl, Leah Sharibu, and the remaining Chibok Schoolgirls from Boko Haram captivity. The President added that  “This year’s Army Day Celebration, is in line with my administration’s three cardinal policies, which are security of the lives and property of the citizenry, growing the dwindling economy and the anticorruption crusade. Thus, three years ago, when I took over as commander-in-chief, I made the promise which has been achieved today.”
Earlier in his address, the Chief of  Army staff, Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for personally  gracing the celebration.
He attributed  the success of the troops against the insurgents  to the  support the president has given to the Army.

He promised that the Nigerian Army’s will not rest on iys oars in the determination to consolidate on the successes recorded against the Boko Haram terrorists in the country.

  • Buhari has checkmated corruption in petroleum sector – IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), at the weekend said that President Muhammadu Buhari has checkmated the corruption in the petroleum sector.

Its National Secretary, Alhaji Danladi Pasali, who is also the National Coordinator, Buhari Campaign Organization, spoke while receiving members of the National Youth Council in his Abuja office.

He called for the re-election of Mr. President, stressing that under the president’s watch, the country has stopped the spending of 60 per cent of its budget on corruption ridden fuel subsidy otherwise known as Petroleum Support Fund (PSF).

He noted that with the intervention of the present administration, there is glut of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) market, which the retail outlets now beg motorists to buy.

His words: “It is clear now that petrol stations beg people to come in and buy products. Go round now, all the petrol rations have products and they are calling people to come and buy. It is better because there are no more queues. There is no more spending 60% of our budget to pay subsidy. We don’t experience this. So, the corruption aspect in the system has been checkmated.”

Explaining how Buhari has curb corruption in the petroleum sector, Pasali recalled in the past administration, an intending investor came from the US to invest $3billion in IPMAN refinery in Kogi, but the business mogul had a mechanical turn of mind when the then Presidency demanded a bribe to finance its campaign.

According to him, “There was a time some investors came from the US, when we went with the Governor of Kogi, they were ready to invest $3billion.

“When we took them to the presidency they were asked to bring some money for campaign, and since they took portfolio away they said they would never come back to Africa.”

But the IPMAN national scribe noted that President Buhari has brought sanity into the country’s oil and gas sector that was characterized by sharp practices.

He said “there was high level of insincerity, lack of focus,  sheer wickedness in the past systems, but now there is improvement.”

According to him, Dangote refinery is coming on stream in the next six month.

Pasali said that owing to how Buhari has made the environment investment friendly, some businessmen are now relocating modular refineries into Nigeria.

He said that discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Transport for the movement of cargoes of petroleum products through rails to reduce the cost of transportation of petroleum products.

The IPMAN National Secretary noted that upon the accomplishment  of the rail projects, it will result in the decline of prices of petroleum products.

  • How Ayade’s trailblazing project charms Buhari

The enormous demands of his office coupled with the complex nature of the federation makes the Nigerian President one of the busiest presidents in the world hence to get President Muhammadu Buhari to pay a visit to a state twice within three years is no mean feat.

This is why friends and foes alike have been wondering how Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade was able to bring the President to the state twice in three years, especially in view of the fact that both leaders belong to opposing political parties. President Buhari is of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while Ayade is governor on the platform of the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP).

Cross River is one of the few states the President has visited more than once since assuming office May 29, 2015. In fact the state was the first state he officially visited shortly after assuming office.

The people of Cross River say Ayade’s winning formula which attracts the president to the state is good governance.

President Buhari’s second coming on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 woke the sleepy but alluring city of Calabar, the Cross River state capital as it bustled with human and vehicular traffic.

Ecstatic and cheering Cross Riverians lined virtually all the streets in the beautiful city to welcome the president and show appreciation to their performing governor. The Nigerian leader was in the state to commission another of Ayade’s people oriented project, the Cross River Rice Seed and Seedling factory. The facility is the first automated rice seeds and seedlings factory in Africa.

President Buhari beamed with smiles as he commissioned the project. He was evidently excited by the multi-billion Naira magnificent rice factory and Ayade’s unwavering commitment to decouple the state from over dependence on crude oil driven federal allocation by investing massively in agriculture.

Essentially, Governor Ayade’s revolution in agriculture resonates across the state with the ongoing construction of rice mill in Ogoja, the cotton farm in Woda – Yala, the cocoa processing plant in Ikom, the banana plantation in Odukpani, the feed mill  and yellow mill maize farm in Obubra, as well as the ultramodern poultry  farm in Calabar for export of  frozen chicken.

Speaking at the event, the President described Calabar as home and said he was delighted to visit the state again in connection with yet another visionary project from Governor Ayade.

Buhari: “I must say that visiting the state for the second time within three years in connection with Governor Ayade’s people oriented project is heartwarming.”

The President expressed joy that Ayade’s agricultural blitz in Cross River is in tandem with his government’s vision.

“When we assumed the reins of leadership of our dear country, our administration launched a zero-oil economic roadmap as a way of making our country less dependent on oil, while encouraging investments in other sectors of the economy, particularly agriculture. I am happy Governor Ayade keyed into that policy and has today become a reference point in our agricultural revolution effort”, the President said.

He praised the governor for focusing on projects that are building a new economic base  for Cross River rather projects with short term benefits for the purpose of making cheap political points, saying Ayade “has keen eyes for tomorrow”.

Buhari is optimistic that seedlings from the Cross River rice factory will improve rice yield from the current national average of 3 to 4 tons per hectare to about 9 to 10 tons per hectares, thus helping to ensure rice sufficiency in the country, save foreign exchange and create jobs for the unemployed. The President thus directed relevant federal government agencies, particularly the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its anchor borrower’s programme to partner with Cross River state in the area of supply of seedlings to farmers.

Barely 24 hours after the commissioning of the rice factory, the presidential directive assumed life following the receipt of orders from Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) for the supply of rice seedlings to the tune of N2 billion.

An elated Governor Ayade said: “Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Rice and Wheat Production, Senator Abubakar Bagudu has confirmed that they are ready to take off every quantity we have got, so we have open order in excess of N2 billion”.

Pledging not to relent in establishing income generating industries that will not only create employment for the people of Cross River state but also reduce the state’s over dependence on monthly federal allocation, Governor Ayade praised President Buhari’s economic policies and assured him of Cross River’s support in that regard.

Meanwhile, the Cross Rivers state governor has disclosed that plans are underway to get the President to visit the state for the third time to commission the multi-billion naira rice mill in Ogoja when construction is completed.

Located within the Ayade industrial park which also boasts of the garment factory, pharmaceutical factory, the Cross River cosmetic industry, Noddles factory and Poultry farmer/factory, the Cross River Rice Seeds and Seedlings Automated Factory which is the first in Africa parades massive state of the art machinery and produces high yielding, vitamised and disease resistant rice seeds and seedlings. The factory is expected to generate a yearly income of between N70 billion to N100 billion.

  • PMB, end these killings now!

SIR: President Muhammadu Buhari during his campaign in the 2015 Presidential Election promised to improve on the fragile security situation among other campaign promises. Since his coming into power, we cannot say that the nation has had a relief from insecurity. All his efforts and that of his service chiefs are like taking one step forward and two backwards which leads to nowhere in particular.

In fairness to the President Buhari, the killings predated his administration. Whether killings by Boko Haram insurgents, herdsmen, or ethic militants, all these have been happening before Buhari came to power. For instance, in Plateau State alone, between 2010 and 2011, more than 600 people were killed in inter-ethnic violence or herdsmen versus farmers’ conflicts. The most gruesome was the massacre of 500 Berom farmers in Degan Nahwa by herdsmen on Sunday March 10, 2010. As a matter of fact, the killing by the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents was more, grievous and common during the Goodluck Jonathan presidency. Bombing of the UN Office in Abuja and other places are evidences of Boko Haram having free reign in Jonathan era. The fact that all have reduced drastically today is an evidence of Buhari’s effectiveness as a leader.

The unfortunate thing about the failure to end Fulani massacre of innocent souls is that President Buhari, in spite of his accomplishment in various sectors of the nation is losing the support of the people and playing to the hands of his enemies. Besides, his pedigree as an infantry officer in the Nigerian military where he rose to the position of Major General is being questioned. Buhari rode on the crest of his military pedigree to power because Nigerians believed then that he would be able to secure the nation more than Jonathan did.

The fact is that the time is running out for President Buhari on the issue of insecurity in Nigeria. The Sunday, June 24, strike by herdsmen in Razak, Ruku, Kuru and Gana-Rapp in Barkin-Ladi Local Government of Plateau State, where about 135 innocent souls including children were murdered has externalized the nefarious activities of the herders. The comment made by the UN Secretary General is an indictment of federal government. The Amnesty International disclosure that 1,813 Nigerians have been murdered in 17 states since January is revealing and unfortunate thing to happen in Nigeria during peace time. According to the report, the figure doubles that of last year which means that the nation’s security operatives have failed in their responsibility to protect Nigerians. The buck stops on the table of President Buhari to rise to the occasion as the father of the nation and nip in the bud, the senseless killings not only by herdsmen but by all blood-thirsty groups in Nigeria. Politics apart, shedding of human blood in whatever form is detested by God Almighty and a nation where innocent blood are being shed will know no peace or development. Buhari’s pre 2015 rating has dropped drastically due to various reasons which are not unrelated to his handling of the nation’s affairs. Year 2019 or not, he has to redeem his image and justify the confidence people reposed in him in 2015 by restoring peace in all nooks and crannies of this nation and stop the killing spree by herdsmen.

  • Lalong briefs Buhari on latest security situation in Plateau

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday got briefings on the latest security situation in Plateau State from Governor Simon Lalong.

Lalong briefed State House correspondents at the end of the closed door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said “My meeting with the President was the usual briefing. Well I have a great assignment; one, Mr President made a very timely intervention, not only him coming, I saw the Vice-President came and less than 24 hours the President was also in my state and I saw that kind of concern, that helped and encouraged me and we did our best to nip the crisis in the bud.

“So, after a while, now that there is relative peace in that place it’s my responsibility to come and say `thank you’ to Mr President, give him a brief and if there are other issues I will also discuss with him,’’ he said.

He said his administration had submitted some proposals and recommendations to the Presidency towards addressing the challenges facing the Plateau State including the killings occasioned by conflicts in the state.

While expressing satisfaction over the outcome of the meeting between President Buhari and the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), he said that the problems in Plateau had gone beyond the issue of `blame game’.

He said that all well-meaning citizens of the state must unite and confront the common enemies who were bent on causing chaos and mayhem in the state.

Lalong confirmed that already suspects had been arrested in connection with the recent killings in the state.

He announced the State’s amended Penal Code meant to strengthen criminal justice system in the state would be signed into law next week.

  • Group protest in Abuja, faults Buhari over killings

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations, under the auspices of Joint Civil Society Committee, on Wednesday stormed Abuja streets alleging that Nigeria has turned to a slaughter field under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
This, they said can be gleaned from killings of over 5,000 people from different parts of the country in six months by herdsmen, bandits and cattle rustlers, without any practical steps taking by the government to end the bloodshed, but have been busy making policies that protect cows and their herders.
The group that assembled at the Unity Fountain and marched through Shehu Shagari express way to the Presidential Villa gate, accused President  Muhammadu Buhari of non-challant attitude towards the killings that has made Benue, Taraba, Plateau and Zamfara states ” killing fields”.
Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman National Human Rights Commission, who protested with the group, said that the country is in danger, considering the fact that the killer’s have returned to the Federal Capital territory, with the seven  police officers who were murdered at their duty post.
Odinkalu stated that if Nigerian government has value for human lives, the National flag should have been lowered to show respect for the murdered police officers.
” The morning after seven police officers were massacred in Abuja, government should have  lowered the flag and  observe a minute silence, to commemorate the Nigerians killed. Wherever you go  killings have become by- words for massacre under the government that promised to protect us, we will continue marching until government recognizes that in a democracy, government is set up by the votes of the people and you will not be able to set up a government when all your voters are being killed.
” The president has to be forced to go to Benue, Zamfara, Taraba and when he goes he doesn’t see the victims, he holds up in state house and thinks that we should be grateful, we are not and we expect him as the father and human that he is to understand the pain we want to transmit”, he said.
The groups, in a joint statement read by  Yemi Ademelekun, while accusing Buhari of failing to fulfil the mandate of the oath he took on May 29, 2015, which among other things include to ensure safety and protection of all Nigerians, also demanded that he should take responsibility of all the killings and stop it immediately.
Other demands of the group’s include: ” the deployment of security resources across the country, part9 to communities vulnerable to these attacks. Considering the hefty budgetary allocations assigned to security by both state and federal government, the claims of a lack of resources will be an unacceptable excuse.
“Ensure that each Nigerian life is ascribed the same level of care as our political leadership- if mot higher. Ensure that the scales of justice are balanced. Not only must the flagrant impunity that has accompanied these killings and wanton destruction ends justice must be per I ever by all right thinking persons as been done”,they said.
Another leader of the groups and co-founder of Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement, Aisha Yusuf, chided President Buhari for not living up to his responsibility in ensuring that all Nigerians are protected without giving preference to cows.
She also urged citizens to rise up and demonstrate unity in confronting and forcing governments at all levels to assume their responsibilities and stop playing politics with scare lives of citizens.
” We are calling on the government to ensure that Nigerians are protected, the perpetrators of this heinous crimes across the nation should be apprehended.
President Muhammadu Buhari should assume his position as the Commander in Chief and not abdicate his responsibilities to God. We are tired of the killings and counting bodies. Nigeria is not a graveyard, we are not in a state of war and so the government must sit up and do its primary responsibility which is the protection of lives and properties.
” We are all victims waiting to happen, repeatedly the police will stop us from making a protest for a better Nigeria and we always say to them we are all Nigerians and if we do not do something it will affect us, what is happening right now is absolutely a failure of governance, there’s no good governance in the nation so we all must come together and unite to work for a better Nigeria.
” If we do nothing, it’s only a matter of time before  the criminals come after us and as long as we don’t do anything we keep on giving them enabling environment to keep attacking citizens, this is the time for us to get the perpetrators and let them know that if they touch any Nigerian, the Nigerians will come after you. This is not the time for the President to show a defeatist attitude, he says we should to God, we didn’t vote for God, God has given us all the capacity that we need to make Nigeria great”, Aisha noted.
