History will be kind to IBB, Says ADP

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the wise counsel of former President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida not to seek reelection in 2019, but prepare to hand over to much younger person who can move the nation forward.

However, in a statement signed by its National secretary, Dr.James Okoroma, the ADP said history will be kind to the former President for speaking out against what he described as leadership failure of President Buhari.

Okoroma said the former President was “clinical in his presentation by touching on the economy, pervasive insecurity, bloodletting across the country, devolution of powers, community Policing and restructuring.

“Babangida’s declaration that restructuring can no longer be wished away shows that there is hope for Nigeria. Those who thought that Buhari’s actions and segregation had the blessings of the entire North can now heave a sigh of relief with a serious opposition coming from another Northern leader of Babangida’s status.”

While aligning with the former President in appealing to President Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019, the ADP scribe said: “Babangida was one of those who fought to keep Nigeria one, he cannot keep quiet while Buhari destroys the Country through divisive and nepotistic leadership. Today, we are losing our Country on a account of Buhari’s misrule which has set the Country backward.

“Babangida’s advice that the war against Boko Haram be taken to the inner recesses of Sambisa Forest should be hidden.

“Babangida spoke as a Patriot. He offered solution to every problem he identified in his statement. He has spoken as one of the Fathers of modern Nigeria. The issues he has raised should engage the attention of all Patriots.

“History will be kind to IBB for speaking up against the leadership failure under President Muhammad Buhari. From all indications, the Buhari Government is a monumental failure and a disappointment to all Nigerians”.

Also, the Nigeria Intervention Movement (NIM) said the position expressed by the former President is a tacit endorsement of its agenda to recruit, groom and position credible fresh breed successor Leaders for the 2019 elections

NIM’s Deputy Director General, Mallam Naseer Kura commended what he described as IBB’s strategic Intervention on the crisis of leadership and politics rocking Nigeria. He said NIM is also compelled by the dearth of real political parties in the country to facilitate a major Rainbow political platform, modeled after the ANC of South Africa, to undertake the grooming of its adopted candidates for the 2019 elections.

Kura further asserted that “with this crucial endorsement of the third force initiative of NIM by IBB and other Eminent Leaders of the country, it means the time has come for fresh breed third force ideologues to rise up and take over the mantle of leadership to lead the country out of the present woods of political inertia and impunity, while also not shying away from NIM’s core agenda for profound democratic reordering of the Nigerian State come 2019”

  • Buhari not a murderer, says Presidency

Buhari not a murderer, says Presidency

The Presidency has condemned an opinion article published by a national daily, (not The Nation) associating President Muhammadu Buhari with the killings in Benue and calling him a murderer.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, made the condemnation when he addressed State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday.

He also frowned at the frequent expressions of hate speech published by some newspapers in form of news stories and especially in columns.

Shehu said: “We want to state emphatically that a segment of the Nigerian media is sinking deeper and deeper into the mesh of hate speech in spite of repeated appeals by recognised and reputable media bodies, the Government and concerned Nigerians.

“Unfortunately, self-regulation which is the norm in civilized societies has taken flight from many of our newsrooms.

“For instance, a recent column published in a national newspaper, said ‘President Muhammadu Buhari was the first to endorse the Benue massacre’ on New Year Day.

“The same columnist described the Minister of Defence, Mansur Muhammad Dan-Ali as ‘‘a dyed-in-the-wool Fulani irredentist who places trade over and above human life’’.

“The diatribe went further to invite citizens of the country to arm themselves and fight each other.

“In addition, one of the newspaper’s Saturday headlines proclaimed: ‘Expect More Blood in Benue…’

“Apart from the basic tone of respect expected from an individual who is supposedly intelligent and educated enough to know better since they have been granted space to write in a national newspaper, there is the risk of inciting the public to actions that will have gory consequences for the entire nation for generations to come.

“Those beating the gongs of war and fanning the embers of discord must remember what prevailed in Rwanda before the genocide of the early `90s, during which hundreds of thousands of lives were lost as a result of consistent hate speech spewing from that country’s media.’’

The presidential aide, however, stated that President Buhari, by the Constitution, had the primary duty of protecting life and property of all citizens irrespective of their geo-political backgrounds, adding “that is what he has been doing in Benue and across the country.’’

Shehu stated that calling the president a murderer was not only grossly disrespectful but unfair.

He said: “Calling him a murderer is not only grossly disrespectful but unfair, especially when the President has written a letter to the Senate detailing his efforts to quell the crisis in Benue State.’’

He further noted that the Minister of Interior and the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations were also dispatched for an on the spot assessment of the situation in the aftermath of the unfortunate incident.

The presidential spokesman stated that the president had also been receiving a direct briefing from the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim on the matter.

He therefore reminded the Nigeria press of its constitutional responsibility of promoting peaceful coexistence among the diverse socio-ethnic groups in the country through fair and balance reportage.

“We must learn to express our grievances and criticisms without resorting to gutter language or to name calling, and the press has a responsibility to maintain that even if it means calling their columnists to order.’’(NAN)

Video: Buhari, Obaseki meet over trafficking, illegal migration

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday held a closed-door meeting with the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The governor told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that Edo State government would partner with Federal Government agencies to tackle human trafficking, illegal migration and modern slavery in the state.

The governor said: “I discussed with the President two critical issues that bother us in Edo. One, is the issue of human trafficking and irregular migration.

“As you know it is a problem with Edo which we have accepted and we have rolled out our strategies to deal with them and we want to work with the federal government and other agencies of government to end this scourge of human trafficking and modern slavery.

“It is against the ethos of humanity for us to accept what is going on with our young people today.

“So, I came to see the President to explain what we are doing in Edo State and to solicit for more federal support for our actions.”

The governor said his administration had a plan in place to rehabilitate and reintegrate returnee illegal migrants.

He said already the state government had commenced monthly payment of stipend for the past three months to the last batch of the Libya returnees.

Obaseki said the first set of the returnees brought back by International Organization for Migration (IOM) had benefitted from similar stipend.

On the Benin-Auchi federal road, the governor said he received a pledge of support from the federal government.

“We did not spend a lot of money but fortunately the federal government has responded to the issue of the Benin-Auchi federal road.

“As I speak, the Minister of Works is now there inspecting the progress of that work, for those who have travelled on that road recently will see that the federal government has done something quite remarkable on that road,” he added.

  • Buhari to youths: watch character of aspirants

Buhari to youths: watch character of aspirants

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday urged the youth to be concerned about the character of those who aspire to lead Nigeira. He said they should offer themselves for service.

“Being apolitical, ultimately, does you no good as political leaders make decisions that affect you in many ways. As such, you should be concerned about the character of those who aspire to lead you, just as I urge you to offer yourselves to serve where possible. “

Yesterday’s admonition by the President came as the race for the general elections next year gather steam following last week’s “special press statement” by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which has generated a flurry of political activities, including  Wednesday’s  inauguration of the Obasanjo-promoted Coalition for Nigeria Movement in Abuja.

President Buhari, represented by a former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University  (ABU),  Prof. Shehu Abdullahi, told graduands at the 27th Convocation of the Federal University of Nigeria, Minna, the Niger State capital, of the need for mentorship of upcoming leaders to teach them the right thing.  ”It has become imperative as we mentor those who aspire to succeed us as the leaders of a better Nigerian,” he said.

Buhari described the youth as the greatest resource of the nation and urged them not to lose hope but to continue the journey of greatness they are destined for.

He urged specialised universities to key into the focus of government on the provision of infrastructure, agricultural and solid minerals development by positioning relevant programmes and faculties.

Buhari advised the youth to join the anti-corruption crusade.

“I assure Nigerians of our commitment to fighting corruption within the ambit of the law.

“However, we need the support of the youth and the entire citizenry to succeed.

“To this end, I implore all students, most especially the graduands, to rededicate themselves as ambassadors in this moral crusade,” he said.

Buhari said his administration was determined to address the challenges facing education sector, saying, “it is in this direction that we released N23 billion for the payment of allowances to staff”.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, said 3,741 graduands were conferred with various degrees and diplomas.

Bala said of the figure, 3,096 received first degrees with 62 bagging first class; 1,006, second class upper; 1,526 second class lower; 468 third class and 34 pass.

According to him, 426 receive masters degrees; 46 bagged doctorate degrees; 173 others will be given post graduate diplomas

In Abeokuta yesterday, former President Obasanjo continued his push against the reelection of President Buhari when he registered for the Coalition for Nigerian Movement.

He was not at the launch of the movement in Abuja on Wednesday but officials of the group, including former Governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun) and Donald Duke (Cross River) were in Abeokuta to witness the event.

After his registration, Obasanjo said the CNM is not a “third force” but a popular movement of Nigerians, irrespective of their political affiliations, to propel the country forward.

He said the leadership of the country had taken nation – building for granted, with citizens being robbed of their sense of belonging. Obasanjo noted that the composition of the present security apparatus of Nigeria negated the federal character principle enshrined in the constitution.

He said his earlier statement in which he chronicled many things that were not going on well and suggested  ways of tackling them, was not done lightly or frivolously or due to bad belle but out  of deep concern for the country.

According to him, Nigeria “must rethink and retool”, if the instruments being used in nation – building and governance since independence have served the country and citizens right.

He said CNM is the new direction to mobilise Nigerian populace for  true development, unity, cooperation, security, rule of law,  stability, welfare and wellbeing.

To the ex – President, if Nigeria must change for better, the real change should  be brought about by the youth and women, who he said were often the direct victims of things that weren’t working.

He noted  that the registration  was a follow-up to his earlier statement issued by him  about the state of the nation where he also offered his piece of advice.

Obasanjo explained that the current system had not given Nigerians what they wanted or must  have, adding that the new coalition would be “bottom – up” driven to give hope to the youths, dignity and encouragement to women.

” Let me emphasise important areas, programme, priorities or processes for improved attention. To start with, we seemed to have taken nation – building for granted.

”Nation – building must be given continued attention to give every citizen a feeling of belonging and a stake in his or her country.

” For instance, the federal character principle, as espoused in our constitution, was to guide the leadership to search for competent holders of major offices to be distributed within the entire nation and avoid the concentration in a few ethnic hands or geographical places as we currently have in the leadership of the security apparatus.

” To avoid such non – integrative situation, we have the National Assembly and the Federal Character Commission, both institutions which must raise alarm or call for correction of actions by the executive that violate the spirit of our constitution.

”In like manner, the spate of violence, criminality, organised crime, insurgency and terrorism have not received sufficient proactive ameliorative responses through transformational leadership – a determined leadership that brings cohesion and wholesomeness to the polity. Nobody and no group should feel excluded in his or her own country,” Obasanjo said.

Speaking on his meeting with President Buhari in Addis Ababa during the African Union (AU) Summit, Obasanjo said it was  baffling that Nigerians were surprised  that he could walk up to President Buhari to greet him, after chronicling the ills of his administration and advising him not to contest in 2019.

“I wonder why some Nigerians were worried why I had to pay respect to the Nigerian President; that’s my own upbringing as a well born and bred Yoruba boy.

“That doesn’t mean that what I have said about the President, which I did not say out of bitterness and hatred. It is evident that the President has performed, in some areas, good enough,  in other areas not good and a proper advice which he may take and he may not take.

“I didn’t do that out of malice or out of ‘bad belle’; I did it out of my respect for that office and my interest and I hope in your interest and the interest of Buhari in Nigeria.

“I went to him just before the beginning of the opening of AU Summit; I had gone round some few other presidents; should I ignore him? So, I went to my President, greeted him and we joked before General Salami said we should have a group photograph,” Obasanjo said.

  • Buhari salutes ‘gentleman, unifier’ Ekwueme

    Buhari salutes ‘gentleman, unifier’ Ekwueme

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Awka, Anambra State  declared that former Vice President Alex Ekwueme was a unifier of people and a complete gentleman.

The president spoke yesterday at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, during the commendation service of the late elderstatesman.

He was represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment,  Senator Chris Ngige,  who said it was the duty of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),  who would arrive in Oko community later in the day.

Ngige  at  the occasion lashed at politicians in Anambra,  nay Southeast, adding that they all betrayed late Ekwueme.

He said the late Ekwueme had distinction in everything he ventured into including politics,  but failed woefully in what he described as B and C (bribery and corruption).

“Politicians in Anambra and Southeast were not fair to Ekwueme because we betrayed him and that is the major problem here. Politicians in this state do not  agree that there is leadership in politics “

However,  the president, sympathised with the family of the Ekwuemes, the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano and the governors of the Southeast.

For the President-General of the apex Igbo socio cultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Ekwueme’s death should teach everyone the need to live a good life in the society.

He described the late former vice president, as a great iroko,  not only in Anambra,  Southeast but the entire country.

He said Anambra State should count itself lucky that all the blessings from God to the South east,  went to Anambra,  recounting how the state had produced all the firsts in the zone.

Former Senate President Ken Nnamani,  said Ekwueme made politics to be clean when it was not,  by not being linked in any wrong doing.

He said some people would always be fearing of being hounded by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),  adding that in Ekwueme’s case,  it was different because he lived a good life of emulation.

“According to him, politics is simply service the way Ekwueme saw it and that is the legacy he has left for everyone which was his own first address “

Also,  Governor Willie Obiano  recounted how Ekwueme championed the  creation of the six geo-political zones in the Southeast and the formation of G-34 that metamorphosed into the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the country.

He said Ekwueme entrenched democracy in Nigeria and showed the people that Nigeria should come first in place of ethnic consideration.

Obiano said a national monument should be named after the political icon,  describing Ekwueme as his mentor, councillor and advocate , adding that the former vice president would be difficult to forget by him.

Earlier in his homily,  the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese,  Most Rev Alexander Ibezim, said the fear of death had been the fear that had plagued every body in the society.

He said people were battling with the fear of losing Ekwueme’s wisdom,  fear of losing his counseling ,fear of losing his weighty presence and most importantly,  the fear of who would replace him since he died.

Quoting James Chapter 5 verse 13 from the Bible, Rev Ibezim asked, what is your life? , describing life as a journey.

He said: “We are not here to mourn Ekwueme but to celebrate him because of the kind of life he lived,  Nigeria has indeed,  lost a statesman “

“Who will replace Ekwueme,  who shall we run to in Igbo land” adding, there must be an intervention from God to save the people of South east.

Some of the dignitaries that graced the commendation service  included  former Secretary General of the Commonwealth Chief Emeka Anyaokwu

The governorship candidate of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA),  Sir Godwin Ezeemo,,  said Ekwueme  distinguished himself in public service as an honest man.

He said he had left a legacy for the politicians, adding that his infrastructural developments for his people should be emulated

“I pray that the present crop of leaders will take a cue from the departed igbo leader and by that,  this country will be a better place for all of us “ Ezeemo said.

Others were Senators Joy Emodi,  Ben Ndi Obi, Andy Uba, Nnamdi Eriobuna,  Ike Nwachukwu,  former governors of Anambra,  Dr Chin woke Mbadinuju,  Chukwuemeka Ezeife,  Dame Virgy Etiaba.

PDP presidential aspirant  Alhaji Sule Lamido, former president of Ohanaeze,  Dr Dozie Ikedife,  former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor   Prof Chukwuma Soludo,  former Minister of Health, Dr Tim Menakaya and the wife of former first president, Prof Uche Azikiwe among others.

  • ‘Corrupt elements opposing Buhari’s 2nd term bid’

‘Corrupt elements opposing Buhari’s 2nd term bid’

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) yesterday said Nigerians urging President Muhammadu Buhari not to contest in 2019 are those feeling the heat of his anti-graft fight.

CACOL’s Chairman Mr Debo Adeniran told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the voices of such people were loudest in discrediting the President “because they knew it was no more business as usual”.

Adeniran said President Buhari had acquitted himself remarkably in the fight against corruption, “leaving no breathing space for treasury looters”.

According to him, the cacophony of voices condemning all that the administration has done is proof of corruption fighting back.

He asid: “When you fight corruption, corruption fights back. Some of the recent voices condemning the President and asking him not to seek re-election are not honest in their assessment of his administration. These people are not comfortable with the heat of the anti-corruption war, because it is affecting them.

“They know things will continue to be difficult for them with President Buhari in power because of their corrupt ways. That is why they do not want him to finish his first term, let alone wanting him to get a second term.”

Adeniran added that the naming of President Buhari as “Anti-Corruption Champion in Africa,” by the African Union (AU), attested to the achievements of his administration in the anti-graft war.

He said the honour vindicated CACOL and others, which had endured scathing criticisms for supporting the anti-corruption war.

The CACOL chairman expressed optimism that the award will add impetus to the fight and encourage the President to do more.

Adeniran urged responsible Nigerians to support Buhari as “corruption cannot be fought and won by the government alone”.

  • Electorate should determine Buhari’s eligibility not Obasanjo – Minister

Electorate should determine Buhari’s eligibility not Obasanjo – Minister

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, says the electorate should be allowed to determine the eligibility or otherwise of President Muhammadu Buhari to re-contest the presidential election in 2019.

Shittu, who fielded questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday, said it was wrong for former President Olusegun Obasanjo to ask Buhari not to go for a second term.

“Obasanjo as a Nigerian has the right to hold an opinion. If Obasanjo holds an opinion that Mr. President has performed less than it should be, those of us who are in the position to know better has a right to also state the other side which perhaps Obasanjo is ignorant of.

“You see, there are some people who enjoy engaging in sensationalism. With due respect to General Obasanjo, if you take his history over the last 30 years, there is hardly any regime other than his own that he did not criticize except Sani Abacha, who didn’t wait for Obasanjo to criticize him before he was sent to the gulag.

“So many Nigerians know that Obasanjo enjoys this type of sensationalisation. In any case, no matter what impression you have of me, do you have a right to tell me not to contest an election? I mean we should talk like people who are educated, who know our left from the right.

“There are procedures for elections. President Buhari is a member of the APC and the APC has its rules and regulations as to how candidates will emerge. If members of the party feel that the president has not performed well enough, it is for them to show that during the primary election.

“It’s not for anybody to short change Nigerians and prevent people from offering themselves for an election,” he said.

    Cue out audio – Shittu

Shittu also dismissed the assertion that the inauguration of the South West Zonal Office of the Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group was boycotted by prominent APC members in the zone.

He said, on the contrary, over 2,000 APC supporters from six states of the South West graced the event.

He stated that inauguration of the office complex and the distribution of Buhari’s re-election campaign caps did not violate the nation’s electoral law as being insinuated in some quarters.

It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, on Wednesday at the Council Chamber of the presidential villa, stopped Shittu from distributing Buhari’s re-election campaign caps.

Shittu said: “It is true that the constitution and the electoral law talk of campaigns starting 90 days before elections, but there is no law stopping announcing intentions. There is a difference between campaigns and intentions.

“It is true that the constitution and the electoral law talk of campaigns starting 90 days before elections, but there is no law stopping announcing intentions.

“So, I plead not guilty to the issue of starting campaign before time. The best thing we could say is that it has been a pronouncement of an intention.

“The man himself has not declared but we are saying we will persuade him to declare his intention at the appropriate time and we are going to support him.”

The minister noted that the inauguration of the South West campaign office had also afforded them an opportunity to launch a booklet titled, “A Compilation of the Achievements of the Buhari Administration.’’

He said the booklet provided Nigerians the opportunity to have verifiable facts in hard copy. (NAN)

  • Ekweremadu to Buhari: Accept defeat if you lose in 2019

Ekweremadu to Buhari: Accept defeat if you lose in 2019

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday said President Muhammadu Buhari administration should not only conducts a credible, free and fair election in 2019, but to also accept the outcome of the election should he and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), fail to win the presidential contest.

A statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Mr Uche Anichukwu, in Abuja, said that Ekweremadu made the call at the Parliament of the United Kingdom in London.

In a lecture on “African Politics: The Dynamics and Lessons”, he urged the president to accept the outcome of the presidential election “should he and the All Progressives Congress (APC) fail to win’’.

Ekweremadu also decried sit-tight syndrome by Heads of State in Africa, describing it as a grave danger to democracy in the continent.

He said that his admonition became necessary owing to the pivotal and strategic roles Nigeria was playing in Africa.

The deputy president of the senate pointed out that for the continent to be respected by the rest of the world, Nigeria must not only lead the way but also earn the respect of the world.

“Former President Goodluck Jonathan put Nigeria on the global map as a leading democratic nation when he put in everything to ensure a free and fair election.

“He not only lost the presidential poll as an incumbent, but also willingly conceded defeat.

“In fact, he called the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, and congratulated him even before the announcement of the final results.

“In addition, neither former President Jonathan nor the Peoples Democratic Party challenged the outcome of the election in court.

“Therefore, to whom much is given, much is also expected,’’ he said.

He added that the onus was now on Buhari “to likewise provide a level-playing ground and show uncommon statesmanship if he and his party lose the 2019 presidential election.

“That way, Africa’s biggest democracy will further entrench the culture of peaceful and smooth transfer of power from a ruling party to the opposition in both Nigeria and Africa.

“Any attempt to manipulate the 2019 elections to the advantage of self or party will not augur well for peace and democracy not only in Nigeria, but the entire continent.

“In present age of technology, I will like to see the countries of Africa deploying the latest technology in voter registration, vote counting, and announcement of results.

“We must ensure that the process is sufficiently transparent and unarguably so, such that losers will see and be convinced that they lost fairly.

“That way, election tribunals will be eliminated”.

  • Why herdsmen/farmers clash, by minister

    Why herdsmen/farmers clash, by minister

President Muhammadu Buhari  yesterday  met with security chiefs on the herdsmen/farmers clashes in the country.

Minister of Defence Monsur Dan-Ali told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that it dwell on the general security challenges.

He blamed the blockage of grazing routes for the series of herdsmen, farmers clashes.

The minister said Nigeria was finalising plans to buy jets from the United States.

He said the ministry and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) had set up a committee to work out the modalities to transform the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons to a National Commission.

Asked if the solutions to the clashes were discussed, Dan-Ali said: “Yes we did. First I mentioned about this commission on proliferation of arms into the country. You see, whatever crisis that happens at any time, there is remote and immediate causes.

“Look at this issue (killings in Benue and Taraba), what is the remote causes of this farmers crisis. Since the nation’s Independence, we know there used to be a route whereby the cattle rearers take because they are all over the nation. You go to Bayelsa, Ogun, you will see them. If those routes are blocked, what do you expect will happen?

“These people are Nigerians. It’s just like one going to block shoreline; does that make sense to you? These are the remote causes of the crisis.

“But the immediate cause is the grazing law. These people are Nigerians and we must learn to live together with each other. Communities and other people must learn how to accept foreigners within their enclave. Finish!”

Asked if he was justifying the killings because of the blocking of the routes, the minister said: “You are going away from what I came here to do. However, this is internal security, I can provide some answers. I have told you that the remote cause is part of the grazing law. Since independence, there are clear routes where these people pass.”

On arms, Dan-Ali said: “They are all over. In that killings you are talking about, they are also militias that also did the killings. Some people were caught with arms and they call themselves Forest Guards or whatever with AK47. There is nowhere in this country where arms are allowed to be carried apart of legitimate security forces.

“So, anybody carrying any arm is doing so illegally. Militias were caught in the same land doing the same killings; so, the killings are not done by any particular group, its a communal issue.”

Asked what Nigerians should believe; that the killings were done by foreign terrorists or militias, Dan-Ali said, “Of course that is why I said they are militias. Militias are part of illegal immigrants. They are the people”.

According to him, the members of the National Commission are drawn from all security services with Office of the National Security Adviser, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Interior. It will be headed by a retired general.

He said that $494 million will be used to acquire the Super Tucano A29 jets from the US as well as training and continuous servicing.

He said: “Some of the stringent measures include that we will start having them from 2020, which is two years from now. They are also thinking of not allowing our technicians to be part of the production inspection. But this is what we normally do in all the defence contracts we send our personnel to go and understudy especially when it comes to specialised contracts like in Russia, our personnel are permanently based in where the production is being done for this MI35 helicopters,” he added

Reading the statement on the National Security Council meeting, he thanked the President, Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces for his continuous funding of the Armed forces to perform their constitutional role, especially as it is now fighting multiple security challenges.

According to him, he informed the Council that in line with the decision of the government to increase the strength of the Armed Forces to address manpower, the three services have in the last two years enlisted and recruited qualified Nigerians.

The Ministry of Defence, Dan-Ali said, is also building befitting accommodation for members of the Armed Forces in the six geopolitical zones.

“Similar accommodation was built by Defence Headquarters and commissioned by the HMOD in Abuja last month. This has gone a long way to solving accommodation problem and boosting the morale of personnel serving in Abuja,” he said

He added: “In compliance with the presidential directive for the establishment of National Commission on the Control of small Arms and Light Weapons in the country, the Ministry of Defence in conjunction with the office of the National Security Adviser, has set up a committee to work out modalities to transform the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PRESCOM) to a National Commission.”
