Amosun, Dalung, Mohammed to cheer Joshua fight

The Executive Governor of Ogun state, His Excellency Ibukunle Amosun and the Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung are among a top Nigerian government delegation who will be at the ringside on Saturday night October 28, 2017 to cheer Anthony Joshua against Carlos Takam in an IBF and WBA challenge billed for the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
The Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed is also on the Federal government’s entourage.

This move which was at the behest of the Ogun state government is geared at supporting the reigning IBF champion who hails from Sagamu when he faces the former WBC Silver heavyweight champion.
Takam replaced Joshua’s original challenger Kuburat Pulev who made a last minute withdrawal following a shoulder injury.

Dalung said that with the 2 West African neighbours having a healthy rivalry in the sporting world, Nigerians will be happy if Anthony Joshua defeats the 2003 All-Africa Games bronze medalist.

“Of recent, Nigeria has enjoyed the upper hand against its West African neighbours Cameroon. The Super Falcons defeated the Indomitable Lioness in their backyard to claim the 2015 CAF Africa Women Cup of Nations. Few weeks ago, the senior men’s basketball team beat Cameroon to advance to the semifinals of the FIBA Africa Cup Championship. The success of the Super Eagles against the Indomitable Lions where they snatched 4 points from the available 6 points to qualify for the 2018 World cup is still fresh in our memories.

“Another win by Anthony Joshua will confirm our superiority and how far our sportsmen have gone in recent years.”
A confident Joshua who took part in Wednesday’s open workout session at the St David’s Hall in Cardiff has promised to give his fans something to cheer about as he defends his world titles.
Despite being a last minute replacement for Pulev, Joshua will not be expecting an easy ride against Takam who has recorded 35 wins and just 3 losses in the 39 fights as a professional since 2005.

“I will be conveying the goodwill message of his Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari to him when I see him after the fight. It is imperative for him to understand how much the government and the people of Nigeria are proud of his achievements as our son.”

The current unified world heavyweight champion, having held the IBF title since 2016, and the WBA (Super) and IBO titles since April 2017 boasts of a flawless professional record of 19 fights, 19 victories and all of them coming through knockouts.

Nigeria saves N216bn from rice importation – BOA

Nigeria has saved over N216 billion from the importation of rice alone from Thailand and other countries since the nation’s domestic mass production flooded the markets under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP).

Prince Niyi Akenzua, the Executive Director, Risk Management and Finance, Bank of Agriculture (BOA) disclosed on Thursday in Ibadan when he visited Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Akenzua had led some other officials of the bank on the visit to the state.

He said that the figure represented a fraction of a staggering $22 billion (N7.92trillion) spent on importation of foods into the country annually prior to the advent of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Akenzua said it was worthy of commendation that the country had committed itself to diversifying from oil economy, with emphasis on revitalisation of agriculture.

He said he had embarked on advocacy visit around the country to enlist the support and involvement of state governments in ABP, which freed the country from reliance on importation of rice.

“We enjoin Oyo State to participate in the ABP as we have remodelled the programme to expand the scope of beneficiaries.

“The pilot scheme was so successful that $600m was saved from rice importation due to massive rice production in the country.

“One or two rice millers in Thailand have closed down because Nigeria, which has always been their major importer, has stopped importing their rice.

“We used to spend $22 billion importing food into Nigeria and with our consciousness that every square meter in the country is arable land.

“We felt that it was not sustainable. Of course, the crash in crude oil price has forced us back to agriculture,’’ he said.

Akenzua said that the state could choose a particular crop to produce under the programme, with a promise to co-fund or fund the production of such crop.

Ajimobi in his remarks commended the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh for the positive changes he had brought into the agriculture sector since he assumed duties at the ministry.

The governor stated that the fundamental problem besetting the country was attitudinal, stressing that the country was not bereft of knowledge, policies and programmes capable of enhancing its economy.

Ajimobi said that the state was supposed to be the food basket of the nation if past leaders had seen agriculture as a major solution to unemployment, hunger and economic driver.

According to him, the state is in good stead to be a major agric hub, judging by the concentration of reputable research institutions in the state and its vast arable land.

“The state is also strategically located between Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of the country and the North among other comparative advantages.”

He advised the new management of BOA to do all that is humanly possible to sustain the momentum in its renewed drive to revitalise the agriculture sector.

“You need to change the attitude of our people so they will know that there is money in agriculture.

“We are in this sorry state today because of bureaucracy and lack of sustenance of past agric policies. What has happened to Operation Feed the Nation?

“Don’t just talk the talk, walk the talk. In the past, some people will just give loans to themselves, which they knew they would not recover and this had crippled the bank.”

The governor stated that the state was ready to take advantage of all opportunities available in agriculture to promote the standard of living of its people.

The governor promised to lead by example by also venturing into commercial agriculture, urging the BOA team to advise him on how he could go about obtaining a loan for the purpose.

$2.1b arms deals: Ministers, perm secs, others indicted

Two ministers, three ex-ministers, six permanent secretaries and more military officers have been indicted in the $2.1billion arms deals scandal.

The indictment is in the fourth report of the Special Investigative Panel on Arms Procurement in the Armed Forces.

But one year after the submission of the report, the government is yet to take any action on it.

Some members of the panel are worried that some Presidency officials do not want the report released to the public.

Other members are feeling bad that the officials may have been interested in only the initial reports which indicted a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, two ex-Chiefs of Air Staff and a former Chief of Naval Staff.

They wonder why others implicated in the arms deals probe are yet to be named or handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A source said: “Going by the records of the panel, October 23 marked exactly one year that the fourth report of the committee was submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari.

“From the report of the committee, those who have cases to answer are two serving ministers, three-ex-Ministers, six permanent secretaries and more serving military officers.

“There is disquiet in the panel that up till now, no action has been taken on the report because some forces in the Presidency are unhappy with some of the recommendations therein.”

Members were expecting a swift response on the report as t was the case during the first and second batches of reports on Dasuki, Badeh, two ex-Chiefs of Air Staff,  and a former Chief of Naval Staff.

“And as part of the larger script to frustrate the report,  what came eventually was the suspension of the activities of the panel,” the source said, pleading not to be named.

“In fact, a member of the panel, Rear Admiral T.D. Ikoli,  died controversially while awaiting action on this same report. There were also botched attempts to use some committees of the National Assembly to review the findings of the panel. But the moves were resisted by the panel.

“Members of the panel are appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to release the findings in the Fourth Report and bring those concerned to justice,” the source said.

Asked to be specific on the list of those indicted in the Fourth Report, the top source added: “The names are in the report; it is left to the government to unveil them.

“Do not forget, all members of the committee have copies of the report. At the appropriate time, history will judge.

“We are in an era in which there is no hiding place for anybody. We are not a bunch of fools. That era is gone.”

Members of the panel are said to be feeling guilty, “as if they were used to only target some military officers, politicians,  businessmen and companies”. “These indicted military officers were their course mates, close associates and military colleagues. What they are demanding” is equality and justice for all, another source said.

Members of the investigative committee are: AVM J.O.N. Ode (retd.) –Chairman; R/Adm J.A. Aikhomu (retd.); R/Adm E. Ogbor (retd.); Brig-Gen L. Adekagun (retd.); Brig-Gen. M. Aminu-Kano (retd.) ; and Brig-Gen. N. Rimtip (retd.).

Others are Rear Admiral T.D. Ikoli ; Air Cdre U. Mohammed (retd.); Air Cdre I. Shafi’I;  Col A.A. Ariyibi; Gp Capt C.A. Oriaku (retd.); Mr. Ibrahim Magu (EFCC); and Brig-Gen. Y.I. Shalangwa – Secretary.

Some of the areas of investigation are:

    • how 10 contracts totaling $930,500,690.00 were awarded;
    • payment of  N4,402,687,569.41 for unexecuted contracts;
    • Procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at $136,944,000.00;

Adesina hails Nigerians for prayers, goodwill to Buhari

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Thursday commended Nigerians for the outpouring of prayers and show of goodwill to President Muhammadu Buhari since he returned to the country.

He made the remark while receiving a delegation of well-wishers to the President, led by Amb. Eze N. Ebere, at the State House, Abuja.

Adesina, in a statement by the Deputy Director (Information), State House, Attah Esa, said President Buhari deeply appreciated the prayers during his ill health, and after his recovery, from both the Christian and Muslim communities.

The Special Adviser also said the positive reviews on the President’s handling of conflicts in various parts of the country had been most encouraging for the administration, noting that the President remains focused in serving Nigerians, and ensuring an improvement in the lives of all.

“The President really appreciates all the prayers, and will like to say a big thank you for your support for his leadership style and handling of the conflicts,’’ he said.

Adesina assured the delegation of the President’s commitment and transparent leadership style, promising to deliver a letter brought by the group.

  • Maina: Garba Shehu has lost capacity for rational thinking-PDP

Maina: Garba Shehu has lost capacity for rational thinking-PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu to go for a mental evaluation.

The advice followed Shehu’s statement accusing past officials of the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration of being responsible for bringing the fugitive ex Pensions Reform boss, Abdulrasheed Maina back into the civil service.

However, Maina’s family members have come out to say that Maina, who was dismissed by the Jonathan administration, was brought back to the civil service by top officials in the Buhari administration.

In a statement on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party described Shehu’s statement as the height of absurdity.

The statement read, “We are not surprised on the postulation by Alhaji Garba Shehu in which he blamed the former administration of Goodluck Jonathan as being responsible for the return of fugitive Abdulrasheed Maina. This is to say the least the height of absurdity.

“The shenanigans surrounding the return of Maina who was under investigation and sacked by the previous administration of PDP is an issue Nigerians are privy to and even Maina’s immediate family have come out openly with their position that President Buhari was responsible for his return.

“May we, therefore, remind Garba Shehu in case he has forgotten, that the current administration is that of the APC and not PDP, so we wonder how PDP will be responsible for the mess created by President Buhari and his cabal.

“We had earlier in our response on this matter advised the government to properly investigate those responsible for this mess and bring them to justice and we still stand on that, because Nigerians are tired of excuses and blame game.

“We reiterate that the body language of this APC government in the fight against corruption is mere propaganda and road-show. The idea of blaming every misdemeanour on previous administration is symptomatic of failure to deliver on promises. It’s time Garba Shehu and his likes resigned if they have nothing more to contribute in government.

“Finally, we urge the APC led government to re-evaluate the inclusion of the likes of Garba Shehu in the administration. A man who is fixated on blaming each and every mistake of this government on the PDP has certainly run out of ideas, and must even have lost the capacity for rational thinking. We wonder the damage he may be causing to this country with his continuous stay as an Assistant to the President”.

  • Presidency: Jonathan govt officials, Maina shared loot

Presidency: Jonathan govt officials, Maina shared loot

The Presidency yesterday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lacked the moral right to criticise President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over the botched reinstatement of Abdulrasheed Maina.

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu described Maina as one of the monsters created by the former PDP government which are still active long after the party was defeated in the 2015 election.

He said: “Over and over again, the President Buhari government has pointed out that the administration’s greatest problem is the mess left behind by the previous government. Maina is just one more example

“Top officials in the PDP government, from sectoral heads, to those charged with responsibility for law and order received some of these billions of naira from Maina.

“We have all the transaction records and these are matters that the EFCC has been pursuing to ensure that they all have their day in court.”

Shehu alleged that some influential officials loyal to the previous government might have been the invisible hands in the return of Maina to the public service, despite being on the EFCC’s wanted list.

He assured Nigerians that President Buhari was determined to get to the bottom of the impunity that led to Maina’s reinstatement.

“Everything will be uncovered in due course

“This just goes to show us the scale of corruption that this government is fighting. And, as we can all see, corruption keeps fighting back viciously.” Shehu added.

The PDP said on Monday that it was “not too shocked at the steps taken by the administration of the All Progressives Congress in reinstating a supposed criminal and fugitive, Abdulrasheed Maina to office instead of getting him arrested.”

Barely 24 hours after his houses were sealed off by EFCC operatives in Kaduna, former Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms Chairman Maina’s family has said he is being persecuted by elements in President Buhari’s administration.

The family did not name such people.

They said Maina’s  “persecutions” was the handiwork of a cabal in government, which is witch-hunting him because he did not allow them steal pension fund.

The Maina family threatened that he would soon open a can of worms, which they said are capable of nailing the cabal.

The Maina family said he is not a fraudster but someone who worked diligently to save pensioners from thieves, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari was misinformed to have sacked him.

The family lamented that the “ongoing persecution” by a government that preaches the rule of law is bad, but noted that Maina has documents and facts that would vindicate him and show the true intention of his persecutors.

Addressing reporters  yesterday in Kaduna, family spokesman Malam Aliyu Maina, who was flanked by Salihu Maina and Ladan Abdullahi, said that the marking of the houses they inherited from their father in Kaduna by the EFCC was wrong. They threatened a legal action to protect their fundamental rights.

They said that Maina left Nigeria following threats to his life, but President Buhari invited him to come and help his administration.

Aliyu Maina said:  “It is on record that Abdulrasheed Maina’s reform put a stop to the fraudulent withdrawals of huge sums from both the Nigerian Pension Board, the Nigerian Police Pension Board etc. Perhaps it is this noble effort that made him enviable to the present administration when they came into power to convince him to come back and assist in its “Change” agenda.”

“Abdulrasheed was in fact invited by this administration and he was promised security to come and clean up the mess and generate more revenue to the government by blocking leakages.”

“He succumbed to the present administration and came back to Nigeria. He has been working with the DSS for quite some time and he was given necessary security.

“There is a letter from the attorney-general of the federation where he gave his own legal opinion regarding the court verdict which was submitted to the Civil Service Commission and the Head of Service respectively. So, one wonders why all the agencies and various individuals responsible for his return are now denying,” he said.

He, however, said that “you must have noticed the recent attempt by some cabal to ridicule and tarnish the image of the Maina family in the media. Where our brother, Abdulrasheed Maina has been blackmailed as a fraudster.

“The cabals have gone to the extent of marking our house in red paints with an inscription of EFCC under investigation. The EFCC is wrong in their action because Abdulrasheed inherited so many properties from his late father in Kaduna and Abuja, some of them were built before he was born so how could he have acquired them fraudulently.

“The entire family of Abdullahi Maina is categorically stating that our son is not in anyway a fraudster, rather he is a messiah who brought reforms into Nigerian Pension Scheme, whose effort saw the disappearance of pensioners roaming the streets of Abuja and other state capital in Nigeria”.

According to the family, the actions may have been targeted at not Maina but high above, “we are aware that all this act of calumny is not targeted against Abdulrasheed Maina alone but against the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria and the office of the Attorney General. We have contacted our lawyers Messr Mamma Nasir & Co and instructed them to act appropriately.

“We equally know that Abdulrasheed Maina is in possession of many facts that is against the cabal and interesting to the Nigerian populace, which he will disclose very soon,” the family noted.
