    Ooni extols President’s quality

The Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his 75th birthday anniversary, describing him as an incorruptible leader driven by uncommon discipline.

Ogunwusi, who is a co-chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, said this in a statement issued by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Comrade Moses Olafare yesterday.

He eulogised Buhari as a living extraordinary Nigerian leader globally known for relentlessly dedicated selfless service towards making Nigeria a better place to live in.

The statement reads: “The Arole Oduduwa, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II extends the warmest wishes of House of Oduduwa to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari as he today gloriously clocks 75th years of age. Mr. President is in no doubt an internationally respected Nigerian leader with a heart of gold who has worked tirelessly to ensure a better society with his unwavering message of justice, compassion, peace and human dignity which has made him an inspiration to people around the world.

“His very clean record speaks for him for he has from 1961 till date meritoriously served this country in various capacities as a young soldier who later became a General, as a Governor of Northeastern state, as a Minister of Petroleum, Head of State, as the Chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund, as an elder statesman and currently as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Hate him or like him, he remains worthy of celebrations and emulations as an extraordinary leader driven by uncommon discipline, whose relentless, dedication and incorruptible selflessness in the service of our country can never be ignored.”

The monarch prayed for the President and urged him to remain undistracted in his fight against corruption to make Nigeria a country of high global integrity.

“Kabiyesi Ooni’risa assures President Buhari of the unflinching support of the good people and the traditional rulers of Yorubaland. He also wishes him sound health, long life and plethora of fulfillments as he remains undistracted in his war against corruption with a view to ensuring a Nigeria of international integrity,” the Ooni said.

  • As the President clocks 75

SIR: President Muhammadu Buhari clocked 75 yesterday, December 17. He has reasons to thank God for where he has led him in earthly sojourn, especially, for His grace to recover from the ailment which kept him away for some time. As the president savours the joy of his birthday and miraculous healing, he should reflect on his journey to the Nigerian presidency and assess his performance so far.

It is undeniable fact that 16 years of PDP administration has inflicted injuries on the socio-political and economic lives of the nation, and this has created impediment for the Buhari Presidency. Nonetheless, as a person who had been eyeing the presidency for about 12 years before winning the prize and with his experience as a former Head of State among other top governmental positions he has held, he should have less problem in fixing the nation.

I will like to remind the President on his lamentation about the plight of Nigerian and the nation on the last day of his 2011 campaign as the flag bearer of the defunct CPC at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Thursday, April 14, 2011. Gen Buhari (rtd), as he was then, during his speech, which he read with tears running on his cheeks, said “any government that cannot solve the fundamental problem for the citizen is a failure”. The government Buhari was referring to was the immediate past government of PDP. Also, lamenting the enormity of the problem confronting the nation, he said “our tour across the country though not the first in my military and political career, has further shown me the enormity of the problems facing our people that need urgent and clinical solution, if the country is not to collapse before our very eyes. There are social, infrastructure and environment ills that have combined to inflict intolerably, hardship on our people”.

The president did not stop at that, he went further: “I already know as of fact that for a vast majority of people, electricity, affordable water remains unavailable and unaffordable. I have been told of how uncountable numbers of children drop out of school because their parent cannot afford to pay their school fees and how many more go without school all together”. Beside the above, Buhari campaign promises which are undeniable are fight against corruption, insurgency and insecurity.

As President for almost three out of his first four year tenure, has he solved the fundamental problem of the citizen? Also, “are the social, infrastructural and environment ills that have combined to inflict intolerable hardship on our people being addressed”? Not only that, are number of school children drooping out of school reduced or many more are going to school”? Lastly, are Nigerians enjoying uninterrupted power supply and is water running in our pipes?

I will like the president to look for a copy of his speech he delivered on April 14, 2011 from where I extracted the above quotations. He was at his best and burning with passion for Nigeria and her people. He should see how far he has fared in tackling the ills he criticized the PDP government for. Meanwhile, I will like to commend the President for improving on security of lives and properties by taming the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents and IPOB separatists. However, the menace of Fulani herdsmen is another source of insecurity which he should tackle headlong. He is equally commended for his fight against corruption. He has clearly done better than the previous administration. Nonetheless, Nigerians want to see guilty people behind the bars. That will prove the fight effective. Also, the corruption war should be extended to the states because corruption is not peculiar to the federal government and its agencies.

Buhari also deserves accolade for giving bail out and Paris club fund to the states, although it appears the fund was not used for the purpose they meant for, hence the hardship in the land.

  • How Atiku missed chance to be president in 2003, by Idahosa

How Atiku missed chance to be president in 2003, by Idahosa

Hon. Charles Idahosa, All Progressives Congress (apc) chieftain and Political Adviser to former  Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, speaks with EMMANUEL OLADESU in Lagos on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and why President Muhammadu Buhari deserves a second term in office.

Former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar recently dumped the APC for the PDP. What is your reaction?

The reasons Atiku gave for leaving APC can be likened to the old adage that  says ‘you give a dog a bad name in order to hang it’. I think he left the APC because he wanted to give a last shot to his presidential ambition and he strongly believes that that opportunity may not come if he remains in APC considering the fact that in the last presidential primary of the party in December 2014, he came a distant third.  That is the major reason why he left APC. Every other thing he said about his leaving APC because of lack of internal democracy and no future for Nigerian youths does not hold water. He needed to go but you don’t expect him to tell Nigerians that ‘I am leaving APC because I want to contest for presidency elsewhere’.  If you remember, he said the APC will be his final bus stop in 2014, meaning that he will not join any other political party again. Atiku is a man I know very well and I have great respect for. I have worked with him before in the company of other notable Nigerians like Chief James Ibori, the late DSP Alamieyeseigha and others. We tried to work for him in 2003 to realise his presidential ambition, but he missed it at that point.

How did he miss the opportunity?

Atiku was a protégé of the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. He has  a political machinery that cuts across the country. When Yar’Adua was in prison during the Abacha era, he confided in some of his lieutenants that in case he dies in prison, they should ensure they draft in Olusegun Obasanjo in order to compensate the Southwest for what happened to the late MKO Abiola.  Yar’Adua’s key man then was Atiku so Obasanjo was forced to work with him.  When Obasanjo was contesting as president, he had no money. Atiku provided all the funds. I know all this because I was part and parcel of the whole thing. Having agreed on Obasanjo, they needed people to execute the project. It was Atiku that called Chief Anthony  Anenih to lead the campaign of Obasanjo. I was the first person Chief Anenih took from Benin in 1998. We usually meet in one very popular hotel in Abuja. That was where the whole plans started before we went to Jos for the convention.  Atiku had already won election as governor of Adamawa State because that was his ambition then. But, Obasanjo insisted that he wanted him as his running mate. So,  he contested so he contested as running mate to  Obasanjo, despite his position as the governor-elect of Adamawa State. According to sources available to us that time, Obasanjo said he will do a single term but after that, he decided to go for second term. I was physically present at Rivers State Governor’s Lodge when the heat became too much and Obasanjo in the presence of all of us knelt down in front of  Atiku, begging him to allow him do a second term.  I think that was how Atiku missed the opportunity by agreeing to Obasanjo’s plea. He thought at least if Obasanjo completes his second term, he will handover to him but you all know the story of third term and that was how they fell apart. Atiku had the best opportunity to become president in 2003 and lost it. He had the support of PDP governors then.  Now, in the process of jumping from one place to another to realise his ambition, he has lost woefully.

But, do you see Atiku as a threat now that he is in the PDP?

Atiku is not a pushover.  The political machinery of the late Yar’Adua is very awesome and still intact. But Atiku as I speak today cannot be a threat to APC or President Muhammadu  Buhari if the president decides to run which I believe he will do.  We must understand that it is easier to destroy than to build.  Buhari is taking Nigeria through a building process and he is doing a great job. I once granted an interview that what we are seeing in Nigeria today is a result of corruption fighting back. What pains me today is the fact that we have a presidency that is disunited. EFCC fighting DSS. DSS wrote a report to the Senate against Magu, Acting EFCC Chairman and that report was used in rejecting his confirmation by the Senators. Yet, both EFCC and DSS are agencies under the presidency.  That is why at times I am sick and tired of attacking the leadership of the APC. When I criticise, I am only trying to help the party because I don’t have any other party to go to. If I retire from APC today, I just go home and that is goodbye to politics. I have no intention of going to any other party. It is unfortunate that we are not putting our house in order and this is a very crucial time for us because the election is just around the corner.

You said you don’t see Atiku as a threat to President Buhari. What if the votes of the Southsouth and  Southeast goes to PDP and both Atiku and Buhari share the votes from the Northern region and  Southwest in 2019?

Yes, it is going to be a very difficult election. There is no doubt about that. I have been part and parcel of these things for a long time, so I understand the political narratives in these areas you mentioned.  One thing we must understand is the fact that the 2015 election was easy for APC because it was  Jonathan.  Jonathan does not have any idea of governance. He was just fortunate to become Deputy Governor,  Governor, Vice- President, Acting President and President. The  North was really frustrated because  Jonathan broke the accord he had with PDP governors. One thing we must understand that this time around, it is not going to be North vs South.  If Atiku gets the PDP ticket and Buhari gets that of APC, it will be  North vs North and it will be a very difficult battle for APC. But  Nigerians are going to look at their track records and vote for the best candidate. It will not be a matter of APC or PDP.

But, I strongly believe that the APC still has to do a lot of homework because I am very scared. I read an interview by Ahmed  Makarfi  recently where he said the PDP is expecting a harvest of defection after Atiku’s move from the APC.  He now said and I quote “As a strategic reason, we don’t expect a lot of people to move to the PDP now. People are in APC for different reasons. Wait for the time when anybody will be on his own, you will see the influx of people into the PDP”. He said some of Atiku’s men are still in APC for strategic reasons. That is my fear. There are so many of Atiku’s supporters who will stay behind in the APC and leave at the last minute. Don’t forget what Aminu Tambuwal did to PDP. As Speaker of the House of Reps, he waited till the last minute before joining the APC.

These Atiku’s supporters who are staying behind in the APC, do you think their intention is to sabotage the party?

Of course! I just quoted what Makarfi said now.  He said some of his supporters are still in APC for strategic reasons. He also said there are those who are still in APC and didn’t move with Atiku for different reasons. So, the APC needs to be careful. Some people are in there to do havoc. We must understand that there are some corrupt people who don’t like what President Buhari is doing and they are APC members. They will do everything possible to make sure the president does not return in 2019.  Many of them believe if Buhari could do this in four years, what will he do if he now gets another four years?  So, we have to watch it in APC and put our house in order.

If you look at the series of defections have done all in his bid to become president, do you see a man who is passionate about changing Nigeria for better or man who is driven by personal interest to rule Nigeria at all cost?

I think Atiku has an inordinate ambition to be president at all cost. If he is in one party and he  knows his chances are not bright, he moves to another party and so on. Maybe, he has a reason why he believes he must be president, I don’t know but as far as I am concerned, he is in a better position to tell Nigerians why he wants to be president having been a vice-president for eight years. I think he is just being driven by the ambition to become the president of Nigeria and will stop at nothing to realise that dream.

You don’t seem to get along well with the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. Why? I am a founding member of APC and for those who know me; they know I am always for the truth. I say things the way I see it no matter whose ox is gored.  I don’t even bother myself about people’s reactions. What did I say in the interview? I said Oyegun is a sycophant who is always telling Buhari what he wants to hear in order to help him keep his job. Is that not what happened at the last caucus meeting of APC in Abuja? Was it not President Buhari that saved Oyegun from being removed when he called Asiwaju Bola  Tinubu and some governors for a meeting before they went for the caucus meeting? Even Oyegun himself knows what I said is the truth. All I am saying is forget the messenger and listen to the message.  Those saying I am angry because he didn’t carry me along don’t know me. Carry me along to where? They should go and ask Oyegun himself.  Since he became national chairman, have I ever called him one day to do me any favour or give appointment to anybody because I don’t need it. I  am not going to talk about Oyegun again. I have made my point and it is there for the records.

Do you think President Buhari deserves an automatic ticket or should be subjected to primary?

I think Buhari deserves an automatic ticket because in developed democracies, he has the right of first refusal as a sitting president.  But, I think the Buhari I have studied will like to go through primary so that he can set an example of real democratic process.  But, in my personal opinion, I think he should be given an automatic ticket so that we don’t waste money and energy conducting primaries, since we already know that he is entitled to eight years. But like I said, I think Buhari will like to test his popularity and I believe he will get the party’s flag.

What is your assessment of Governor Obaseki’s one year in office?

There is no doubt that Obaseki has done well. We are very happy with him; he has not let us down. He has brought sanity to the system. The way they now collect tax is more civil, nobody is being harassed anymore. The school system is being reformed. The only area we, as party leaders, are not too happy is that he should carry us along in the sense that the infrastructure he is developing across the state, he should also develop our stomach. He is a strong governor and honestly there is nothing he is doing today that he did not say he was going to do during his campaign. But my advice is that the developmental efforts should be gradual because most of the things he is doing now are for the future. He has an idea of where he wants to take Edo to and he has said he does not want to be distracted and that is why he decided to steer clear of party leaders. But I think that after one year now, he has been able to lay a solid foundation that will take the state to the next level. Like the Alaghodaro Economic Summit that he organized, only few people in the urban areas understand the idea behind the project and it is we leaders that will always pass the message or the idea to our supporters in the rural areas. He is thinking of the Edo of the future. But the truth is that Oshiomhole over-pampered us as politicians and that is why it seems we are feeling left out by Obaseki. But we now understand his style; it is not as if he does not want to see politicians, he only does not want to be distracted which is good.

Bello lauds FG over Geregu power plant

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has commended the Federal Government and other stakeholders for the completion of three turbines power generation at Geregu Power Plant in the state.

Bello gave the commendation at the 22nd Power Sector Monthly Meeting with power stakeholders and other participants held at Geregu Power Plc, Ajaokuta on Monday.

The governor expressed his appreciation to the Minister of  Power, Works and Housing, the President and the Vice President for the good job they had been doing in the power sector.

“Today, we are glad that there is a relative improvement in the power generation and transmission across Nigeria, especially in Kogi.

“The Federal Government has virtually solved all the power problems but we need a little patience to identify the communities which do not have electricity in Kogi to install the required transformers.

“I want to encourage investors to make enough investment in power distribution so that various communities at the grassroots in Kogi and Nigeria at large can begin to enjoy the benefits.

“When we assumed office, we met a dispute regarding Kabba Power Transmission substation, but we immediately waded in and resolved the issues for the work to be completed.”

The governor said that the state government had made efforts to reduce cases of reported and unreported kidnapping and armed robbery cases in the state.

“Without adequate security, the power plant here will not be safe and we will not be talking about generation, transmission or distribution.

“We have been supporting and equipping our security agencies to ensure that the contractors and their workers working on the roads are safe and secure,” he said.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola said that the power production had reached an all-time high of over 7,000 megawatts in the nation.

According to him, the ministry in collaboration with all the stakeholders has created a safe and more conducive environment to gain the confidence of investors in the power sector.

“On December 8, we reached an all-time power production of 7,000 and a great peak supply of 5,155 Megawatts, which Nigeria has never produced or generated that much power into the grid.

“The last supply was 5074 MW in January 2016, after which we went into a season of disruption of gas supply by militants.

“It means that our policies and programmes are working, and we are also now able to evacuate substantially all of that power by transmission,” he said.

Fashola expressed his gratitude to the government for paying the compensation that was militating against the development of the Kabba Transmission Sub-station.

Mr Adeyemi Adenuga, the Managing Director, Generation, Geregu Power Plant, said that the plant was handed over to private company on Oct. 1, 2013.

Adenuga said that the new owners had invested about 94 million dollars into the plant to bring it the present state.

“Right now, we can successfully run three units (turbines) comfortably, effectively and efficiently. So, we hope that from this meeting, we will get the needed loads for our machine,” Adenuga said.

Mr Otayitie Eminefo, the Special Adviser on Energy and Power to the governor, applauded the minister and stakeholders for their visit to the state.

He appealed to stakeholders to give priority to electrification projects in the state.

  • Why it’s impossible to impeach a President, by Dogara

Why it’s impossible to impeach a President, by Dogara

SPEAKER of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara  has foreclosed any possibility of removing a President unless the 1999 Constitution is amended

Dogara described Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution “a satanic verse” for making it impossible for the  National Assembly  to remove the President or Vice President.

He spoke yesterday on the topic: “Deepening Democracy: Role of the legislature” at the Third Public Lecture series of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he regretted  that with provisions of Section 143,   the President  can choose the laws to obey without any retribution, forgetting that democracy is a government  of laws and not of men.

The Speaker, however, noted that the National Assembly has contributed a lot in stabilising and deepening Nigeria’s constitutional democracy through strengthening of due process and the rule of law.

He said democracy cannot thrive without citizens’ active participation because it is the responsibility of the people to protect democracy and hold leaders accountable.

He said: “There can be no democracy without the active participation of the citizens. Any country where the government fear the citizens then it is a democracy.

“The legislature in Nigeria has contributed immensely in deepening the practice of constitutional democracy in Nigeria, especially since the introduction of the 1999 Constitution, in its various functions. If Democracy rests on the Due process and the Rule of Law, it therefore means that our Democracy can only be as deep as the laws upon which it is built”.

The Speaker noted that the 8th House of Representatives under his leadership as Speaker, has made outstanding contributions to deepening democracy in Nigeria through the faithful implementation of  its Legislative Agenda, which will serve as a compass of its legislative activities for four years (2015 – 2019) to deepen democracy in Nigeria.

Kenya’s opposition postpones ‘swearing-in’ of alternative president

Kenyan opposition has postponed plans to swear in its leader Raila Odinga as an alternative president, easing political tensions and opening a window for possible talks with the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Opposition coalition National Super Alliance Coalition (NASA) had planned to publicly “inaugurate” Odinga at a rally on Tuesday, Kenyan independence day, in what the attorney general said this week would be an act of treason.

Kenyatta was re-elected as Kenya’s president with 98 per cent of the vote in a repeat election held on Oct. 26 which Odinga boycotted.

He had beaten Odinga in the original poll, held in August, which was nullified by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds following opposition allegations of vote-rigging and other malpractices.

NASA said in a statement it would postpone the swearing-in after “consultations and engagement with a wide range of national and international interlocutors”.

It did not specifically name any mediators involved in the talks.

The coalition said it would be announcing a new date for the swearing in ceremony and the launch of its People’s Assembly “as well as a more vigorous and prolonged resistance”.

The plan to install Odinga as an alternative president had threatened to exacerbate rifts opened by an acrimonious election season that left more than 70 people dead in political violence.

The U.S. had also urged opposition leaders to work within the law and avoid actions like the proposed “inauguration ceremony.”

NAN reports that on Dec. 7,  Kenya’s Attorney-General Githu Muigai warned that any attempt to hold a parallel swearing in of a president would amount to treason.

Such an inauguration, he said, would worsen the rifts opened by an acrimonious election season, when more than 70 people died in political violence.

Muigai said unless a candidate was declared the victor in an election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and the swearing-in was conducted by the Kenyan chief justice.

“The criminal law of the Republic of Kenya stipulates that sort of process is high treason.

“It is high treason of the persons involved, and any other person facilitating that process.”

Under Kenyan law, treason is punishable by death.

Muigai said people’s assemblies proposed by the NASA, Odinga’s opposition coalition, were illegal as well.

“These institutions are unconstitutional they are illegal, they are null and void.

“The persons involved in their creation are involved in extra-constitutional activity and may be visited by the full force of the law,” he said.

The Supreme Court nullified the result, and a repeat election was held on Oct. 26. Odinga boycotted that vote, saying reforms needed to avoid “illegalities and irregularities” had not been made. (Reuters/NAN)

  • President and fair-weather friends

Sir: The exit of the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar from the ruling APC has brought into the open the crisis rocking the party which has been concealed for long. To say his exit would not have an effect on the ruling party is to call white black. Atiku Abubakar’s coming into the APC in 2013 or thereabout was significant as his exit. That APC will come to this sorry state with the effort put together by the founding fathers notwithstanding the opposition from the then ruling party could hardly be imagined. This means that like the French Bourbon in the 18th century France, APC has learnt nothing and forgotten nothing. President Buhari suffered untold hardship and denial before assembling the coalition that eventually helped him to realize his ambition. I think that he should not be looking the other way when the edifice is crumbling.

Analysts have deduced reasons for the exit of Atiku. One factor is that he is treated as an outcast by the party and the presidency. Two, his business interests is said to be a target for annihilation and so on. There is no doubt that a cabal is surrounding the president as the case with all political office holders. However, it is heart rendering that this set of people are often times fair weather friends who contributed nothing to the electoral victory of the president or whosoever. This people always fan the ember of discord between the political office holders and their benefactors through the advice and activities which are centred on self-aggrandizement.

This happened during President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency when jobbers pitched him against his benefactor and godfather, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. The former president is living to tell the story while some of the demagogues are worming around President Buhari for patronages or actually benefitting from the present order. It is doubtful if President Buhari is enjoying the support of all those who supported his aspiration in the past, in spite of his glaring accomplishments. This is because most of them have been abandoned.

To make the matter worse is the failure of the federal government to constitute the boards of federal agencies and parastatals. Doing this could have empowered party members, some of who rejected financial inducement from the Jonathan presidency. It should not surprise us that many PDP members are still serving on some of the boards of federal agencies and parastatals. What is happening at the federal level is repeating itself in the states except few like Lagos and others.

It is amazing that as people are exiting the ruling party, others are coming in; that is politics. However, the most important thing to note is the calibre of those exiting and that of the new comers. In the case of the new comers in APC, it is glaring that majority are former public office holders running away from the long arm of law. They will do all to please the president. Some others are political jobbers who are out to corner political appointments from the president. Most of them have no base politically and would not mind returning to their former parties if they could not achieve their aims in the ruling party. These are fair weather friends milling around the president. Buhari should beware of them.

Buhari approves new measures to check terrorist activities

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the request of the Minister of Defence, Brig-Gen. Mansur Dan Ali (rtd) for the stationing of a full battalion of Special Forces in Zamfara to check activities of bandits in the state.

The president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, said Buhari also approved the commencement of the newly-established 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto in the new Order of Battle (OBAT).

The presidential aide revealed that Buhari also ordered a military crackdown on bandits operating in rural communities in Zamfara.

He said the president’s order followed fresh attacks on some communities in Shinkafi and Maradun Local Government Areas of the state.

The President has also approved the movement of the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army from Sokoto to Gusau upon the take-off of the 8 Division.

“To tackle the desperate actions of Boko Haram terrorists in the North-east, through the use of mostly female, underage girls as suicide bombers, President Buhari has equally approved the setting up of an intelligence fusion centre in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, for the purpose of gathering and sharing intelligence among the security agencies in the country.

“This phase of the war will be intelligence-driven and the new centre is expected to intensify the harvesting and sharing of intelligence so as to bring to an early closure, the desperate last-minute activities of the terrorists.

Mr Lanre Awoseyin, President, Nigeria Hotel Association, on Saturday criticised the Senate’s passage of the bill for an Act to amend the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) Act No 81 of 1992.

Awoseyin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the contents of the bill were against the spirit of the constitution of the country.

He advised President Muhammadu Buhari not assent to the bill.

According to him, the bill proposes that accreditation, registration and grading of hotels should all be handled by the NTDC.

He said that the bill also stated that one per cent of hoteliers’ charges each year would be remitted to the Federal Government.

Awoseyin described the remittance as “outrageous, obnoxious and abnormal”.

He said that tourism and hotels are on the Residual list to be managed by the state government and not the Federal Government, but NTDC is a parastatal under the Federal Government.

Awoseyin said that the declaration was made by the Supreme Court in 2013 when the Federal Government took Lagos State Government to court for opposing its  accreditation exercise.

“The bill has already been passed by the Senate but we want to draw the Presidency’s attention to it.

“The constitution states that tourism and hotel management are under the Residual list, to be controlled by the state government and not the federal government.

“In spite of the private sector’s objection to the bill, the National Assembly still went ahead to pass it.

“Therefore, we urge the President not to sign it and disregard it.

“We are writing the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture. This will get to them soon,’’ Awoseyin said.

The Senate had, on Oct 19, passed the “Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2017.

The bill was sponsored by Sen. Mathew Urhoghide (Edo South)
