  • ‘Regulating social media will amount to tyranny’

    CEO of Amen Estate Babatunde Gbadamosi has said that the regulation of the media will amount to muzzling freedom of expression.

    He stated this at the Ngozi Agbo lecture organised by the Press Club of the University of Lagos on October 11, 2018.

    Gbadamosi said there is no need to regulate the information exchanged on the online platform since the opinions expressed in meeting places like the vendor stands, eateries and others cannot be regulated.

    “Even if we go ahead to regulate the information exchanged on the online platform , are we still going to regulate the information and opinions exchanged and expressed at the vendor stand, eateries and other places?”

    He also urged the government to leave the regulation of the online platform and meet the infrastructural needs of the technological sector which he said will increase employment.

    “Leave the regulation of the social media and provide strong networks and other necessary infrastructure to meet the unending employment needs, provision of shelter and meet the basic needs of man”

    He added that journalists have failed in delivering top notch investigative reports by not investigating the past of politicians which are most times ugly.

    On the problem with the country, he said “the issue with Nigeria is that Nigerians are too superficial, they like things that are shining.

    Press Club gets new leaders

    The Press Club of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) members have sworn-in new leaders.

    The event, which started at 4pm, held at the Common Room of  Jaja Hall.

    The former president of the club, Oluwatosin Adesile, represented the club’s Staff Adviser, Mrs Rita Joy, at the event.

    The Chairman, Electoral Committee, Adeyemi Olalemi, described the ceremony as a new beginning for the association. He advised the new officers to embrace the principle of openness and truth in discharging their duties.

    He said: “This is not a destination, but a journey. You input today will determine your output tomorrow. You must imbibe the principle of truth and transparency to promote the ideals of the club.”

    The outgoing president, Modiu Olaguro, said his administration recorded unprecedented successes, saying the group was able to reach out to students in all faculties through its press statements.

    Modiu advised his successor to amend the club’s constitution to encourage members in discharging their duties.

    Adesile hailed the outgoing executive for their efforts to deepen the foundation of campus journalism in the school. He advised the new leaders to increase the membership of the club to make improve its activities and create more awareness.

    The oath of office was administered on members of the new executive by the Electoral Committee chair, after which they received certificates of return and copies of the club’s constitution.

    Temitope Ojedele, a 400-Level English student, is the president; Taiwo Ekeleme, general secretary; Ifeoma Nwalisi, public relations officer and Anselem Anonyuo, welfare secretary.

    In his acceptance speech, Temitope sought members’ support to achieve the objectives of the club.

     

  • Oyo NUJ inaugurates Press Club

    The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State chapter, yesterday inaugurated a Press Club in the Pen School owned by the union.

    The co-educational private institution was established on September 25, 2004.

    The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Taiwo Otegbeye, said the club would breed future leaders that will uphold the journalism profession.

    The union’s Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Opadotun, said the press club is meant to integrate children into the media.

    Opadotun said: “The club, among other things, will help pupils sharpen their communication skills.”

    In a lecture titled: “The impact of the press on democracy”, Mr. Akin Aboluwade, a journalist, urged the media to be disciplined.

    He said the media played a vital role in restoring democracy in the country.

    Aboluwade said the greatest strength of the media was its ability to effect changes, both at the social and governmental levels.

    Mr. Bisi Oladele of The Nation was awarded the “Reporter of Reporters”. Aboluwade of the Punch and a veteran journalist, Mr. Tunde Akingbade, among others, were also honoured.

  • Press Club inducts members

    A press club, the Megaphone News Agency, in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has inducted new members. The agency also held a workshop on journalism.

    The programme had in attendance Mr Olusola Ademola, a former journalist with The Nation and Assistant in Osun State Bureau of Communication, Dr O. Adeleke, a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, OAU, and the president of Association of Campus Journalist (ACJ).

    Okoh Kennedi, Editor-in-Chief of the agency, admonished the new members to always be conscious of the three D’s for which the agency is known. According to him, diligence, dedication and determination were the watchword of the club.

    Dr Adeleke, who spoke on Journalism: The do’s and the don’ts, took the students through the legal aspect of journalism and enumerated areas that could result to a problem for a journalist. He advised the campus journalists to avoid reporting falsehood and to always consider the public’s right to know only verifiable facts.

    He also charged the members of the agency to be objective in their news reporting and to avoid plagiarism, fabrication of information and doctoring of pictures and videos so that the credibility of their job won’t be damaged. The don said the fact that they were journalists did not give them immunity against civil and criminal suits.

    News Editor of the agency, Sunday Ekundayo, said the agency was respected on campus because of the priority which it gave to local news over national and international news.
