    Bill seeking establishment of healthcare centres in all LGAs scales second reading

    A bill seeking the establishment of a primary healthcare centre in every local government area of the country has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

    Titled, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the National Primary Health Care Development Agency Act 2004 to Improve the Effectiveness of Primary Health Care Delivery in Nigeria and for Related Matters (HB.1837), it is sponsored by Rep. Moshood Olanrewaju Oshun.

    Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, Oshun said it was disheartening to that some local government areas do not have any primary healthcare centre making it extremely difficult to access lifesaving medical attention, especially in times of a health emergency. 

    He said, “Research has shown that access to primary health services is linked to better health outcomes, which is particularly important for isolated or deprived population groups that may not have the means to access these services otherwise as health is wealth.

    “It is disheartening to note that some Local Government areas do not have this all-important institution, making it extremely difficult to access lifesaving medical attention, especially in times of a health emergency. 

    “The Rt. Hon. Speaker Hon. Members, I humbly solicit your support for this Bill, which when passed, will enhance the most inclusive, equitable and cost-effective way to achieve Universal Health Coverage while improving the life and health of rural dwellers in the country.”
