    N5M up for grabs  at Prime Atlantic Squash Open

    A total money prize of N5million is up for  grabs as top squash players, yesterday,  served off the 3rd   Prime Atlantic Squash Open at Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos.

    According to Tomi Falase, Lagos State Squash Association (LSSA) chairman, the tournament  is also a Professional Squash Association (PSA) ranked and would help the players to pick up ranking points.

    “We are happy that we are holding the edition of this tournament which, aside from developing their form will also improve their rankings.

    Top players like 2023  champion Onaopemipo Adegoke, finalist Gabriel Olufunmilayo, Friday Daniel, and top female player Rofiat Abudulazeez will be competing for  ranking points.

    Gabriel, who just returned from abroad, where he had gone to horn his skill, is elated to be part of the tournament.

    The 2023 finalist said he’s in top form and would give his best to win the title and shore up his PSA ranking.

    “I hope I can repeat my 2023 performance again this year but I know it is not going to be easy because everybody is playing well.

    He further lauded LSSA for putting together PSA ranking tournaments.

    “Winning cash prizes is good but for genuine development of squash, organising PSA-certified tournaments is the ultimate.”

    The second edition of the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament last year saw Adegoke and Abudulazeez winning in the male and female categories.

    In the women’s final, Abudulazeez defeated Blessing Isaac 11-7 11-8 11-7, an aggregate of 3-0.

    In the men’s final, Gabriel gave Adegoke a tough start as he led by 1-0 in the first set, then Adegoke stepped up his game winning the second set in the best of five games.

    Stage set for 2nd Prime Atlantic Squash Open

    Stage is now set for the second edition of Prime Atlantic Squash Open, a Professional Squash Association (PSA) approved tournament, as players will be aiming to shore up their world ranking through the five-day tournament.

    According to the Chairman Lagos State Squash Association (LSSA), Tomi Falase, the tournament would improve players’ world ranking as the second edition which would feature senior and U-19 championships is scheduled to serve-off at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from Oct. 31 to November 4.

    “Organising regular tournament is good for the players but making it a PSA approved championship is the icing on the cake. Prime Atlantic and the LSSA are ready to hold the second edition.

    “What this will do is to improve the rankings of our players internationally; it will put them on the same pedestal to make their mark like the legendary Jahangir Khan and the Jonathan Power of this world.

    “This second edition promises to be an exciting one; the players are in top form because they’ve had regular competitions recently. So, it’s going to be the battle of the fittest,” Falase said.

    The Tournament Director, Wasiu Sanni, said the essence of the tournament was to avail players the opportunity to be competitive.

    “Training without putting what you have learnt into practice is effort in futility, and we as the custodians of these players need to observe them and know where they need improvement.

    “I’m excited about what’s to come, Prime Atlantic has been a great partner in progress and I hope these players make the best of this opportunity,” he said.
