  • Why we’re prioritising road development in Ogun, by Abiodun

Why we’re prioritising road development in Ogun, by Abiodun

    …Governor: I won’t be distracted by rhetorics

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has explained while his administration is prioritising road development across the Gateway State.

He cited the desire to shore up the socio-economic status of the state and the economic importance of infrastructure as major forces driving priorities.

He, however, restated commitment to delivery of dividends of democracy to every part of the state.

According to him, his focused administration would not be distracted by rhetorics of arm-chair critics and fault-finders.

According to him, the state had the longest kilometres of federal, state and local government roads, which were in deplorable conditions when he assumed office.

He said that his administration consulted widely with stakeholders on the roads with the greatest economic importance to the state to guide prioritization.

He also noted that roads that connect the state to adjacent states, be they intrastate, interstate or roads that connect farms to markets, have been enjoying attention.

Abiodun, who stated this in Abeokuta, the state capital, said his focus is to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people and not to respond to baseless criticisms by out-of-favour politicians.

He said, “For the avoidance of doubt, we have reconstructed every major expressway connecting Lagos State to Ogun State as a matter of fact; every major expressway connecting Ogun State to adjacent states, from those that were not existing before to those that were existing. Is it Agbara-Atan-Lusada that was not motorable or the Epe-Ijebu-Ode that was not motorable? Between Epe-Ijebu-Ode takes you 12 minutes now and it is a world class expressway.

“Between Epe and Ijebu-Ode, we now have two adjacent roads, one built by us, another one facilitated with Dangote, using his tax credit,” he added.

Abiodun maintained that his administration is currently reconstructing the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway, regarded as the second busiest road in Nigeria, noting that he met the road in a deplorable state, as it was not attended to by past governors.

“But we saw that road as a road of high economic importance and we fought tooth and nail to take over that road. Today, we are reconstructing the Interchange to Papalanto in reinforced concrete in partnership with another company using their tax credit.

“We constructed Abeokuta to Sagamu that was probably the worst road ever constructed in the history of this state. It was like laying asphalt on laterite, you know how many lives it claimed even in the last administration and so many other roads,” he said.

He, consequently, declared that he would not be distracted by rhetorics sponsored by disgruntled politicians who sees nothing good in his administration.

He said, “We will continue to remain focused despite the sponsored barking of some nay sayers.

“You know I am not one to respond to the frivolous sponsored rhetoric of some frustrated politicians. This is not politics here, this is governance, I am the Governor of Ogun State and I know what I am doing.

“Some of our governors before, they didn’t know what they were doing, but they now see a governor in action and rather than applaud, they were sponsoring cheap political rhetoric, but we know how to deal with those kinds of people.

“The most important thing is that all the sponsored rhetoric about bad roads here and there, you know performance is undeniable. It can’t lie, you know you can sponsor all the Twitter and Facebook in the world, but people can see what we are doing.

“Almost going to 1500 kilometers of roads, it is unprecedented in the history of this state. The roads I am reconstructing did not degenerate to that level after I became Governor, I inherited them but that is not an excuse.”

The governor said apart from roads, his administration built an airport in line with its multi-modal transport master plan which reaffirmed the location as suitable for an airport.

“Every indication suggested that we needed to have an airport in Ogun State and I am glad that has been validated today. We built the best airport in this country today, the best equipped airport in this country today.

“The flights arriving and departing there are full. We are now getting ready to increase passenger traffic, that airport is in our Aerotropolis.

“Ogun State is the fastest developing economy in this country today and one of the safest if not the safest state in this country today. Our internal revenue has quadrupled, our GDP has quadrupled from N3.56 trillion to N17 trillion, so, what are they talking about?” the governor queried.

Abiodun: A bridge builder’s impactful leadership

    By Femi Ogbonnikan

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun graciously clocked 65 on May 29, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his life journey. Being 65 in a country where life expectancy stands at 54.6 as against the global average of 73.3 years is no mean feat. It is not by might but by His Grace. Grace is an unmerited favour of God freely and randomly given to some select individuals. It’s not something that can be earned, but it is a gift from God. Amidst the vagaries and uncertainty of life, God gave Prince Abiodun another opportunity to celebrate one more year on this planet. And he didn’t take it for granted. He marked the anniversary with humility, modesty, and absolute reverence for the Power above: The awesome God.

On the auspicious occasion which coincided with the sixth anniversary of his administration, encomiums poured in torrent. From President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PAT) to his counterparts, friends, political associates, and other well-wishers, commendations came in abundance, pointing to the scope of the goodwill, friendship, and significant achievements he had attained over the years. It underscores people’s appreciation of his delightful disposition as a bridge builder and a great achiever.

President Tinubu set the tone for the Thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, to mark the 65th birthday anniversary and six years in office of the governor. In his congratulatory message, President Tinubu praised Prince Abiodun for his contributions to Ogun State’s infrastructure development, including roads, housing, and public services, which have enhanced the state’s economy and improved the quality of life for its residents.

The President, who was represented by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, said: “Your leadership over the past six years has transformed the entirety of Ogun State into a model of progress marked by notable advancements in infrastructure, social welfare, education, youth empowerment, agriculture, and food security.

“Through transparent and inclusive governance, you have fostered innovation, stability, and sustainable development, reflected in Ogun State’s rising profile as a leading destination for investment and a state with steadily growing Internally Generated Revenue.

“I commend your unwavering commitment to public service and the advancement of our great nation; your leadership remains a pillar of strength in our collective pursuit of national renewal and prosperity.”

Also, Akpabio, in his message, commended Abiodun for his developmental strides, stating that the governor had translated his vision into reality. In a statement loaded with humour, he said: “I was a bit scared when I landed today at the airport because I thought I would remain in history as the best-ever governor Nigeria has produced, but seeing what is happening here, it looks like people are trying to beat my record.

“But I think it is good; the competition is good. I thought I was an uncommon governor, but I have come to see an uncommon state.

“We thank you for the support you have given to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and we thank you for mobilizing all the governors of Southern Nigeria to line up behind the President.”

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, didn’t mince words either in commending Governor Abiodun for his monumental achievements in the last six years and on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

The octogenarian former president specifically commended the governor for hosting a befitting National Sports Festival, describing it as a huge success.

“To our Governor, His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, once again, I offer my deepest personal appreciation. Your leadership commitment and unwavering dedication have delivered not just a festival but also a legacy.

“You have shown the world the strength, capacity, and hospitality of Ogun State. This was a world-class event, and you have raised the standard for all to follow in the future.

“You have not only organized a festival, but you have also provided us with proud and exciting moments in our national life and laid the foundation for the future,” Obasanjo said.

The governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in his goodwill message, described Abiodun as a leader of immense importance.   In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke commended his Ogun State counterpart for his political sagacity in conflict management, thereby entrenching sustainable peace and tranquility in the state, resulting in advancements in critical sectors of the state’s economy.

His words:  “In six years as Governor, Dapo Abiodun has restored hope and created a future of possibilities for the people of Ogun State. From wise investments in bolstering the education sector to revamping public infrastructure for increased accessibility, Governor Abiodun has shown his worst critic the power of good governance.

“As he marks a new age, I celebrate him for the visible impacts he has made over the years, and I also honor the creativity he has brought to governance.

The Deputy Governor, Engr. (Mrs.) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, noted that the governor, as a transformational leader, has lifted the state beyond all expectations, as he has consistently delivered on his promises.

She said: “I have been working hand-in-hand with him for the last six years, and I have seen his dedication, his commitment, and his passion-how he puts his body and soul into everything that he does. We thank God that we are seeing good results from the very hard work.

“His Excellency is dedicated, he is committed, he is passionate about anything he does, and if he sets his mind to something, he gives it 100%. I wish His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, a very happy 65th birthday.”

Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, noted that Governor Abiodun, in the last six years, has put in place measures that have led to the economy growing in leaps and bounds, as well as building confidence, which has brought about unity among people of different tribes, classes, and religions.

Prince Abiodun, the SSG observed, has been consistent in his developmental plans, saying that the provision of infrastructure and a conducive business environment has placed the state as a force to be reckoned with in the comity of states in the country.

“Prince Abiodun values lives and people’s progress. The level of acrimony and rancour has gone down during his tenure. Most of the issues we had to deal with when we came in, like people going on strikes and violence all over the place, have gradually normalized, step by step.

“I am proud to say that in Ogun State, there has not been a workers’ strike in the last 18 months. Now, everybody knows that Governor Abiodun does not play games with people’s lives, their earnings, and progress,” he stated.

While wishing the governor a happy 65th birthday, Mr. Talabi pledged his unalloyed loyalty and support to enable him to end his tenure on a sound note.

The State Head of Service (HoS), Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, said the past six years have been remarkable with purposeful and visionary leadership dedicated to the overall well-being of the people.

According to the Head of Service, the meticulous planning and sense of dedication as encapsulated in the ISEYA mantra have propelled the state to be the industrial capital of the country, just as the administration has fared well in all sectors of the economy.

He lauded the governor for his worker-friendly posture, saying this has led to increased productivity and more dedication to duties on the part of the workforce. Onasanya noted with delight the efforts of the present administration in rejuvenating the civil service through training programs, prompt payment of salaries and allowances, as well as the release of funds for pensioners’ gratuities.

The Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Governor, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, on his part, said the governor has been able to reach across the 20 local government areas in terms of road infrastructure, as the roads are either being reconstructed or the old ones rehabilitated.

“In primary healthcare, the state government has been able to rehabilitate close to 177 facilities and is targeting about 236 across the state. In terms of housing, we’ve been able to do close to 4,000, but our target is to reach 10,000. It is also key for me to mention that in terms of infrastructure, the Gateway International Airport is very key; it is an unprecedented and monumental achievement,” he said.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Adijat Adeleye-Oladapo, noted that the state has experienced a tremendous positive overhaul in the last six years, emerging as the fastest-growing economy in the country, backed by facts.

Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Hon. Olukayode Akinmade, said Ogun has become the most sought-after state in terms of investment, as it has been able to take advantage of its proximity to Lagos State.

“Since Governor Dapo Abiodun came on board, we have not had issues with thuggery or assassination; Ogun State has never had it so good like this. Everywhere is peaceful, and everyone is going about their duties without molestation or harassment, and you can feel peace and freedom in the air,” he said.

Facts don’t lie. Governor Abiodun’s imprints are allover the sectors of the Ogun State economy. Effects of his infrastructure transformation agenda, industrial and investment promotion, healthcare delivery service, accessible education, human capital development, youth and women empowerment, agro -allied processing and value addition are there to see. It is, therefore, not surprising that his birthday anniversary has earned him so much ovation from eminent Nigerians across ethnic, religious and political boundaries. As a bridge builders and a pleasant political figure of no mean guile, he has earned his goodwill through an unblemished track record of service and social interaction. Happy cheers to an amiable Governor at 65. Your selfless service and focused leadership have changed the socioeconomic lives of the people of Ogun State over the period of six years. Your dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed. Bravo!

  • Ogun dry port: Yet another game changer in Nigeria’s industrial capital

Ogun dry port: Yet another game changer in Nigeria’s industrial capital

    By Kayode Akinmade

The Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, is apparently one politician unmoved by the antics of mischief makers. While getting panned by hack and hired writers for “building no roads”, he built over 600km of roads in just four years. The critics travelled on the Sagamu-Abeokuta road and the Mojoda-Epe-Ijebu Ode road, among many others, saw the various housing estates he built—Kobape, Sagamu, Abeokuta, etc—and marveled at the Gateway International Airport, Nigeria’s biggest cargo airport, yet they hid under the Federal Government’s (FG) decades-long neglect of its roads in the Gateway State to disparage the governor’s good works. But when the people’s governor reinvented diplomacy and got Abuja to hand over the most strategic federal roads to his government, bringing succour to a longsuffering populace, they became shell-shocked. Among others, the Sagamu-Ore Benin expressway and the Abeokuta-Ifo-Ota-Lagos expressway are witnessing massive attention, as is the federal road leading to the FG’s Laderin Train Station in Abeokuta. On October 11, Governor Abiodun performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the development of an inland dry port at Papalanto/ Itori In Ewekoro. From roads to airports, and from dry ports to free trade zones, the Ogun State helmsman is turning the Gateway State into a massive construction site.

Normally, a port is by the sea. But it can be congested, making cargo clearance quite inefficient. That is why dry ports or inland container depots are set up. The dry port is a transportation hub that enables the efficient movement of cargo by rail, road, or sea. It is an alternative route for cargo movement which facilitates trade and promotes economic development in inland regions. Dry ports function like normal seaports, with cargo handling and storage facilities, warehousing and logistics services and customs clearance and inspection services at the heart of their operations. Indeed, cargo tend to be cleared faster at dry ports. In Nigeria, you find dry ports in big cities such as Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Jos, Maiduguri and Ibadan. But the best is about to be sited in Papalanto/Itori.

Already, the first African Quality Assurance Centre has been cited in Ogun State.  Given Governor Abiodun’s economic and industrial growth agenda, an agenda that takes due cognizance of the roles shipping services play in global trade and commerce, it is no wonder that the building of the Gateway Inland Dry Port (GIDP) has been flagged off to complement the strategic transport infrastructure across the state. As the GIDP or ‘Dry Port City’ (DPC), modeled after the extremely vast airport city that places the Gateway International Airport amid a city with emerging industrial dynamics, comes on stream, it will be accompanied by residences, logistics infrastructure, complimentary commercial and industrial developments and new multi-modal transportation infrastructure. The GIDP and DPC will have a railway siding area, container freight station and container depot area, warehouses and bonded warehouses, mineral yard, truck parking, specialized industrial zone, supporting facilities and utilities, internal road network and green areas. The objective it to sustain Ogun State’s rapid industrial growth, addressing increased urbanization as well as supporting national efforts to ease the congestion at Apapa/Tin Can ports, alleviating traffic bottle necks and reducing the waiting time for cargo handling and storage experienced by industry.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the development of the inland dry port, Governor Abiodun noted Ogun State’s status as Nigeria’s Industrial Capital with over 6,000 industries. As he noted, having nurtured the goal of providing focused and qualitative governance, providing the required infrastructure and an enabling environment for public private sector partnership that is fundamental to economic growth and individual prosperity of Ogun people, he established the Ministry of Transportation and rolled out a State Transport Masterplan to define priorities. The Masterplan, he said, identified the need to build a seaport and a dry port, together with investment in rail transport, among others. And so the dry port sitting on 600 hectares (Phase 1) came on stream.

He said: “Today history is being made by this ground breaking of the Gateway Dry Port/ inland container Terminal. This facility is a key enabler of industrial activity and manufacturing in Ogun state .It will on completion will increase the ranking of our state on the ease of doing business inde.  Because of the rail line right here, containers destined for Ogun can be destined CIF Kajola and on arrival loaded on the train, and transported to Shederu Kajola. Our manufacturers will be able to bring in their raw materials without having to go through the hassle of going to Lagos Tin can or Apapa Ports to clear and transport whilst dealing with the attendant demurrage cost that add to their overall cost for production. Ditto for their exports as well. Finished goods can be stuffed into containers and exported from here. This initiative will definitely not just reduce the congestion at both Lagos Tin Can and Apapa ports but will make both ports more efficient . Furthermore this will reduce the vehicular trailer traffic on our roads thus reducing the wear and tear and early maintenance on roads leading in and out of Lagos. With the Gateway Inland Dry Port, we are solidifying our position as the foremost logistics and industrial hub in the country, bringing unparalleled advantages to businesses  operating here.”

Also speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, declared that the Gateway Inland Dry Port will be a model for existing and prospective inland dry ports in Nigeria. As Oyetola noted, the government’s intention is to de-congest the premier seaport in Apapa, boost the economy with seamless movement of goods, and generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities for Nigerians through cargo warehousing and logistics. His words: “Today, as we launch this initiative, we acknowledge the vast economic potential of this Inland Dry Port. This project is not merely about building infrastructure but about laying the foundation for a key logistics hub that will facilitate the movement of goods across Nigeria, creating over 5,000 direct jobs, 15,000 indirect jobs and stimulating local businesses.”

Significantly, the GIDP and DPC are strategically positioned at the intersection of the Lagos to Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway and the proposed East-West Railway Corridor connecting Lagos to the east via Kajola. The site is also connected to the national highway network being accessible via the Lagos – Abeokuta Highway and the Sagamu to Benin and Sagamu to Lagos highways via the Papalanto to Sagamu Interchange road.

With the agro cargo airport,  aggressive road construction and dry port, Ogun is bound to reap great multiplier effects as a nerve center of the Nigerian economy. Great times are here in Dapo Abiodun’s Ogun State.

  • Abiodun, others get Certificates of Return

Ogun State Governor-elect, Prince Dapo Abiodun and his deputy Noimot Oyedele-Salako of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday received their Certificates of Return (CoR) from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The CoR was presented by INEC Commissioner in charge of Ogun, Ondo and Lagos Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola at the commission’s state headquarters in Magbon, off IBB Boulevard, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital.

Twenty-six elected members of the state House of Assembly – comprising 15 All Progressives Congress(APC) including the current Deputy Speaker, Kunle Oluomo (APC, Ifo 1), seven from the Allied People’s Movement (APM), three members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a member of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) – also collect their CoRs.

Adedapo Abiodun pledged to be fair-minded in his approach to governance.

He expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, National leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor Olusegun Osoba and the Ogun electorate for their support that ensured his victory at the poll.

He noted that the victory was for the good people of Ogun State, pledging that he would not betray the trust and confidence reposed in him as expressed with their votes.

Abiodun said: “Victory at the poll is neither that of our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC), nor mine alone. It is indeed the victory for all the good people of Ogun State who, despite the challenges that could have dampened their spirit and prevented them from exercising their civic duties, defied the odds and came out in their large numbers and laid the foundation for this ceremony.

“You are the real heroes and heroines of this success and democracy. You are the ultimate winners!

“It is gratifying to note that, almost all my major co-contestants have demonstrated spirit of sportsmanship, congratulated us and even responded to our hands of fellowship.

“I salute your character, which confirms that your motivation is beyond aspiration for office or personal interests. Our hands of fellowship remain wide open to all.”

Ogun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji advised Abiodun to note that election has come and gone with the outcome determined, and so, should run an all-inclusive government that would deliver quality governance to the people.

  • Ogun: Uneasy calm after the storm

The ripples from the contentious 2019 general elections in Ogun state have yet to smoothen out as Governor-elect, Prince Dapo Abiodun set about the task of reconciling factions within his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and creating room to accommodate the hordes of defectors now seeking political refuge in the victorious ruling party, writes Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor.

THE relative peace with which the last general election came and went in Ogun state, contrary to some earlier predictions based on obvious pre-election day developments, is one reason why it may be correct to say the 2019 general election was successful. In the build up to the elections, Ogun state featured prominently on the list of states where the polls were expected to have ended in chaos and confusion.

The unexpected chaos and mudslingings that characterized President Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential campaign in the state on February 11 during which he was heckled and stoned for publicly endorsing Prince Dapo Abiodun as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the state, created worries that the general elections in Ogun, especially the governorship and House of Assembly polls, will be dogged by violence across the state.

To further raised the fears, in the run up to the guber election, clashes between supporters of the leading parties and candidates became the order of the day. Campaign trains were attacked and supporters of the various gladiators engaged in uncountable free-for-all fights in various parts of the state leading to the loss of lives and properties while many people were injured.

So tense was the situation that many observers blamed the low turn out of voters during the presidential and national assembly elections in the state on the fear of violence that preceded the polls. Utterances of the gladiators and their cohorts didn’t help the situation as threats and counter threats laced the statements of many frontline politicians, in the days leading to the governorship election.

Worried, the police and other security agencies warned of its resolve to deal decisively with trouble makers, before, during and after the elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it will not hesitate to cancel the results of appalling units where violence and other electoral malpractices are reported. And as the day drew closer, the settings across the state was battle-ready.

Surprisingly, the March 9 elections, save for isolated cases of fighting, went peacefully across the state. Voting was concluded and there was no need for the police or the electoral body to actually make good their threats. Also, the voters turn-out was better than was it was on February 23. The collation of results across the 20 council areas of the state went hitch free. And at the state level, the final result was peacefully announced to the surprise of many observers worldwide.

INEC declared Abiodun, the candidate of the APC, winner of the March 9 governorship polls in the State. The state Returning Officer for the governorship poll, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, announced in Abeokuta at about 12. 45 a.m. on Monday, March 11, that Abiodun scored a total of 241, 670 votes to clinch victory. Olayinka explained that Abiodun beat his closest rival, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) who came second with 222, 153 votes.

He said that the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gboyega Isiaka, came third with 110, 422 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party Candidate, Sen. Buruji Kashamu, who scored 70,290 votes, was fourth. A breakdown of the results on local government basis as announced by local government collation officers showed that Abiodun won in 11 council areas and scored over 25 per cent of total votes cast in 16 out of 20 local governments in the state.

The councils won by Abiodun are Ijebu-Ode , Odogbolu, Odeda, Ijebu North-East, Sagamu, Abeokuta  South, Ijebu-East. Others are Remo- North, Ogun Waterside, Obafemi-Owode and Ikenne, Akinlade of the APM won in six council areas which are Abeokuta  North, Egbado- South, Ewekoro, Ipokia, Ifo and Ado Odo- Ota. Isiaka of the ADC won in Imeko- Afon and Egbado-North local governments while Kashamu of the PDP won in the Ijebu-North local government area.

    Uneasy calm

With the results announced and winner declared, calm returned to Ogun state as the gladiators sheath their swords. The verbal warfare also ceased. The social media platforms, where supporters of the various contenders have been hurling abuses and threats at each other endlessly also went to sleep. Safe for congratulatory messages and a few explanations on how the elections were won and lost, not much is been said again.

Rather, it appeared as if the moment for stock taking and fence meddling is here after all the storm. Away from the worries that heralded the polls, stakeholders in Ogun state are today battling new fears. While some chieftains and members of the ruling APC are said to be currently concerned about how political positions would be shared in the new government, others are said to be strategising over control of the party machineries across the state.

In one of such moves, Lotto magnate, Sir Kessington Adebutu, has reconciled Abiodun, and, his son, Hon. Adebutu. According to reports, the meeting, which held at the instance of Sir Adebutu at his residence in Lagos was called to ensure the two illustrious son of the soil embrace peace. Sir Adebutu reportedly called for peaceful and cordial relationship between the two Remo-born politicians, as much work needed to be done to uplift the people of the state.

A source told The Nation that many chieftains of the APC, especially those who worked closely with Abiodun during the electioneering process, are expressing concern over the rate at which prominent individuals and groups are now flocking into the APC across the state. Another source claimed chieftains and members of the defeated APM are also making moves to return to the APC on the orders of Governor Amosun.

“The influx of new members into the party at all levels, following the many alliance and collaborations entered into leading to the election, is the new source of worry for both chieftains and members of the ruling party. Not a few are wondering how government and party positions will be shared. Don’t forget that the terms of these deals were not made public. We are now hearing various sharing formulas and many people and groups within the party are threatened by this.

“Even some close aides and associates of the governor-elect are expressing concern about the happenings around him. We are now seeing people and groups who openly worked against him coming around to felicitate with him and speak of how hard they worked for his victory. Even those who opposed him openly till the elections were over are now being reconciled with him by prominent persons he cannot but listen to,’ another source added.

On their part, chieftains and members of the APM, alongside some allies and associates of outgoing governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, are faced with an uncertain political future. According to reliable insiders, the political camp of Governor Amosun is in deep confusion over what to do next. The Nation gathered that contrary to the usual, not a single meeting have been held by the group since the result of the March 9 elections were announced.

A source, who also contested for a seat in the state assembly on the platform of the APC said, aside the governor and a few persons, most of the top notches in the governor’s camp are currently out of the country. “Nothing much has been said or done. It is not true that a directive has been given as regards what we are to do next politically.

“A s we speak, I can tell you that majority of our leaders are abroad holidaying. The governor has not said anything concerning the future of APM but don’t forget that we have resolved to challenge the outcome of the election at the tribunal. It is therefore not proper for us to abandon the party when we still nurse the hope of getting victory at the tribunal,” he said.

    The dramas before

The peaceful elections and the eventual results saw Governor Ibikunle Amosun being the major loser, following his inability to install Akinlade of the APM, the man he had vowed ‘must’ take over from him, as his successor. Although he is a Senator -elect on the platform of the ruling APC, Akinlade’s failure to win the governorship means Amosun has lost control of not only the politics of the state, but also the structures of the ruling APC.

Shortly before the governorship election, the national leadership of the APC announced the suspension of the governor from the party, while recommending him for expulsion. His fate, according to party sources, will be determined at the next NEC meeting of the ruling party. “The recommendation was sent to APC’s national executive committee, the party’s highest decision making organ, for ratification,” the party’s spokesperson, Lanre Isa-Onilu, confirmed.

Before the guber election, Amosun had described his suspension  said that his suspension from the APC is a distraction. Speaking with reporters in Abuja while paying a courtesy visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, the Governor said, “for now, I will not talk on the suspension issue because I have learnt in life that when you are pursuing a goal, your eyes should be on the ball and not on the spectators. If you take your eyes off the ball, you will miss the goal.”

Amosun’s suspension was not the only unexpected drama that happened in the build up to the governorship and House of Assembly polls. During the ‘week of long knives’, queer alliances were also formed by people and groups least expected to think of, not to talk about, working together. Many pundits today will argue that the governorship seat was won and lost on the accounts of the alliances formed during this period.

First to move was a faction of the PDP loyal to a member of the House of Representatives, Oladipo  Adebutu, himself a factional gubernatorial candidate of the party. Adebutu unexpectedly led his campaign organization and supporters to adopt the governorship candidate of the APM, Akinlade, moments after an appellate Court confirmed Kashamu is the authentic candidate of the PDP. Earlier, Adebutu had accused the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo,  of sponsoring Senator Kashamu.

Adebutu’s faction, after a closed-door meeting with the APM leaders 48 hours to the election, announced the adoption of  Akinlade as its candidate. The factional Chairman of the PDP, Sikirulahi Ogundele, announced Akinlade’s adoption. The meeting, which was attended by the Director-General of the APM, Sarafa Ishola;  Akinlade, Ogundele and Adebutu, was held in a hotel in Abeokuta.

“Politics is all about responsiveness. Politics is about being upright. So, we found all these qualities in Akinlade, and as I speak  with you,  all the state executive  members, local government executive members and ward executive  members have graciously adopted the candidature of Abdulkabir Akinlade.” Ogundele had claimed while defending his faction’s decision to work for Akinlade of the APM.

Same day, in a move many analysts are still trying to understand, Director General of the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign organisation and former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, urged members of the PDP in Ogun state to vote for Dapo Abiodun of the APC during the governorship election. Daniel,  before then, was supporting Adebutu, who enjoyed the support of the national leadership of the party.

“You would have noticed my studied silence in our local politics in recent times. I have busied myself with national politics having served the state for 8 years. I have also been very busy supporting the ambition of the son of our great philanthropist in Remoland to become the next governor of our dear state. You however would have become aware of the court decision yesterday which did not favour him.

“Going forward, I have directed all our structures statewide to cast all their votes on Saturday for Prince Dapo Abiodun, another bona fide Remo son despite current party differences. I therefore enjoin all to please go and cast your vote on Saturday for Dapo Abiodun in the overall interest of our people. With best regards,” Daniel said while making the historic announcement.

Eventually, the election came and the APC swept the votes, with the support of its old and new allies. The APM and Amosun were disappointed as Akinlade came second behind Abiodun, the man Amosun had vowed will never come near the government house. Analysts say the voting pattern recorded during the governorship election showed that the people of the state totally disagreed with Amosun’s choice of successor.

“It is not Amosun the people rejected; it is the man he wanted to succeed him. The governor, from the look of things, is still loved by his people but he made a big mistake in choosing Adekunle Akinlade, a man who commands neither respect nor acceptance anywhere in the state, as his preferred successor. Amosun won an election into the senate. But Akinlade could not even win his senatorial district,” a source claimed.
