PDP suspends Ubah, refers Kashamu to disciplinary panel

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah for one month. The party has also refereed Senator Buruji Kashamu to its disciplinary committee for action.
Briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said Ubah, who was a governorship aspirant in Anambra State, got suspended for disregarding a query issued him by the leadership of the party.
On Kashamu, Adeyeye said the leadership of the party had queried the senator representing Ogun East over some of his actions which the PDP considered inappropriate and detrimental to the stability of the party.
Adeyeye said: “This week, we had some disciplinary issues regarding the issue of Anambra governorship primaries, in which one of the aspirants had launched a major attack against the leadership of the party in the media.
“I am talking in the person of Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah who not being satisfied with the decision of the Governorship Appeal Panel, decided to launch a vitriolic attack on the leadership of the party and those who were involved in the conduct of the primary.
“The National Caretaker Committee took a decision to issue him a query, asking him to retract the statement and to offer apology to those who have been disparaged by his remarks in the press.
“He chose not to answer the query. Of course the query was issued under the relevant sections of the Constitution of the PDP. But he decided not to answer the query; consequent upon which the National Caretaker Committee today decided to suspend him for a period of one month and to refer the matter to the National Disciplinary Committee for further necessary action”.
Adeyeye said of Kashamu, “He too was issued a query by the National Caretaker Committee some weeks ago. In his own case, he replied the query and denied some of the allegations made against him. He was basically saying that he is not responsible for some of those things for which he was accused of.
“Consequently, the National Caretaker Committee also took a decision to refer his case to the National Disciplinary Committee for further necessary action”
According to the party spokesman, the disciplinary committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
Ubah was suspended for launching media attacks on members of the primary election committee set up the party to conduct the Anambra State governorship primaries. Mr. Oseloka Obaze won the primary election.
The oil magnate had described the primary election as a “sham” and accused the leadership of the party of doctoring the delegates’ list for the primaries.
According to him, the list of accredited delegates used for the primary election was different from the one the party submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ubah had accused the chairman of the primary election committee, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State of manipulating the exercise by unilaterally pruning the number of delegates.
He had challenged Obaze’s victory on the ground that the latter was still awaiting the party’s decision on his waiver application at the time the primary election was conducted.
Ubah had threatened to take the PDP to court, following the failure of the party leadership and its various conflict resolution organs to address his complaints.
“I was robbed of the PDP governorship ticket at the primary election and all my efforts to get redress from the leadership of the party, including the Appeal Panel and the Board of Trustees (BoT) failed to yield result”, Ubah had said.
Apparently, Kashamu is being investigated for challenging the decision on the party leadership dissolving Ogun State executive committee in court.
The party had, a few weeks ago, dissolved the state’s executive committee loyal to Kashamu and had set up a caretaker committee in its place.
Kashamu had kicked against the decision of the party, an action that attracted a query from the party leadership.
In response, the senator said the query was contemptuous of a subsisting court judgment relating to the leadership crisis in the Ogun State chapter.
Kashamu’s response states in part, “I am extremely shocked by the content of your letter to the effect that I instigated the police to arrest and prefer criminal charges against certain party members whose names were mentioned in your letter.
“This is more so because the issues raised in the letter practically have no direct bearing to me except to the extent that I am the leader and highest PDP political office holder in Ogun State.
“First and foremost, I differ to the assertion that the Nigeria Police could be instigated into performing their statutory responsibilities. As a Nigerian lawmaker and Senator of the Federal Republic, I strongly believe in our institutions and thus have no doubts about the professionalism and capability of the Nigeria Police to perform their functions should the need arise”.

Adeyeye resigns as Ekiti varsity pro- chancellor

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has resigned his appointment as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.

Adeyeye’ resignation followed his rejection of the adoption by the state deputy Governor, Prof. Olusola Eleka as the party’s candidate for the 2018 governorship election in Ekiti.

The PDP spokesman’s resignation was conveyed through a statement by his campaign organisation, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM).

The Ekiti governorship aspirant said he had communicated his resignation to the state government.

Adoption of Fayose’s deputy a charade – Adeyeye

The Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, on Wednesday described the choice of Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as the party’s candidate for the 2018 governorship election as a “charade and attempt to impose a stooge.”

Adeyeye said adoption of Olusola by a section of the party as “the sole candidate” for next year’s poll was “a clear breach of the PDP constitution and the Electoral Act.”

He said it was wrong for Governor Ayo Fayose’s appointees and few House of Assembly members to deny delegates opportunity to elect a candidate.

The former Minister of State for Works said the adoption of the deputy governor contravened Section 50 (1), Section 50 (2) and Section 50 (2b) of the PDP constitution as amended in 2012.

In a statement signed on his behalf by the Director of Media, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM), Mr. Niyi Ojo, the governorship aspirant implored party members and the general public to ignore what he called “the purported adoption of Olusola as a sole candidate.”

It reads: “The attention of PAAM has been drawn to the charade that took place at the Government House this afternoon by some political appointees, councillors and few House of Assembly members allegedly adopting Prof. Olusola as their consensus/sole candidate for 2018 gubernatorial election. This is a clear breach of the party constitution and the Electoral Act.

“The body is unknown to the PDP constitution; it is important to note that PDP is bigger and larger than an individual so the rules and regulations of the party are sacrosanct in the election of any candidate for elective position.

“PAAM believes in credible, transparent, free and fair primary for all aspirants for the position of governorship come 2018. PAAM rejects the purported adoption of a sole candidate in its entirety as there are many other aspirants for the governorship race in 2018.

“This gathering was organised and supervised by Governor Fayose to impose a stooge as the sole candidate for PDP in Ekiti State. We implore members of the public and our teeming supporters to disregard the purported adoption of Prof. Olusola as a sole candidate.”

  • Buhari’s speech an anticlimax, says PDP

Buhari’s speech an anticlimax, says PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Monday broadcast to the nation as a monumental anticlimax, saying the President missed an opportunity to calm restiveness and frayed nerves among the citizenry.

In a statement last night, signed by the party’s Head of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom on behalf of the National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the speech failed to inspire confidence in the people.

According to the PDP, the President’s speech failed to inspire confidence, despite the fact that Nigerians were expectantly looking forward to a robust speech that could imbue confidence in the capacity of the government to take on the challenges of governance.

“However, rather than rekindle that hope and confidence, that speech delivered earlier this morning can most charitably be described as a monumental anticlimax.

“The President and his handlers missed a golden opportunity to reconnect with the people through addressing issues that have direct bearing to their well-being and those of their children and dependents.

“Indeed, the President’s speech did not contain anything new; just a rehash of statements that already had been made by both government and various leaders of thought across the country.

“The PDP had cause to commend the then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo for going round the country to engage with relevant stakeholders, which certainly was a better approach.

“The PDP believes that rather than rehashing the worn out clichés about Nigeria’s unity not being negotiable, Nigerians would have loved to hear their President come out definitively to tell them what realistic measures his government intended to take to uproot the causes of perennial agitations and counter agitations that are now becoming a recurring decimal in our national discourse.

“The party believes that instead of always mouthing the indivisibility of this country, the government should be seen walking the talk by instilling confidence in all the people across board that it belongs to all.

“The casual mention of ‘elements of Boko Haram’, kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes’ etc, were also somewhat on the perfunctory side and do not imbue confidence”, the statement added.

The PDP observed that the President returned to the country in a week that saw the closure of all public universities as a result of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“Yet, not even a whimper from our President. Has the future of the future leaders of our country sunk so low in the estimation of our current leaders that the issue was considered not important enough to command a mention in the President’s address?

“To this end, the PDP once again welcomes the President back home and continues to pray for his total recovery as well as God’s guidance.

“But we believe Nigerians deserve a richer statement from a President that was away from them for more than a hundred days during which a lot happened that should have elicited more than a mention in that speech”.

…Sacks Sheriff’s structures in Jigawa, Benue, others

The national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has announced August 12, 2017 date for a non-elective national convention slated to hold in Abuja.

The tenure of the Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee is to expire on August 16, 2017. The non-elective convention is expected to extend Makarfi’s tenure to allow the Caretaker Committee conduct an elective convention before the end of the year.

The decision was arrived at on Tuesday, following series of consultative meetings involving the party’s National Caucus, the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee and members of the Caretaker Committee.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, spokesman of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, explained that time constraint forced the party to opt for non-elective convention.

According to him, given the August 16 expiration of the tenure of the Caretaker Committee, it would be practically impossible to meet timelines prescribed by the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution for the conduct of elective convention.

Going by relevant provisions of the Electoral Act, the party is required within 21 days, to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in writing informing the commission of a pending elective convention.

As of Tuesday, the Makarfi-led leadership, which was only affirmed by the Supreme Court on July 12, has lost the 21-day window.

Also, one of the resolutions taken was the decision to disband the caretaker committees set up in Jigawa and Benue States by the sacked National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff shortly after he was declared chairman by the Court of Appeal in February 2017.

The two state chapters have been directed to revert to their existing executive committees prior to their dissolution by Sheriff.

Many other states where parallel executives were set up by Sheriff are also to revert to their original status.

The party also announced plans to set up standing Disciplinary Committee and Reconciliation Committee to handle issues of discipline and reconciliation among members.

Adeyeye said the two committees would have no time frame and will permanently remain recognised bodies of the party.

The spokesman gave hints of amendment to a number of provisions of the party’s constitution, saying that draft of the proposed amendment had already been circulated to the relevant organs of the party for their scrutiny and input ahead of the August 12 convention.

According to him, the proposed amendment will be geared toward entrenching internal democracy and to check the culture of impunity within the party.

Adeyeye said the party will participate actively in the governorship election in Anambra State billed to hold in November, stressing that consultations were already ongoing.

He however said the meeting did not discuss the Lagos State local government election coming up on Saturday, saying that the matter has been left to the Lagos state chapter of the party to handle.

The meetings, which were held at the party’s secretariat attracted unprecedented number of party faithful across the six geopolitical zones in recent times.

The hitherto deserted building had sprung to life minutes after the Supreme Court pronounced Makarfi the authentic leader of the PDP on July 12.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and all the governors elected on the platform of the party attended the meetings, same with members in the National Assembly.

Also in attendance were former governors, ex ministers, past party chairmen and other former executive members.

Sheriff and his loyalists however stayed away from the meetings.

  • Buhari’s economic recovery plan dead on arrival – PDP

Buhari’s economic recovery plan dead on arrival – PDP

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the economic recovery plan unveiled on Wednesday by President Muhammadu Buhari as “dead on arrival.”

A statement issued on Friday by the spokesman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said waiting two years into his administration before unveiling an economic plan showed that the administration was unprepared for governance.

The PDP said the government lacked viable economic blueprint, stressing that this failure accounted for the current economic recession in the land.

The statement said, “It is on record that we alerted the nation after the 2015 general elections on the empty promises of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and cautioned the party to concentrate on governance.

“The blackmail and blame-game by the APC was, and still is a cover up for its obvious lack of plan. Instead, the APC ran our economy into recession after wasting two years witch-hunting PDP members and perceived enemies of government without paying attention to building on the robust achievements of the PDP.

“Nigerians can testify to the hardship, pains, starvation, hunger and agony inflicted on the people by the ineptitude of the APC administration.

“The recovery and growth plan is a proposal which requires implementation but we are worried because of the comments of President Muhammadu Buhari during the launch when he said, ‘I want to assure all Nigerians that we are approaching the solution to our economic challenges with the same will and commitment we have demonstrated in the fight against corruption, terrorism and militancy.

“It is therefore instructive to note that if the Economic Recovery Plan will follow the way of the anti-corruption war so far, then, the plan document is dead on arrival.

“In view of the above, we want to remind Nigerians that the anti-corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC led government  has failed based on the following:

    • The APC led Administration has secured only one conviction since it started the anti-corruption fight in the last two years;
    • The EFCC is yet to open its case against Col. Sambo Dasuki after his arrest and detention about two years ago;
    • No single case is before any court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria against Alison Dieziani Maduekwe after all the allegations leveled against her by this administration;
    • The Federal High Court in the last 72 hours has unfrozen the account of the former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and dismissed the “no case submission” made by Chief Godsdey Orubebe, Barr. Ozhekome and Justice Ademola and others which showed the cases were more for propaganda effect than substance.
    • Similarly, unwarranted freezing of accounts of other persons by the EFCC have also been reversed by competent courts;
    • Several courts of competent jurisdiction have granted bails to a number of individuals being held by security agencies on corruption issues but the APC led government is yet to obey such court orders.

The statement continued, “While other Nigerians are suffering undue persecution by the APC led administration, the following are yet to answer for various allegations leveled against them: The Chief of Staff to the President (CoS), Abba Kyari; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal; the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu; the Federal Government Committee on Northeast contract to ghost companies; alleged allegation against bribery by the Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi and the Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ogbonnaya Onuh; and many others.

“We are equally worried on how the APC Government intends to really actualize this lofty Plan (if it’s not the usual lies to the people) given the low state of Nigerian economy where government is borrowing domestically and internationally to fund its operations. The 2017 Budget is still a mirage.

“To buttress, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has declared that Nigeria is spending 66 per cent of its interest revenue on debt. In other words, the Federal Government has only 34 per cent of its revenue to tackle capital and recurrent expenditures and development.”

  • PDP to Buhari: Resign now

The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign and allow competent hands to steer the country away from the present economic recession.

In a statement Wednesday by the spokesman of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party said the crass ineptitude and lukewarm-attitude of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration could no longer be tolerated.

“Therefore, we are calling on President Buhari and his team to return Nigeria to its state of booming economy before they assumed office in May, 2015, and then quit immediately to allow other capable leaders recover our ailing economy”, the statement added.

The party further expressed worry over the state of affairs in the country, particularly  a recent statement attributed to the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, to the effect that “recession is just a word”, a statement the minister had since denied.

“Is this statement as a result of ignorance, lack of patriotism or in-line with President Buhari’s comment that his ministers are noise makers?”, the party queried.

The statement continued, “For the record, recession is characterized as a period of negative economic growth for two consecutive quarters, given rise to high rate of unemployment, fall in output, increase in government borrowing, etc. Following this understanding, Nigeria’s economy is already near depression.

“For instance, recall that about three airlines, local and international like some banks, have suspended operations and sent their staff on indefinite leave due to poor state of the Nigeria’s economy.

“Nigerians are aware that the PDP government invested heavily in most of our airports in the country that resulted in obvious facelift and improved operations through remodeling, construction of new airports, refurbishing and equipping of the local and international airports to meet best practices in the aviation industry.

“But the APC administration has frittered away all the good policies and programmes which the PDP put in place, thereby crumbling the aviation sector in the country amongst other catastrophes it has caused.

“What Nigerians want from this administration are results, simple! And not resorting to throwing tantrums on the PDP at every given opportunity. Our call for the President to return the counrty to how he met it in 2015 is justified on the following grounds: a bag of rice was N7,000 and now is above N20,000; a mudu of beans was N150 and now is N500; one US Dollar was trading for N197 but now over N400; a liter of fuel was N87 but now N145; cost of transportation and other services have skyrocketed.

“Given our observation since the inception of this government, they have nothing to offer and as such, quitting will be a solution because nobody can give what he/she does not have. APC has failed”.

The PDP called on Nigerians to recall President Buhari’s purported body language at the beginning of his administration, saying governance is a serious business and not about someone’s body language and “de-marketing strategies” of Mr. President while globetrotting.

“When this government came to power in May 2015 riding on the achievements of previous PDP administration, President Buhari’s handlers and his party, the APC claimed it was his body language that brought some positive changes the country was witnessing at that time; so we want to know what are the results of the so called ‘body language’?”.

The opposition party concluded that the earlier the President and his team quit, the better for the country, adding, “there is no better time than now to make this call for the President to return the country to how he met it and quit, or right away quit for a more experienced team to take over”.

It called on its members, teeming supporters and other well-meaning Nigerians to keep praying for God’s intervention for the recovery of the country’s ailing economy.

  • Abia: A/Court judgment excites PDP

    Abia: A/Court judgment excites PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is excited by the Appeal Court ruling that affirmed the election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s of Abia state who contested the election on the platform of the PDP.

The appellate court on Friday had set aside a judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Okon Abang ordering Ikpeazu’s removal and his replacement with Dr. Uche Ogah, also of the PDP.

In a statement on Friday by the spokesman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the PDP described the ruling of the appellate court as triumph of the rule of law and victory for democracy.

The statement said, “What transpired at the Court of Appeal on Thursday, August 18, 2016  has once again rekindled our trust in the Judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

“You will recall that the lead Judge of the five-man panel of Judges of the Appeal Court, Justice Morenike Ogunwumiju on Thursday, August 18, 2016 delivered ruling on an appeal brought before it by Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Executive Governor of Abia state in respect of his Tax Clearance Certificate.

“Finally, the Peoples Democratic Party call on all well meaning Nigerians and the National Judicial Council (NJC) in particular, to continue rising up to its responsibility of maintaining an unbiased judiciary that will be neutral on all issues brought before it”.

  • National Convention’ll hold, says PDP

    National Convention’ll hold, says PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted on going ahead with its national convention scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, despite court orders.

A statement Monday by the spokesperson of the party’s caretaker committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye said the PDP already had the nod of a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt for the convention.

The statement said, “Our attention has been drawn once again to another act of judicial recklessness by the Honourable Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Okon Abang of the purported suspension of the PDP National Convention holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers on Wednesday the 17 of August 2016.

“We wish to however state that a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt Rivers State has earlier in the day given a comprehensive Order wherein the Honourable Judge specifically ordered the PDP to proceed with the convention as scheduled without hindrance.

“Indeed his lordship while giving the Order mandated all relevant agencies including the Police, DSS and INEC to cooperate with the party in organizing a hitch free National Convention.

“You may also wish to note that the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State gave an Interlocutory Order while Justice Okon Abang, Abuja, gave an Interim Order.

“The Order of Port Harcourt is clearly superior and earlier in time to the Interim Order given by Justice Okon Abang. In the light of the above, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as a law abiding party is obeying the Order of the Port Harcourt, Federal High Court until set aside by any competent Court of jurisdiction.

“In view of the above, the 2016 Repeat National Convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will continue as scheduled as we welcome all delegates, party leaders, other critical stakeholders, INEC monitoring team and other friends of PDP to Port Harcourt, Rivers State while wishing all our members and supporters a successful National Convention”

No fewer than 90 aspirants will on Wednesday be jostling for the 19 vacant positions in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Five aspirants are contesting for the chairmanship position. They are Chief Olabode George, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja and Mr. Jimi Agbaje.

  • Freezing of Fayose’s account: PDP accuses Buhari of tyranny, witch-hunt

Freezing of Fayose’s account: PDP accuses Buhari of tyranny, witch-hunt

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the freezing of the personal bank account of Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose as tyrannical and a witch-hunt.

The party said it has been observing with dismay, the  dangerous trend of politically motivated trials and tyrannical administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressive Congress (APC) demanding that the ruling party must stop the witch-hunt in the interest of peace and stability of the nation.

In a statement Wednesday by PDP’ interim spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party said the freezing of the governor’s account was unlawful, undemocratic, autocratic, oppressive, draconian “and to say the least, the height of desperation by the Buhari administration to cover up for its failure to deliver on his campaign promises to Nigerians”.

Adeyeye said events in the country in recent times have shown that President Buhari and the APC have no agenda for nation building but on a revenge mission.

He said, “This government is all out to silence any voice of the opposition. Nigerians will recall that Chief Olisa Metuh, the former National Publicity Secretary of our great party is today standing trial for receiving campaign funds and since his arrest and prosecution by the anti-graft agency, Chief Metuh could not challenge the APC government on policy issues until he left office.

“Nigerians will also recall that one of the known opposition voices, apart from some individuals and governors of our party that have exposed the APC led administration for running the country aground in the last one year is the former spokesman of the PDP presidential campaign organisation, Chief Femi Fani Kayode.

“He is now standing trial for receiving campaign funds from the Director of Finance of the campaign. It’s now the turn of the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose who has been consistent in condemning the woes the APC government brought upon Nigerians and for remaining critical of the APC and President Buhari’s administration”.

The party asked the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to free Fayose’s bank account immediately, saying that the action violated Section 308 of 1999 Constitution as a sitting governor cannot stand trial until after his tenure.

“President Buhari and his party, the APC have introduced a dangerous trend in our polity and if this is not checked or curtailed immediately, Nigeria may be heading to an imperial-rule where the leader of the nation is a supreme ruler dictating who survives at the expense of the Nigerian Constitution”, the spokesman added.

The PDP called on well-meaning Nigerians and all stakeholders in the Nigerian project who are still alive to rise up to the occasion and call the APC government to order before President Buhari “destroys our hard earned democracy”.
