    Prince Erediauwa crowned 39th Oba of Benin

    Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa has been crowned the 39th Oba of Benin Kingdom.

    Prince Erediauwa was crowned at about 2am on Thursday by the Usama N’ Ihiron also known as the Edion led by Chief Oliha.

    Other members of the Edion are Edohen, Ezomo, Ero, Eholo N’ Ire, Oloton and Edaiken.

    The crowning was done at a private ceremony inside the Usama Palace, a temporary building erected for the coronation ceremony.

    However, the name of the new Oba is still being kept from the public until the Oba is presented to the public at Urhokpota hall.

    Sources said that after the coronation ceremony was performed in the inner chambers, the new Oba was presented to the people outside.

    Unlike before when the Crown Prince move about without covering his mouth, the source said he wore the crown and used a white handkerchief to cover his mouth.

    It was gathered that there was huge jubilation around the Usama palace and great fireworks.

    Meanwhile, a large crowd has gathered at the Usama Palace to accompany the new Oba to Urhokpota.

    Among those present is Chief Omohor of Benin Kingdom, bearer of the ancient sword carried by the Oba, the Ikpakohen group ( royal drummers) from Ikpema responsible for beating the royal drum, Ekassa dance group, Isienmwenro guild amongst others.

    A bridge has been constructed at the now dried up Omi River and Chief Omoruyi Isekhere is waiting to take the Oba across the bridge.

    On his way to Urhokpota, the Oba will pass through Isekhere, performed some ceremony at Iwehen street under the watch of Ewaise N’ Iwehen  and proceeded to cross the bridge.

    Oba coronation: Crown Prince prepares to leave Eko-Ohae

    After spending three days at the Eko-Ohae (bachelors camp) as part of the coronation process, Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, is preparing to leave for Uzama Palace.

    A large crowd has gathered at the Eko-Ohae to escort him to Uzama.

    Some persons who were not allowed entry to Eko-Ohae are waiting patiently across the road

    Different palace societies including Ewaise (diviners) Isienmwenro, Iwebo, and others have taken positions.

    Chief Osa and Chief Osuan, descendants of twin brothers that accompanied Prince Oromiyan from Uhe (Ife) are to hold the Crown Prince on both sides during the walk to Uzama.

    As at press time, the Crown Prince was yet to step out.

    Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom and Edaiken N’ Uselu, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa will Saturday begin the coronation ceremony of becoming the 39th Oba of Benin of Kingdom.

     

    Prince Erediauwa who will be the 70th king of Benin when counted from the era of the Ógisos will trek from his Uselu Palace to Benin

     

    The city centre and environs is wearing a new look while all traders and drivers carrying out commercial activities around the Urhokpota Hall have been chased away.

     

    Urhokpota is the place called Eko-Ohae (bachelors’ camp) where Prince Erediauwa is expected to stay for three days immediately he leaves his Palace at Uselu.

     

    A huge tent that will serve as a temporary abode for the Crown Prince has been erected at the Urhokpota hall premises.

     

    Speaking on the coronation ceremonies, Chairman of the Coronation Planning Committee and Enogie of Evbuobanosa/Abdul, Prof. Gregory Akenzua, said all burial ceremonies have been prohibited throughout the period of the coronation process.

     

    Prof. Akenzua said the Edaiken, in a foot procession would be escorted by the peoples of Uselu to Oredo.

     

    He stated that on his way, the Edaiken would stop at the sacred Palm tree called Udin Amamieson-aimiuwa. The palm tree is over 500 years old and it was first climbed by Oba Ewuare during his sojourn in the forest.

     

    From the sacred palm tree, Prince Erediauwa goes to Iya-akpan where Chiefs from Oredo take over and escort him to Eko-Ohae.

     

    Prof. Akenzua further explained that the Edaiken will on October 10 leave Ekpo-Ohae for Usama Palace, the location of the Oba’s Palace before it was moved by Oba Ewedo in the 11th century.

     

    It is at Usama Palace that the coronation will take place by the Usama N’ Ihiron.

     

    Akenzua said the Edaiken will go to Use village for the ceremony of choosing a name and on Thursday October 20, the Edaiken leaves Usama for Urhokpota for presentation of staff of office.

     

    He said the use of Coral Beads would be restored by those entitled to use them.

    Edo polls: INEC relocates Oredo collation centre

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has relocated the Oredo local government collation centre from the Urhokpota Hall to Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre.

    This is because Urhokpota Hall and its environs is being prepared for the coronation of the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa.

    It is the place called Eko-Ohae (bachelors camp) where Prince Erediauwa is expected to stay immediately he leaves his Palace at Uselu as part of his journey to the Benin ancient throne.

    A huge tent has been erected at the premises of Urhokpota Hall which is adjacent the Oba Market.

    Electoral Officer for Oredo, Mr. Utong Awajionyi Christian, who confirmed the relocation, said the Imaguero College Hall that was earlier selected was rejected by politicians for security reasons.

    Mr. Utong said materials have been deployed to all the rack camps in the 12 Wards in Oredo.

    He explained that the purpose was to ensure election begins early.

    Oba Erediauwa: Crown Prince performs Izakhue rites

    As the 15 days funeral rites of Oba Erediauwa, the Oba of Benin continues, Crown Prince of Benin kingdom and Edaiken N’ Uselu, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa on Sunday led his siblings to performed the Izakhue rites according to Benin customs.

    The ceremony involved entertainment of guests and performing some sacrifices at the shrine of Ugha Ozolua.

    Animals slaughtered at the shrine included a cow, chicken and a goat.

    There were several musical performances and cultural display at the Oba Palace.

    Members of the Isiemwenro guild (the big ants the sting the Oba’s enemies) wore black and danced with their traditional weapons.

    The Crown Prince first performed some dance steps to a funeral song by the Isiemwenro guild when he arrived the palace. He wore a hat decorated with beads on a with shirt and wrapper.

    He was led to the altar of Oba Ozolua by members of the Royal Iwebo House.

    After prayers were offered and the animals slaughtered, the event was climaxed with a dance procession to the Emotan Shrine and other shrines.

    There was heavy traffic congestion as the dance procession move through designated route.

    Vehicles were asked to switched off their head lights while traders were also asked to put off their lamps.

    Oba Erediauwa: Crown Prince performs purification rites

    Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom and Ediaken N’ Uselu, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, has begun the rites of his passage of his father, Omon N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa, the Oba of Benin.

    Prince Erediauwa perform some sacrifice at the Ihama N’ Ogbe shrine and the Iviorhue rites representing purity and peace.

    The ceremony was performed by a group of Ihogbe Chiefs headed by Chief Leteman who was delegated by the Ihama N’ Ihogbe.

    It was meant to purify the Crown Prince to prepare him for the task ahead.

    From there, the Crown Prince moved to the Oba’s Palace and was joined by his siblings where the funeral rites continued indoors.

    There was a social wake at the palace attended by some palace Chiefs.

    The Obarisiagbon of Benin Kingdom, Chief Osato Giwa-Osagie, said the Oba never dies but only joined his ancestors for more tranquil and divine life.

    Chief Giwa-Osagie said the entire Benin kingdom would miss Oba Erediauwa’s exemplary leadership style and deep sense of humor.

  • Benin Crowned Prince confers titles on wives

    Crowned Prince of Benin kingdom and Edaiken N’ Uselu, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, on Thursday conferred titles on his three wives also known as the Oloi N’ Erie.

    The conferment of titles was part of the on-going 14 days Iyan-Ehien rites being performed by Prince Erediauwa.

    Iyan-Ehien is supervised by the Ogbe group under the leadership of Ihama N’ Ogbe.

    It is the highest level of chieftaincy rites which served as a gateway for high spiritual attainment.

    Palace chiefs that performed the Iyan-Ehien are accorded special respect.

    The titles were conferred on Prince Erediauwa’s wives at his Palace at Uselu in Egor Local Government at a well attended ceremony.

    First wife of Crown Prince, Princess Iroghama was named the Obazuaye N’ Erie, second wife, Princess Iyayiota was named the Obazuwa N’ Erie while the third wife, Princess Ikpakpa was named the Ohe N’ Erie.

    Chief Osagie Utetenegiabe, the Obadagbonyi of Benin announced the titles to the crowd after a colorful cultural display.

    The Crown Prince was accompanied by his wives.

    Members of the Isekhuen group were present at the occasion.
