Lagos State Government has invested over N4billion in its printing corporation, with the acquisition of new Hi-tech printing machines, Governor Akinwummi Ambode said.

This is to ensure the corporation’s effective performance, Ambode said at the commissioning of the equipment.

Ambode, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the facility would enable the corporation to take its rightful place among contemporary printing outfits on the continent.

“We have repositioned the Lagos State Printing Corporation with the goal of joining the league of well-respected national and global players in the printing industry,” he said.

The governor urged the agency to justify the huge investment by carving out a niche through innovation and dynamic performance.

“You have at your disposal, a facility that will guarantee top quality output, you are to deploy the appropriate human capital in terms of skills, attitude and professionalism,” he said.

The corporation’s General Manager, Mr Sakiru Odusanya, described the machines as the best in the country, saying there is no aspect of printing job that the corporation cannot handle, hence forth.

Odusanya urged ministries, departments, agencies and corporate organisations to make the outfit their first choice in printing, stressing that the era when the corporation could only handle selected printing works was over.

  • ‘How govt can boost printing’

•Firm takes printers to German exhibition

Printers have offered suggestions on how the government can boost the local printing industry to strengthen non-oil revenue and fortify the economy.

Speaking at a workshop organised by Trade Fair Services Limited, the printers agreed there is need for the country to take advantage of the growing machinery by providing incentives for printers to acquire hi-tech equipment to boost the local market.

The workshop is aimed at sensitising printers on the new innovation and technologies to be showcased at Drupa 2016, the world largest printing fair in Dusseldorf, Germany, in May.

Registrar of the Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria (CIPPN) Alhaji Muhammed Abubakar said government should revive local paper mills to bring down the cost of printing. He said high interest rate and over-dependence on foreign expertise by local printers were obstacles hindering the local printing industry.

He said: “Printing technology is growing faster but Nigeria has not fully tapped into this opportunity. Every minute, printers are established and this tells us that the market is wide. The challenge to grow the industry is not to be solved by printers, but the government. We are an import-dependent nation; we don’t manufacture the equipment here. Even the pins that we use in stitching papers are imported.”

Speaking on Drupa 2016, Director of Trade Fair Services Limited, which is the regional representative of Messr Dusseldorf GmbH, Akhigbe Itua, said the event would herald a new shift in innovation to reflect the development brought about by the Internet and digital technologies.

  • APC, LP allege multiple thumb printing in Delta Central

APC, LP allege multiple thumb printing in Delta Central

Agents of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) have accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of promoting multiple thumb-printing by inducing voters with N500 during yesterday’s rescheduled Delta North senatorial district election.

The agents alleged PDP chieftains were busy buying voters with N500 and intimidating them.

On their part, chieftains of the PDP expressed confidence of winning the election.

But the exercise was marred by a poor turnout.

There was, however, no recorded incident of violence.

In Abraka ward 2, unit 7 by Ebenezer Baptist Church, the exercise was peaceful though there were allegations of electoral malpractices.

The House of Rep- elect for Ethiope constituency, Hon. Lovette Idisi, told reporters after casting his vote that the PDP candidate, Chief Ighoyota Amori, will emerge victorious.

This, he said, was because of the structure of the party across the state.

  • Thump printing of ballot papers done in homes of VIPs, says Senator

The governorship candidate of Labour Party (LP) in Akwa Ibom State, Senator Helen Esuene, has described last Saturday’s  elections as a sham.

Esuene, in a statement yesterday, said electoral materials and personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were diverted on their way to polling units and taken to the homes of some VIPs where the voting exercise was illegally conducted.

She explained that such homes were heavily guarded by police officers.

According to her, the state was infused by mercenaries.

The senator also said the election was more of a show of financial strength than capturing of the wishes of the Akwa Ibom people.

She said: “Election materials were diverted on the way to the units, while some were forcefully taken away from units with the assistance of mercenaries to unknown destinations.

“After normal voting by accredited voters, the remaining ballot papers were thump-printed with the full knowledge of INEC officials and security personnel; any agent who tried to resist this was forced out.

“The materials and personnel that were diverted on the way to polling units ended up in the homes of some VIPs where the voting exercise was illegally conducted.  Such homes were heavily guarded by police officers.”

Esuene also said thump printing of ballot papers were done irrespective of the Card Readers.

The senator, who represents Eket in the National Assembly, said in many units the number in the voters’ register were fraudulently inflated, and the cards do not belong to known persons.

“It is common knowledge that the number in the voter register in many units were fraudulently inflated, and the cards do not belong to known persons.  These are the cards that were used to inflate actual voting where the officials want to exhibit some level of caution, she said.

“In other areas, thump printing was done irrespective of the Card Readers.  In order to serve as a deterrent for future elections the result of all such inflated units should be discarded and only the genuine result of the few units be used to compute for the declaration of the winner.”

  • Investor seeks better incentives for printing industry

Investor seeks better incentives for printing industry

The chairman of Academy Press Plc, Chief Simeon Olusola Oguntimehin, has called for better incentives for the printing industry to remain afloat, noting that the company generated a revenue worth of N2.347billion in the year 2014 as against revenue in the previous year which was N2.286billion.

Oguntimehin made the declaration during the company’s 50th Annual General Meeting, held at the company’s premises in Lagos.

He lamented that, the greatest threat to the survival of the printing industry in Nigeria is the importation of print products from abroad for Nigerian consumption, stressing that it has continued to affect the skills and capacity in the country.

“The operating import tariff regime which made importation to be more economically viable for print product buyers to the detriment of local partners has been responsible for this.

“We therefore wish to commend government on its recent pronouncement on measures to encourage industrialization and job creation by amending tariffs that have constituted barriers to these objectives.

We can only hope that the steps being taken in this direction will be sustained to the benefit of the printing industry,” he said.

He maintained that the printing industry in the country has demonstrated that it can sustain the economy if the enabling condition is created.
