  • Promo winners get prizes

    Peace Tidings Venture Ltd (PTV) has rewarded customers who participated in its promo “Level Go Change” in the spirit of the Valentine.

    Speaking at the presentation of the grand prize, a new Hyundai car, the Chief Executive Officer, PTV Phones Ltd, Mr Banji Adesanmi, said in the past two months, the Information Computer Technology (ICT) firm has been waiting for the winners, especially the grand prize winner as part of the company principle of fulfilling promises to customers.

    “In this promo almost hundreds of people have won phones and free credit to everyone that participated in the promo,” he said.

    Among 20 contestants who came for the draw, only 15 were available for the raffle draw, which took place at the company’s head office in the presence of its many customers.

    In the draw, which was done randomly in an open bowl, the contestants displayed their various numbers, first 12 numbers picked out of the 15 contestants. They went with consolation prizes such as Samsung android phone. The lucky three were drawn in the grand Hyundai car which produced Mr. George Nelson, an hotel attendant, as the winner.

    Nelson, who hails from Imo State, was represented by his brother Darlington.

    N1.7m prizes for science contest winners

    It was sweet reward for hard work for pupils, teachers and schools that excelled in this year’s edition of the NNPC/MOBIL/STAN Quiz and Project competition held Uyo, the Akwa Ibom capital as they smiled home with prizes worth N1.7million.

    The competition, which featured written and oral quizzes on science-based subjects as well as science project exhibition was one of the highlights of the 54th conference of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) at the Community Secondary School, Aka Ofot.

    The pupils, who represented Delta, Osun, Imo and Cross River States (Primary Category) and FCT, Abia, Akwa Ibom and Ondo States (secondary category) in the oral quiz final put up a sterling performance that demonstrated they earned their places through hard work.

    The questions, which were structured to test their critical thinking ability and depth of scientific knowledge and its applications, covered areas of Live Sciences (Biology and Physical Health Education), Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics), Mathematical Sciences (General Mathematics and Further Mathematics), Vocational Sciences (Agricultural Science and Home Economics), Technology (Technology and Computer Studies) and Computer Science for the secondary category. The primary participants were tested in Basic Mathematics and Basic Science and Technology.

    At the end of the competition, the team from Delta State, represented by Praprara Owodeha-Ashaka and Ajirioghene Eyehwkwa of DSC Model Primary Schools I and III lifted the trophy in the primary category with 112.25 points. They were followed by Osun in the second position (105.75) and Imo in the third (100.75).

    In the secondary category, it was the duo of Obinna Ukogu and Victoria Okeke that won the trophy for the FCT with 127 points. Abia came second with 120 and Akwa Ibom third with 115.50.

    The winners of the primary category were rewarded with N150,000 while runners up got N100,000. The secondary winners got N200,000 while the runners up got N100,000 courtesy of Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), sponsors of the competition for the past 18 years.

    Individual subject winners of the written quiz were also rewarded with N50,000 cash prizes.

    In the project category, the pupils worked on the theme: “Security Devices” with Doregos Private Academy, Ipaja, Lagos State, lifting the trophy and N100,000 prize for its bomb detector.

    The teacher’s project was won by two-time winner, Mr Olanipekun Eweje who teaches at Government Science Technical College, Ayede-Ekiti in Ekiti State. His project, a fuel less energy generating device for rural dwellers, earned him N300,000 – N200,000 and a laptop worth N100,000.

    He urged government to support the projects exhibited at the conference so they can solve local problems. Speaking on their quiz victory, an elated Victoria Okeke said though they had tough competitors, they were well prepared to win.

    “The students here were extremely good and competitive. It was a tough one but we were well prepared. We attend Loyola Jesuit and are taught to respond well under pressure. The preliminaries in Abuja prepared us for the final,” she said.

    In his speech at the event, Dr Ayodele Fagbemi, Manager, Medicine and Occupational Health, MPN said the oil firm considers it expedient to support STEM activities to encourage young people to take to science and technology.

    He praised STAN for engaging pupils in this regard.

    “We commend STAN’s unwavering dedication to attracting students to science-related fields and to ensuring that anyone who wishes to become an engineer, mathematician or scients will have that opportunity,” he added.

     

  • Special prizes for Cowbell Maths winners

    In celebration of its 20th anniversary this year, the management of Promasidor Nigeria has promised special prizes for winners of this year’s edition of the Cowbell National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC).

    Announcing the start of registration for the competition, Commercial Director, Mr Kachi Onubogu, said at a briefing held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja that many more pupils will benefit this year as each school would be allowed to field three pupils each for the junior and senior secondary categories.

    “Promasidor also increased the number of entries to three students. It will give more outstanding students the opportunity to take part and win amazing branded 20th anniversary year gifts and prizes,” he said.

    Onubogu said the first stage of the competition will take place on March 16 in 200 centres nationwide, adding that the company is targeting 40,000 participants this year, which is the 13th edition. The best two candidates in each state will be invited for a second stage in May while an award ceremony for the winners will take place later in the year.

    Speaking on the objective of the competition, Onibogu said the aim is to awaken the consciousness and interest in mathematics among secondary school pupils in Nigeria.

    “We at Promasidor Nigeria through our flagship brand, Cowbell milk have remained committed to our passion towards improving the overall performance of mathematics amongst the students of our beloved country, Nigeria, while nourishing our tomorrow’s leaders with wholesome healthy milk brands,” he said.

    He said that in 2001, NASSMAC became a national competition covering the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Over the space of five years, Promasidor has been able to increase the participation in the competition from about 16,000 to 35,000 participants which shows a consistent growth in the number of students who take the test every year and their aim of students this year is 40,000.

    The Cowbell NASSMAC is open to pupils from 10 to 18 years in JSS3 and SS2 attending full-time secondary schools in Nigeria.

     

  • Sterling Bank gives out cash, prizes

    Sterling Bank at the weekend gave out cash prize of N2 million to four of its savings customers in the second monthly draw of the bank’s ongoing Savers’ Promo held in Lagos.
    The winners, who won N500,000 each, are Ofosu Yeboah (Alaba Main ETB Branch), Maurice Henry (Utako ETB Branch), Opakunle Muyibat Keinde (Iwo Road Branch) and Bienonwulu Loveth of (Asaba Branch).

    Other 10 customers also won home theatres and refrigerators as consolation prizes. They include Olatunde Aina, Rufai Oladunni, Onwuka Agbai, Abba Simon, Dioni Asemo among others.

    The winners emerged after electronic draws witnessed by Consumer Protection Council (CPC), National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC), the media and members of staff of the bank. All the 14 winners emerged from 22,814 qualified entries pooled during the draws.

    The bank’s Group Head, Liability Products and Bancassurance, John Akingbade, said that the promo was about rewarding customer loyalty and promoting financial inclusion in the economy. He said the bank is giving priority to the need to firm its financial inclusion strategy to enable it bank millions of the unbanked within the population. “We are aware of the need to enhance financial inclusion and bring the unbanked into the financial system,” he said.

    Akingbade explained that to achieve this, the bank is promoting a classic savings account that allows prospective customers to open account with the bank with zero balance. He said the target of the bank is to ensure that more and more people within the unbanked population are captured into the financial system.

    “We are reaching out to the informal segment of the population like barbers, mechanics, technicians, tailors, and other small retail outlets that have been excluded from banking services,” he said.
    The promo is also expected to strengthen the bank’s deposit liabilities and position it to compete favourably in the industry.

    This qualifies them to win N500, 000 and other gift items such as blackberry phones, home theaters, refrigerators, microwave ovens among others.He encouraged customers of the bank to save more as such will increase their chances of winning the prizes.

    A representative of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Mrs Ngozika Obidike, said the commission was happy with the progress made so far in the second draw. She confirmed that the promo was registered with the commission and apologised for the omission of th bank’s name in a recently published advert on registed promos in the country. “The promo is transparent. The bank’s promo was also registered with CPC. It was an outright omission on our part. The Council will apologise to the bank and will include the lender in the next publication,” she said.

    Obidike said the bank has shown a lot of commitment in ensuring that its customers are rewarded an effort, she said, should be emulated by other banks.
