    PDP convention: I ‘m aggrieved but hopeful, says Adedoja

    A defeated chairmanship candidate in the just concluded national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof Taoheed Adedoja has expressed his grievances with the conduct of the exercise, but said he’s hopeful on the future of the party.

    Adedoja, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja on Sunday said he was not happy about the outcome of the convention, regretting that the party has failed to learn from its past mistakes.

    The former Sports and Special Duties Minister who got no vote at the convention, pleaded with members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party to set up a committee to investigate what went wrong with the conduct of the exercise.

    According to him, it’s only an insane person that would say that the convention went through due process, saying “the exercise was characterised by impunity, which he said, must be reviewed in order to avert futher crisis in the party.

    “A week to our convention, a list tagged ‘unity list’ emerged with names of the winners in the convention circulating around. So the BoT should find out what went wrong”, he said.

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the Senate Monday night met with six aspirants to the position of the party’s National Chairman.

    The meeting, which was still holding at the Asokoro private residence of the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

    The aspirants that appeared before the senators included Chief Olabode George, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, Prince Uche Secondus, Prof Taoheed Adedoja and Mr Jimi Agbaje.

    The purpose of the meeting, which was being chaired by Akpabio was to interact with the aspirants, with the view to determining the suitability of each of the aspirants for the position of chairman.

    Secondus and Agbaje who are in their 50s, are the youngest of the aspirants and are considered late entrants into the race.

    George and Adeniran are in their 70s while Dokpesi and Adedoja are in their mid-60s.

    The aspirants are billed to also meet with the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi shortly before today’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the party’s Abuja secretariat.

    The NEC will be considering approval for the December 9 date and venue for the convention.

    A chairmanship candidate in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, said on Monday he has what it takes to lead the party and reposition it to greatness.

    Adedoja, a former Minister of Sports and Special Duties, spoke in Lagos.

    The PDP chieftain said the party needed a leader with the right vision, right ideas, experience and energy to move to it greater heights.

    He said: “Our party needs a leader with the right vision, somebody with fresh ideas and not recycled ideas.

    “Someone who is energetic, someone who is accepted and acceptable to party members and the masses.

    “Our party needs a leader who can offer solutions, someone which experience who would give everyone a sense of belonging and carry everybody along.

    “I believe I have all these attributes, I believe we can do it together and that is why I am volunteering or offering to serve as chairman of our great party.”

    Adedoja said his long years of experience in the public service as a former minister with joint portfolios and as university lecturer would add value to his leadership of the party.

    He said his interactions with people of various backgrounds having schooled and lived in the different parts of the country would enable him to deliver broad-based leadership in the party.

  • Guber poll: 10 vie for PDP ticket in Oyo

    The number of aspirants seeking to clinch the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial ticket ahead of the 2015 general elections in Oyo State has increased to 10, the latest entrant to the race being foremost engineer and CEO of Jogor Centre, Engr. Femi Babalola, who submitted his letter of intent to the party’s leadership over the weekend.

    By his declaration, Babalola has joined the likes of former Governor of the state, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala; former State Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Soji Adejumo; former Deputy Governor of the state, Hazeem Gbolarumi; renowned Ibadan based Engineer, Seyi Makinde; current Minister of State of the FCT, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide and former Deputy governor, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja.

    Others who had earlier declared their governorship ambitions are – Senator Teslim Folarin, a  former Senate leader and Prof. Taoheed Adedoja.

    The divergence of interests, notwithstanding, The Nation can authoritatively report that Akala had started making moves to reconcile various feuding factions within the party.

    Babalola, who happens to be his aide and close associate, believes that the former governor’s efforts were yielding positive results.

    According to him, Akala had succeeded in settling the scores between him and Akinjide.

    Both politicians had been at loggerheads before the current truce.

     

  • Arisekola-Alao’s wife dies, buried

    Alhaja Risikat Arisekola-Alao, the first wife of foremost business merchant and Islamic leader Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Arisekola-Alao, died on Thursday in Ibadan at the age of 68 and was buried on Friday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mrs. Arisekola-Alao died after a brief illness from an unidentified ailment.

    She was born on January 4, 1945, and was buried according to Islamic rites at the Arisekola-Alao’s residence at Bashorun in Ibadan.

    The Chief Imam of Ibadan, Sheikh Haruna Saora, in his sermon, urged the people to move closer to Allah.

    He added that the deceased lived a fulfilled life.

    Similarly, Sheikh Muideen Bello, an Islamic scholar and preacher, urged the people to live in accordance with the rules ordained by Allah and urged the people to change.

    “It is not too late for you to change from your negative ways of life.

    NAN reports that the burial was attended by eminent personalities among, whom were the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Moses Adeyemi and Alhaji Waheed Olajide, the Secretary to the Oyo State Government.

    Also in attendance were Chief Oba Otudeko, Prince Bola Afonja, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Elder Wole Oyelese, Chief Lekan Alabi, Alhaji Lamidi Ajadi and Chief Bayo Oyero.

    Others were Chief Niyi Akintola (SAN), retired Gen. Raji Rasaki, Chief Sharafadeen Alli, Alhaja Aminat Abiodun and renowned gospel musician, Mr. Yinka Ayefele.
