  • Minister, monarch hail Ajimobi’s urban renewal programme

Minister of Mines and Steel Development Musa Sada and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Ajagungbade, have praised the urban renewal programme of the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration.

Sada spoke on Monday during a visit to the governor in his office in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said he was impressed with the beautification of the environment, adding that it has changed the face of Ibadan and major towns in the state.

The minister said: “I was in Oyo State on an official visit about two years ago and as an architect, I am very impressed with what I am seeing now. A lot of attention has been paid to the environment.”

He thanked the state government for its cooperation and support to the Federal Government on the exploitation of mineral resources in Oyo.

Sada, who was in Ibadan to open an International Conference on Mining and Geo-Sciences, said: “It is not a coincidence that the conference is taking place in Oyo State, which happens to be one of the major mining states in the country. This largely influenced the selection of Ibadan for this important conference.”

Noting that there had been no controversy between the Federal Government and Oyo over the control of minerals, he said: “I thank you for supporting our efforts to exploit Nigeria’s mineral wealth for the benefit of the people.”

The minister said 34 types of minerals had been discovered in about 500 locations in the country.

He said the Federal Government would assist states in the exploitation of mineral resources.

Ajimobi, who was represented by his deputy, Chief Moses Adeyemo, urged the Federal Government to diversify the nation’s economy from oil and exploit other avenues of revenue generation.

He said the state government would partner the Federal Government to ensure that Oyo’s mineral resources are fully exploited for the benefit of the people.

The Soun of Ogbomoso spoke in his palace while hosting the State Compensation Team, led by the Commissioner for information, Taiwo Otegbeye.

The team is charged with the responsibility of compensating people, whose buildings were demolished to give room for the right-of-way.

Oba Ajagungbade urged the governor to dualise more roads in the town.

At a meeting with the claimants, Otegbeye warned them to beware of fraudsters, adding that the government has not asked anybody to collect money from them before they are compensated.

He said compensation would be paid to legal owners of the demolished structures after enumeration and valuation.

Otegbeye said there was need to clarify family houses, personal houses and communal structures to prevent a legal tussle over the payment.

  • NAICOM may review MDRI programme

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) may review the Market Development and Restructuring Initiative (MDRI) designed to enhance the industry’s growth, The Nation has learnt.

The Commissioner for Insurance Fola Daniel, who disclosed this in a telephone interview, said NAICOM will next year review the guidelines of the initiative to align it for better performance.

He said the review is one of the commission’s programmes for the new year.

It was learnt that the review became necessary due to the failure of the industry to achieve projections envisaged for it in the first phase where a target of N 1 trillion premium income was to be attained.

Managing Director Riskguard-Africa Nigeria Limited Yemi Soladoye said delay in the implementation of the initiatives affected the projections set to be achieved, adding that the programme was meant to start in 2009, but never took-off until 2011.

He noted that to recover the lost period, there should be a shift in the deliverables to make-up for the difference between the time of the strategy crafting and implementation. He said the N1 trillion premium income projection was to be achieved with a four-year strategic plan, adding that there is no way the target would be achieved, with the commencement of implementation of the initiative a year to the set deadline.

He said: “Most people are reading the strategy document and not relating it to when implementation took off. If there is a projection that in four years we will get N1 trillion premium and from the implementation document, we were to start in 2009, we had what we are to achieve in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. So, N1 trillion is in four years. If implementation started in 2011, it will be a case of shifting the deliverables forward based on the difference on the ground between the strategy crafting and the implementation”.

He said the initiative is remarkable in the history of the industry.

He noted that the initiative cannot be wished away as it has brought about many developments adding that efforts by NAICOM to reposition the industry through micro-insurance, takaful and more are strategic plans stated in the MDRI document.

  • Rights group to sue Okorocha for ‘fraudulent education programme’

The Executive Director, Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and

Social Rights, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu, has said the organisation would sue the Imo State Government for alleged fraudulent education programme that has forced several children out of the school.

Ononamadu spoke in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, during a two-day training for community leaders.

The training was organised by CLEEN Foundation in collaboration with Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and Social Rights.

The activist said the Rochas Okorocha education policy has caused untold headship among parents.

He noted that the cost of textbooks and other instructional materials since the inception of Okorocha administration has forced many Imo children out of school.

Ononamadu said most parents cannot afford the cost of textbooks, adding that the suit would correct the anomaly of removing tuition fee and imposing high cost of textbooks on parents.

He said: “I will soon institute a legal action against the Imo State Government. What we have in Imo State is not free education; rather, what we have is fools’ education. The Imo State Government announced to the people that it is running a free education but Imo school children are out of classroom.

“You may ask: why are they out of the classrooms? It’s because the cost of textbooks and other instructional materials has so much been hiked that most Imo parents can no longer afford them. People are complaining and I have decided to take it upon myself to ensure that this anomaly is urgently corrected.”
