    Jonathan promises better electoral process

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday in Jerusalem promised to stabilise Nigeria’s electoral process.

Jonathan, who made the promise at an interdenominational service for 2013 Nigerian pilgrims, said the process is better now than previously.

“We promise that we must do a number of things differently. We have challenges in our electoral system, but at least it is better than what it was yesterday,” he said, adding: “Let me reassure you that even though our nation is passing through challenges this period, God has made it possible for us to pray at a period like this.’’

The President decried the high level of vandalism of petroleum pipelines and electric poles by criminals in the country.

The President said his administration would continue to improve the living condition of Nigerians.

He enjoined Nigerians to continue to pray for the country, saying that evil forces would never succeed in their evil ways.

“I assure you that things will continue to improve for the better as Nigeria will no longer be the same.”

He expressed gratitude for the Yitshak Rabin Family Award for Good Leadership conferred on him and for the naming of the Yitshak Rabin School in Port Harcourt after him.

Jonathan said Nigeria and the state of Israel would continue to be friends.

Mr John-Kennedy Okpara, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission, said over 30,000 Nigerian pilgrims were transported to the Holy land annually, compared to 4,000 pilgrims transported five years ago.

He advised pilgrims to see pilgrimage as a time for spiritual rebirth and a divine encounter with God.

The high point of the occasion was the decoration of Jonathan with the JP title and the conferment of the Yitshak Rabin Award for Good Leadership Award on him.

Other dignitaries, who were decorated with the JP title, include Governors Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Jonah Jang (Plateau).

On Saturday in Nazareth, the President performed the symbolic candle lighting at the Church of Mount Camel, the place where the Biblical contest between Prophet Elijah and the 400 false prophets of Baal took place.

The President also visited River Jordan, the place where Jesus Christ was baptised by John the Baptist. He prayed before dipping his hands seven times into the river.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the President and members of the Presidential Pilgrimage Team also visited the Church of Annunciation, otherwise known as Basillica of the Annunciation, the place where Angel Gabriel broke to Virgin Mary the news of her conception.

Other places visited by the team were the Holy Family Church in Nazareth and the Cana Wedding Church in Galilee. They took a boat drive along the shores of the Sea of Galilee and visited the Mount of Beatitudes.

President Jonathan had on the second day of the pilgrimage visited the Jerusalem Old City, Pool of Bethesda, Wailing Wall, where he prayed privately, the Tomb of Jesus Christ where he also prayed after leading the Fourteen Stations of the Cross.

  • House promises to pass PIB into law

House promises to pass PIB into law

Chairman of the committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Hon Ajibola Muraino, yesterday assured that the House of Representatives will pass the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) into law.

Muraino, who spoke while the Committee was at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Abuja, for its oversight functions, the lawmakers are fine- tuning the bill in accordance with international best practice.

He said : “The Committee isputting finishing touch to the bill. We are trying to look at the other jurisdictions of the  world so that we can come up with a world class legislation. This one we will get it done particularly with the situation of things,“ adding that the House will continue to look into the activities of the NNPC.

He  said there was a joint Committee meeting on the petroleum upstream delivery, adding that the legislators have called on the Federal Government to implement the resolutions.

NNPC Group Managing Director, Andrew Yakubu, told the Committee that following the security measures put in place by the Federal Government, the production of crude oil has risen from 2.1million barrels per day to 2.4million barrels per day, saying, “as we speak today, we have recorded a significant improvement in checking pipeline vandalism. And as of two days ago, the report I got from the industry has also recorded a significant drop in the theft.”

According to the NNPC boss, the issue of vandalism and security of oil installations are receiving the highest attention from all the stakeholders.

He said before the lawmakers went on recess there was a public hearing on oil theft and vandalism from which the House  passed some resolutions.

Yakubu added that the resolutions were the major ingredients incorporated into the strategies to curb oil theft.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC has said that the massive ongoing gas pipeline projects across the country will provide a veritable platform for individual homes and estates to be linked with gas pipelines to enhance its domestic use.

  • Jonathan’s 2013 promises

    Jonathan’s 2013 promises

SIR: It seems that President Goodluck Jonathan has forgotten that he made promises to Nigerians to improve on security and well-beings of the people. Nigerians are still being killed everyday. His response to the incessant criticism by the opposition parties shortly after he came to power was his promise to surprise them in 2013.

We are now in the fifth month of 2013. We do not know when precisely the surprises will begin to manifest or is it that the president is still working on it or perhaps that the calendar in Aso Rock still reads 2012?

Nigerians were not moved by the promise neither did it sound strange because since the advent of democracy, Nigerians had been victims of continuous lies and manipulations by the PDP led administrations.

The fact is that, Jonathan’s, regime like the ones we have had before him, has been overwhelmed by development challenges. Because the leaders put their personal interests first, they put minimal efforts to finding lasting solutions to the challenges facing the nation hence they project false hopes.

Today, nothing is working in Nigeria. There are rampant poverty, security challenges, incessant power outage, bad roads, bad leadership and poor education. All these were bred by corruption.

No government can achieve anything meaningful when it is surrounded by crooks and mediocres. If the president really wants to get it right, he should step on toes and not to grant undue pardon to thieves.

Nigeria is blessed with enormous resources yet majority of its population live in abject poverty. The current security challenges in some northern parts of the country have shown that this administration is weak and therefore, Nigerians need to rise and come together with a view to salvaging the country from imminent collapse.

Ogunbote promises to turn Sharks around

The new coach of Sharks football club of Port Harcourt, Gbenga Ogunbote has insisted that the Blue Angels will not be relegated despite their poor start to the season.

The former Sunshine Stars coach made the assertion when he was unveiled during the Port Harcourt derby between Sharks and Dolphins,

“The season is still young, a lot can still happen. I know we dont have a perfect team, but with time I believe we can turn things around,” Ogunbote said in a recorded interview made available to futaa.com.

“The most important thing is taking up a challenge and I don’t run from that

“I know that by the grace of God, I am going to end up in an appreciable position. We are not going to talk of relegation, the target is to finish the season well.”

Ogunbote comes well recommended, as he led Sunshine Stars to two semi finals in the two major African Club Championships in back-to-back competitions.

Yisa said his administration would computerize activities in the council for efficiency.

He said: “It is one of the core objectives of this administration to computerize the local council for efficient and effective performance, to this end, a total sum of N5,767,901.89 is allocated for this project.”

He added that security would be given attention.

He pleaded with the councillors to always support him and implored community leaders to stand by him.

Yisa said: “The Leader of the Legislative Arm and all the councillors have been very supportive to this administration, please let us continue in that manner.

“However, l implore our residents, community leaders and other stakeholders to sincerely perform their civil responsibilities by making prompt payments of their taxes and rates so that we can implement our programmes and projects successfully.”

The Leader of the Eti-Osa East legislative Council, Hon. Kabiru Sulaimon, thanked the chairman for his achievements.

Sulaimon said: “It is common knowledge to the generality of the public that the Council Secretariat is wearing a new look and also some part of the Local Council Development, Area for example the construction of Modern Primary Health Centre in Araromi, Modern Medical Laboratory in Ogombo, blocks of classrooms in Olomu Primary School Ajah and Okun-Ajah primary School and other areas within our locality have started enjoying the dividend of democracy within our one year and few months in office, I want to believe that with this successful passage of year 2013 budget vis-à-vis its implementation will bring more development to the people and our environment.

  • Agbaso: Judge promises fair hearing

Justice Florence Duruohaigwe of an Owerri High Court, yesterday, assured all parties in the motion by the embattled Imo State Deputy Governor, Jude Agbaso, to stop his impeachment by the House of Assembly that she will ensure justice prevails.

But she warned that she will not be intimidated by counsels to the parties, who are incidentally Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) in the course of discharging her duties.

The judge spoke while listening to the argument of the House’s counsel, Niyi Akintola (SAN).

Justice Duruohaigwe said since the beginning of the case, both counsel had been threatening her in their submissions.

According to her, she has raised children who would take care of her even if she loses her job.

“I cannot be intimidated even if I lose my job but I will carry out my duty without fear or favour,” she assured.

Agbaso’s counsel Patrick Ikweto (SAN) told the court that the respondent infringed on his client’s rights by investigating and indicting him in its report.

Ikweto argued that the House ought not to have dabbled into the investigation of the alleged N458 million contract scam, because that was the role of security agencies.

But Akintola told the court to disregard the argument since the court lacked jurisdiction in the matter, which is the responsibility of the House to carry out.

In his argument, the counsel to the Chief Judge, Soronadi Njoku, who also is the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, told the court to dismiss the suit because the applicant wanted to hide under the fundamental human rights to truncate the impeachment proceeding against him.

The court adjourned till today for ruling on the issue of jurisdiction.

    Vanzekin promises Heartland hell

Vanzekin who missed the first league match against Sharks of PortHarcourt last week told our reporter that he has his eyes with the Super Eagles no matter what is happening now and the only way he can convince the National Team handlers of his readiness is to do well in the league.

” I am ready to take my place in the National Team and I want to use the league starting from the match against Heartland to convince the coaches that I still have what it takes to be in the National Team,” he said.

“I know what I can do and I have done it before. All I need to do is to be consistent in the league and the coaches will not hesitate to invite me. As for Heartland, it is a pity they are coming this time. They will go home empty handed as we are equal to the task.”

Let them change the tone of the match and we the players will give them what they want by playing good football. We assure them of victory against Heartland on Thursday (today) because we are battle ready,” he enthused.

    Emenike promises more goals

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike has promised goals at the AFCON after he grabbed the match winner against Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday.

Emenike’s second-half strike against Sparta gave the Eagles their first win in their build-up for the AFCON.

His other Eagles goal in over a dozen games was against Argentina last year June.

The powerfully-built striker is the arrow head of top Russian club Spartak Moscow after his heroics in Turkey with Karabukspor and he told MTNFootball.com he is confident of being among the goal scorers at the AFCON in South Africa.

Emenike also urged the fans to stand by the team in South Africa.

  • ACN promises to create new council in Ose

ACN promises to create new council in Ose

An Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chieftain, Alhaji Lateef Raji, has asked the electorate to reject Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko on Saturday because he has not lived up to expectation. He said the state deserves to have a better captain to steer its ship and fulfill the wish of the people.

Raji, who is the Lagos State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, is currently leading a door-to-door campaign on the Ire-Akari axis in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State. The politician, who hails from Ido-Ani, lamented the dearth of infrastructural facilities in the town, Idogun, Imeri and Afo, saying their labour has been in vain under the Labour Party (LP) government.

He assured that ACN would create a new local government out of Ose council to be called Ire-Akari Local Government in fulfillment of the grassroots yearning of the people, for easy administration and development.

  • Mimiko’s many failed promises

    Mimiko’s many failed promises

As the campaign trains of the various political parties hit the nooks and crannies of Ondo State, canvassing for the people’s votes, attention has been drawn to alleged non-performance by incumbent Governor Segun Mimiko by critical stakeholders in the state who maintain that he does not deserve a second term. AUGUSTINE AVWODE reports.

What should qualify an incumbent for re-election?

Should the electorate critically examine how far he was able to march words with action in terms of the promises he made when asking for their votes the previous time? Should his sense of prudence or profligacy be examined?

Experts are agreed that, the electorate should be more discerning in taking the critical decision. At a recent one-day sensitization workshop for party executives, stakeholders and candidates ahead of the October 20 governorship election in Ondo State organized by the Special Adviser to the President on Inter Party Affairs Senator Ben Ndi Obi, described it as the “moment of truth” and a “nightmare to nonperforming politicians” in his opening remarks.

According to him, “periodic elections remain paramount in a democratic dispensation because it is the moment of truth for both the leader and the led. “While election is a nightmare to nonperforming politicians, a great expectation it is to the people as it affords them the opportunity to choose their leaders as well as drop nonperforming ones”.

This is the yardstick the Concerned Citizens of Ondo State (CCO) want the people to apply at this critical moment. The group, in a detailed and well articulated document, catalogued the many promises which the governor made but has failed to deliver on just as it also listed critical projects started by the previous administration of Dr Olusegun Agagu abandoned by Mimiko.

The group alleged that in the last three and a half years, that the Mimiko administration has been in power, it has been blessed with the good fortune of raking in more than N400 billion as allocation from the Federation Account, in addition to the now well known N38 billion it inherited from the Agagu administration.

The document obtained exclusively by The Nation, gives a detailed analysis of what the administration claimed to have done in the three senatorial districts of the state; what the governor promised to do but failed to i and the projects inherited but abandoned.

In all, while the administration can lay claim to only three verifiable projects it accomplished in Ondo North, it could only boast of six in Ondo Central while in the South senatorial district, it has only three projects to its credit.

These projects are mainly market stalls, town halls, a Mega School, water fountains, bus stops, the much publicized Mother and Child hospital and some uncompleted or abandoned road projects.

In the northern district, the group listed “the construction of markets stalls at some locations in the senatorial district, the construction of town halls at some locations and the only project that could be regarded as the most outstanding of all is the construction of one mini Mega School in Oka Akoko” as all the administration can lay claim to in the last three and a half years.

In Ondo Central, among the six items listed are “uncompleted Mega Schools five uncompleted and abandoned road expansion projects in both Akure and Ondo”, two major towns in the zone. The south senatorial district which does not fare better, has “ market stalls at some locations town halls and the construction of one Mega School in Okitipupa”.

    Failed promises

Those who insist that promises are better not made than fail to keep them feel affronted on account of the failed promises allegedly made by Governor Mimiko while seeking for the votes of the people of Ondo three and a half years ago.

The people of Ondo North are worst hit as the list shows important projects that could have impacted positively on their lives. They include the “ dualisation of Owo Township roads, construction of mechanic villages in all the local government areas, dualisation of the township roads in all the local government headquarters , the Construction of Mother and Child Hospital in each local government area, the Arigidi Akoko Tomato Industry on which more than over N200 million has been spent, establishment of the Okeluse Cement Factory, construction of Mega Schools in all the local government areas, Kaadi Igbeayo designed for job creation and empowerment of artisans but abandoned after spending more than N2 billion creation of local government areas after spending about N600 million the promise to resurscitate the Ifon Ceramic Industry and the Alpha 3D Factory in Ikare”.

The list of un- kept promises to the Central senatorial District reads more or less the same with those of other districts but there is also “the Dome which is yet to be delivered after allegedly spending about N4 billion, and the 40,000 capacity Akure New Sports Stadium.”

In the South senatorial district, the failed promises include “ rehabilitation of township roads, reactivation of Okitipupa Oil Factory, reactivation of Oluwa Glass Industry, construction of Mega Schools in all local government areas,” among others.

Among the projects described as “ people oriented” which were on before the Mimiko administration came into office and which he is reported to have abandoned or jettisoned are the Ifon Games Reserves, Ifon Ceramic Inustry, Akungba Township Roads, Imeri Bridge, Owo – Ikare- Ajowa Road, the Igedegede Bridge, water work at Owo, Egbe and Ido Ani. A Cassava Flour processing factory, at Oba Akoko, the Emure- Eporo road, Ikare township roads and Ifira-Sosan asphalting”.

Those abandoned in the Central district include the “Akure township stadium, he multibillion naira Owena multipurpose dam, Idanre Golf Course, Idanre Hill UNESCO World Heritage Project, Akure township roads (asphalting), Ondo township roads (asphalting), and the Ogbese-Igbatoro road.

In the South senatorial district, the administration is said to have abandoned the following: “Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa, Adagbakuja New Town for land strapped Ilajes, Olokola Free Trade Zone and Sea Port Project, Oluwa Industrial Park, Omotosho, Oluwa Bridge linking Okitipupa to Irele, Igbokoda-Igbonla Road, Aboto-Olokola road, Ajagba-Iyansan road, Ajagba-Ijuosun road, Ode-Aye Igbotako road, Akinfosile-Ayede road, Inikorogha-Oboro road, Atijere-Aboto and Ayetumara-Itebukunmi road.”

Of the three major parties, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have consistently accused Mimiko of non-performance and held that he does not deserve the votes of Ondo people for a second term in office.

    Agagu reacts

In a recent interview, former Governor Agagu described Mimiko as a failure. In his review of the three and a half years of the administration, Agagu, who is leading the charge for the PDP campaign, reckoned that the people are not happy because of the “downturn in their economic well being”.

His words: “From my interaction with the people, they are not happy as their economic well-being has taken a down-turn. They cannot see any hope in the horizon. Infrastructure around them is beginning to decay from the level where it was before. Those who had good roads no longer have them because they have depreciated. You know every road needs to be maintained. The road projects started by my administration were discontinued. Those who had good water supply, especially through the network of solar powered-bore holes, don’t have them anymore because the maintenance culture that was put in place was jettisoned. The expectations of the people to have pipe-borne water in their homes in the entire central senatorial district of six local government areas; which was about to happen by the time the PDP administration left, has been dashed because the government jettisoned the Owena multi-purpose dam project. “It a very comprehensive agricultural revival programme that goes through farm settlement centres in every local government, horticulture farm, hatchery in each of the three senatorial districts to produce 5 million fingerlings each to help our people in aquaculture.

“The one that is in Akure is not running very well; the one in Okitipupa, though completed, has not been commissioned by the government and the one in Owo has been jettisoned. The oil palm company that was working before is nowhere, the Ifon Ceramic and the Oluwa Glass companies that were about to be revived through injection of new capitals by well-established companies were jettisoned, the Omotosho/Oluwa Industrial Park has been jettisoned, the Olokola Free Trade Zone, which was meant to energize industrial development, not only in Ondo State or Nigeria, but in the West African context has been jettisoned. “We can go on and on. Enlightened people understand these things. They also understand why the economy is on the downturn, and therefore, they all think this administration must change. Those who are not literate enough to know why the economic downturn is there can feel it, and they all believe that the administration must change. But it won’t come on a platter of gold. There is not going to be a fight, it is going to be tough. But we have the best product on offer, a good candidate and a past that the people now know is better than the present.”

Akeredolu: No more room for deception

In the same vein, the candidate of the ACN in the October 20 election, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, said he harbours not the least doubt that Mimiko would be rejected by the people because he has failed to live up to expectation. He said that the people of the state are not foolish.

“ But I don’t have any doubt in my mind that he is going to lose. And if we are to look at it critically again, are the people of Ondo State foolish? They are not.”

On the much-orchestrated Oba Adesida road, Akeredolu said: “I mean we are talking about Oba Adesida Road. The road has been there all the while, with street lights on it and then you remove them and put other ones. At what cost? There is no project today he can commission except for the markets which are responsibilities of the local governments. And this is someone who has refused to conduct election at local government levels. And the markets, nobody is even going there. Just drive through Ondo state and you will see that there are no people in those markets. Some people have refused to go to the markets because they believe they are more or less rituals stuff. Of course, I don’t believe in such any way because they don’t mean anything to me.

“The other one, you force people to go and be building town halls. What has the state government got to do with the building of town halls? What are the people there to do? These are what people could raise money among themselves to build. And in fact some of these town halls are already collapsing. In Opete for instance, a side of the town hall wall has collapsed. So for a government that has not achieved anything, except hardship. The economy is grounded. How do you expect people to retain it? You need to go to Ondo state, the whole place is dry. There is no money. That is the reality people of Ondo state are facing and many people who are not there don’t know. And that’s the reason we are confident we are going to win.”

    Mimiko’s defence

But in apparent defence of his tenure and justification of his actions so far in office, Mimiko told a campaign rally in the state last week that he would continue to work for the people as he has been working since day one when he stepped into office.

“In 2007, we promised to work for you; we promised that your concern shall be our concern; that in all seasons, we would work for you; that we shall unleash our incredible creative ingenuity to develop the state. In the last three and half years, there are empirical facts on the ground that we have delivered on our promises and Ondo State is working again and we are happier. We have in place over 350 projects in all our rural communities dictated by our people themselves”

Given the claims and the counter claims, the fact that the people of the state are enlightened, the October 20 election would be a veritable opportunity for them to demonstrate to the world that indeed, like Akeredolu described them, they are ready to take control of their collective destiny.
