Edo: Prophet remanded for defiling daughter

An Ogbeson Magistrate Court has remanded one Prophet Benjamin Bernard to prison custody for allegedly defiling his seven years old daughter.

Prophet Benjamin, aged 41, is one of the presiding pastors of Destiny Explosion Ministry located in Benin City.

He was alleged to have committed the incest on 26th January 2016.

The victim was his third daughter

Prophet Benjamin pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The victim during her testimony by the prosecuting Counsel from the state Ministry of Justice, Kenneth Ugiagbe, told the court that her father used a white handkerchief to clean her private part after committing the act.

She said her father warned her not to mention the act to anyone or he would kill her.

Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Taye Omoruyi ordered the accused remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to March 16 for further hearing.

Prophet sets member ablaze in church

•‘God asked me to do it’

There was confusion on Sunday at Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) on Unity Street in Abule-Egba, Lagos, when a prophet set a member ablaze during service.

The victim, simply identified as Madam Bosede, is lying critically ill in hospital.

It was gathered that the prophet in his sermon claimed he got a revelation that there was God in their midst, adding that if the woman was set ablaze she would not suffer burns.

Madam Bosede, who joined the church a month ago told The Nation yesterday: “Our prophet said the spirit of God whispered to him that I would not burn if he sets me on fire. When I came out, they poured kerosene on my body and set me ablaze. But, unfortunately, I was burnt beyond recognition and before the other church members could get water, the deed had already been done.”

The cleric told The Nation that he clearly heard a voice instructing him to set a member on fire to prove and confirm that God was in their midst.

“I heard the voice clearly, but I don’t know what happened after we set fire on her. God has been speaking to me since and it has been working, so I wonder why now,” he said.

Some members, however, left the church, doubting their prophet’s credibility, adding: “We cannot worship here again, who knows who the spirit will ask him to burn next.”

A resident, Irene Ohekina said: “I don’t pity her; she was the one who allowed herself to be deceived by the prophet. Why did the prophet not try the fire on himself or any of his family member?”

Another resident, Nkechi said for the prophet to have given such instruction, it must have come from God, adding “I believe it’s the sins of the victim that made her burn, the prophet of God could not have lied.”

Daniel Ayodele, who also witnessed the incident said: “This whole thing is funny, when the pastor said the woman should be set on fire, why did she not refuse or was she scared to disobey the prophet. Now, she is writhing in pains on the hospital bed and I am sure the prophet is elsewhere enjoying himself.”

Prophet to Buhari: Beware of defectors to APC

The Shepherd-in-charge of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), The Greatest God Chapel, Prophet Israel Nasiri, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari that most of the defectors to the All Progressives Congress (APC) will work against his good intentions for the nation.

Most of them, he stated, must be done away with by the President before he can succeed in his drive to change the nation.

Nasiri, in a statement last week, said: “”Buhari will have a lot of problems. It was the people that spoilt PDP that are deflecting to APC. Nigerians knew that Tambuwal for instance was a PDP man.

“You cannot tell me that he didn’t have good relationship with personalities like former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo.

“Buhari should note that as most of these politicians conspired against Jonathan and got rid of him, they could do the same thing for him.

“If Buhari wants to succeed, he should be a friend to politicians with unstable policies but never to entrust anything in their hands.”

He added: “Growth means improvement from limited level to unlimited. Nigerians have been clamouring for change in churches, mosques, market places and everywhere.

“But God told me that Nigeria does not need change; they need growth. Nigeria needs to grow spiritually, economically, religiously and so on.

“Change means moving or shifting from one place or thing to another. God said Nigerians are deceiving themselves. What kind of change are we talking about?

“Is it change from good to bad or bad to good? We are crying for change but have we defined the kind of change we desire?”

He went on: “Nigeria needs growth and not change. I advise the new president and other elected officers including governors to consider this.

“You can only grow with Christ with good conscience. For instance, Ekiti people were clamouring for change. I think they have seen change but they are crying today.”

Nasiri said politicians should not hide behind religion to destroy the nation, claiming that the leaders have used religion to destabilise Nigeria.

“A nation is a group of people leaving in a unit together guided by constitution. Every human being has different beliefs. We may have different God but it is obvious that people profess they have one creator.”

The cleric called on political leaders to be focused on services, shunning violence and wickedness.

  • Strange prophet comes to town

    Strange prophet comes to town

•Eye witnesses narrate how he heals the sick and revives the near dead

He came to Nigeria from Libreville in 2013 and has been wearing same clothes; going without a bath since March 2014; living on the streets and generally raising concerns about his state of mind. But he claims he is on a divine mission and following God’s instruction. Curiously, witnesses also testify to the efficacy of his prayers and how the high and mighty throng to him for miracles. Taiwo Abiodun reports.

His appearance raises questions. His clothes are torn, hair and beard overgrown and unkempt, like that of a Rastafarian, and his fingernails unusually long. He also has not had a bath for one year; so he proudly announced, and does not possess any kind of belonging, save his Bible, ECOWAS passport and cell phone. For his strange ways, the police have arrested him several times and released him, after he was able to prove himself to be a man of God and of sound mind.

For a good part of last year, residents and commuters in the Ikotun area, where he has pitched his tent, also took him for a mad man as he roamed the streets. Some expressed grave suspicion at his appearance, which they thought deceptive and that he could be out to execute some sinister plans.

However, many of those who nursed this fear last year are now singing a new song, calling him Baba, Pastor, prophet, man of God and going to him for prayers.

They also now jealously guard and protect him, as this reporter found out in the process of this interview. Unknown to him, the people at his BRT Bust terminus abode in Ikotun were watching his interaction with the ‘man of God’ with  suspicion and promptly accosted him with a “Where are you taking our father?

One of them explained after this reporter had introduced himself and mission that “we thought you are a police officer who wanted to arrest our Papa. He is our spiritual father.”

Settling down to answer questions from the reporter, the strange prophet said “I arrived Nigeria two years ago; this month will make it exactly one year since I’ve been wearing these same clothes , same underwear without having my bath, and without brushing my mouth or cutting my fingernails, as directed by God.”

He also said he would not do anything about his appearance or hygiene until he hears instruction from God.

This indeed is the world of Gbadamosi Idris Wasiu, a Nigerian by birth, who arrived from Libreville, Gabon on a mission purportedly ordained by God.

One of his ‘neighbours’, a woman, confirmed to The Nation that they “initially suspected him to be one of those criminals that disguise as lunatics, and despised and maltreated him; not knowing that he is a man of God. Now we call him Daddy.”

    His story

According to the self-proclaimed Man of God, “My name is Gbadamosi Idris Wasiu but I have changed it to Elijah Akorede Oluwole. I am a native of Ejigbo-Ode Ibarapa in Osun state. I had my primary and secondary education in Ibadan. I was living in Libreville before coming here, but my wife, children and mother live in Lome. I lost my father several years ago.”

Back in Libreville, he said he got inspired while watching a pastor (name withheld) on TV. At about that time, a friend of his, Henry Obilo returned from Nigeria with some spiritual water from his church, out of which he drank, washed his face and slept off. In his sleep, he saw himself in the church, and God asked him go to the church in Nigeria and that he would be a prophet.

He thus obtained a visa, boarded a plane and landed in Nigeria on the 30th March 2013.

Continuing, he said “I went to the Church where I stayed for sometime in the guest house. When I could no longer pay the bill after incurring 21,000 naira, I was sent away by the man in charge of the guest house. Since then I have been staying in public places; while at night, I sleep in the church’s premises. I am not going back to the guest house again, as a voice keeps telling me to remain in the public place, calling people and praying for them.”

    Wonder shall not cease

At Ikotun BRT Bus terminus, where he stays from morning till evening, Elijah revives visitors who come to him for prayer. On one of his visits, the reporter witnessed the self-acclaimed pastor in gross discussion with three of his ‘clients,’ after which he prayed for them.

According to some of the BRT staff, who volunteered to speak with The Nation, the man (Elijah) is not mad. One of them said ”he has prayed for many people here and solved problems brought to him. Be it early in the morning or in the dead of the night, high calibre people come to him for prayers. If you tarry for a while, you’re likely to witness high profile people like chiefs, big people, prophets, men of God, market women, women in purdah and even kings, coming to beg him to pray for them. However, only very few who are bold enough come out publicly during the day.”

    Reject gifts

Curiously, the self-acclaimed ‘Man of God’ does not collect money from anyone, even when offered. He claims that is not his mission. This was attested to by some of his clients on ground during this interview, one of whom said somebody even promised to build him a church, which he also turned down.

Elijah explained that he is under God’s authority and not man’s. “I was at First Square Church and people always come to me to pray for them. The Lord sent me to be here in the public under His authority; others may be sent into the forest, the mountain and so on ….”

    Testimonies

A man who called himself Pastor Prince Adeyemo said of the man in question, “He (Elijah) used to pray for people and heal them, but his appearance is terrible. But that no longer surprises me.”

Engr. Peter Étugbe described Elijah as strange but said he is convinced that he is a man of God. “Most times when I’m going to my office at Ikotun bus stop, I always noticed how a lot of people cluster around him. Later, I was able to find out why. He said he has been sent by God to be like that, so I said the best I could do is to call the press to interview him. If he is God sent or fake, we will get to know soon.”

Etugbe spoke of a particular LAMATA staff who said she may never be able to repay or thank him enough for what he did for her. So the first thing she does on resuming everyday now is to go to him for prayer, adding that the said lady now calls him daddy.

Another woman – Ayo Akande (38) said, “I have been seeing him at the BRT pavilion since last year, but we did not know he’s a servant of God until a sick boy was brought to him half-dead and he prayed for him and the boy came alive. I am also a Messenger of God; I worship at Christ Apostolic Church. It was when I went spiritual that I realised that the man is serving punishment for refusing the call of God about four years ago. In fact I have given him my water to pray on when I arrived this morning.”

Akande also said she has always met people at the pavilion early in the morning, who have come for prayer. “Even this morning, I met four people here who came for prayer.”

Asked how sure she is of his prayer’s efficacy, she replied confidently that “He gave me a prayer point and asked me to bring water, which he prayed on, and after using it, my problem was solved. Meanwhile I had spent money on the same case only to discover that it had been taken to the pit of Devil. But they could not withstand this man of God. When I told my colleagues in the office, they were shocked. Even my boss brought some people here for prayer this morning. I can tell you that even the BRT pilots come to him for prayers. Another miracle he performed was when a young girl fainted and was brought to him. He prayed for her right in our presence and she came back to life.

Another witness, a woman said “He prayed for me and my sick child that used to faint, and she has not been sick, let alone faint since then. I’ve known him since last year March. Many people and servants of God do come here in the early hours; they say they don’t want to be seen. Even kings, chiefs and police officers do come here.”

She revealed that two women in veil only just left before this reporter’s arrival. “I wish you could come here between 5 am to 6 am and you will see a lot of people coming to him for prayer. He would tell you everything about yourself? My sister in Mowe said she has never seen this kind of thing before; that the prayer water I gave to her really worked, as her husband bought her a Jeep and her son who had been very sick was healed.”

Yet another woman, who had been listening to this conversations also volunteered that “All these market women you are seeing go to him for prayer,” while another said her son who was on medication has stopped taking medicine and is now well on account of his prayer.

Asked how long he would continue wearing the filthy clothes and going about unkempt, Elijah said “When God says it is time. It could be one week, one month; whenever He feels.”

In the mean time, the question remains, When will God release him?’

  • Three policemen, prophet held over alleged murder

Three policemen, prophet held over alleged murder

The death of a 20-year old man after an alleged torture by the police has landed three policemen and a prophet in trouble. JUDE ISIGUZO reports.

Three policemen attached to the ‘B’ Division Akure of the Ondo State Police Command and a popular prophet are currently been detained for the alleged murder of  Mohammed Oluwatobi Badmus (20).

The deceased was the only son of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a popular hotelier, Raheem Afolayemi Badmus.

Young Badmus was allegedly tortured to death by policemen on the orders of Prophet Bisi Adedugbagbe of the Celestial Church of God, who alleged that the deceased stole a phone belonging to a member of his church.

Late Badmus was allegedly dragged to the police station by the prophet on the allegation of breaking and stealing at his church.

The family is also alleging that the police are demanding for a sum of N150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand naira) to carry out an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death, a responsibility they claim ought to be borne by either the state our the suspects.

But the police are saying that since the family was alleging that their men killed the deceased, it was their responsibility to provide the funds for the autopsy to ascertain their claim.

The family had alleged that Adedugbagbe had ordered the policemen led by  one Corporal Adesola Awodeyi to torture late Badmus to confess to stealing a phone from his church.

It was gathered that Awodeyi and the other two policemen beat and tear gassed Badmus until he collapsed and became unconscious.

A family source said: “Once he became unconscious, the policemen at the station then hurriedly wanted him released to his family because they suspected he could die.

“Corporal Awodeyi and Prophet Bisi should be held responsible for the death of Badmus. He was tear-gassed at close range, after he had been beaten mercilessly at a mini-detention room in the station. The beating and torture with tear gas was to coerce Badmus to confess to stealing the phone.

“He refused to confess to the crime because he did not do it and he was battered as a result. Some of the other officers at the police station heard the scream of the boy. They advised Corporal Awodeyi and the other two officers to take it easy with the boy, but they refused.

“The prophet was present during the torture, but he showed no compassion for the boy. All he wanted was for the boy to confess to the crime of stealing a phone. He was urging the corporal to keep pummeling Badmus. The prophet was bragging that he would deal with Badmus unless he confessed and returned the phone he allegedly stole”.

A police source said “We have no legal record of the boy in our station now because they didn’t even ask him to write a statement. The statement should have been the first thing, but Corporal Awodeyo forgot to initiate that. Already he has put himself into trouble for that.

“We can’t deny the fact that he was brought here. He was actually here but we have no legal record backing up his presence.”

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the station had asked for Badmus’ statement as soon as he received a petition on his torture but none was produced.

Bakare Asani, a lawyer representing the Badmus family, in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, accused the police officers at the ‘B’ Division police station, Akure, of murdering Badmus.

The petition alleged that the deceased sustained internal injuries as a result of the gruesome torture by the police.

A medical report issued by a hospital said Badmus suffered serious internal injuries. The report added that the victim had inhaled a chemical that caused serious bodily damage.

“The boy was brought in here and he was breathing through the help of an oxygen mask and we attended to him immediately after they had collected a card,” said a staff at the hospital. He added that the deceased “had inhaled a heavy dose of the substance which had already damaged his brain and caused serious disorder in his system before he died.”

Father of the deceased Raheem Badmus said: “My son was hale and hearty before his untimely death. He came home to break the Ramadan fast with me during the week at my residence. I even spoke to him concerning some unholy behaviours of his during the fasting period and promised to deal with him, before he ran away from the house to his uncle’s place in Okuta Elerinla Estate.

“He was filled with life and expectations when we broke the fast together. Certainly, death was not one of the tasks of my only son, not even cheap death from the supposed law enforcement agents who tortured him with large dose of chemical substance, which he inhaled and later passed out.

“So -me of my friends that called him over the unfortunate incident found it difficult to break the news to me and it was later I was told what transpired on the day.

“The elder sister Oluwaseun told me that she was in the house when she was called by one of our neighbors who asked her to come to Danjuma Street where she was told that they wanted to see her because her brother (Tobi) had stolen a smart phone in a prophet’s church.

“Truly, they discovered such type of phone was in Tobi’s possession and they inquired how he managed to get the phone since he was never at the church.”

He added that Tobi was taken to the police station along with his uncle, Sola, and was tortured before being released, but that he died some hours later.

Oluwaseun, the late Badmus sister who was with him when the police came for him confirmed his arrest and torture at the police station. She said: “I was at home when some people close to prophet Bisi called me, that my younger brother, Tobi, had stolen a smart phone from his church. It was surprising, and I told him my brother can’t do such a thing. Immediately I called my mum’s uncle (brother Sola) where Tobi was staying to inquire about the allegation and if he saw any phone with Tobi and he confirmed he saw a phone with him and had already collected the phone”.

She explained that she told the clergyman that his uncle had confirmed finding such a phone with late Badmus and that she had called him on his phone to meet her at the prophet’s church.

She said that though the late Badmus agreed to meet with her at the church, the prophet was impatient and advised that they go and meet him wherever he was.

“On getting to Tobi’s place, it was argument all through between the two, with claims that the phone doesn’t belong to the prophet. The prophet now told us that he had already informed the police at B division Oke Aro about the matter. It was at that point, Tobi suggested we move down to the Police station, where he believed the matter would be resolved”.

She further stated that three police officers, led by a corporal with the name tag ‘Adesola Awodeyo’ held

several talks with the prophet at the front of the Police station before they arrested her late brother.

When they were dragging him away, she said she heard use of the term, ‘Baptismal Room,’ and believed that was where he was tutored.

“Close to an hour later, the prophet and the cohort (Policemen) with whom he carried out the plot came

out with my brother with his face swollen, vision blurred  and his eyes balls reddish and bulging and couldn’t compose himself while he can’t also stand on his legs”.

She alleged that instead of the policemen to take him back inside the station, he was handed over to them with directions that they go home, adding that they drove back home in the prophet’s vehicle amidst argument and anger over the maltreatment in the station.

She said when the prophet dropped them and departed, her brother’s condition worsened. He was crying, vomiting and holding his stomach and complaining of a headache.

“I picked my phone and called prophet Bisi who pleaded we take him (Tobi) to the hospital and that he

would join us there,” she said.

He was rushed to the State Specialist Hospital Akure, but that he could not be attended to because of

the ongoing strike of doctors, and later to Liberty Hospital in Oluwatuyi quarters also in Akure, where doctors directed them to their family hospital.

At Hope Land Hospital, Lafe junction in Akure, where Badmus died, a nurse who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “The boy was brought in here and he was breathing through the help of

oxygen and we attended to him immediately after they had collected a card. Report with us showed that he had inhaled a heavy dose of chemical substance which has already damaged his brain and caused a serious disorder in his body system before he died”.

Days after Tobi’s death, Oluwaseun said the police, in an effort to cover up the case called her to come over to the station to write a statement for the deceased because they had forgotten to get him to write one, but that she declined.

Spokesperson to the Ondo State Command, Oluwole Ogodo confirmed the incident. He said the deceased was brought to the station for stealing and that he confessed to it, adding that it was because he refused to return the other items that he took from the church that he was brought to the station.

The spokesperson said from investigation, the deceased was released by the police around 10am and developed ill health around 6pm. He said if he had indeed been tortured as his family was claiming there was no way he could have survived up till that time.

Ogodo said the three policemen and prophet linked to the murder of Badmus have been arrested and they are been detained, pending investigation.

On the issue of autopsy, he said it is the family’s responsibility to pay as they are the ones alleging and therefore should be able to go to any extent to prove it.
