Proprietor seeks govt support for sports

Proprietor of Mictec International Schools, Dr Michael Tejuoso, has appealed to the Lagos State government to support private schools to enhance sports development.

Tejuoso, who spoke at the 2nd combined inter-house sports competition of the Mictec Schools located in Ogudu and Oko-Oba, said the support could come in form of ease of getting land for schools and reduction of dues/taxes.

The proprietor said the school does not hold the sporting event yearly because of lack of space, which is hard to come by in Lagos as land is expensive.

“In Nigeria, particularly Lagos, we have not got the support from government.  You hardly see private schools that have sufficient space for sports.  We find it difficult to make this inter-house sports regularly because of lack of space.  They should follow the concept that education is a social service.  But annual dues for private schools go higher every year.  It is not so abroad where government gives support to schools to build a total child.  We are paying exorbitantly to use this government stadium.  There should be kind of duty-free facility for anything that has to do with education,” he said.

Tejuoso said the combination of the inter-house sports of the two branches of the school has fostered unity, cooperation and friendship among teachers, parents and pupils.

On his part, chairman of the occasion, My Ige Adetayo, urged the government to send representatives to inter-house sports competitions to sport talents who can serve the country in future.

Adetayo who was very impressed by the performances of the pupils, both in sports and various choreographic presentations, underscored the need for a talent management programme for them.

“These are the places they need to come to catch them young.  I like their assimilation.  I am amazed at what they have done.  If they can do this, it shows that their future is very bright,” he said.

At the end of the competition, Onyx House came first; Emerald, second; Jasper, third; and Beryl, fourth.

She said: “The school has the mandate to reduce, or if possible, totally eradicate illiteracy from the society, which is why we work as a team in compliance with the State Government Programme of Education, ‘Education for All’, by making our school fees affordable for all. We also provide educational materials for the less privileged and finance children from poor homes. We open school gates in order to close prison doors.”

Mrs Jesuleye said the name of the school, which used to be Excellent Child Academy prior to registration, was given to her in a vision in 2003. However the school did not start until 2010 with five pupils and two workers – herself and Mrs Agatha Ozazuwa.

Today, the school has 150 pupils and 10 teachers.

Her words: “I am happy that the school which was established on the firm foundation of excellence in all ramifications is already graduating from strength to strength. And hope to improve very soon on a secondary school level.”

The one-count charge stated: “That you Payne Babatunde on February 27, 2014 at day time at Adewale Kazeem house, Imowo along Ibadan Express Road, Ijebu Ode magisterial district did,  being a tenant in the above house occupying the first floor of the building, using it for Payne Group of School, conducted yourself in manner to cause breach of public peace by using dog and thugs to chase and threaten other tenants who were coming to rent the second and third floors and also lock the gate preventing both the landlord and prospective tenants to have a chance of inspection and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap 29, Vol. 1 Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”

  • Proprietor seeks support for education

Chief Learning Officer, Kith and Kin Educational Schools’, Kaoli Olusanya, has charged governments at all levels to collaborate with the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to fund education more adequately. He was speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Factor Magazine lecture which was delivered by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Governor of Osun State.

At the occasion held at the Ikorodu Town Hall last Thursday, Kaoli Olusanya, described the publisher of the magazine, a product of our public school system, whose uses, prose, style of writing, with clarity of thinking, analysis and presentation.

Olusanya emphasised the need for vigorous capacity building for teachers to equip them with professional skills required in the 21st century education. According to him, it is the available quality and quantity of our human resources that is key to developing Nigeria and not necessarily the quantity of bricks and mortar that is poured. He said calling for a state of emergency of the education sector may not be too much a remedy to address its decadence. Pretending to address the problem with the regular budgetary provision and regime of administration may be like postponing the evil day, Olusanya added.

He recommended that the government should take a cue from the Singapore take-off development approach under Lee Kuan Yew. Olusanya also advised youths to engage themselves in constructive enterprise as their contribution to building a virile nation.

  • Illegal varsity proprietor sentenced to five-year imprisonment

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has recorded a major feat in its fight against illegal universities.

Francis John Agbo, the proprietor of illegal Middle Belt University and North Central University, was convicted on a two-count charge of impersonation and forgery.

He was sentenced to five and a half years imprisonment without an option of fine by Mr Ali Tari Changbo of the Upper Area Court, Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Agbo was said to have posed as the Director of Research and Innovation of the NUC.

The convict also claimed to be a senior academic official of the Nasarawa State University, Lafia, and defrauded unsuspecting admission seekers.

A bulletin of the NUC made available to The Nation yesterday by the commission’s Chief Information Officer, Mrs. Bukola Olatunji, listed the evidence tendered before the court by the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aaron Zamani, a Legal Officer in NUC.

These include fake admission letters and fliers advertising the Nasarawa State University, Lafia; testimonies of witnesses, including victims; the accused’s claim of being the Coordinator of the university’s Nyanya Study Centre; tellers of a new generation bank as well as those of Aso Savings and Loans, Oturkpo branch, Benue State, bearing his name and that of his wife.

The prosecution tendered 12 exhibits and they were admitted by the court.

The accused had jumped bail granted him during trials on related charges at an Abuja High Court and the Chief Magistrate Court, Oturkpo, Benue State. This prompted the issuance of bench warrants against him.

The presiding Magistrate said the evidence against Agbo was glaring, including those by Blessing Peter, one of his victims.

Miss Peter said she met the accused at different locations, such as Nyanya Primary School, as he had no permanent address.

He had also failed to issue receipts to the victims for the payments they made to him.

Agbo was said to have collected between N8,500 and N45,000 for admission forms and school fees from his victims.

The evidence showed that more than N100,000 was extorted from four victims, who testified before the court.
