Ujah: I’ll prove myself against South Africa

After being a bit-part player for the Super Eagles over the last two years, Nigeria striker Anthony Ujah has said he hopes to prove his worth in Nigeria’s colours, ahead of the friendly against South Africa on Sunday.

The 24-year-old has been recalled to the Nigeria team and started in the shock 0-1 loss to Uganda on Wednesday in a friendly, and he says he is looking to get that first goal to boost his confidence.

“I want to show what I can do for my country and I probably need that first goal to boost my confidence,” he said.

The Cologne of Germany striker also speaks on why he has failed to replicate his club form for Nigeria, but admits he is trying to find his rhythm playing for the Super Eagles.

“When I get that one goal, I want to get more,” he said. “Club football is different from national team football but I am putting in my best and still trying to find my rhythm.

“I hope to get that success and even though it’s been long since I last played for this team, I never gave up and I kept working hard, because I know what it means to play for my country. But I just need that first goal because it will give me a lot of confidence.”

Amodu roars: I’ve nothing to prove

Super Eagles’  interim coach Amodu Shaibu has boasted that he has nothing to prove, as he gets set for yet another rescue mission for the African champions.

The 56-year-old is having his fourth stint with the Super Eagles and after a coaching career spanning over 30 years, he says he has nothing left to prove.

Nevetheless, Amodu admits that he will need everybody’s support to get the job done this time, which is to qualify Nigeria for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“I have seen it all in coaching and I have nothing to prove now.

“I have coached for over 30 years and you all have my track record; my dossier, you should be able to determine whether this is a suitable material for this job or not, I’m not one to show such pride.

“And I believe with all our hands on deck, we will be able to salvage the situation. It’s not for me alone, it’s for all of us and that’s the truth.

“And that is the way I’m going to approach this job for all of us, including the players,” he said.

Amodu qualified Nigeria for the 2002 and 2010 World Cups but never took the teams to any of those tournaments and has also told SL10.ng that he will not be disappointed if he doesn’t retain the job.

“I’m not bothered because I’m used to it, truly I’m not bothered,” he posited.

  • I have nothing to prove, says Ince

I have nothing to prove, says Ince

Tom Ince insists he does not have a point to prove as he prepares for a first full season in the Premier League with Hull City.

Liverpool youth product Ince joined Hull as a free agent earlier this month, following the expiration of his contract at Blackpool.

While the winger enjoyed a taste of the Premier League during a loan spell at Crystal Palace last term, he struggled to nail down a regular place in Tony Pulis’ resurgent team, making just five starts.

However, Ince does not believe a lack of action at Palace puts any additional pressure on him to succeed with his new club.

“I’ve not got anything to prove. I’ve been given a great opportunity to play again in the Premier League,” he said.

“I enjoyed my time at Palace last year, I didn’t play as much as I would have liked, but to have that experience and to come here now, I’ve got a good pre-season under my belt and I don’t feel like I’ve got to prove myself to anyone.”

Still only 22, Ince has the benefit of significant Championship experience, having initially left Liverpool to join third-tier side Notts County.

“I’ve worked hard to get where I am,” he added.

“I haven’t taken the route of playing academy football for that many years, I took a brave decision to go and play in League One, I played over 100 games in the Championship at Blackpool and to be where I am now, I’m privileged and it’s another step on the ladder to me.

“So no, I don’t feel like I’ve got to prove anything to anyone, I just have to work hard for my team-mates and try to help Hull City.”

  • Ekiti: ‘Statistics prove our popularity’

    Ekiti: ‘Statistics prove our popularity’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has described the opposition’s boast that it will unseat the APC in the June 21 governorship election as “a fairy tale.”

In a statement by its Publicity Director, Segun Dipe, APC said: “There are only two political groups in Ekiti State today. The first is the APC and the other is the Association of Confused Politicians.

“The boast by the opposition to dislodge the Dr. Kayode Fayemi administration in the coming election is a fairy tale. It is grossly unsupported by available statistics. Such high hopes by opposition parties to win the election, despite their noticeable shortcoming, is comparable with that of a patently lazy student, who never reads but is always announcing that he would make distinctions in his papers. This is what is referred to as dead on arrival.

“When the campaigns begin, those in the opposition will be boasting of what they will do, while the APC will be pointing at what Fayemi has done. He has built roads and empowered people. The social welfare package is there and he has developed tourism. He has created several opportunities for men and women. Women are particularly more enhanced. The aged are happy; the youths are happy; the working class is happy and everybody is praising Fayemi for his good work. Christian and Muslim clerics have made his performance the subject of their sermons.

“Those in the opposition are disorganised and disoriented. They are busy searching for the right candidate among the many jostlers, while we have the most marketable candidate in the incumbent governor.

“They are seeking power and support from strange gods in Abuja and elsewhere, while we look up to God and the people to re-enact our winning ways. They trust in horses and chariots while we trust in God and the people. They are beating the drums of war while we are beating that of peace.”

On its membership registration, the party said: “Within the first few days of the exercise, about 300,000 people registered and we are still counting. These are people with faces and home addresses. This figure is exclusive of the apolitical and the statute-barred, such as civil servants. It is dominated by the aged and artisans, who value the good work of Dr. Fayemi. Pitting this figure against the total voting population, one could see that APC members are in the overwhelming majority and they will make their votes count for the party.

“Outsiders should keep their distance from the Ekiti election and allow the people to elect the person they love. Anything contrary may return the people to the dark days of seven years, seven governors.

“Ekiti people are conscious of their past in the hands of ignoble politicians and will not want to return to their Egypt, having experienced life in the Promised Land. They have showed their love for the party of their choice by registering as members. They have felt the weight of water and that of oil and they now know which is heavier.”

  • Mimiko to Amaechi: Prove that I voted in NGF poll

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has  urged Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi  to substantiate his claim that he (Mimiko) voted at the disputed  Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF) election.

Mimiko said he should produce  the video evidence  of the claim, saying  Amaechi  cannot take ecclesiastic refuge for  his anti-democratic  dispositions.

Reacting to Amaechi’s claim that  he voted at the election, Mimiko  said  Amaechi should not hide under religion to cover up his anti-democratic posture.

He insisted  that  nothing stops  Governor Amaechi  from proving to the world that he  voted  by using the same video he has been using to tell the public that there was an election.

“If Amaechi is saying I voted at the election, then I think he should prove it to the whole world that I did.

“I sincerely believe that a process must have led to the declaration of result contained in their few minutes video clip. That later part can’t come in isolation; I challenge him to show the entire  proceedings including where I voted”.

Mimiko, who is the Vice Chairman of the Jonah Jang- led NGF faction.said “Amaechi should tell the world whether or not he presided over his own  election despite cries that he should step aside for an interim chairman to preside over the same election as it is the practice in any

    democratic setting.

‘’He should also tell the world whether or not he was the sole provider of ballot papers and the ballot box used  for the charade where he is also a contestant.”He should tell the world why he insisted he must contest for another term even when he knew that negates the norm in the Forum.

“It is the height of treachery  for the governor to  have installed  secret  video camera to record his colleagues without their consent simply because  he is  acting  the script of  another agenda inimical to the  progress of the Forum.Mimiko said the development is not acceptable and undemocratic stressing that ‘’it is the height of desperation, it won’t work because  Nigerians can no longer afford to be fooled
