    BREAKING: FG declares Dec 25, 26, Jan 1 public holidays

     The Federal Government on Monday, declared Dec. 25; Dec. 26 and Jan. 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark the Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations.

    The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the announcement in a statement by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, in Abuja.

    Tunji-Ojo extended warm seasons greetings to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, as well as to Nigerians generally.

    He urged christians to reflect on the virtues of love, peace, humility and sacrifices exemplified by the birth of Jesus Christ, describing the values as essential for national unity, tolerance and harmony.

    The minister also enjoined all Nigerians to use the festive season to pray for the peace, security and continued progress of the country, while supporting government efforts at national development and cohesion.

    “The Christmas season and the New Year presents an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and renew our collective commitment to nation-building,” he said.

    Tunji-Ojo also enjoined citizens to remain law-abiding, security conscious and moderate in their celebrations, while cooperating with security agencies to ensure a peaceful festive period.

    He wished all Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

    BREAKING: FG declares December 25, 26, and January 1 public holidays

    The Federal Government has declared Wednesday 25th, Thursday 26th December 2024, and Wednesday 1st January, 2025 as Public Holidays to celebrate Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year respectively.

    The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.

    The Minister in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani extended warm greetings to all Nigerians.

    He called on Nigerians to use the festive period to reflect on the values of love, peace, and unity that the season signifies. 

    Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasised the importance of the season as a time to foster harmony and strengthen bonds across families and communities.

    The Minister also called on Nigerians to remain committed to the peace, unity and progress of the nation for national development.

    “The Christmas season is a good moment for both spiritual reflection and national renewal. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, let us demonstrate kindness and extend goodwill to one another, irrespective of our differences,”  Dr. Tunji-Ojo said. 

    He assured citizens of the government continued commitment to ensuring peace, security, and prosperity across the nation.

    While wishing Nigerians a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2025, the Minister expressed his confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration ushering in the new year, a better and prosperous economy that will be the envy of the world.

  • Easter: Fed Govt declares Friday, Monday public holidays

    The Federal Government has declared Friday, April 19 and Monday, April 22 public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.

    The Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd), announced the holidays on behalf of the Federal Government.

    The minister enjoined Christians to emulate the exemplary attributes of Jesus Christ among, which are tolerance, love and peaceful co-existence.

    A statement by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah, said the minister urged Nigerians at home and abroad to use the occasion to pray for the peace, unity and progress of the country, irrespective of diversity in religious beliefs.

    Dambazau wished Nigerians a happy and peaceful Easter celebration.

    He urged them to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in its determination to take the country to the Next Level.

    The Federal Government has declared Tuesday 25th,  Wednesday  26th  December 2018 and Tuesday Jan. 1, 2019, as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations respectively.

    Minister of Interior, Lt. General (Retd.) Abdulrahman Dambazau made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

    According to the statement signed by Mr Mohammed Manga, Director of Press of the ministry,the minister enjoined Christian faithful and all Nigerians to use the period to pray earnestly for progress and development of Nigeria.

    He called on Nigerians to strengthen their resolve to maintain peace and unity in the country before, during and after the 2019 general elections, in the spirit of the season.

    Dambazau further urged all Nigerians, “both at home and abroad, to support the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in its determination and sustained efforts towards a peaceful,united and virile nation.”

    He wished Nigerians happy Christmas and New Year celebrations. (NAN)

     

  • Tinubu to Fed Govt: declare public holidays for collection of PVCs

    THE senator representing Lagos Central District, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has urged the Federal Government to declare public holidays for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), ahead of the December 2018 deadline.

    Senator Oluremi, in a statement in Lagos, identified PVCs as the tools to participating in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

    She also urged residents in the state to ensure that they collect their PVCs.

    The call sequel to revelations by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that over seven million PVCs were yet to be collected nationwide, with 1, 400,000 from Lagos State.

    Prior to the 2015 elections, INEC introduced the use of smart card readers. This has necessitated issuance of PVCs as part of the identification and authentication process.

    After the 2015 elections, about 12 million PVCs had remained in the electoral body’s custody.

    She said: “With previous elections, Nigerians developed voter apathy due to a distrust of the system. The 2015 elections taught us, however, that as individuals, our votes count. Thus, we must rise up as citizens to fulfill our civic responsibility and ensure accountability in governance.”

    Ahead of the forthcoming elections, INEC had released modalities for ongoing continuous voter registration. The centres open from 9 am to 3 pm daily.

    Mrs. Tinubu pleaded that the period should be extended; and should include weekends to allow those who were unable to visit the centres during work hours to do so at weekends.

    She said INEC should ensure that it had adequate resources to make the process quick and easy.

    The senator called for increased voter education and sensitisation to achieve the desire results

    Easter celebration: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

    The Federal Government, (FG) has declared Friday 14th and Monday 17th April, 2017 as public holidays to mark the Good Friday and Easter celebrations.
    The Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, (rtd) who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, enjoined Christians and Nigerians in general to extend the spiritual benefits of Easter, which are love, peace, justice, sacrifice and kindness to their daily living, and through this contribute to unity and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.
    Accoding to a statement issued by the Director Overseeing the Office of the  Permanent Secretary (DOOPS), Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido, the minister further urged Nigerians to co-operate and join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari, in his sustained efforts to build a strong and virile nation.
    Dambazau wished all Nigerians a Happy Easter Celebration.

    Fed Govt declares today, tomorrow public holidays to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr

    The Federal Government has declared today and tomorrow as public holidays to mark the Eid el-Fitr celebration following the non-sighting of the moon on Monday.

    Minister of Interior Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau made the declaration yesterday in a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Bassey Akpanyung.

    He said the declaration became necessary following the directive by the President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, that the Ramadan fast would continue on Tuesday as a result of the non-sighting of the moon.

    The minister urged Nigerians to use the period for sober reflection and ensure harmony, unity and peaceful co-existence.

    He called for support to the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in his effort to pursue socio-economic and political growth of the nation.

    The minister wished Nigerians a peaceful celebration.

    The Federal Government earlier declared Tuesday and today as public holidays.

    The Federal Government has declared Friday, March 25 and Monday, March 28 as public holidays to mark the Good Friday and Easter celebrations.

    He asked Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace and unity across the nation.

    THE Federal Government has declared December 24, 25 and 28 as public holidays to mark Maulud Nabiy, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

    Minister of the Interior Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) made the announcement yesterday in Abuja in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bassey Akpanyung.

    “The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 24th December, 2015 as public holiday to mark Eid-El-Maulud celebration.

    “Friday, 25th and Monday 28th December, have also been declared as public holidays to mark Christmas and Boxing Day celebration,” the statement said.

    The minister enjoined Muslim and Christian faithful to use the occasion to  pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria.

    He also advised Nigerians to cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari in his efforts to build a peaceful, united and virile nation.

    Dambazau wished the citizens happy celebrations.

    Eid-Maulud is the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammed in Islam. Christmas is celebrated by Christians to mark the birth of Jesus Christ.

    “The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 24th December, 2015 as public holiday to mark Eid-El-Maulud celebration.

    “Friday, 25th and Monday 28th December, 2015 have also been declared as public holidays to mark Christmas and Boxing Day celebration,” the statement said.

    The minister enjoined Muslim and Christian faithful to use the unique occasion to‎ pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria.
