The Lagos State Government in partnership with WaterAid and private operators are set to construct 350 public toilets across the state to curb open defecation and promote hygiene
Speaking at a media roundtable, Special Adviser on Environment to Lagos State Governor, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu said work has begun, with site identification underway.
He highlighted the state’s three-pronged approach including infrastructure development, advocacy, and enforcement to ensure proper toilet usage.
He added that the government is discouraging borehole drilling and prioritising potable water supply through the Lagos Water Corporation.

“We are moving away from borehole dependency. Soon, Adiyan Water Works will generate 100 million gallons of pipe-borne water daily,” he said.
Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Mahamood Adegbite, stressed that water provision by the state is not for profit but must be sustainable.
He warned against illegal water tapping and assured ongoing discussions on tariff structures.
Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji, reiterated the government’s commitment to rehabilitating waterworks across Lagos to enhance supply.
State Programme Lead, WaterAid Lagos, Dr. Adebayo Alao, highlighted WaterAid’s role in strengthening WASH governance.
He revealed that Kimberly-Clark has donated $1 million (2021–2025) to improve hygiene among 45,000 vulnerable residents in Ojodu and Ikorodu North.
Other achievements include renovating two Primary Health Centres in Ogba and Odo-Nla, providing medical equipment worth over N30 million, and supporting the ongoing rehabilitation of Akilo Water Works.
