  • Pupils win Spelling Bee contest

    TWO pupils Bolaji Ayomide and Busari Idris have emerged winners in the Agbado Ijaiye local council Spelling Bee Competition.

    The event, which held at Meiran Model College Meiran, Lagos, drew competitors from the 19 public schools, (11 junior and eight seniors) in the council.

    The wife of the council’s Chairman, Mrs Janet Arogundade, who chaired the ocassion, said the Spelling Bee competition, a baby of the New Era Foundation, a pet programme of the wife of former Lagos State Governor, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is organised yearly in all the 57 councils in the state; winners at the councils’ level will flex muscles with their counterparts at the grand finale.

    Represented by her Special Assistant, Mrs E.O. Ogunjale, Mrs Arogundade stressed that many talented pupils have emerged through the programme, making the Lagos State Ministry of Education to adopt it as an annual exercise. She added that the programme encourages students’ reading habit and healthy academic rivalry.

    Arogundade, implored contestants to make the council proud by winning the trophy at the grand finale so that the Agbado/Oke-Odo council will produce the next ‘One day Governor’.

    Bolaji, an 11-year-old pupil of Alimosho Primary School, Alaguntan, said “My joy was undiluted seeing myself as the winner of the 2014 Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA’s spelling Bee competition, despite that this is my first time to partake in such programme.

    Similarly, Busari Idris, of Meiran Community Senior High School, vowed to work harder with his colleague.

    The council’s Supervisor for Education, Felix Lomuwa-Fanegan said he was hopeful of a better performance from the duo.

     

  • Extra coaching for pupils in Ekiti

    Pupils in upper primary schools owned by the Ekiti State government are to enjoy extra coaching in three core subjects ____of English language, Mathematics and Basic Science; ____it was learnt at the weekend.

    This is part of efforts to raise teaching and learning standard in the all-important subjects, the local chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) said in a memo.

    In the memo sent to the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof Modupe Adelabu, the NUT said the decision to introduce extra lessons for the pupils was taken in conjunction with the Association of Primary School Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON).

    Mr. J. Ola Idris, who signed the memo as the Principal Secretary of Ekiti NUT, said the lessons would be held three times weekly between 2 and 3 p.m., beginning from this second term.

    The memo reads in part: “This latest effort of the union is to collaborate with stakeholders to raise the standard of education in the state.

    “We hope that the board will provide the necessary support to the programme.

    Corps member trains pupils

    No fewer than 50 students of Community Secondary School in Bakassi, Cross River State, have been trained as debaters by the Action Volunteers under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) MDGs Advocacy Programme.

    The students were tutored by Johnpaul Nnamdi, a MDGs volunteer. The training, which lasted for 10 weeks, exposed the participants to the eight objectives of the Millennium Development Goals and their role in achieving the goals in their community.

    Johnpaul said the programme was promoting education in the community, saying that it was important to train young people on the MDGs goals.

    The event was attended by Chairman of Bakassi Local Government Council, who was represented by Mr Thomas Iyang, NYSC Area Inspector Pastor Philomena Umoh, his assistant, Mr Samuel EJojim, and Principal of the school, Mr. Bassy Asuquo.

    Highlight of the event included the launch of the school farm which was established by the corps member. Johnpaul said agriculture played a key role in the economic development of every nation. “I decided to establish this farm to allow students reap the benefits of agriculture and appreciate its capacity to eradicate hunger and poverty. We will monitor it and the proceeds accruing from our investments will be used to implement students-orientated programmes,” he stated.

    Dana de-worms 3,000 pupils

    To make pupils healthy, Dana Drugs Limited has de-wormed over 3,000 school children of Barikin Sale Primary School, Barikin Sale, Minna, Niger State.

    The gesture, according to the team leader, Godwin Ediagbonya, is to make the pupils healthy and avoid running stomachs during the course of their studies.

    Ediagbonya said the exercise was done in partnership with the state Ministry of Health and Hospital Services on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) programme.

    It was carried out by the wife of the Niger State Governor, Hajia Jumai Babangida Aliyu.

    She urged parents to always de-worm their wards to keep them healthy. Also speaking, Mr Gift Osiomwan, said Niger was the third to host to the firm’s state tour on de-worming.

    “Niger State played host as the third state on the series of the nationwide de-worming of school children by Dana Drugs Limited as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts,” he said.

    He said the firm will continue in its efforts at ensuring that pupils across the country are de-wormed.

  • School rewards pupils

    The pupils of Al-Wasi Secondary School, Mushin in Lagos State, have been rewarded for their outstanding academic performances and moral behaviours in the last academic session.

    They received the various prizes and awards at the fifth Prize-Giving of the school held on its premises.

    The Guest Speaker and National Public Relations Officer, League of Muslim Schools Proprietors (LEAMSP), Mr AbdulFatai AbdulRaheem in his keynote address titled: The best legacy, described education as the best legacy, said education is not complete until a child has moral, physical, western and religious education.

    AbdulRaheem, who noted that western education has brought a lot of civilisation to the society, urged the pupils to be focused and determined to make positive impact in the society through their knowledge.

    “The students should always look at what is in front of them. They should focus on what they are going to achieve tomorrow. Students should not have education for reading alone but to make landmark in the world by imparting in the society,” he said.

    Earlier, the Acting Principal of the school, Mr. Wasiu Taiwo, said the school has recorded many academic achievements in the last few years.

    He said the aim of the school is to build great future leaders, advising them to be dedicated to their studies and prepare well for their future.

    “To our esteemed students, the future is for the serious-minded and focused ones. Please be more dedicated to your studies. You must build yourselves for tomorrow. The challenges ahead of you are higher than the ones we faced during our time. Our SS3 students must work hard to perform well in their coming SSCE examinations,” he said.

    The best overall pupil, Sulaiman Hikmat, expressed her happiness and promised to improve on her performance.

    “I am happy. I strongly believe with prayer and dedication, one can make it. I believe I still need to read more and improve on my academic performance,” she said.

    Pupils win scholarship, laptop

    Three public school pupils in Lagos State have distinguished themselves in the Tola Olukilede Speech Competition, winning scholarship awards and gifts.

    They impressed the panel of judges made up of seasoned educationists and experts with their oratory skills at the competition, which featured 300 pupils from 30 schools in the six education districts of the state.

    The judges, Pastor E.O Omotayo, Mr Taiwo Orioloye, Pastor Kola Joseph Olorunwa, Mrs Grace Deh and Mr Daniel Ajumobi were entertained by the brilliant dissection of national issues by the pupils.

    At the end of the competition, it was Oni Damilare of Ajangbadi Senior High School, Ojo, from Education District who impressed the most and was rewarded with a laptop and a scholarship award of N300, 000, for three years.

    Runners up, Adepeju Fatiu Muhamadu of Eko Akete Senior Grammar School (Education District III) and Kalu Daniel of Buriel Avenue Senior School (Education District IV) won laptop and printer. The schools and education districts of the trio were also rewarded with trophies and plaques.

    Commenting on the relevance of the speech competition, the initiator and Coordinating Pastor of Heal the World Mission, a non-denominational Christian Charity organisation, Dr Tola Olukilede, said it was aimed at stimulating the intellectual capacity of the pupils.

    “The Tola Olukilede Speech Competition/Scholarship Scheme is to develop our young people with the mindset and skills needed for the achievement of their personal vision and leadership skills,” he said.

    Olukilede, who attributed the socio-political and economic crises that have bedeviled the nation to bad leadership hoped that the competition would help groom good leaders.

    “It is against this background that it has become imperative to raise another generation of future leaders that would go the whole hog to bring changes to all the aspects of national life and to secure a better future for the nation and its citizenry. To get the right people, we need to go to schools where we can sample out intellectuals among the youth through intellectual programmes, harness them and empower them with good education and prepare them for leadership challenges and responsibilities,” he said.

    The event, which doubled as a prefects’ summit, afforded the participants the opportunity of learning from professionals from various walks of life, including a representative of Prof Pat Utomi, Mr Essien Ubong; and the Lagos State Education Commissioner, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, who was represented by Mr Babatunde Omibeku, as special guest of honour.

    The pupils were trained on how to develop their mindsets as well as the appropriate skills needed to achieve their personal visions and leadership skills, with the hope that it would translate to nation building.

    In her speech, the commissioner said the event was a right step in the right direction that would help the young people channel their skills and potentials in the right perspectives.

  • Pupils urged to show character

    Christian pupils attending public primary schools in the six education districts of Lagos State have been advised to uphold good virtues.

    They were counselled during the 2013 interactive forum for Christian pupils organised by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

    Pastor Olusola Tijani, a staff member of SUBEB, described the manger (birth place of Jesus Christ) as a symbol of humility which Christians should have.

    Tijani advised the pupils to love, be humble and always be identified with good characters and abstain from conducts that do not glorify him.

    The pupils from all the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) competed in carols, drama and quiz, which was won by Ifako Ijaye LGEA .

     

  • Islamic pupils battle for honours

    It was a gathering of Islamic clerics, political associates and others at the fifth Annual Quranic Competition of Toyyibat Islamic Foundation (TOIF).

    Ninety-six contestants read from the Holy Quran during the competition.

    They were divided into two groups. Group A had 57 contestants between ages seven and 12, while Group B had 39 contestants from 12 and above.

    Among the contestants were children from the Arewa and Yoruba tribes, all from different Islamic and Arabic centres who were required to recite a part of the Quran off hand and also read a portion from the holy book.

    In Group A, Rufai Ubaida from Ardu Salam Islamiyat, Agege Mosque came first followed by Sani Khadijat from Darul Quran Kareem, Agege Mosque in the second position, and Apatira Sulaiman from The Home School, Ipaja Mosque, third.

    Ardu Salam Islamiyat, Agege Mosque produced the winner in Group B as well as Abu Bakr Mariam Abdullah Adam from Darul Quran Kareem, Agege Mosque and Sani Muhammadu Salis from Modirasatu Ansarul Islamiyat Mosque to the seconda and third positions.

    The winner in the Group A got a trophy and N30, 000, while the runners up won N20, 000 and N10, 000.

    In Group B, the overall best won a trophy and N40, 000, while the second and third placed got N30, 000 and N20, 000. The leaders of each contestant also received prizes.

    After the prize presentation, Islamic clerics prayed for Agege Local Government, Lagos State and Nigeria.

    Present were the Chairman, Mosan Okunola Local Council Development Area, Hon. Abiodun Mafe and his Itire Ikate Local Government Area counterpart, Hon. Akeem Bamgbola, among others.

    Scholarship for pupils

    AYouth Corps member serving in Cross River State, Kalu Amarachi, has awarded scholarship to two pupils of Salvation Army Secondary School in Calabar as part of her personal Community Development Service (CDS) projects.

    The recipients, Joy Asuquo and Daniel Eyang, got the awards after emerging overall best in their classes. The scholarship would cover their tuition throughout their primary education.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, Amarachi, a graduate of Anambra State University (ANSU) said the event was organised to fulfill one of the Millenium Deveopment Goals (MDGs), which encourages universal basic education , adding that the gesture was aimed at reducing the burden on parents.

    “I conducted an MDGs NEEDS assessment in the school and discovered that about 30 percent of the pupils were orphans and lack adequate financial resources to cater for their learning needs. Hence. I decided to take up the challenge of funding their primary education through this award of scholarship,” she stated.

    Other projects executed by the corps member during the event included the donation of MDGs branded notebooks and noodles to pupils. She also taught the kids proper handwashing skills.

    She said the projects were successful because of her partnership with telecommunications giant, Globacom, Ene Akojom Foundation, Junior Chamber International (JCI), among others.

    Headmistress of the school, Mrs Odo Bassey, thanked the corps member for the gesture.

  • Pupils march against HIV/AIDS

    PUPILS in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State have walked in Abua community campaigning for an HIV/AIDS free generation.

    The children bore placards to demonstrate their hatred for the killer disease.

    Twelve-year-old Godspower Agbebi, who led the walk, said they were mobilised by the Edogh Abuan Development Association to march to create awareness on the dangers of HIV/AIDS in the state and Nigeria.

    He said he became unhappy when he discovered that HIV/AIDS has resulted in the death of many children and vowed that they would do everything possible to ensure an AIDS-free generation.

    The Coordinator of the walks, Dr. George Matthew Ela, who is also the President of Edogh Abuan Development Association, said his group mobilised the children to create awareness about the disease with the hope of preventing its spread.

    He said theme of this year’s street walk is: Shared responsibility, strengthening result for an AIDS Free Generation, adding that it is time to work toward zero discrimination, zero infection and zero AIDS- related death.

    He said: “Children are the most endangered species of the killer disease; that is why we mobilise them to demonstrate their hatred for the killer disease. To achieve free AIDS generation, both the children and the adults must join hands to ensure that we achieve our goal.

    “We also use the opportunity to conduct free HIV/AIDS test to the children and adults in the community. We started in the community; the next awareness campaign will be in Port Harcourt,” he added.
