    A non-governmental social club, Hope of Tomorrow, has donated school items and food to pupils of five government Primary Schools in Bariga Local Government.

    The schools are, Temple Primary School, Bariga Primary School, Alubarika Primary School, Abule-ayo Primary School and Shomolu Local Government Nursery and Primary School.

    The club’s President, Ademola Adewuyi, said the gesture was to give back to the community.

    According to him “Bariga is well known for violence, but today’s gesture to the student’s shows that something good can come out of Bariga. There are good and responsible people in Bariga and this group comprises of youths who grew up in Bariga; we all attended different government schools while growing up, we are done with tertiary institution and decided to give back to where we emerged from.”

    He promised Bariga to expect more from the group, saying plans are ongoing to make the gesture an annual event which promises to reach out to the old and young ones to offer free health care, sensitization on drug and cultism among others.

    He called on government to partner with them by sponsoring some of their programs.

    Representative of Oba Timson Badiru Jagunmolu of Bariga Shomolu, Kann-Jones Njoku, urged the pupils to embrace and be proud of their culture, adding that they must respect each other’s ethnic group.

    He applauded the club for the gesture.

    Divisional Police Officer, Ilaje Police Station, Titilayo Ayomide, represented by Inspector Raji Wakili urged the pupils to study hard and be punctual in all they do.

    He advised them not to make bad friends, noting that crime does not pay. “Be helpful to your parents because you are the future of tomorrow.”

    Head teacher of Alubarika primary school Mrs. Oyegunle Esther, thanked the club, describing the gesture as good intentions for pupils in Bariga.

  • Pupils urged to use zebra crossing

    The Badagry Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fatai Adesina Bakare, has urged motorists to slow down at the sight of a zebra crossing.

    He said zebra crossing is an area of road painted with broad white stripes, where vehicles must stop if pedestrians wish to cross.

    According to him, the zebra crossing gives right of way to pedestrians.

    Bakare spoke through the Command’s Head of Operation, Chief Route Commander Osas Edith, at the construction of zebra crossing and enlightenment on how to use it, at the Badagry Grammar School, Lagos.

    He said zebra crossing keeps pedestrians together where they can be seen by motorists, and where they can cross safely across the flow of vehicular traffic.

    According to him, any motorist who knocks down a pedestrian at a zebra crossing is at fault and liable for prosecution, according to traffic laws.

    He advised pupils and other pedestrians to always use zebra crossing and walk by the shoulders of the road where they would be facing oncoming vehicles.

    The Commander sought for more synergy and collaboration with military and paramilitary groups, which would make the Corps achieve its mandate of making the highway safe.

    ‘Quiz contests grow pupils’ intellect’

    Managing Director of PZ Cussons Consumer, Mr. Alex Goma, has described quiz contests as strong tool for intellectual development and improvement of education quality.

    Goma spoke at the grand finale of the yearly PZ Cussons Chemistry challenge at the MUSON Centre in  Lagos.

    No sooner had the quizmaster declared the event open than the six finalists locked horns in a fierce challenge for the coveted prize. Intermittently, the quizmaster would admonish contestants to relax as the contest was not a war.

    Having become winners in their groups at the preliminary stages of the contest, who then would be the ultimate champion among the six contestants seemed to be the next puzzle?

    After hours of intense suspense, an SS II student of New Hall International School in Lekki, Dara Ogunmola, was declared the overall winner of Chemistry Challenge, scoring 90 per cent in practical test and 100 per cent in the quiz sessions.

    Dara was rewarded with N700,000  cash, a brand-new laptop, a trophy and gold medal. His Chemistry teacher, Mr Raphael Adeoye, was presented with N100,000 cash and a plaque. His school also got N100,000 worth of laboratory equipment.

    Samuel Oyelami of Tomia Community Senior Secondary School in Alagbado, who scored 88.50 per cent and came second, was presented with a cash of N450, 000, a new laptop and silver medal. His Chemistry teacher, Mr Bowale  Oludare, went home with N80,000 cash and a plaque, while his school got N80,000 worth of laboratory equipment.

    With a cumulative score of 88 per cent, Justine Anyika of Federal Government College in Ijanikin, Lagos, finished as second runner-up and received N350,000 cash, a laptop and bronze medal. Justine’s Chemistry teacher, Adedamola Ibunkunola, got N70,000, while her school received N70,000 worth of laboratory equipment.

    The third runner-up, Adepoju Adewale of Fountain Height School in Lagos, received N250,000 cash, a laptop and a consolation medal. His Chemistry teacher was presented with N60,000 cash reward and a plaque, while his school received N60,000 worth of laboratory equipment. Other finalists were also rewarded with cash and laboratory equipment.

    Some science teachers in the audience were picked to participate in teachers’ challenge. At the end of the contest, Mr John Nnani of Top Grade  Secondary School came tops, winning N70,000 and PZ Cussons products; same went for runners up who were also rewarded with cash and products.

    Goma recalled that the Chemistry Challenge was created by the PZ Cussons Foundation in 2011,  as its corporate  social responsibility (CSR) arm of PZ Cussons, to reward excellence among teachers and pupils.

    He said: “We created this initiative to massively motivate pupils and their teachers to aim for excellence, and also appreciate the importance of science to our everyday life. We brought in two quality brands, Premier Cool and Nunu Milk, to do the physical and emotional connections needed to consolidate the impact of this project. This edition has been a great improvement on the past ones.”

    The Permanent Secretary, Lagos Ministry of Education, Mr Adesina Odeyemi, reiterated government’s support for the initiative, praising PZ Cussons Foundation and the supporting brands for contributing to the development of science education in the state.

    National President of Chartered Institute of Chemist of Nigeria, Prof Oladele Osibanjo, who also chaired the Advisory Board of the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge, said the initiative would create academic opportunities for winners and motivate students to study Chemistry.

    He said: “Nigeria is abundantly blessed in human capital. If students can put up great skills at national competitions, such as the Chemistry Challenge, I have no doubt they would compete and excel anywhere in the world.”

    The overall winner, Dara, praised the organisers. “The quiz did not only challenge my intelligence from the preliminary stages, it has also created a lasting experience which I will never forget in life,”Dara said.

    This year’s edition of the Challenge with the theme: Be a winner, began with over 3,000 participants at the first stage. The second round had 130 pupils that qualified from the first round. They were taken through multiple answer examination, which led to pruning them to 24. Following the practical test for the 24 contestants, six finalists emerged to compete for the star prize.

    Breaking news: Gunmen abduct six pupils in Lagos

    Gunmen suspected to be militants have attacked Igbo-Nla Model College, Epe and kidnapped six children.

    This is the second time since October last year that kidnappers have invaded the school.

    In the earlier incident, gunmen cladding in military camouflages entered the school premises from a hole at the back gate and whisked away pupils and teachers.

    Although details of the latest kidnap are still sketchy, it was gathered that security forces have been deployed to comb surrounding bushes for the children.

  • Anambra, professionals hold quiz competition for pupils

    THE League of Anambra Professionals (LAP) and the state government are set to hold a school quiz competition for SS2 students, as part of fresh investment in education.

    Highest winner will go home with N100,000 as well as certificate of excellence in competition holding across the state. Various cash prizes are for other winners.

    Announcing this in his office in Lagos, LAP President Willy Nzewi said the competition will start in a written quiz at both the local government area and the state levels and end in an oral televised quiz.

    The local government area level competition takes place on Tuesday May 23, 2017 and the state level holds on Wednesday May 31, 2017, he further said.

    In his contribution, the chairman of the group’s education, research, doctrine and publication committee, Prof. C.U. Ezeigbo said the subject areas of the quiz are English Language, Igbo Language & Culture, ICT and Mathematics.

    Ezeigbo added that each school in Anambra State will send its best two students to the local government area level competition. Then each council will send its best three best students to the state level and the best six students at the state level will proceed to an oral televised quiz.

    The LAP school quiz expert confirmed that first prize will get N100,000, the second prize is N50,000 naira and the third prize is N30,000 – in addition to three consolation prizes of N5,000.

    On the cash prizes at the council level, he said the first winner will smile home with N12,000 as well as a certificate of merit, adding that the second and third winners will get N8,000 and N5,000 plus certificates of merit.

    Nzewi said the first and only LAP school quiz competition held in 2008, expressing happiness that it is back and brighter nine years later.

    According to him, “the 2017 competition is billed as the battle of the minds to emphasise its objectives among which are to promote and stimulate education as an enabler of economic advantage towards the transformation of Anambra State into a richer and safer society.”

    Nzewi, a renowned chartered accountant and business adviser, added that the group, through the school quiz competition, is also drawing the attention of privileged Ndi Anambra to the need to invest in education and the opportunities that lie in coming together to pursue development in their home state in partnership with government at every level.

  • Tension as pupils, teachers await Cowbellpedia results

    Pupils who participated in the 2017 Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics Qualifying Examination are already waiting for the Thursday, June 1st, date for the release of their results. Teachers and management of various schools that presented students are equally looking forward to a successful outing for their candidates.

    A cross section of pupils, who sat for the examination in March expressed optimism about the outcome as they look forward to their results on the online portal: www.cowbellpedia.ng

    A junior secondary pupil of Pakoto High School, Ifo, Ogun State, and first time participant, Kehinde Hassan, recalled how his initial tension during the examination eventually gave way to confidence. His counterpart from Jacobs High School, Owode, Ogun State, Johnson Oluwole, is also sure of advancing to the second round. “I have tried my best, and I am praying, my family is praying too. I just hope for the best,” Oluwole said

    Oluwatoyin Ayodele, one of the teachers at the Pakoto Examination centre, is also certain that his pupils will cruise to the next stage. “I have no doubt at all. My students have prepared very well and my wish for them is to get to the finals and win the ultimate prize,” he said.

    A total of 51,018 candidates sat for this year’s Stage one of the 2017 Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematics TV Quiz Show.

    Further analysis shows a total of 26,057 and 24, 961 candidates in the JSS and SSS respectively.

    Also the number of online candidates’ registration soared from 19,604 to 32,096 in 2017, amounting to a 64 per cent growth over last year.

    Aside the figures, the percentage of online registration to total registration increased from 43 per cent in 2016 to 63 per cent in the current edition.

    Candidates are advised to visit www.cowbellpedia.ng for the Stage One result from June 1st, 2017 as 108 candidates (54 each for junior and senior categories) are to proceed to the Stage Two, which is the Television Quiz show.

    The second stage, will be further sub-divided into preliminary, semifinals and finals. The show will be serialised into 13 episodes and aired on major television stations across the country.

    The ultimate prize for this year’s edition is N1 million and an all-expense paid excursion outside the country, while the 1st and 2nd runners up will go home with N750,000.00 and N500,000.00 respectively.

    Similarly, the teacher of the star winner will get N400, 000.00.  Teachers of first and second runners up, will go home with N300, 000.00 and N200, 000.00.

  • Council boss lifts pupils

    The Sole Administrator of Agbado/Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Shola Akande, has distributed exercise books and school bags, to pupils of 23 public elementary schools in the council area.

    The items were handed over to the Education Secretary of Alimosho Local Education Authority, Mrs Alirat Alamu, for onward distribution to pupils.

    The gesture was part of activities marking his 299 days in office.

    The council boss also presented certificates to graduates of skills acquisition programme  funded by his administration.

    The occasion also witnessed a free medical check and distribution of drugs to people.

    Akande said the initiatives were part of ”the need to give the dividends of democracy to the residents for their unflinching support for his administration and the All Progressives’ Congress (APC).

    ”We have been able to provide educational materials to meet the needs of our children in all the 23 primary schools in the area. We are here to present them with school bags and exercise books. This gesture would go a long way in assisting both parents and pupils in their educational needs.

    ”We have trained over 160 women and youths on various skills and arts such as soap making, bead making, catering services, fashion designing, among others.”

    Mrs Alamu thanked the council chief for the gesture, urging him to address other  challenges in the educational environment.’

  • UBA mentors pupils, donates books

    Pupils of Gateway Secondary School, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, have received tips on how to manage their pocket money and other gifts, courtesy of the United Bank for Africa (UBA)

    The bank advised participants to embrace financial literacy and imbibe the discipline of saving a fraction of their pocket money as foundation to a secured and independent life in future.

    UBA’s Executive Director, (Lagos and West) Mr. Ayoku Liadi, gave the advice at the 2017 edition of Financial Literacy Day, which the bank marked with the pupils of the Gateway Secondary School, Abeokuta.

    Liadi said if the children  learnt to save a fraction rather than waste all on transient pleasures, they would be able to support their education should their parents or guardians default in meeting their education needs in future.

    He advised them to take clues from successful indigenous business men and women such as Tony Elemelu, Aliko Dangote and Folorunso Alakija, who started early in life to save their small earnings as well as re-invested same before they became wealthy.

    “Financial literacy is quite important to pupils. How I wish I had this kind of opportunity to listen to a lecture like this while I was in the secondary school,” Liadi said.

  • Pupils advised on career choices

    PUPILs have been urged to choose their career based on passion.

    Proprietor of Kiddies’ Acres Nursery and Primary School, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, Mrs Titilade Olajumoke, said this during the school’s ‘Career Day’.

    The event saw participating pupils clothed in various attires emblematic of their professionals such as medical doctor, lawyer, nurse, pilot, teacher, banker and engineer.

    Olajumoke said the talk was geared towards enlightening the pupil for their future career.

    As part of activities on their calendar year, Olajumoke said last year, the pupils visited the Republic of Benin airport in Cotonou for their excursion. She said the pupils were aslo unable to travel outside the country for the past last two year because of the economic situation of the country.

    An ex-banker Mrs Deborah Fabiyi spoke about the responsibilities, benefits and challenges of a banker.

    “We have to be at work before 8am to meet the requests of customers and we close late at night.” she said.

    A banker also needs to dress appropriately, must be welcoming and not be overwhelmed with pressure.

    She urged pupils to ensure they pass their entrance examinations, identifying key subjects in studying Accountancy such as Mathematics, English, and Accounting.

    An air traffic controller at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos Mrs Balogun Olubunmi, admonished the pupils to be the best in whatever they do.

    “As a pilot, you cannot afford to make a mistake on your job because any mistake may lead to loss of lives.   I am always in the Control Room to monitor aeroplanes. If there is need to visit a rest room or any other thing, the control reader must be properly handed over to another staff member.”

    Mrs Ngi Senewo, an instructor and a dancer, said dance enhances health.
