  • How States stand in PVCs collection

    …Lagos, Kano top list

     

    Ahead of Saturday’s general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has released full list of Permanent Voter Cards collected with Lagos State topping the list.

    According to the list, 5,531,389 people collected PVCs in Lagos State, while 4,696,747 registered voters in Kano State collected their PVCs.

    In Kaduna State, 3,648,831 persons picked up their PVCs followed closely by Katsina State with 3,187,988 million cards collected. Rivers State rounds up the top five with 2,833,101 PVCs collected.

    In terms of percentage of registered voters that collected PVCs, Lagos is not in the top 10 with 84.19 percent of the 6,570,291 registered voters in the state collecting their PVCs. 1,038,902 million voters (the highest for any state) did not collect PVCs in Lagos State.

    According to INEC statistics, Katsina State has the highest percentage of PVCs collected with 98.69 percent of registered voters in the state collecting their PVCs.

    It was followed by Taraba State with 97.30 percent of registered voters getting their PVCs, while 95.76 percent of Nigerians registered to vote in Gombe collected their cards.

    Kebbi State and Bauchi State followed with 95.13 and 94.84 percent of registered voters getting their PVCs in both states, respectively.

  • INEC extends deadline for PVCs collection till Monday

    Registered voters now have up to Monday to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday extended the collection period by three days, including today and tomorrow.

    In addition, card collection can be made up to 6pm everyday as against the normal 4pm, according to  INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

    Yakubu said the commission was ready for the polls which are taking off next Saturday with the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

    He PVCs that are not collected by Monday would be recalled and deposited at the CBN until after the elections.

    All state offices of INEC were directed to “review the procedure for the collection of PVCs and dedicate all the staff of the local government offices to the collection process.”

    The commission reassured Nigerians that it would  ”continue to take every necessary step to ensure that no registered voter is disenfranchised on account of non-collection of PVCs. Similarly, the commission is taking urgent steps to address complaints of the unavailability of the PVCs of some registered voters before the end the deadline for the collection.”

  • Breaking: INEC extends collection of PVCs

    The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has extended the collection date of the Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) till Monday 11th.

    Announcing the extension, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu also said the staff will be at their duty post even at the weekend to ensure that all registered voters get their PVCs.

    Besides, he said the time of collection has also been extended till 6 pm.

    The commission has also directed that all staff across the country be deployed for the purpose.

    He also said that uncollected PVCs after the extended date will be recalled and deposited at the CBN till after the general elections.

    Meanwhile, the management of INEC is in a closed door meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to review activities for the February Presidential and National Assembly polls scheduled for next Saturday, 16th February, 2019.

  • Beauty queen, ex Commissioner sensitise youths, women on PVCs collection

    Youths have been urged to collect their Permanent Voter Cards to enable them vote for candidates of their choice in the forth coming general elections.

    A beauty queen, Miss Ukeme James, who is the reigning 2014/2015 Face of Culture South South stated this in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State while on a sensitisation campaign for beauty queens and youths from the South South geo political zone.

    According to the Uyo born beauty queen, the youths who are a greater percentage of Nigeria’s population and whose future to a large extent depends on the success and outcome of the 2015 general elections must be in the vanguard in sensitising the electorate on the importance of exercising their franchise.

    Her words: “The future of our beloved country lies on the successful conduct of this year’s elections. That is why I am appealing to all queens in the Southsouth and the youths to go out and get their PVCs so as to be able to vote for candidates of their choice according to the dictate of their conscience.”

    She advised the youths not to allow themselves to be used by desperate politicians as tools or agents of destruction but to ensure that the elections are peaceful.

    The reigning beauty queen admonished the youths to be advocates of peace, tolerance, love and peaceful coexistence in the country and  called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do all in her power towards giving the country an election that will be free, fair and credible on line with the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

    Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Education and Women Affairs in Akwa Ibom state and Chairman Board of Trustees of Success Award Organization, Mrs. Eunice Thomas, advised women to take the forthcoming elections seriously and ensure they collect their PVCs to enable them vote for candidates of their choice.

    Mrs. Thomas admonished Akwa Ibom women to vote for only candidates who value the role of women in nation building and governance and advised against the selling of the PVCs.

    She commended INEC for extending the date for the collection of the PVCs, noting with delight that the extension will afford more women who could not collect theirs and who could have been disenfranchised to have the cards and exercise their civic responsibility.

    Her words: “The strategic role of women in the development of our country cannot be ignored and the role of women in helping to deepen our democracy and electoral process cannot be taken for granted. That is why I am calling on all women to see the general election as a vital step towards securing the future of Nigeria for themselves and generations yet unborn.”
