Nigerian held for six weeks in Qatar cries for FG’s help

A Nigerian, Gideon Eze, detained for six weeks in Doha, Qatar’s capital city, has cried out to the Federal Government and its relevant agencies to intervene in his case to reverse the injustice done to him.

Eze’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong said Eze had boarded Qatar Airways’ flight from Abuja to the United States on May 7, 2025 but had his trip aborted in Doha due to a profiling and mistreatment incident that resulted from a routine airport security check.

Effiong said during the check, security officials claimed to have found items they suspected to be illicit drugs, but which turned out to be false alarm after being subjected to series of tests.

He said the tests included chemical swabs, machine analysis and tongue-tasting as well as “two complete searches of my checked luggage and a full strip-search,” adding that “every single test result was negative for narcotics,”

Eze, who spoke alongside his lawyer, said despite the clear evidence of his innocence, the Qatari security personnel escalated the situation.

He added: “I was detained, my passport and phone seized and my checked luggage forcibly removed from the aircraft and searched twice. Nothing illegal was found.

“I was handcuffed behind my back, driven in a black vehicle, and taken to a detention facility called Duhaill, under the pretext of a ‘final test’ that would take just two hours.

“At the detention centre, I was subjected to a degrading strip search. I was stripped completely naked, ordered to jump, squat, and cough, while a device passed around my genitals and anus. Again, nothing incriminating was found on me.

“I was detained and compelled to sign a report written entirely in Arabic, which falsely declared the harmless stones were ‘cocaine stones. That was how I spent six weeks in detention.

“I later learnt through the Nigerian embassy in Qatar they had sent the stones for forensic lab analyses during my detention. The analyses surprisingly took six weeks, after which the results came out, still showing the stones were benign and non-narcotics.

“I was ultimately released from custody without any charge or conviction on June 19th, 2025, confirming the complete lack of evidence or legal basis for the original accusation and detention,” he said.

Eze added that days after his release, he found that his U.S. visa was revoked on May 12, 2025 due to his wrongful arrest at the Hammad International Airport, Doha.

He added, “Since I had obtained my U.S. visa as my wife’s dependent, her student visa also got revoked in relation to the case. This even came at a time when she was preparing for her Ph.D. candidacy exam, adding more fuel to the fire already ravaging our lives.”

Eze said that since then, he has made several attempts, both personally and through the Nigerian embassy in Qatar, to obtain case dismissal documents and a copy of the forensic lab results, as key materials that would help him to appeal the visa revocation.

He said that although the Qatari Public Prosecution Department eventually issued a case dismissal document to him, the organisation failed to release the laboratory report.

Eze noted that the many appeal letters he wrote to the US embassy have been unanswered and prayed that the Nigerian government would come to his aid.

Nigeria, Qatar deepen ties to combat drug trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Qatar have strengthened their partnership in combating illicit drug trafficking with the symbolic exchange of instruments of ratification between both countries.

The exchange was conducted yesterday in Abuja by the NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, and the Ambassador of Qatar to Nigeria, Ali Bin Ghanem Al-Hajri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the development followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 3, 2024, in Doha, between President Bola Tinubu and the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.

The agreement focused on cooperation in combating illicit trade in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their precursors.

Marwa, in his remarks, commended the existing partnership between both nations, describing it as a joint commitment to tackling a major global threat to public health and security.

He assured that the NDLEA would continue to collaborate closely with its Qatari counterpart to protect the people and countries from the threat of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

According to him, the agency in the past four years has intercepted over 1,000 kg of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, and other illicit substances destined for Qatar.

Diamonds and Pearls Travel Company is determined to position Qatar as a prime destination for Nigerian travellers. To achieve this, the travel company is using the innovative approach of experiences and story-telling rather than logistics.

According to the co-founders Mrs. Wonuola Olatunde-Lamidi and Mr. David Olatunde-David, Qatar offers a balance of modernity and tradition that appeals to a wide range of Nigerian travellers. “From budget to luxury travellers, there is something for everyone. Tinubu hails Kaduna’s peace model as Kaduna, Qatar donate houses to victims of banditry

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Kaduna State’s peace-building approach as a model for the nation, as the state government and Qatar Charity Sanabil Project commissioned the first phase of 50 housing units for families displaced by banditry.

Speaking through the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, during the commissioning ceremony in Kaduna, President Tinubu applauded the collaborative effort that also includes a school, clinic, and shopping complex as part of a broader 500-housing-unit intervention by the Qatar Charity Foundation.

“This is not just a ceremony; it is a reaffirmation of hope and humanity. What is happening here today touches the core of President Tinubu’s vision—rebuilding lives through dignity, not just rhetoric,” Ribadu said on behalf of the President.

The President noted that Kaduna’s evolution from a hotspot of insecurity to a more stable and hopeful environment is the result of “intelligence-led, community-driven, and compassion-rooted governance.”

He praised Governor Uba Sani for steering Kaduna “from despair to stability,” and assured that the federal government is proud to work in partnership with the state on both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in the fight against insecurity.

“Kaduna is safe today. We can testify to that. The tears are drying, the wounds are healing. You are restoring trust, not just houses,” Tinubu added.

He further announced that the federal government is scaling up its support to states like Kaduna by reinforcing local peace-building efforts, enhancing intelligence gathering at the grassroots, and delivering social investment programmes aimed at preventing future violence.

President Tinubu also reassured displaced families and victims of insecurity that his administration is fully committed to deploying both “hard and soft power” in securing their future and rebuilding their lives.

“Your scars may not vanish, but your resilience will define your future. Kaduna’s story is no longer one of tragedy, but of triumph through collaboration and compassion,” Tinubu said.

Governor Uba Sani, in his speech, described the moment as the most consequential of his public life, saying the project goes beyond infrastructure to restore dignity and humanity.

According to the governor, “This is about telling every widow, orphan and displaced soul that they are not forgotten. We are doing this because peace without dignity is incomplete. Safety without healing is hollow.”

Governor Sani commended Qatar Charity Foundation for building what he called “trust through compassion” and thanked donor Aisha bint Khalfan for fully funding the project.

He added that, beyond housing, the Phase 1 intervention also included distribution of tricycles, grinding machines, cargo bikes, salon kits and welding equipment to empower widows and jobless youth in the affected communities.

“This is a people-first model. It speaks not just to recovery but resilience. Let this not just be a moment of applause, but a call to action,” Governor Sani added.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, also present at the event, said the Qatar Sanabil Project demonstrated the transformative power of partnerships between governments and humanitarian organisations.

“This is more than shelter. We are restoring hope. We are empowering the powerless and proving that compassion is a valid governance tool,” he said.

He praised President Tinubu for prioritising security, job creation and social inclusion, and pledged continued legislative support to scale similar projects nationwide.

“As a son of Kaduna, this project holds special meaning for me. I’ve witnessed the pain. Now, I’m proud to witness the healing,” the Speaker added.

Country Director of Qatar Charity, Hamdi Abdul, said the initiative reflects the foundation’s commitment to dignified living, self-reliance and long-term sustainability for the displaced.

“A safe home is the foundation of a dignified life. We are grateful to President Tinubu, Governor Uba Sani and the people of Kaduna for the partnership and trust,” he said.

He disclosed that a second phase of the project will soon begin, alongside a 100-day food distribution campaign across all 23 local government areas of Kaduna State.

Some of the beneficiaries selected from various communities across the frontline local government areas, were emotional, while expressing gratitude to the Kaduna State Government and the Qatar Charity Foundation for wiping their tears after losing their loved one to banditry.

Qatar summons Iranian ambassador over missile attack

The Qatari Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said it has summoned the Iranian ambassador in Doha to reiterate its condemnation of Iran’s targeting of a military base in the Gulf country.

On Monday evening, Iran carried out a retaliatory missile attack on the U.S. military’s al-Udeid base in Qatar, which came days after the U.S. struck three key nuclear sites in Iran in support of Israel.

Qatar told the ambassador that this violation is inconsistent with the principle of good neighbourliness and the close relations between Qatar and Iran, as Qatar has always been an advocate of dialogue with Iran and has made strenuous diplomatic efforts in this regard, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, Doha said it sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council, informing the members and UN chief António Guterres of the extremely dangerous escalation, which poses a direct threat to regional peace and security.

Qatar also urged the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities and take urgent measures to impose an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire throughout the Middle East to prevent the region from sliding into further dangerous escalation.

The al-Udeid base, which normally hosts around 10,000 soldiers and civilian personnel according to reports, had been previously evacuated.

Qatar re-opened its airspace after closing it shortly before the attacks.

Bahrain and Kuwait also closed their airspace as a precautionary measure, but reopened it a short time later.

Iran launches attack on U.S. Air Bases in Qatar, Iraq

Iran said yesterday it has launched an attack on United States (U.S.) forces stationed at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and another in Iraq.

Al Jazeera, which is based in Qatar, also reported spotting missiles in the skies over the Gulf emirate, which is home to the U.S airbase of Al-Udeid and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

Tehran gave advance notice to Qatari officials that it was launching attacks on U.S. bases in the country, reports The New York Times.

According to the Times, Al Udeid Air Base, the forward headquarters of U.S. Central command, has 10,000 military and civilian personnel.

Qatari government official Majed al-Ansari, in a statement, condemned the attacks.

A senior White House official speaking on condition of anonymity about the sensitive issue said the White House and Department of Defence were closely monitoring potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

The attacks came after the U.S. Embassy in Qatar told Americans to shelter in a  place until further notice. Qatar also temporarily closed its airspace after the U.S. attacks on Iran over the weekend.

“The competent Qatari authorities announce the temporary suspension of air traffic in the country’s airspace to ensure the safety of citizens, residents and visitors,” Qatar’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement said it would “not hesitate to take all necessary preventive measures within this context.”

President Donald Trump had warned Iran against retaliation several times following U.S. strikes against Tehran’s nuclear facilities on Saturday night.

President Trump yesterday met with his national security team in the Situation Room and, at the time of filing this report, did not yet responded to Iran’s retaliatory attack.

In his address to the nation on Saturday night, Trump cautioned Tehran not to hit back.

“Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier,” Trump said.

“There will be either peace, or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days,” Trump said, referencing the aerial strikes exchanged between Israel and Iran in the days leading up to U.S. involvement.

“Remember, there are many targets left,” Trump added. “Tonight’s was the most difficult of them all, by far, and perhaps the most lethal. But if peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Most of them can be taken out in a matter of minutes.”

Trump appeared to suggest on Sunday that “regime change” may be necessary in Iran to “make Iran great again”.

The 47th president’s comments in a Sunday statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to ‘make Iran great again’, why wouldn’t there be a regime change??? MIGA!!!”
