Nigerian music industry not protective of women – Qing Madi

Singer Qing Madi has spoken out against the challenges faced by women in the Nigerian music industry, describing it as unconducive and lacking adequate protection for female artists.

Speaking on the Wahala Podcast, she said women in the industry contend with unequal expectations, double standards, and limited support, often having to work twice as hard as their male counterparts to gain recognition.

Qing Madi added that female artists are frequently subjected to unfair criticism while also facing societal pressures that attempt to “box” them and restrict their creative freedom.

Despite the obstacles, she expressed pride in being a female artist in Nigeria, noting that it takes resilience and determination to thrive in the male-dominated industry.

Qing Madi said, “I think the [music] industry is not the best for women in terms of protecting women, loving women in general.

“Women have to do twice as much work as their male counterparts. Women are oftentimes criticised for nothing. But they don’t do that to the men. The men have the right to do whatever they like, but for the women, society just wants to box women so much.

“I go through that, which is crazy because I’m 19. So what do you want me to do? Women never get a break. So I’m super proud of being a female artist in Nigeria. And I’m super proud of every female artist in Nigeria because it takes a lot (to be one). It’s not easy.”

Rising star Qing Madi has opened up on the difficulty in the music scene after gaining stardom at a young age.

From navigating complex contracts to dealing with greedy professionals, Qing Madi, in an interview on LagosMeetsLondon podcast, describes the industry as “dark.”

According to her, she longs for a simpler life, free from the pressures of the spotlight, where she can focus on her music and personal relationships.

She added that her mother helps keep her grounded, reminding her of her responsibilities and humanity.

Qing Madi confessed to feeling like she’s “just winging it,” highlighting the uncertainty and creative burnout that can come with pursuing a career in music.

She said: “Literally had, I’ve had so many contract issues,  so many issues with like professionals in the industry where it’s just like, I just wanna go to school.  I don’t wanna have to read so many contracts.  I don’t wanna have to read.

“There are people that are just out for themselves and are so greedy and they just wanna take advantage of you. The industry is dark.  And because I’ve seen that firsthand,  it’s like I came into the industry accidentally.

“I just wanted to write music and get money and go to school and be fine. But people started relating to my music and I put out more. But some people’s motive is not the purest.

“So it’s gonna affect how you work as a creative. And I think also my mom, she tries to also remind me I’m a kid  in the most insane ways by asking me to do house chores just so I know like, yo, you’re still a human being,  like relax. Yeah, you’re still here.

“Because sometimes it doesn’t even feel human. Sometimes it’s just like you’re a machine  and everyone’s just got papers looking at you  trying to figure out like,  and I’m like, can I, please, I wanna go home. And it’s like you really don’t get enough time to be human or be someone’s daughter  or someone’s last kid.
So I think it’s just really messed up.  I don’t know if I’m ready.  It’s crazy, but I’m just like winging it right now”.

Singer Qing Madi has been selected as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Artist for January 2025.

This recognition comes after her previous feature on Spotify’s EQUAL playlist and her impressive ranking as one of the most-streamed female artists in Nigeria for 2024.

Qing Madi’s music career is driven by her passion to touch lives through her work.

Nigerian singer, dancer and songwriter, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma aka Qing Madi, has opened up on how she copes with fame and being a role model.

In a recent chat, the songstress says she tries to be herself despite fame.

“Obviously I’ve always been very human. I’ve never really thought about it on a representation level. I do know, subconsciously, I am representing. If I do something out of my own country, if I go to another country to do stuff, Nigerians are very supportive people; they’re always like, “That’s my girl”. I always get support from home. But I subconsciously try to be myself, and my people love it regardless. I’m very blessed and very privileged to be where I am, and have people look at me, and count me amongst a lot of amazing women. I love this and I love my craft, but it’s more about Madi and what I can be as a person, rather than where I am.”

Qing Madi my alter ego, not my real self – Qing Madi

Singer Qing Madi, whose real name is Chimamanda Chukwuma, has shared a candid insight into her contrasting public and private personas.

On the ‘Is This Seat Taken’ podcast, Qing Madi revealed that her confident on-stage persona is a far cry from her introverted and quieter self.

The 18-year-old singer confessed that performing makes her nervous, as it requires her to adopt a more confident alter ego.

She emphasised that this persona is different from her true self, who is more reserved and book-loving.

Chinasa asked, “Would you say that there are any differences between Amanda and Qing Madi?”

“I think so in terms of performance and confidence,” she began, “because the people that know me from my home know that I don’t like to talk at all. I have a mini library in my room right now so I’m just like, ‘books, books, books’ and I just bury myself and chill.

“Everything that has to do with coming out makes me nervous. But then, when it’s like, ‘You have to be Qing Madi now’ and I have to come on stage, my mum is like, ‘Who is that?’ I come on stage and I’m jumping, talking to the crowd and they’re responding, and I’m like, ‘Okay, this is a whole alter ego’. I think Qing Madi is a very confident person but that’s not who I am,” she stated.

Qing Madi also spoke about passion for classical ballet, which she sometimes incorporates into her music.

She shared fond memories of her ballet days, crediting the discipline with helping her build confidence and flexibility.

“I enjoyed it even more than music at some point. It’s one thing to suffer and it’s another thing for your friend to suffer with you. I loved it. I loved how I and my friends would cry from backaches; those memories of dancing in the church were beautiful. I loved ballet and I feel like it was a huge part of who I was. I love that it takes a lot of discipline. It’s not something just anybody can do, so it’s like a bragging right.

“Ballet helped with my confidence when performing on stage; it helped with my flexibility, obviously and it was my safe place. It still is,” she said.
