  • After the storm of quit notice(s)

SIR: Truly, Nigeria does not yield to dull moments. A coalition of northern youths made a proof of this about two weeks ago, issuing a quit notice to the Igbo in northern Nigeria with explained reasons. Any one among the northern youths could easily be dismissed on a straight encounter, but the import of the quit notice they served the Igbos, with the month of October as deadline hit Nigeria and the international community like a thunderbolt. The country has since been on edge.

From 1960, date of the nation’s independence till now, Nigeria has been battling with unanswered questions trailing the 1914 amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates by Lord Lugard. Efforts made to address the questions through constitutional conferences failed repeatedly. Nigeria slipped into difficult eras occasioned by the military interventions, a civil war that raged for three years, the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election results by the military, countless and yet severe homicide misfortunes caused by communal clashes, inter-ethnic and religious wars, insurgency at the instance of Boko Haram and above all, political and economic instability.

It is apt to note that Nigeria has survived many trials and tribulations, just as it has mastered the art of welding its broken parts with uncommon sense of bonding and compromise. It is not by happenstance that despite all daunting challenges, Nigeria continues to trudge on, pulling behind it, 57 years of nationhood while still commanding attention in the comity of nations.

Over the past one week, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has been holding meetings with top political stakeholders, leaders of thought including traditional rulers on how to further cement Nigeria. The steps he took in this direction have amounted to a plebiscite through which Nigerians spoke with one voice and voted to remain one under a united Nigeria.

So far, the Acting President had held separate consultative meetings with regional leaders including religious and traditional heads from key geo-political zones, capping it up with an enlarged meeting with representatives of each of the regions put together. His message was loud and clear, dropping a hint that the government would not hesitate to wield the stick to suppress the growing influence of promoters of hate and ethnic division in the country.

From indications, frayed nerves are calm in Nigeria at the moment. It is a testament to the workability of dialogue and consensus in resolution of crises and conflicts. The Acting President, indeed, was able to assuage the rough situation. There is no mistaking his calmness and positive body language in the onerous task of returning normalcy to the country after stiff moments of heckles and storm. Osinbajo counted on wisdom and ability to apply correct and soothing words to attain results. Somehow, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is the ultimate gainer.

I’m pleading with the voters to do this for Hayatou by returning him to the office through the ballot box.”

  • I intend to quit music in 2020, says Mr Eazi

I intend to quit music in 2020, says Mr Eazi

Mr Eazi who recently featured on local Nigerian TV show, Street Hop, has revealed that he will be quitting music soon; stating that he sees his singing career as a short term goal.

“Sincerely, I don’t plan on doing music for more than three years further,” he said.

“In my mind I feel like I want to do something more like a Jay Z. The music is giving me a lot of capital which can be reinvested, the music is giving me a lot of influence, and so if in the next three years I’m able to get the numbers, you could use that to do anything else in life.

“I am a serial entrepreneur. So, I will move on to the next thing depending on what I am passionate about at the time. It would appear that the artist is on a journey to ‘find’ himself admitting that he has walked away from several career paths from engineering to events.”

The artiste who is working on a mixtape titled, ‘Life Is Eazi: Accra 2 Lagos’, is also set to host some fans to a show on February 11, 2017, titled ‘69 with Eazi’ where only 69 fans would get a first listen to ‘Accra 2 Lagos’ as Mr Eazi and an acoustic guitarist performs the mixtape which will also be released that day.

The show which is to be hosted by DJ Cuppy, according to the organisers is Mr Eazi’s way of saying a huge thank you to fans for their consistent support on his musical journey so far.

  • Justice Oloyede must quit

    Justice Oloyede must quit

FIR: For a serving judge to write a petition straight to the House of Assembly for the impeachment of her state governor when she ought to know where to send petitions of perceived wrongdoing for investigation and ought to know the constitutional procedure for impeachment, to say the least, is  a clear indication that the said judge was motivated by personal malice and spite.

The judge, – Justice Folahanmi Oloyede, called the Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, a spendthrift and alleged “cruel and harsh debasement of pensioners and civil servants in deliberately and maliciously withholding their salaries for months on end…” and that “there is nothing on the ground in Osun to indicate or justify (the) huge gargantuan quantum of loan” the governor took to build infrastructure in the state. She said the governor was “guilty of unjustified assassination of the character of a sitting president and of moral murder” – an obvious reference to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

How can she prove that the salaries and pensions of workers were deliberately and maliciously withheld? How can she prove that “there is nothing on the ground in Osun to indicate or justify (the) huge gargantuan quantum of loan” the governor took to build infrastructure when she has not listed what is on the ground first for us to compare and justify?

The lady is the one who has a case to answer. She has already adjudged herself  ‘guilty of unjustified assassination of the character of a sitting governor and of moral murder’ by the very content of her allegation against the governor. If her allegations against the governor are enough to impeach the governor, then she must answer for committing the same offence of “unjustified assassination of the character of a sitting governor and of moral murder”; this is enough to remove her from office. I call on her to resign honourably from the judiciary of which I am a part of and go into politics.

I call on the governor’s supporters not to attack her physically in any manner in and out of office, as was done by the supporters of one of the P.D.P governors in a neighbouring state. With time the governor, if he is good to his people, will triumph over the lady permanently. She will triumph neither as a judge nor as a politician.

Ogbulafor tells PDP NWC members to quit

A former Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, has called on the members of its National Working Committee (NWC) to resign voluntarily.

Ogbulafor, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia yesterday, said the members should take the path of honour by bowing out of the committee.

He added that the members should resign in the interest of the party and pave the way for fresh hands to pull the party out of the woods and reposition it ahead of the 2019 general elections.

He described the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, and the Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, as a welcome development.

‘’I feel happy about their resignation because I feel they did so in the interest of the party.

‘’So, I feel it is better for all the committee members to voluntarily resign if they love the party and want it to survive,’’ he said.

Ogbulafor urged the committee to accept responsibility for the party’s woeful performance in the 2015 general elections and the failure to deliver President Goodluck Jonathan for a second tenure.

‘’The party played the politics of hate and exclusion,’’ he said, adding that ‘’past national chairmen were completely excluded and were never invited to offer our own ideas on how to deliver Jonathan.

‘’When I was the chairman, I controlled 28 states and a majority in the National Assembly and also won additional four states for the party.

‘’Some of us performed better and have good ideas on how to keep PDP in power for as long as I predicted,’’ he said.

Ogbulafor, who predicted that the party would rule Nigeria for uninterrupted 60 years, said that the feat was possible had the party sustained the line-up.

‘’I made the prediction in clear conscience and realisation that it was achievable, given that PDP controlled 28 states, majority in the National Assembly and local government administration.

‘’So, there is nothing that could have stopped PDP, if we were able to control the line-up.’’

Ogbulafor blamed the woes befalling the party on the emergence of a ‘’reform group,’’ saying that the group created factions within it.

  • I’ve not quit music, says MI

I’ve not quit music, says MI

For some time now, Loopy Records honcho, Jude Abaga, aka MI, has been absent from the music scene, fuelling rumours that he was done with music.

However, in a recent interview, the award-winning rapper revealed the reason for his absence and why he hadn’t released an album for a long time.

According to him, certain changes that occurred within his label were responsible for the break.

Chairman is a song I released last year. The following day after its release, a couple of changes started happening in the label. First was my brother, Jesse Jagz, who wanted to leave, but I didn’t know about it. We discussed it and I understood where he was going with that. But it just sort of changed the dynamic of the label. Usually, when you are producing music and relying on people, you might need some time to reassess and come back, when that changes. So, I was supposed to put out my album last year, but it was a good opportunity for me to reassess,” he said.

He further explained that after putting out Chairman, different opportunities came up, which kept him busy throughout last year. “I was travelling all over the place and didn’t have time to record. But this year, we made a conscious decision with my management that I am not going to do anything until this album is done.

“I released this ambiguous statement that I’m done. I’m sorry. I just wanted to get their attention. You see, the election season is around the corner and I wanted to put out these images that will tell young people before they start advertising to you to vote rightly,” he added.

And this will bring succor to Kwambe, who rejected the peanuts offered by Vancouver Whitecaps.

Because of the salary cap in Major League Soccer, the Canadian team had offered the Super Eagle around the same amount he was earning at Sunshine Stars.

Onyeudo set to quit Gombe United

Bishop Onyeudo is almost certain to dump Gombe United during the Globacom Premier League’s mid-seaon transfer, a close ally of the striker has revealed.

The goal poacher has been a revelation for Gombe United this season having scored seven goals already this term but the Imo-born player will leave the Desert Scorpions because of their failure to pay him his entitlements since the beginning of the season.

The source further said that the financial constraint in the Gombe team has hindered the players from putting up their best and that the motivation level has been low.

The source also noted that the problem within the team has started taking its toll on Onyeudo hence his decision to call it quits with Gombe United for a more ambitious side.

“Bishop (Onyeudo) will leave Gombe United by God’s grace during the mid-season transfer after the club’s failure to pay him his dues. He has been helping the club since the beginning of the season but he has not been seeing the money to the tune of his hard work. He will go to a place where his quality will be better appreciated and valued,” the source said.

It would be recalled that Gombe United head coach, Maurice Cooreman recently complained about the lack of goals from Onyeudo after the striker’s last goal during the Week 12 home clash against Kwara United which ended 1-0.

The striker has scored 7 goals and he is only behind Sunshine Stars’ forward Dele Olourundare who has netted nine goals this season.

  • Issa’s designer quits label

    Issa’s designer quits label

ISSA’s designer Daniella Helayel, who catapulted to international fame when Kate Middleton wore one of her trademark jersey dresses to the royal engagement announcement in 2010, has left the label she founded. According to WWD, her parting was not entirely amicable: She reportedly wasn’t getting along with majority shareholder Camilla Al Fayed (daughter of former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed) who acquired 51 per cent of the company two years ago with the intention of expanding the label worldwide. Helayel released the following statement:

The time has come for me to move on to focus on my art, travel and other interests. Creating Issa has been one of the most rewarding things in my life. I may be leaving, but the Issa girl will live forever in my heart.
