    Jonathan quits equivocating on NGF

During last Thursday’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) family dinner in Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan finally laid to rest any speculation about his determination to wrest control of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) from the hands of his enemies, or failing that, to destroy it. Not only did he reportedly refer to Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State as chairman of the NGF, he also indirectly gave notice which side he supports and how ready he is to help bury the group. That singular but unpresidential act showed the frailty and fecklessness of our leading politicians. But it isn’t only the character of the governors that has been weighed and found wanting; by publicly and casually embracing the Jang faction of the NGF, the president gave indication that any morality he had pretended to since his assumption of office was simple a hoax.

It is true the president has not come out clearly to endorse the Jang faction. But what is his word worth anyway? Is it not recalled that he also denounced those who suggested he had any vested interest in the NGF election before it held on May 24? But whether in the case of the post-election endorsement or pre-election interest in the NGF chairmanship, the president had pretended to be uninterested. No one is fooled. More, it is doubtful whether he would be able to fool anyone again as to his bona fides, let alone his nobility of purpose and values. It is now as clear as day that Dr Jonathan is more than anything else a practical politician unruffled by the contradictions that encase his politics and disfigure his worldview. More worrisomely, he is not even really anxious about how his Machiavellian sentiments war against his proudly publicised religious principles. For to embrace an election loser is one thing; but to embrace an election loser who lives in denial of his defeat is quite another.

There had been times when the president attempted philosophising about life, religion, God and Nigeria’s manifest destiny. To be sure, his philosophy never went beyond the practical and commonsensical perspectives of those long castrated by the dulling atmosphere of the countryside, and the bucolic wisecracks of the village teacher; but at least he made some efforts to be deep, detached and, like Caesar’s wife, above suspicion. If only such accoutrements had been brought to bear on his political morality! What worries the average Nigerian is not Mr Jang’s quixotic chairmanship of the NGF, as the president and his aides must have known by now, but the president’s bravura display of political brinkmanship. The disturbing thing about Dr Jonathan’s endorsement of Mr Jang, obvious from his meeting with the losers last Friday, is how the president so insouciantly subordinated the entire Nigerian presidency to the childish intransigence of the 16 governors in his camp.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat, it is said. The president and his governor friends could admit defeat in the NGF election but refuse to respond to any call for meeting. They could even decide they would be satisfied with associating only within the purview of the PDP Governors’ Forum. Or they could refuse any further association of the 36 governors altogether. But to insist they won an election which they unequivocally lost, and for the president, who fails to understand the weight and pricelessness of the office he occupies, to lend the highest office in the land to that shocking piece of chicanery is both to denigrate all that Nigeria ever aspired to be and to set a dangerous and dispiriting example for the coming generations. It would have been better if Dr Jonathan kept to his untruth of not being interested in the NGF election.

  • Eguavoean quits Sharks

    Eguavoean quits Sharks

Former Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen has parted company with his employers a few days after he made a return to Sharks FC, SportingLife can exclusively report.

A source told SportingLife that the former U-23 coach is no longer interested in coaching Sharks.

‘Cerezo’ as he is fondly called by his admirers walked away from the team yesterday after their week four Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match against Gombe United.

It was gathered that Eguavoen travelled straight to his residence in Benin from Gombe State yesterday.

“No matter what happens in the Sharks versus Gombe United match today (Thursday) either away win, draw or loss, Eguavoen will be walking away from the team and move straight to Benin,” a source told SportingLife yesterday.

It was suggested that Eguavoen was unhappy with some members of the technical crew whom he felt were not truthful about wanting to move the club forward.

SportingLife gathered that threats from militant groups allegedly organised by these club officials compelling him to use untested players as against experienced ones to prosecute league matches did not go down well with Eguavoen.

“They are not helping matters at all for Eguavoen,” said the source.

“He is tired of what is going on in the team, most especially the pranks and the threats to use players that are not up to the standard for matches.”

SportingLife had reported last Friday that Eguavoen had accepted the pleas of prominent indigenes of Rivers State to continue as the team’s Technical Adviser. The intervention of the Commissioners for Sports and Justice made Eguavoen reconsider his decision to re-join the team without signing any contract with the management of the Port Harcourt club.

After he was unveiled, Eguavoen insisted on signing a contract before starting work. But the management told him that he would get the contract papers later. He was further told that the contract had been drafted and sent to the Ministry of Justice after he threatened to walk out on the deal.

In Sharks’ first game of the season against Warri Wolves in Port-Harcourt, Eguavoen chose to be in Owerri to watch Heartland take on Nembe City.

But in the second game which was against Kaduna United in Kaduna, Eguavoen watched from the stands based on the management’s instructions that he step aside and return only when he had seen the contract papers.

The management however again prevailed on him and in Sharks’ week three game against Kwara United in Port Harcourt which they lost 0-1 at home, Eguavoen finally started work.

    Bosso quits Wikki Tourists

Wikki Tourists Technical Adviser, Isa Ladan Bosso, has resigned his appointment with the club just after one year in charge, SportingLife can reveal.

The former Flying Eagles coach officially tendered his resignation letter on Wednesday which was addressed to the State Commissioner for Sports and team secretary.

Bosso, who joined the club at the beginning of the 2010/2011 season after they gained promotion to the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), expressed his gratitude to the club for the opportunity to lead the team.

In his resignation letter made available to SportingLife, Bosso said: “Sir, l want to use this medium to formally inform you of my decision to part ways with the team for now. Sir, l have enjoyed a healthy working relationship with you and will always remain loyal and grateful to you, supporters of the team, state government and the entire people of Bauchi State for all their support and commitment. Please take it as destiny. May Allah continue to guide, protect and bless you and the team abundantly.”

The former Kano Pillars coach has, however, said he is open for discussions with any interested club for the coming season.

“I wish to declare myself free for discussion with any interested club,” Bosso said.

SportingLife understands that the Wikki Tourists management has already invited three top Nigeria coaches for interview for Bosso’s replacement.

It was learnt that eight prominent coaches applied for the vacant job initially while only three were shortlisted.

Former chief coach of Nasarawa United Bala Nyku tops the list of candidates.

  • 2015: Akpabio’s deputy quits

    2015: Akpabio’s deputy quits

Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor Nsima Ekere quit his job yesterday – “for personal reasons.”

His terse letter of resignation sent to Governor Godswill Akpabio reads: “Pursuant to Section 306 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I kindly notify you of my resignation from the Office of the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State forthwith on personal grounds.

“I want to thank you immensely for the opportunity to serve Akwa Ibom State and the good people of the state as well in the remaining years of your administration.”

A statement signed by Ekere’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Inemesit Ina, confirmed the resignation, but refused to go beyond the lines in the letter.

Reports from the state indicated that senior government officials discussed the development in hushed tones as the news filtered through in the course of the day.

Attempts to speak with the governor’s media aides failed, but sources indicated that preparations for succession to Akpabio had caused a split in the government. Ekere, 47, who hails from Ikot Abasi in Eket Local Government is said to be interested in taking over the reins of government in 2015, while the Secretary to the State Government, Umana Okon Umana, who hails from Uyo Senatorial District, is also reported to be insistent on taking over the Uyo Government House.

Both men are believed to enjoy wide support in their respective spheres of influence, and had looked forward to obtaining the governor’s support.

A high official of the government said yesterday, “it has been a difficult decision for the governor to take. On the one hand, he largely owes his victory at the poll in 2007 to Umana. As Finance Commissioner in the Victor Attah administration, Umana stuck out his neck, supported the governor morally and financially and galvanized votes for him in the very crucial Uyo district.

“He thereafter emerged the SSG and has remained a major pillar of the government. He had left no one in doubt that he had his eyes on occupying the seat at the expiration of Akpabio’s tenure. Again, in 2011, in the face of very stiff challenge from Senator John Akpanudoedehe who crossed to the Action Congress of Nigeria to pick up the ticket, the task of mobilising support for the PDP in the Uyo district fell on Umana. He performed creditably.

“On the other hand, Ekere has been a very loyal deputy. He served creditably and proved his worth in the government. His people in the Eket district believe that it is their turn to produce the governor. In the 1999-2007 period, Victor Attah, from Uyo, was the governor. Since then Akpabio, from Ikot Ekpene district, has been in the saddle. It is therefore believed that, in the interest of justice and equity, it should go to the Eket zone.

“This is the crux of the matter. The resignation has further complicated matters, coming so soon after the 2011 election.”

Ekere was one of the 47 aspirants who indicated interest in succeeding Governor Attah in 2007. He stepped down in support of the governor and thus boosted his political standing. He was thus tipped as the running mate, but, on the intervention of party elders, shelved his ambition.

He was replaced by Patrick Ekpotu, a loyalist of Governor Attah, in a bid for reconciliation ahead of the 2007 election. But, Ekpotu was dropped last year and replaced by Ekere, in what was described as a reward for loyalty.

Resignations by deputy governors are not new in the Akwa Ibom political scene. On June 23, 2005 , Chris Ekpeyong was impeached by the state House of Assembly, apparently at the behest of Governor Attah. However, the intervention by the national leadership of the PDP saw the House reverse the removal. He consequently resigned on July 5. He was replaced by Michael Udofia.

In October 2010, there was heavy speculation that Ekpotu had resigned. This was later denied and the deputy governor was allowed to serve out the term.
