  • Yuletide: Don’t expose yourself to rape, police warn women

The Ogun Police Command have warned women especially young girls to apply caution while seeking fun during the yuletide, saying rape cases may soar higher in the state during the festive period.

The spokesman of the Ogun Police Command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, told The Nation that with the approach of yuletide, there is the possibility that rapists would want exploit the mood of the season to lure unsuspecting fun – seeking ladies and girls to where they could be raped.

Adejobi advised ladies to avoid hanging out with strangers or pass through unfamiliar or dark pathways by night during the yuletide.

He also cautioned them against wearing revealing attires when going out, consumption of beer or wine  and  going out with new acquaintances as that could exposed them to the risk of sexual assault by persons with inclinations for gang rape during the yuletide.

Meanwhile, the command has appointed Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP) Gbenga Megbope as the new head of the Special Anti Robbery Squad in the state.

In a statement, Adejobi said the appointment of Megbope was to engender better policing of Ogun state.

•Election cancelled in Southern Ijaw Local Govt

Another electoral logjam surfaced yesterday —courtesy of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which failed to conclude a governorship election.

Just as it did in Kogi State last month, the agency threw a spanner in the works,  declaring Saturday’s election in Bayelsa State inconclusive.

These are the two governorship elections so far held under the chairmanship of Prof. Mahmud Yakubu as INEC chairman.

INEC cancelled the rescheduled poll in Southern Ijaw Local Government Council, one of the eight local governments in the state.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Baritor Kpagir said the cancellation was endorsed by the national headquarters.

Kpagir said the election was cancelled, following reports that the poll in Southern Ijaw was substantially marred by violence, ballot box snatching, intimidation and other irregularities.

The REC, at the state collation centre located inside the multipurpose hall of the secretariat of Yenagoa Local Government, noted that in the interest of international compliance with best practice, the cancellation of the election became necessary.

Kpagir indicated that a new date for the election would be chosen and communicated to all the stakeholders.

The Chief Retuning Officer, Prof. Zena Akpogu, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar in Cross River State, maintained that he could not declare any of the candidates the winner of the poll, without the results from Southern Ijaw Local Government.

The mainly-riverine Southern Ijaw is the biggest council in the state. It has over 120,000 voting strength, which would decide the eventual winner of the election between Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) Seriake Dickson and the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) Chief Timipre Sylva.

The governorship election took place on Saturday in Yenagoa, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Sagbama, Brass, Ekeremor, Ogbia and Nembe Councils. The poll in Southern Ijaw council was rescheduled for Sunday also as a result of violence and killings.

In the collated results from the seven local governments as announced by the Returning Officer, the PDP leads with 33,154 votes. The PDP polled 105,748 votes as against APC’s 72,594 votes.

Prior to the cancellation of the election in Southern Ijaw, some PDP women and youths, who wore black dresses and led by the party’s Bayelsa Women Leader Faith Opuene, protested near the collation centre, expressing displeasure over the poll in Southern Ijaw.

Barely 30 minutes after the protest, despite the police ban on demonstrations, some militants from Southern Ijaw escorted two Hilux vans, one of them with Bayelsa Government House registration number: BYGH145, into the collation centre.

The two vehicles were loaded with uncounted ballot materials, without any security escort or INEC official.

The militants, who were singing war songs, as they alighted from the Hilux vans, claimed that they escaped from Southern Ijaw with the results of three units of Amassoma in the council area, in view of the violence, but the electoral materials were not accepted by the INEC officials at the collation centre.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Training and Development, Hashimu Argungu, told the militants to give peace a chance, assuring them that INEC would address their complaints.

The results are: Brass Local Government PDP 21,755 votes, APC 6,516 votes.

    Sagbama PDP: 24, 258, APC 5, 382.  Yenagoa, PDP 24,258, APC 14, 563

    Kolokuma/Opokuma PDP 7,619 votes, APC 6,896.

Ekeremor PDP 14,602, APC 7,918 votes.

For the results announced yesterday: Ogbia PDP 13,051, APC 9,106 and Nembe PDP 10,768 APC 6,974 votes.

From the seven local government areas, PDP polled 105,748 votes. APC had 72,594 votes, with a difference of 33,154 votes.

The police warned against plans by some people to protest in Yenagoa, the state capital.

A statement by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Hashimu Argungu, banned all forms of procession, rally or demonstration.

The statement was circulated at INEC’s collation centre in Yenagoa, where the results of the governorship election in the state were being announced.

It was gathered that the PDP had already mobilised people to protest against the rescheduled election that was held in Southern Ijaw.

Argungu said the police were informed about plans by some “disgruntled elements” to carry out illegal rallies and demonstrations in the state.

The DIG said: “This form of conduct will jeopardise the ongoing electoral process. Therefore, the command warns all intending perpetrators to desist from such acts, as it will deal decisively with any person or group of persons who wish to engage in any conduct that will compromise the existing peaceful atmosphere.

“Members of the public are advised to go about their normal businesses, as security agencies are poised to guarantee the safety of lives and property.”

Earlier, Dickson was live on the state-owned Radio Bayelsa, protesting the electoral process, at the time he was leading with over 28,000 votes.

Dickson asked residents to hit the streets at 2p.m. for a rally to protest what was happening at the collation centre and he vowed to lead the protest.

The Bayelsa governor, who fielded questions from listeners, said: “There will be a rally to resist what is happening now. It is clear to me that security services have become an army of occupation.”

Security was strengthened in the state capital, with four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) deployed round the state collation centre.

Detachment of anti-bomb squad, riot policemen and soldiers took over some strategic areas in Yenagoa, to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

  • Four men ‘rape’ two sisters

    Four men ‘rape’ two sisters

Four men were yesterday paraded in Lagos by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly raping two daughters in Lagos of their colleague.

NSCDC Lagos Commandant, Gabriel Abafi gave the abused sisters’ ages five and three.

Abafi, who paraded the suspects at the command’s office in Alausa, Ikeja, said: “We received a distress call around 9.15pm on Sunday that some men sexually abused toddlers between ages 3 and 5. During our investigation, the girls themselves pointed at the suspects. What do they know? Why were they harassed by these men?

“The government should come to our aid so cases like this do not escalate. We appreciate the human rights activist who informed us about this incident. The public also needs to sensitise us. If some parents are busy to take care of their children, they should take them to crèche. There are bruises on their private parts. They have been taken to Lagos State University Teaching hospital (LASUTH) for medical checkup but the results are not yet out. We will not rest until justice is done.”

The suspects are Deji Adenekan, 39; Taiye Ojo, 32; Peter Arabu, 33 and John Mahason, 24.

The victims’ father, Ayodele Ekundayo, a labourer, said he became aware of the incident five days ago when his second child kept shouting pepper.

He said his children had been in his custody since the second child was eight months old.

He said: “When I didn’t answer her, she removed her pants in tears and spread her legs for breeze to blow her private parts. That was when I became curious. I called her elder sister, who will clock five in two months what has been happening whenever I wasn’t around, then she pointed at Peter. I met them few months ago where they offloaded cement. Whenever we wanted to travel to deliver cement in other states, these colleagues advised me to leave my children behind since I was given a room. If I didn’t take them along, I leave them with the security guard.

“My daughter told me that whenever I was behind the trailer offloading cement, the driver (Adenekan) was always fingering them. She also said after he does, Ojo enters the trailer and does the same. She also said that whenever I left them with the security guard (Mahason), he puts on the company’s generator, gives them a phone to watch a blue film and sleeps with them. She said Arabu fingered her and slept with her. When I asked my colleagues, they didn’t say anything. When Arabu came, he threatened to kill me if I said anything about it. . For two days, he threatened me and that was how people heard.”

Adenekan, a driver, who’s married and has three children, said he didn’t do anything.

He said: “I met the children through their father. Their father brought them to our yard. He told us that their mother left them and he didn’t have a place to keep them. It was Ojo that brought their father to our yard. I don’t know him before. I didn’t touch her. I was even at home on the day the father came to meet us in our yard. They should look for Segun that was the first name the girl mentioned. I will never help anyone again.”

Ojo, 32, a native of Ondo State, said he only assisted their father, adding: “He said since his wife left him, he has been single-handedly taking care of them. He called me on Friday, saying some people did something to his children. I only assisted him; I don’t know anything about it. I also have my own child.”

Mahason, a security guard at Kazmus Nigeria Enterprises, said the father usually left them severally whenever he went to work.

He said: “There is no relationship between me and their father. He only came and said he had no place to stay.”

  • Protest in LAUTECH over rape, robbery

Protest in LAUTECH over rape, robbery

Increase in the spate of robbery and rape in the host community of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has led to a protest by students, last Monday.

The protesters, who were led by Students’ Union Government (SUG) leaders, shut down of all entrances to the university, denying both staffs and visitors entrance into the campus. The demonstrators, who barricaded the school gate for hours, prevented the Vice–Chancellor (VC), Prof Sulaiman Gbadegesin, and other principal officers from gaining access to the school.

For 45 minutes, top officials of the school management made effort to persuade the protesters to re-open the school gate, but the students rebuffed. Attempts by the VC to speak to the students were futile.

Hours after, the students left the school gate to protest on the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway.

Halls of Residence close to the campus have lately been invaded by unknown hoodlums, who robbed and sexually-abused students. Some students, who live far from the campus, were mugged on their way to their hostels.

In the past weeks, CAMPUSLIFE gathered that more than seven students had fallen victims. The assailants, after forcing their ways into the hostels, robbed students at point gunpoint. The protesters alleged that the management showed no concern on the excuse that the incidents occurred outside the campus.

The General Secretary of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Hamzat Jamiu, who was part of the protesters, said the situation was unacceptable, noting that the students embarked on the protest when management did not respond to their complaints.

He said: “The last straw that broke the camel’s back was the insensitivity of the management to the plight of students. Rather than strengthening security around the off-campus hostel, the management increased the acceptance fee of the freshers.”

The SUG Welfare Director, Ridwan Okedara, said the solution to the problem was for the school to provide hostels on campus.

The management could not be reached for comment.

  • Rape victim changes school

    Rape victim changes school

THE four-year-old girl allegedly raped by her school bus driver has stopped attending the school following her bitter experience.

She has resumed in a new school, following her insistence not to attend her old school, her grandmother, Mrs T. Ajose, told The Nation yesterday.

“My daughter resumed in her new school last week,” she said.

Mrs. Ajose, a businesswoman, claimed the suspect, Yemi Adesina, committed the act within the school premises and has been detained at the Panti Police Station in Adekunle, Yaba, Lagos.

She said she knew about the incident when she went to fetch her granddaughter after school.

Ajose, who said she found it hard to believe that her granddaughter had been raped, rushed the girl to a hospital, where her fear was confirmed.

“The following day, when I got to the school, I shouted on top of my voice. Though my daughter has been attending the school since she was 18 months old, the teachers pretended as if they didn’t know her. Some residents and passers-by who heard my cry intervened and, in the process, destroyed some of the school’s property out of anger after listening to my story.”

Mrs. Ajose said she had been going to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) since the school wrote a petition that those who vandalised its property caused the death of one of its teachers, Mrs. Folashade Ademosu.

She said: “We have been coming to SARS for the past one week and they haven’t attended to us. Two days ago, a personal assistant to the Commissioner of Police said until the late teacher’s family comes to SARS, we will not be attended to.

“I am tired of coming here. We are always in the sun; at times when it rains, we are always here. All that is happening has really affected my business because I have been locking my shop for the past two weeks. Will my daughter’s case just end like that? I just don’t know. No one has come to me, not even the school management or the suspect’s family,” she said.

Mrs. Ajose said they were asked to come to SARS on October 12.

When The Nation visited the late teacher’s Abesan Estate home, her widower, Alhaji Ademosu, described her death as unfortunate.

He said his late wife was the victim’s class teacher, adding that she wasn’t aware of the incident until some people went to vandalise their school.

“She told me that when the residents entered, they shouted ‘that is the teacher!’ That is the teacher and it was when she tried to escape that she broke her leg. I even heard she locked herself inside the toilet for safety.

“Instead of the school authorities to take her to the hospital, they took her and the school bus driver to Alagolo Police Station. A family friend pleaded she should be taken to a hospital. She complained of her back and leg but after the bone setters fixed her leg, she managed to walk.”

Ademosu said it was when she was cooking on Sallah day that she slumped.

He said: “It is painful. Before she died, she kept asking me to hold her hands. She complained of her stomach. She was still in shock over the incident that happened in the school. Ahhh! I miss her. She bought so many things for Sallah but she couldn’t use any of them. I am not ready for any court case. I can’t go through the stress.”

Police spokesman Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), who promised to speak on the matter, did not do so at the time of this report.
