  • Man remanded for allegedly kidnapping, raping girl, 14

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has ordered the remand in prison custody of a 20-year-old man, George Miebaka, for alleged rape.

    Miebaka, a neighbour to the teenager, allegedly abducted the 14-year-old on February 24, took her to an unknown place, tied her mouth, hands and legs and raped her.

    He was alleged to have raped the girl continuously for five days before he was apprehended on March 1.

    The accused allegedly committed the offence between February 24 and March 1 at Okrika town in Okrika Local Government.

    The two-count charge of rape and abduction was not read to him because the court lacks jurisdiction to hear the matter, hence, he did not take any plea.

    Miebaka was not represented by any lawyer.

    Magistrate Sokari Andrew-Jaja ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and his case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

    He adjourned the case till April 18.

  • Man, 73, arrested for raping girl, 13

    A 73-year-old native doctor, Joseph Umuluku, has been arrested by the Warri ‘B’ Division of Delta State Police Command for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

    It was gathered that the suspect, a resident of Giwa-Amu Street at Okumagba Layout in Warri, lured the victim into a bathroom where he had carnal knowledge of her and inflicted serious injuries on her.

    A police source at the ‘B’ Division Police Station, who spoke in confidence, said Umuluku is a neighbour to the parents of the victim.

    According to him, the suspect has made confessional statement and the matter will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

    “The matter was reported at our station on Monday and the girl sustained serious injuries as a result of the rape.

    “However, the police are trying to seek medication for the girl, while the suspect is making confessional statement. He will be charged to court once investigation is concluded.”

    The President of Nigerian Child Welfare Fund, Comrade Joshua Omorere, who has been calling for the case to be charged to court, said: “It is a weighty offence that cannot be settled out of court. They live in the same compound and the man must have been doing it.”

     

  • Man arraigned for allegedly raping girl, 14

    An aged man, Isiaka Alade, has been arraigned before an Ikeja High Court for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl (names withheld).

    Alade was arraigned before Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya on a one- count charge of child defilement contrary to section 137 Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

    According to the prosecutor, Mrs T.N. Aderiye, the defendant, who on account of his old age was allowed to sit in the dock, had between 2013 and December 2014 at 23, Baale Lawan Street, Ayobo defiled his 14-year-old victim “by having sexual intercourse with her”.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the one count charge offence preferred against him by the state government.

    The charge, which was written in English, was interpreted to the defendant in Yoruba by a court registrar.

     

  • Man, 27, charged with raping girl, 4

    A 27-year -old man, Essien Effiong, who allegedly defiled a four-year-old girl was yesterday  arraigned in Lagos.

    Effiong, who resides at Ajegunle in Lagos, is facing a count charge of defilement at an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Kokoye Olusegun told the court that the accused committed the offence on September 8 at his residence.

    Olusegun said the accused lured the girl into his apartment with biscuit and had carnal knowledge of her without.

    “When the girl tried to escape the accused forcefully dragged her back into his room and started putting his fingers into her private part.

    “When the pain was too much for the girl, she started screaming and a neighbor, who was passing by the room at the time, heard her voice.

    “The woman immediately bashed into the room and to her surprise the accused was naked and was inserting his finger into the girl’s private part.

    “The case was reported to the police and the accused was immediately arrested,’’ Olusegun said.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Senior Magistrate M.A. Etti granted the accused N50,000 bail with a surety in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till November.
