Police parade 34 suspected kidnappers, robbers, rapists

Suspected kidnappers were yesterday paraded by the police in Bayelsa State, in connection with the abduction and killing of a 78-year-old victim, Dennis Ogazi.

The suspects were said to have invaded the home of the septuagenarian at Sagbama town in Sagbama Local Government on September 12, 2015, about 7:25pm. They took him to a creek in Delta State.

Police Commissioner Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi paraded the suspected abductors at the command headquarters in Yenagoa. They are among the 34 suspects accused of committing crimes.

He said 248 suspects had been arrested, with 151 cases in court, since he assumed duty in July.

Ogunjemilusi said robbery, cultism, piracy, rape, murder and drug peddling were rampant.

On the killing of the kidnapped victim, he said investigations led to the arrest of two of the four-man gang of kidnappers on October 29.

The police boss said the suspects, David Sunshine and Otuogba Usio, confessed to the crime and confirmed that the septuagenarian died in their camp at Enwe in Isoko South Local Government of Delta State.

He said investigations were on to arrest the fleeing suspects and recover the remains of the victim.

Ogunjemilusi narrated how Ayakeme Ebikie, Frank Pere, Chimezie Richard Ibekwe, Ogoli Stephen and George Ovede robbed a high court judge in his home in Yenagoa.

He said on July 23, the hoodlums broke into the home of Justice Ebiyerin of the High Court II in Yenagoa  about 2am and held him and his family captive.

“They collected his ATM card and went to withdraw money from his account. The robbers stole his plasma TV, phones and other belongings.

“But they were later arrested. Investigation shows that they are responsible for other robberies. The gang on August 22, about 2:30am, broke into the home of Tolumoye Bikikoro and robbed him of his TV set and phones,” the police commissioner said.

He said one locally-made pistol, home theatre DVD and phones were recovered from the hoodlums.

Ogunjemilusi also paraded James Kalaye and Austin Olozulu, who were said to be on the police wanted list for killing two officers.

They were reportedly nabbed at Etegwe, a popular car wash in Yenagoa, on October 30, for killing Sergeant Sagbe Owori.

The suspects were said to have killed the victim at Bossy Waters on Tombia Amassoma Road, on January 19, 2014.

The police boss said: “They were also responsible for the killing of Cpl. Manageable Ekeiweri of the Department of Operations, Yenagoa, on November 24, 2014 after which they took away his rifle and 30 rounds of live ammunition.”

He said one Brownie pistol and a locally-made pistol were recovered from the suspects, adding that suspected hoodlums, namely David Obozeke, Odion Ekpon, Kelvin Kiani, Uzoma Ogini and Iheke Joseph were arrested for robbery.

Ogunjemilusi said the suspects broke into the home of Ake Godspower at Biogbolo, Yenagoa, tied him up and stole his Toyota Hilux registered as GBB 405 FS and other valuables.

Confirming that the vehicle had been recovered, he said Ovonizibe Eferebo with his gang broke into the home of Mathew Ziworitin at Okaka, Yenagoa and stole his laptop, phones and other belongings.

The police commissioner said the victim shouted for help and a patrol team intercepted the suspects in a Chevrolet car with number plate BYS 004 TR.

He said the stolen items, three locally-made pistols, two cartridges, a big iron cutter and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered in the car.

Ogunjemilusi noted that other suspects were arrested for defilement and cultism.

  • Police parade three suspected rapists of 12-yr-old

The Abia State Commissioner of Police [CP] Leye Oyebade, has said that the command has mapped out new strategies to combat crimes in Aba and other parts of the state.

The CP made the remarks while parading Speaking in Umuahia while parading three men who were alleged to have defiled a 12 year old girl.

The suspects were arrested by police men at the Arochukwu division.

Oyebade said the three men, who took turns to defile the minor, were arrested following the alarm raised by the girls’ guardian, adding that the victim has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The suspects, according to the CP, are Chima Ochiabuto (35), Immaculate Ogbonnaya (25) and Uche Nwaokoro (20). He said the three men have confessed to the crime of defiling the minor at different occasions.

Other suspects paraded by the police include two suspected members of a car-snatching syndicate. “They specialise in the stealing of cars parked with master keys. They sell the cars at give away prices.

“A combined team of officers from the Aba division, on information arrested Victor Eborgu, a student of Caritas University, Enugu, who resides in Aba, is the leader of the car-snatching syndicate.

“He is the leader of the syndicate and during the operation, a Mercedes Benz car 230E, with number UMA 134 HR, was recovered. This vehicle had earlier been reported stolen from where it was parked.

“The arrest of the suspects led the police to the recovery of another Mercedes Benz 230E, with the number AE 926 AMB, from where it was hidden at one of the hotels in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba. His accomplice, Chidiebere Nnamezie, a blacksmith and moulder of the master keys, was also arrested.

The police also paraded four men suspected to be vandals of solar energy batteries for street lights.  Six batteries were recovered from them.

The police boss said that police operatives at Isuochi Division of the state arrested one Ebuka Dike and George Okafor, both of Obinulo Ngodo, Isuochi of Umunneochi council area.

“They specialize in vandalizing street light installations within the area. Monday Okpo, who is a criminal receiver of stolen goods, who bought the solar energy batteries for the sum of N22,000, was arrested at Onitsha, Anambra State, while six batteries was recovered from them.”

Oyebade said that the recent successes recorded by the police in the state were as a result of the new strategies employed by the command.

He said strategies have led to peace in the commercial city, adding that the police are determined to ensure the security of life and property for investors to come in.

He also used the forum to warn all those who have formed the habit of organising illegal gatherings to desist from it, saying the police will no longer fold its arm and watch them destroy the peace in the state.

“We are ready to contain such groups that may want to cause trouble in the state. I want you yo know that there are ways to express grievances if any.”

Suspected rapists maul primary school teacher in child’s presence

HER screams attracted the vigilantes, but before they got to her place, her attackers had fled, leaving her in a pool of blood.

Nobody knew how the assailants entered Mrs Grace Ebyna Jubreel’s Ibeshe, Ikorodu, Lagos home around 3am last Sunday. Their mission also remains a mystery.

Yesterday, her Osogbo, Osun State-based husband, Abimbola Olalekan Jubreel, said they might have come to rape.

The only witness, the Jubreels only daughter, who is 14 months old, cannot explain what happened.

The vigilantes met her crying, with her mother writhing in pain when they arrived.

They also saw the stone and weapons with which Mrs. Jubreel was attacked inside the sitting room.

The vigilantes rushed her to Ikorodu General Hospital from where she was transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Mrs Jubreel, a teacher at the Methodist Primary School, Ibeshe, died 20 minutes into the battle to save her life.

A distraught Jubreel said he did not know that his family’s visit to Osogbo during the last mid-term break between May 25 and 30 would be the last time he would see his wife.

He said on getting to Lagos, he saw blood littering his sitting room and his wife’s torn underwear was on the floor. Her phone, he said, was taken away.

He said: “She must have struggled with the hoodlums when they attempted to rape her because I saw everywhere scattered and found her underwear, torn on the floor. I still wonder if my wife is dead already. I visit Ikorodu every two weeks to see my wife and daughter. I got the shocking news around 5:00 on Sunday from the neighbours that my wife was robbed and injured by some unknown robbers. Before I arrived in Ikorodu on Sunday, I learnt the neighbours and vigilantes had taken her to the Ikorodu General Hospital. When I got to our room, I saw a stone on the floor and I assume that must have been what they used to hit her because she was bleeding seriously on the head and through the mouth. We were referred to LASUTH in Ikeja that Sunday but not long we got to the hospital after 20 minutes, she died.

“Our one-year and two-month old daughter was with her mother when the incident occurred. Therefore, that must have made the little girl cold because she witnessed everything that transpired. She was in shock all through Sunday. The girl is very smart; it’s just that she cannot explain anything.”

Jubreel said his wife was “targeted”, stating: “I learnt they opened the net which they came in through. We have three tenants, one man and two women. Our landlord, however, makes it four but he is not always around. He has another house he lives. But she was the only vulnerable person they attacked. Other tenants were not. It was the vigilantes that rushed to her when they heard her screams but before they got there, the culprits had fled. I know my wife is not the kind of person that quarrels with anyone. It is from house to school and back home. My wife was an easy going person and we spend most of the time talking to each other on phone. She was bleeding profusely and they gave her blood at the General Hospital, Ikorodu before she was taken to LASUTH. She was being attended to by the doctor before she died. The doctor tried to resuscitate her but it was futile.”

Women protested the incessant attacks on them at the traditional ruler’s palace yesterday.

Jubreel said the women went to express their grievances over the latest incident, adding: “I equally learnt that my wife’s case was not the first as reported cases of rape had occurred many times in Ibeshe.  It was obvious they wanted to rape my wife also.”

The late Mrs Jubreel, it was leant, will be buried today.

“We are still in LASUTH to collect her remains and the burial will be taking place at her mother’s place in Maya, Ikorodu tomorrow (today) around 10am. I definitely want justice to be done on this matter because it is a big loss to me. Our marriage is barely up to five years and we are a young couple. My wife is the kind of woman one will always want in his team. I am not settled since morning. After the burial, I will start taking steps in seeking justice,” he said.

The late Mrs Jubreel, who hailed from Anambra State, was a graduate of Education from Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

  • Udu… Where residents are at the mercy of rapists, robbers

On Thursday, September 10, Mrs Omamurhomum Ukana was returning from service at the St Paul Anglican Church, Ekete in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State. She was not carrying cash; the dutiful wife had a tin of palm oil, tangerine and items with which she planned to make supper for her beloved husband of 15 years and their two children.

    She never did.

•The late Mrs Ukana with her family shortly before her death
•The late Mrs Ukana with her family shortly before her death

Barely 100 meters to her home, the 43-year-old nurse was attacked by machete-wielding hoodlums and butchered to a painful death. Three days later when our reporter visited the murder scene, the bestial tale of her killing was aptly told by a congealed mass of her spilled blood.

“She was stabbed in the back, head and in her neck,” her husband, Stephen Ukana, told our reporter.

Mrs Ukana, popularly called Omas by friends, was not the first or 100th victim of a rampaging hoodlums, cultist and other criminals who have taken over Usiefrun, Orhumworun, Ovwian  and other parts of the local government council in recent times, but her death was the most gripping for the people of the horror-struck community and Christian community in the area.

Those who knew her (and they are many) described her as a soft, gentle woman who couldn’t hurt a fly.  She was a matron in health service of Warri South West LGA, where she was also the Focal Person in charge of nutritional heath.

A leader of the Anglican Church in the area told our reporter that she said the opening prayer for the evening church service on the day she was murdered.

So, why was she handed such a heartbreaking end? Trend of similar crimes in the area indicated that it is the modus operandi of hoodlums who have seized the area by the jugular.

•Blood-soaked Oyibo after his bloody encounter with the hoodlums

Mr Ogheneruona Oyibo, a reporter with the Delta State Broadcasting Service, one victim who lived to tell the tale of his encounter, said the criminals are usually young boys, some as young as 17 years or less and have no regard for the sanctity of life or human dignity.

“In my case, they broke a Coca-Cola bottle in my presence after taking my GSM phones, cash and other valuables. They used the bottle to stab me severally; on the head, back and arm before leaving me in the pool of my blood,” Mr Oyibo, told our reporter at the funeral of Mrs Ukana, on September 17.

But for quick intervention of good neighbours who rushed him to the hospital, Oyibo said he would he bled to death.

Our reporters visit to the area showed that the entire Usiefrun and other parts of that axis of the state are battling development challenges ranging from lack of motorable roads, power to all basic amenities. Apart from political appointees and few others, the people are mostly poor and without hope.

Investigation by our reporter revealed that the area has become a hotbed of violence and cult activities with school children, some as young as 12 years, deeply entrenched in cult activities.

The area, with a population of over 100,000, lacks government presence and basic amenities. The Delta Steel Town, the residential quarters of the Delta Steel Complex has deteriorated in the past decade, leading to the dearth of services that were provided by the company to its host.

“You can see the major roads into Orhumworun, Ekete, Aladja and other parts are deplorable. We do not have light or pipe-borne water supply. Parents are losing control over their children. The highest aspiration of some of the youths is to become thugs to politicians and go into politics,” a resident, who asked not to be named for obvious reason, told our reporter.

“Almost every child you find around here now belongs to one cult group or the other. They use their membership of the various cult groups to terrorise even members of their families and neighbours. Those who want to get protection join cults,” a civil servant in the area told our reporter on condition of anonymity.

It was gathered that the security situation in the area worsened further after the head of the Udu Central Vigilante Group, Honorable Prosper Erhinyojare, was gruesomely murdered. The local security chief was shot dead along with an associated at a beer parlour along the Udu Expressway about the 17th day of April, 2014.

It was gathered that the former Councilor’s murder sparked off unrestrained killings, maiming, robbery rape and other crimes in the area. The alleged arrest of his killers by the police has not halted the drift to anarchy.

“Since his death, cultism and criminal activities are on the increase as people are daily attacked. In the early hours of Monday, the corpse of a young m an suspected to be killed by cultists was on Sunday found at Ekete junction. The victim was simply identified as Junior. Also, at Owhase, a woman was killed after she had been robbed.”

Another source said, “Although the said Prosper was not himself free of terror, his presence, in the absence of government, brought law and order to some degree even though there were others under him who used his influence to victimize and carry out nefarious activities.”

It was gathered that members of the local vigilante group guarding the Usiefrun area have emerged as key suspects in the killing of Mrs Ukana. The vigilante gang, it was alleged, had earlier on the morning of September 10, warned of mayhem over the delay in the payment of their salaries.

“One of them particularly warned that when ‘bad things happen’ the people would know their importance and would be forced to pay up. It is instructive that on that same day they did not resume work as usual and the woman, who is the treasurer of the landlords’ union, was killed. So, it is a case of the witch flew over at night and the child died in the morning,” a source in the neighbourhood said.

Police Public Relations Officer, Delta Command, DSP Celestina Kalu, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report on Monday morning. But a source at the Owvian Police Station, who asked not to be named, said, “We are doing our best; it is a very difficult situation.”

The source, who revealed that some suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings, accused some prominent persons in the area of shielding culprits, adding, “When we called one of the suspects he boldly told us that he was at the home of a traditional leader. He said the traditional leader wanted to see us. Of course, we cannot tolerate that.”

  • Senate endorses life jail for rapists

THE Senate has prescribed life imprisonment for rapists and other sexual offenders.

This followed the passage of the Sexual Offences Bill, which prescribes life jail for sexual offenders, including rape, child sex tourism and people who deliberately infect others with the Human Immuno Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS).

The Bill, which was sponsored by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Chris Anyanwu, is expected to get the concurrence of the House of Representatives today.

The Bill also prescribes life imprisonment for gang rape and 10 years jail for incest and child pornography respectively or a fine of N2 million

Other sexual offences would also attract 14 years jail term.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Umaru Dahiru, in his report, said the Bill is meant to redefine and consolidate existing laws on sexual offences.

Anyanwu, however expressed joy over the passage of the Bill which was introduced in Senate since 2013.

According to her, the Sexual Offences Bill “seeks to make a comprehensive legislation on sexual offences by criminalising certain acts such as sexual tourism, child pornography and cultural and religious sexual offences in our criminal jurisprudence.

“The Bill provides for effective witness protection programme in order to protect victims and witnesses in trial for sexual offences.

“It provides for compulsory documentation, supervision of sexual offenders and medical treatment for victims which is in line with the global trend and finally, and most importantly, it provides for adequate and stringent punishments to perpetrators.”

  • Forum seeks tougher penalty for rapists

At a one-day stakeholders summit on Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Bill in Enugu on Tuesday, participants have advocated a jail term without option of fine for convicted rapists in the State.

This was part of the resolutions of the summit organised by the Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Enugu.

The NGO stressed that the call was necessary to serve as deterrent to others against the increased cases of rape and domestic violence.

The summit also resolved that keeping such rapists behind bars would not only deter others from perpetrating the act, but would reform the offenders after serving their term.

“Paying fine may not make the rapists to suffer any physical or psychological pain,” the summit stated.

It also called for the review of the Evidence Act on rape cases, saying that it was ambiguous, stringent and cumbersome and made the proof of evidence difficult.

“A situation where the law says that the victim should provide a third party evidence to prove a rape case is difficult.

“This explains why most of the rapists go free for want of evidence,’’ the summit said.

It also called on the government and other non-governmental organisations to fund an agency that would prosecute rape cases and violence against persons.

It said this would reduce the incidences of settlement out of court or victims refusing to prosecute the case for fear of stigmatisation.

In her remarks, Dr Joy Ezeilo, the Executive Director of WACOL, called for sustainable collaboration among stakeholders in the fight against all forms of violence in the society.

Ezeilo said WACOL recorded 160 cases of rape in six months in Enugu State, urging victims of rape or violence, their relations or friend to speak out to expose the perpetrators.

She said that a register of those convicted of rape would soon be opened in the state as obtainable in developed societies.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the summit themed: “In Search of Effective Remedies for Victims and Survivors of Violence against Persons”, had security agencies, the media, civil society groups and other stakeholders in the prevention of violence in attendance.

It was organised in collaboration with the Legislative Advocacy Coalition for Violence against Women under the Voices for Change Project.

  • Re: Rapists, Cultists Lay Siege to Benue varsity

The attention of the Benue State University Management has been drawn to a publication in the Campus Life pull out of The Nation Newspaper of Thursday June 19, 2014.

In the said report, one Msonter Anzaa, whom we discovered is a medical student of the university, spuriously alleged that rapists and cultists have laid siege on the university.

For the avoidance of doubt and in order to put the records straight, management wishes to once again state in unequivocal terms that:

    • When this false and malicious report was first published in the Nigerian Tribune Newspaper of May 28, 2014, authorities of the University carried out a thorough and incisive investigation but found no iota of truth in the report.

    • Similarly, the Benue State Police Command through the State Commissioner, Mr. Adams Audu, also corroborated the position of management on the said report in a widely published press statement on the same day it was published in The Tribune.

    • That the rumour was put to rest but the author found it a topic for his contribution to The Nation almost one month after it first appeared, speaks volumes about his real motive.

    • It is also noteworthy to point out that some of the alleged incidents in the report, according to the reporter, occurred out of the University Campus hence we view attempts to link such to the University Management or its security personnel as either mischievous or even libelous.

•The author splashed a picture of a roofless structure in the story with a caption: “The Technical Hostel which was hit.”   Management wishes to state in clear terms that the said building is not of the University as its students are not kept in roofless hostels.

    • Ordinarily, management wouldn’t want to join issues with the author, but this clarification has become necessary so as to allay the fears of many and reinforce the confidence of all relevant stakeholders in the University.

    • We appreciate the innovative idea by The Nation and other print media which have availed students the space and opportunity to express themselves on happenings on the campuses. However, it is our candid view that operators of these media should take some of these reports with a pinch of salt as some of the contributors may be swimming in unfamiliar waters by the nature of their disciplines of studies.

    • Finally, we hope that our position as well as that of the Police Command, earlier stated, will serve as a caution against speculative journalism. More so that journalism, unlike law, is not an ass “everybody can ride.”

  • Rapists, cultists lay siege to Benue varsity

Rapists, cultists lay siege to Benue varsity

Rape and robbery cases are on the rise at the Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi. Students are living in fear as rapists and cultists go on the rampage. The security unit appears helpless, reports MSONTER ANZAA .

Within two weeks, after he began his medical programme at the Benue State University (BSU), Gabriel Idoko was robbed twice.

The first happened on his first day in school, said Gabriel, who declined to give his real name.

“I was coming back from class and I saw some people arguing with my roommate who is also a 100-Level student. I stopped to find out what was going on. They were armed with knives; they told me to give them everything I had in my wallet. It was N1,900. They ordered us to move to a corner and told us that they were members of the Black Axe cult group. They said they control the hostel and Wurukum area, threatening to kill us if we shouted,” Gabriel, who described the incident as a “welcome-to-campus package”, narrated.

The following week, Gabriel was robbed again. “I did not have any money with me this time. They asked me to remove my SIM Card and bring my phone. They told me to bring N1,000 later to them if I needed my phone. When I got the money, I called them, but they said I should forget about the phone because they could not remember my face again,” he said.

In the last three months, the school has been under a siege of sorts, raising fear among students whose academic pursuits are being threatened.

Last March, a 100-Level student of Educational Foundation was dispossessed of his money by three hoodlums as he headed for his off-campus residence opposite the second gate of the university. The incident happened behind the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, where many students live.

CAMPUSLIFE investigation showed that the hoodlums operate in the open. Students living in Wurukum area know them, but they are afraid of reporting them for fear of being killed. The hoodlums, who are said to be students, dispossess many of their valuables while returning from night reading.

A student, who did not give his name, said: “The activities of the cultists have turned to a normal thing on the campus. If you are passing by, you need to watch out to greet them; if you don’t, they will attack you on your way back. At times, when somebody greets them, they would say he did not greet them properly. They intimidated one of my classmates. If you are going home, you take a less-valuable phone with you, in case they attack you. Some of them even follow you to your room and insist that you must give them something.”

On why the matter has not been reported to the security unit, Monday Aadonka, said students are terrified of the hoodlums. “If they find out anyone reported them, they will kill the person. The boys are notorious and they will hear everything you say about them. If you say you will pursue them, you are the one to lose because they don’t know why they are in school; so they have all the time to stress your life. We call their hostel a “slaughter house”, but they don’t stay there every day. They sleep around. Half of the people staying in Wurukum are cultists.”

On May 9, two female students of Preliminary Science were attacked by the hoodlums. One was shot on the cheek and could not talk for days. One of the victims, who spoke to this reporter on her sickbed, pleaded that her identity be concealed for security reasons.

She said: “My classmate and I went to read in the school auditorium. When it was 10pm, we left the hall for our hostels. We wanted to pass through the first gate to take a shortcut adjacent to the security office when we saw two guys coming towards us. One of them was putting on a blue shirt and the other wore black. We thought they were going to read on the campus. A few metres away, we heard a bang. We did not know that we had been shot.

“All I could remember was that, I fell on the ground. They took our bags and everything we had with us. It was the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Vice President, who took us to the security office. We were bleeding profusely. I was taken to the school clinic where I stayed for three days. My classmate could not talk for three days. I am yet to get over the incident. We later heard the criminals went to the auditorium to inform students that we had been shot.”

She was not sure if what happened was a robbery or murder attempt. “If it was robbery, the criminals would have approached us and dispossessed us of our valuables, at least, without shooting us. But they did not. They shot us first before taking our bags. We don’t know their motive,” she said.

Students are frequently dispossessed of their valuables in the off-campus hostels opposite the university. CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the criminals target students returning to their hotels in the late hours after reading.

However, it is not only off-campus students that are affected. The hoodlums also operate on campus.

Last month, CAMPUSLIFE gathered, a female student was raped around 7:30pm in Lecture Room 10. It was learnt that the incident occurred during a rainstorm. Students that were reading rushed back to their hostels. In the melee, some hoodlums dragged the victim back and raped her in the lecture hall.

A source said: “The victim was shouting for help but no one could go to her rescue because of the rain. The handkerchief and the tissue paper the rapists used littered the floor.”

Another victim, a 200-Level student of Accounting, was allegedly raped in the Staff Quarters, where she lives with her uncle.

On May 26, Block F in the Technical Female Hostel was invaded by hoodlums at 3am. They robbed occupants in Rooms 1 to 3 of laptops and phones. The incident led to a protest by the girls, prompting a visit by the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Charity Angya.

“The VC was very bitter, because she was not told about the cases of rape and robbery on the campus. She brought an engineer to install iron doors in the hostel. The installation has been going on since then,” an occupant told CAMPUS LIFE.

Three days later, Block D Hostel was attacked. Occupants, however, escaped with their phones and handbags.

Penultimate week, the hoodlums hit Block C in the Technical Female Hostel at 1am.

A 100-Level Mass Communication student, who witnessed the incident, said; “The robbers hid in a bathroom in Block E, which they initially wanted to rob. But the occupants were still awake and making noise. So, the robbers left and went to Block C. Two of them came from the back door and the other two from the entrance at the common room.

“A student caught them in the common room and rushed back to her room. She used her cupboard to block the door. The doors are not strong; one can kick them open. They tried pushing her door open but they could not, so they moved to other rooms. Another girl saw the two from the back door and blocked her room’s door with her bunk. She alerted other occupants, screaming “men in the hostel”. Everyone who heard the shout woke up and blocked their doors. Those that were not fast enough were robbed.”

The students said the robbers were armed with knives and guns. They were chased by male students in nearby hostels

It was learnt that distress calls were sent to the school security personnel, but there was no response. The security men came after students chased away the hoodlums.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that no student was raped in the hostel.

“Nobody was raped. They only collected phones and laptops. I don’t know where the rape story came from,” an occupant told our correspondent.

Students are lamenting the security situation, saying it is affecting their academic pursuit.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof Armstrong Adejo, declined comment. He told our correspondent to speak with the Registrar.

‘Rapists taking advantage of deaf girls in Ibadan’

Dr  Oyeduni Arulogun, a Senior  Lecturer  in  the Department of Health Promotion and Education, College of  Medicine, University of  Ibadan, on Monday said  rapists in Ibadan were taking  undue advantage of  deaf  girls.

Arulogun told  the News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan that indication to  this development was revealed  by  her latest  research work  entitled: “Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs of Deaf girls: A  Case Study of Ibadan.’’

She said: “ Many of the rapists of these deaf girls are their stepfathers and other people well known to them.

“I discovered during my research that they experience sexual, physical and psychological violence just like anyone else.

“It is a worrisome situation because when they are sexually violated, they can’t complain.

“They don’t have the language to communicate and so most of the rape incidents go unreported to the security agents.

“The person that is supposed to help them out does not understand sign language which is a means of communication for the deaf.’’

Arulogun also said that her research  revealed that a number of deaf girl tested were found to be HIV  positive.

“It  was the first time  HIV/AIDS test was conducted for them and it was amazing that many of them were positive,” she said.

According to her, deaf girls are not usually predisposed to  disclosing information to health workers because there has  to be an intermediary between them to interpret.

“They have great concern about the confidentiality of the information  that they give.

“They also miss their appointments  at the clinic because they don’t hear when they are called,” Arulogun said.

The researcher said that concerted efforts should be made toward  giving deaf girls a sense of belonging as special needs persons.

She said that deliberate policies must  be formulated by  health providers to ensure that  some hospital workers understand sign language.

The don  called on security agencies to intensify efforts in the arrest and prosecution of rape victims.

Arulogun also urged journalists   to  assist to check the scourge  by sensitising the people on the incidence  of rape through  media tools. (NAN)

Bill on life for rapists scales second reading

A bill before the National Assembly, the Sexual Offence Bill, 2013, has prescribed life jail for any person convicted of rape.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu, unanimously scaled second reading in the Senate yesterday.

Senators agreed that a stringent law should be enacted to deal with the activities of rapists and paedophiles.

Anyanwu noted that sexual violence and related offences against children, teenagers, women and men, have become pervasive in Nigeria.

She regretted that there was hardly a day without reports of abhorrent sexual crimes, ranging from rape, among others.

The lawmaker said the police in Lagos State recorded over 383 cases of rape this year.

She added: “The children and young people, both male and female, face a danger as they are being routinely targeted by sexual predators and paedophiles.

“What is most disturbing is that a number of these crimes are happening in schools and religious environments.”

Anyanwu reminded her colleagues that sexual abuses were not provided for in the criminal jurisprudence.

She listed gang rape, child pornography and prostitution, sexual tourism, sexual harassment, deliberate transmission of HIV or other STDs, cultural or religious sexual offences, among others, as some offences not covered by criminal jurisprudence.

Zainab Kure (Niger South) said rapist should be shot.

She noted that there were suspects who did not need to be taken to court, especially those who confess.

Helen Esuene said punishment for offenders should be stern to deter others, just as Sola Adeyeye.

He said the bill should be fast-tracked, adding: “If the President doesn’t sign it quickly, we should veto him.”

The Osun Central lawmaker noted that in the past, “you dared not touch the breast of a woman without her permission.”
