  • Supporters refute rumours of Ladoja’s plan to dump ADC for ZLP

The tension over unconfirmed reports that Sen. Rashidi Ladoja will lead his supporters out of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), for Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) this weekend, was doused yesterday, when his followers rose from a meeting to confirm their stay in the ADC and their loyalty to the former governor.

All the 49 candidates of the party also affirmed Sen. Olufemi Lanlehin as the party’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) didn’t recognize Lanlehin while displaying lists of governorship candidates in the state.

Rising from emergency meetings held at the party’s secretariat at Samonda, Ibadan, the state capital, the politicians reaffirmed confidence in the ability of Ladoja; Chief Michael Koleoso; Dr Adebisi Busari; Chief Layiwola Olakojo and Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle to lead the party and its candidates to victory in next year’s election.

Spokespersons for the forum and lawmakers representing Atiba State Constituency, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola and Hon. Segun Olaleye, from Ibadan North II constituency, said the meetings, which were well attended, had in attendance the three Senatorial candidates of the party, Sen. Monsurat Sunmonu (Oyo Central); Senator Soji Akanbi (Oyo South); Chief Bayo Lawal (Oyo North); 14 House of Representatives and 32 House of Assembly candidates.

The lawmakers said the party’s stakeholders were confident that the leaders, with their “enviable political pedigree and time-tested electoral value,” would lead the campaign for the party as soon as INEC lifts the ban of campaign.

Olaleye dispelled insinuation that Ladoja would dump the party, emphasising that the former governor would join forces with other leaders to bring about a pro-people government in the state in 2019.

“When the time for campaign comes and our leaders lead the charge, it will be clear to all that our party will form the next government and our candidates will sweep the polls. ADC is strong in all the zones of the state,” he said.

Olaleye also appealed to the group of 12 aggrieved governorship aspirants in the party to sheath their swords, assuring them that their interest would be taken care of with Sen. Lanlehin as the incoming governor of the state in 2019.

“We are not saying they don’t have reasons to be aggrieved. But we want them to consider the larger interest of the people of the state and the love and the goodwill the party has enjoyed within a short period of time” he said.

  • EFCC re-arraigns Ladoja for diverting public funds

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday re-arraigned former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja for allegedly diverting the state’s funds.

The re-arraignment followed an amendment to the charge by the commission.

Ladoja was charged with converting N4.7 billion from the state treasury to his personal use.

He was re-arraigned along with his former Commissioner for Finance Waheed Akanbi on 11 counts of money laundering and unlawful conversion of public funds.

In the amended charge, EFCC added that Ladoja allegedly “compelled” a broker to sell the state’s shares.

EFCC alleged that the former governor allegedly did not remit N 1.9 billion realized from the sale of the shares.

The commission told the court that the money allegedly went to Ladoja, his family and friends and was not refunded.

EFCC had closed its case before the amendment, but rather than open their defence, the defendants opted to file no-case submissions.

Moving the no-case submissions on Monday, Ladoja’s lawyer Mr Bolaji Onilenla said EFCC did not make out a prima facie case against his client.

An EFCC investigator, Abubakar Madaki, had testified that the shares, worth N6.6billion, were sold without the state executive council’s resolution.

According to the investigator, Ladoja engaged Fountain Securities as a portfolio manager to sell the shares at a discounted rate, adding that the shares were acquired by McLace Securities.

But, Onilenla faulted Madaki’s evidence, arguing that the evidence he gave should have been given by the banks concerned.

He said documents tendered by the prosecution through Madaki ought to have been certified and tendered by the banks and were therefore invalid.

The lawyer said there were no complaints by the state that the shares were sold illegally.

“We urge the court to hold that there is no prima-facie case against the first defendant and we court to discharge and acquit him accordingly,” Onilenla said.

Counsel for Akanbi, Mr Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), said what the prosecution witnesses said in their evidences were not sufficient to ask the defendants to enter a defence.

“We urge the court to uphold the no-case submission of the second defendant,” the SAN said.

But, prosecuting counsel Olabisi Oluwafemi urged the court to order the defendants to open their defence.

He said the evidence given by the prosecution witnesses raises several questions for which the defendants should be called upon to answer.

EFCC accused the defendants of converting N1,932,940,032.48 belonging to Oyo to their personal use through the Guaranty Trust Bank account of a company, Heritage Apartments Limited, despite knowing that it was proceed of crime.

The prosecution said Ladoja removed £600,000 from the state coffers in 2007 and sent it to Bimpe Ladoja in London.

Ladoja also allegedly bought an armoured Land Cruiser jeep with N42 million for himself using public funds.

EFCC said he converted N728,600,000 and another N77,850,000 at different times in 2007, and allegedly transferred N77, 850,000 to Bistrum Investments, which he nominated to help him purchase a property named Quarter 361 in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The alleged offence, EFCC said, contravenes sections 17(a) and18 (1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, punishable under sections 14(1), 16(a) (b) and 18(2).

Ladoja and Akanbi pleaded not guilty.

Ladoja was governor from May 29, 2003 to January 12, 2006 when he was impeached. On November 1, 2006, the Appeal Court Ibadan, declared the impeachment null and illegal.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision on November 11, 2009, and Ladajo resumed office on December 12, 2006. He, however, lost a re-election bid.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned until November 12 for hearing.

  • Why there is so much hardship – Ladoja

Berates Oyo govt over demolition of Ayefele building

Former Governor of Oyo State and the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja has explained why there is so much hardship  and groaning among Nigerians .

He said that the economic condition in Nigeria is hard because those in government have refused to accept the truth of the hardship being experienced by Nigerians.

According to him, the failure to accept that there is a problem is the main reason why the government cannot search for solutions to it.

Ladoja who stated this on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen after observing the Ramadan prayer added that the salary earners in Nigeria are suffering the most under the present government.

The Osi-Olubadan of Ibadanland who noted that the civil servants who started earning N18,000 minimum wage in 2003 when dollar exchanged for N150 are still earning the same amount when dollar now exchanges for N370,  saying civil servants are now earning less than half of their salaries 15 years after.

While praying for a better country and Sallah celebrations for all Nigerians next year, Ladoja lamented that the hardship in the country has heightened and called for urgent steps to address the disturbing trend.

Ladoja who recently dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC)  stated that the way out of the woods was for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to accept the fact that there is problem so as to find solutions to it but noted that the government was living in denial.

On the demolition of the Music House of Yinka Ayefele, the former governor who described it as unfortunate said that the government should have called on the owner for regularization of his approval papers and fined him for negligence if he went outside the approval.

“Let’s say he (Ayefele) contravened the law. The only thing they said was about documentations. He did not ask for approval for certain things. What I would have expected a government to do is to regularize it and give him penalty for it for not been diligent enough to ask for approval. Because the building is not crossing any carnal, it is not disturbing the flood plain. It does not constitute an environmental crisis to anybody. They can penalize him but not to pull down any part of the building.

“The country is hard. By the time i woke up this morning those outside my house were more than 2000. That shows the situation in the country. We need to pray that next year should be better than what we are experiencing today. It is true that the Imam said we should sacrifice but there should be limit to what we would be sacrificing. May Nigeria be better for all of us.

We have to start from the acceptance of truth. But if you don’t accept there is problem there is no how you will be looking for solutions to it. When you are campaigning you can say whatever you like but when you are in government it is another thing. We were alive when you said naira will change for one dollar.

We were alive when Tam David West told us petrol will sell for N45naira per litre. We were alive but we know the situation today. The situation is terrible but who are those that are losing more? The salary earners are the one losing in Nigeria.  The person who was on N18, 000 minimum wage in 2003 when the dollar was exchanging for N150 naira per dollar is still on N18,000 salary today when dollar is now exchanging for N370 naira. So it means that the salary earner is earning less than half of what he was earning in 2003 now. What is happening here is known to everybody because the world is a global village.”

“And then the various competitions between the various groupings is not helping situation to get better. We have competition among the political parties. We have competition among the ethnic groups. We have class competition. These are not helping us. The government did not accept that we had Boko Haram problem, they did not accept we have Fulani herdsmen problem. We are now talking about bandits. The next time they will say it is people from Libya that has come to invade us. So it is the fault of not accepting the truth and that is why we are not getting the solution.”

  • Oyo ADC releases timetable for membership registration, congresses

The Oyo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday released the timetable for membership registration, ward, local government and state congresses.

The party had its ranks boosted last week when a former governor Rashidi Ladoja and Chief Michael Koleoso joined with their supporters.

A caretaker committee with the responsibility of organizing the congresses and registration was last Thursday inaugurated in Ibadan, the state capital by the Acting National Chairman of the party, Dr Ralph Nwosu.

A statement by the committee’s Publicity Secretary and former Commissioner for Education, Dr Nureni Adeniran, on Monday said registration of party members will hold between Friday, August 10 and Thursday, August 16.

According to him, ward and local government congresses will hold on Saturdays August 18 and August 25 respectively while state congress is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, August 28.

Adeniran urged all party members to participate in the scheduled activities and conduct themselves peacefully, adding that the task to bring a people-oriented government in 2019 must be done with determination.

He explained that there was the need to put the structure of the party in all the wards, councils and in the state so as to hit the ground running in the quest to free the people from the yoke imposed on them by the All Progressives Congress (APC-led) administration.

He noted that the creation of the party structure would also enhance it “smooth and effective take off,” boasting that the ADC remained the government-in-waiting in the state.

  • Ladoja finally dumps PDP for ADC

A former governor of Oyo State, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, waved a final bye to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday and formally announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The move came barely a year after he rejoined the PDP from the Accord Party following extensive talks between him and PDP leaders.

But the former governor said the national leadership of PDP has been unfair to him despite his genuine intention to return to the party he jointly built and on whose ticket he governed the state between 2003-2007.

Addressing supporters at his Bodija, Ibadan, residence, Ladoja recounted efforts by him to stabilize the PDP in the state and in the country, and said those sacrifices went unrecognized as he was sidelined by the party leadership in drawing up lists of candidates for ward, local government and state congresses.

Ladoja said he has now accepted the responsibility of facilitating the defection of serving and former governors and lawmakers across the country into the ADC.

He said:“the assignment that the delegation of ADC from Abuja gave me is that the governors that are planning to join ADC, that I should facilitate their defection to ADC. I may not always be around, but it is for the betterment of our party. This is because I am sure that the home front in the state is safe. Those at home are competent.

“The ADC and PDP have signed an agreement to present a joint presidential candidate. What we are seriously working on for now is that the presidential candidate should emerge from ADC. “This will compel me to move to different parts of the country quickly so that ADC will hold the ace in other states, after we have conducted the congresses in Oyo State.

“As it is now, there is no ward in Oyo State that we don’t have presence. If possible, we should conduct our ward congress next Saturday. Registration will begin from now. If the ward congress is conducted on Saturday, the Saturday that will follow, we can also conduct local government congress, and the Saturday that will follow that one on August 18, we can conduct state congress.

“We need to conduct the congresses on time so that we would not contravene the guidelines set by INEC. It is not that we are in a haste, but time is no longer on our side with barely eight months to the general elections.

“By the grace of God, things will fall in proper places. I urge you all to cooperate with the leadership as we go through the process. Let us be more committed than we did in the past.”

  • Oyo APC loses lawmaker to PDP

A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Ibadan North II state constituency, Mr Olusegun Olaleye has make good his decision to dump the ruling APC and joining the People’s Democratic Party formally as he attends the party’s ward meeting.

Olaleye described the switch of allegiance as “a return to Canaan, the promised land”

The lawmaker, who had on June 28 disclosed his decision to dump the APC, said his decision was based on the “bastardisation of the ideals of Lam Adesina that he believed in, in the current APC in Oyo State.”

Speaking at the Ward 11, Ibadan North Local Government, where he was received by the PDP Chairman of the local government, Mr Seun Adelore, Olaleye said he went astray in the APC but was back to the party that will form the next government in the state.

According to Olaleye, the leader of the PDP in the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, held the “ark of governance in the 2019 election in the state”, describing the PDP as a moving train which boasted of huge followers across the state and good leaders like Senator Ladoja, Chief Sarafadeen Alli and Senator Femi Lanlehin.

He urged the people of the state, particularly the constituency to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) so as to greatly determine who rules them in 2019.

Other state lawmakers who accompanied Olaleye to the event include Messrs.  Ademola Ige, Fatai Adesina and Niyi Adeoye.

Adelore, the party Chairman in the local government in his remark, declared that the PDP in the state was poised for huge victory at all levels of government, in the 2019 election. He described the PDP as a big and accommodating party that all residents of the state should belong.

The event was also witnessed by large supporters of the lawmaker who also decamped to the PDP with Olaleye.

  • Oyo director’s absence stalls Ladoja’s money laundering trial

The absence of a director in the Oyo State Government Civil Service on Monday stalled the trial of former Governor of the state, Rashidi Ladoja, at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Ladoja for allegedly converting N4.7billion from the state treasury to his personal use, eight years after he was first arraigned on the offence.

Prosecuting counsel, Mr. Olabisi Oluwafemi said he was unable to bring his next witness to court because he was on a state assignment.

He said: “Our next witness is a director in the service of the Oyo State Government. He is currently leading the Oyo State team in a meeting with the World Bank. The meeting is ongoing in Lagos. That is why he is not here.

“I will be praying My Lord for an adjournment; the matter is for today, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“He is available in Lagos and he has assured me that he will be available on Tuesday.

Defence counsel, Messrs Bolaji Onilenla and Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, did not object to the request for an adjournment.

Ladoja was charged along with Waheed Akanbi on eight- count charge of money laundering and unlawful conversion of public funds.

EFCC accused them of converting N1,932,940,032.48 belonging to Oyo State to their personal use through the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account of a company, Heritage Apartments Limited, despite knowing that it was proceed of crime.

The prosecution said Ladoja removed £600,000 from the state coffers in 2007 and sent it to Bimpe Ladoja in London.

Ladoja also allegedly bought an armoured Land Cruiser jeep with N42million for himself, using public funds.

EFCC said he converted N728,600,000 and another N77,850,000 at different times in 2007, and allegedly transferred N77, 850,000 to Bistrum Investments Limited, which he nominated to help him purchase a property named Quarter 361 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The alleged offence, EFCC said, contravenes sections 17(a) and18 (1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004 and punishable under sections 14(1), 16(a) (b) and 18(2).

Ladoja and Akanbi pleaded not guilty to the charges.

  • Ladoja’s trial adjourned to March 19

Ladoja’s trial adjourned to March 19

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday adjourned the trial of former Oyo State Governor, Chief Rasheed Ladoja, till March 19.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned the case after the prosecution counsel called its fourth witness.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Ladoja for allegedly converting N4.7billion from the state treasury to his personal use.

He was charged along with Waheed Akanbi on eight- count charge of money laundering and unlawful conversion of public funds.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ladoja was governor of Oyo State from May 29, 2003 to January 12, 2006 when he was impeached.

The Appeal Court in Ibadan declared the impeachment null and illegal on November 1, 2006.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision on November 11, 2009, and Ladoja returned to office on December 12, 2006.

    He, however, lost a 2007 re-election bid.

The witness, Managing Director of Fountain Securities, Mr. Obakola Daisi, was led in evidence by prosecuting counsel, Mr. Oluwafemi Olabisi.

Daisi said he was the official stockbroker for Oyo State Governments’ portfolio of shares sold in 2007.

He said bidders for the portfolio included City Securities, Spring Capital, Deep trust and Mcleans Securities, adding that Mcleans emerged the preferred bidder.

The prosecutor then asked the witness if the second defendant was part of the bidding process and he replied “yes.”

The witness said an executive assistant to Ladoja, Adewale Atanda, requested that drafts be raised in the name of Fountain Securities.

Atanda had earlier testified that Ladoja allegedly bought cars for lawmakers to prevent his impeachment, adding that the former governor gave directive that Oyo’s shares be sold.

He said N634million, which was part of the commission and profit realised by stockbrokers handling the shares’ sale, were used as slush funds to prevent Ladoja’s impeachment.

The witness said the N634million was delivered to him by the stockbrokers.

Atanda said he removed N180million from the sum, which he had earlier borrowed and spent on Ladoja’s instructions during the heat of the impeachment saga.

Part of the N180million, he said, was the N80million he obtained from Wema Bank Plc, which Ladoja used to purchase 22 vehicles for Oyo State lawmakers to prevent his impeachment.

Justice Idris also fixed March 20 and 21 for continuation of trial.

  • Court summons Oyo official in Ladoja’s trial

Court summons Oyo official in Ladoja’s trial

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday directed Oyo State Government to send one of its officials to tender a document in the trial of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Ladoja for allegedly converting N4.7billion from the state treasury to his personal use.

He was charged alongside one Waheed Akanbi on eight -count charge of money laundering and unlawful conversion of public funds.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned at the instance of Akanbi’s lawyer, Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), who requested that an Oyo State government official should be summoned by the court to tender some documents as exhibits.

According to him, a document supplied to the court by the Oyo State Government, was crucial to his client’s defence.

He urged the court to summon the official to appear in court for the purpose of properly tendering the document as an exhibit.

Ladoja’s lawyer, Mr. Bolaji Onilenla, did not oppose the application for adjournment.

Ladoja was Oyo State governor from May 29, 2003 to January 12, 2006 when he was impeached.

The Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan on November 1, 2006 declared the impeachment illegal.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision on November 11, 2006, and Ladoja resumed office on December 12, 2006.

He, however, lost a re-election bid in 2007.

Justice Idris adjourned the case till Monday when the official is expected to appear in court.

  • I have enough reasons, but won’t depose Olubadan – Ajimobi

I have enough reasons, but won’t depose Olubadan – Ajimobi

The Governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi has said he will not depose or sanction the Olubadan of Ibadanland despite having enough reasons to do so.

The governor who noted that the office of the governor is higher and above other titles in the land noted that, he will never allow the situation to cause any acrimony between himself and the monarch whom he referred to as a father.

The governor gave the assurance during a meeting of with the traditional council in the eleven local governments in Ibadan, urging the council not to be discouraged but extend a hand of fellowship to the Olubadan.

Some of the royal majesties in attendance at the meeting include the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Olakeleyin Owolabi, the Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Eddy Oyewole and Ashipa Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe.

The others are, the Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, and the Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Amidu Ajibade.

The governor maintained that he was well aware that all that is going on the palace is an indication that the Palace has been hijacked by a former Governor Rashidi Ladoja and his like who are bent on taking the state back to the gory days.

Noting that the shooting which occurred at the palace during an installation ceremony, Monday, was stage-managed by those he described as drowning politicians, the governor stressed that he will not allow the former governor disrupt the peace being currently enjoyed in the state.

He said, “Like I said, all the relevant sections of the 1959 chieftaincy declarations are very clear on the powers of the governor viz-a-viz the traditional rulers and the administration and particularly sections 26 and 27 empower the governor to sanction any erring oba.

“But as I have said before, you must use power with caution, particularly when it comes to traditional institutions. I am a respecter of that institution. I sincerely believed that considering the relationship that I have with Kabiesi, the Olubadan of Ibadanland as a son, as a brother to my late father, as the Aare of Ibadanland of which he (Olubadan) honored me with that title, I will never do anything to denigrate that position of Obaship or go to the extent of sanctioning him by removal or suspension or something else. Afterall, he is an old man and he is my father.

“We will continue to talk to him. The only unfortunate thing here is that some failed politicians, particularly Ladoja and his likes have taken over the palace and they are doing things that Baba himself will not even aware nor approve of. So we understand the dynamics. The Press Secretary of Baba Olubadan used to be the Press Secretary of Ladoja and he is still there. Some of the Assistants and aides of Baba are known members of Ladoja’s party.

“The baba that is on the throne is my father and I will not do anything that will disgrace him and denigrate his stool. I am happy the obas know the enormity of the powers of a governor. The law had it that, if the governor sees that what a monarch is doing can cause chaos, the governor has the power to depose such king.

“And if anyone is going around the town waving and parading himself around the streets and market at a time like this, that means he wants to scatter the town and cause chaos. If the governor invites a monarch to a meeting and the monarch failed to turn up and such king is saying he was told to sleep or rest somewhere, he could be removed, at least it is the government that is paying him.

“Who bestowed the crown and staff of office on the monarch? Is it not the government? But you see, when a person is in a position as such, he shouldn’t wield his powers every time, particularly against someone who one claims to be his father and someone who is old and more so when you know that some people are really behind it. And we know it is Ladoja.

“I have found enough reasons to depose him, but I will never do it. If he likes, let him go to the radio or television to abuse me, I don’t care and I will never use that against him. He is enjoying the fact that he is my father, he is enjoying the fact that he is the Olubadan. But Olubadan is not the state governor. This Oyo state, the governor is still the head and leader. My gentility is not cowardice but I am just being careful.  I am giving you the assurance that I will not remove him. Sooner or later, he will understand better.

“So, with all intents and purposes, the Olubadan palace has been taken over by Ladoja and his followers and what he could not achieve through the ballot box, through democracy, through elections, he wants to achieve through the palace and he will fail like he has failed in all attempts. And what he is doing now is the desperation of a drowning man looking for ways to cause civil unrest, but we will not allow him.

“He is not above the law. He was a former governor,  that is it. I am the current governor. I will be former governor in another term. We must allow the government to run, it is not his duty to try to cause civil unrest in the society, we will not allow him.

“What happened in Obas palace, reminded us of what had been done before, they went to late Baba Adedibu’s house over the bridge to be shooting at Baba Adedibu, his benefactor, the person who puts him there. Later on, they came to Akala’s office to shoot him, it is the same style. At another time they went to Akure to be shooting and they killed Akala’s assistance. We know.

“And all that happened on Monday also, we know he is behind it, he may say we should prove it but we know he is behind it. Because how do you go to a place and four people will come, policemen were in the palace and so many security in there and nobody apprehended them and nothing happened and people inside the palace still sat inside and later they came. We are not fools. We know that has been stage-managed. We have information and we thank God that Ibadan people are behind us. The whole Ibadan is behind us except few Politicians.

In their separate remarks, the monarchs at the meeting thanked the governor and appealed to him not to use the strength of his power to sanction or address the matter.

Oba Lekan Balogun said, “If anyone likes it or not, how we live this life, we are building history. What is done in recent times and like what you have always done is great. Honestly, you have been an architect like they have always portrayed you on billboards around the town. The things you do, I know it is God that is giving you the wisdom and it is a great history-making event. It is indeed a great history making event because it is something that had been done in places like Ekiti, Ondo and even Lagos and other Yorubaland. In one essential respect, we did not cut Ibadanland into pieces like it is done in other places, Olubadan still remains the owner of Ibadanland.

“Even with what we have done, we still remain where we were. I still remain the Otun Olubadan just like others in the Council but those who don’t understand think there are many kings in a town. As we pray and do all the needful to get Ibadan state if eventually it is granted, are we going to have only one king? If God grants that we have Ibadan state, are we going to have one king?

“The only two things that we did with the recent reform is the nomenclature of Obaship that is added to our title. We have not changed from our ranks as Otun, Balogun, Ashipa and the rest in the Olubadan-in-Council. The second is fashion. If I don’t use my normal Abetiaja cap, I will use my crown. Please, how has that hurt the interest of the Kabiyesi, his Imperial Majesty?

In the whole of this town, he is still the only Imperial Majesty but only two people oppose what the governor did. Those that don’t understand are really many and those that have it on the mind to destroy the city. They are the ones that always want to be known and seen as the only one that knows it. And aside from them, no one else knows how to do. Only two groups oppose what the governor has done.”

The Maye Olubadan, Chief Adebayo Akande in his remarks recalled that he was the one who initiated the idea of reviewing the chieftaincy laws less than a year that Ajimobi assumed office.

He said, “What the governor has done is good. I am the first person who wrote a letter to all the Ibadan Elders that we should do a review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy laws. Chief Akinyele was the one who wrote a book and I was the chairman of the launching committee with Basorun Kola Daisi was the chairman and after the launching, we all read the book. When I got home, I called Chief Akinyele that the book, as good as it was, it would lead to the review of Ibadan Chieftaincy laws and he agreed that I should write a letter to all the chiefs and we met at Ibadan House for a meeting and Chief Daisi was made the chairman of the review. Afterwards, we took it to the governor. It wasn’t the governor that started the review, but we know we cannot do any review without the governor.

“We must thank the governor for his political courage. If not that we have our son who has the political courage, all that we are doing won’t be possible. There are some people who are always saying they want to do this and do that, we only see it in the books up until it was too late for them.

“We must thank God that we have a governor who has the courage to do whatever he wishes to do. There is no time that since we now have the council of Obas, there is not time we won’t have the extended council of obas because only 8 people doing the council of obas may not be appropriate. In due course when all these dust settles, but I am not counting all these as crisis, because we must thank the governor that we have that if he had wished to use the full wrath of his powers, we won’t be saying all these today but we will also beg him not to use all his constitutional powers on the matter because if he does that, those not entitled to sympathy will get sympathy.

The meeting was also attended by all the traditional chiefs and obas across all the local governments and local council developments in Ibadanland.
