    Aregbesola: Nigeria in serious crisis

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola alerted Nigerians to the serious danger that lurks around with the ceaseless Boko Haram bombings.

He said last Friday’s bombing of the Central Mosque in Kano proved beyond reasonable doubt that the nation is in the throes of a life-threatening crisis.

A statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication, quoted Aregbesola as speaking at the weekly prayer of Nasrullahi -il Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), Osogbo Branch, where he joined other adherents to pray for Nigeria and Osun State.

”The Friday bombing of Kano Emir’s palace’s mosque has proved ultimately and beyond any doubt that this country faces daunting challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

”Condemnable as the act is, yet it baffles one that a lot of us still deceive ourselves by reading religious colouration to this whole violence.

”I do not believe that a Muslim, who is a true Muslim, can do this to a Christian, let alone a fellow Muslim hiding under the guise of promoting his religion.

”It is painful to hear that the places of worship are no longer safe places for our people.

”It indeed saddens the heart that people would go to prayer on a Friday or Sunday and there and then in the Sanctuary of God meet his death in the most grievous manner,” Aregbesola said.

According to him, what the nation needs is fervent prayers to rescue it from the clutches of Boko Haram.

He called on the people of the state to be cautious and careful in their daily activities so as to prevent the violence from spreading to the state.

Aregbesola identified market places, motor parks and other places of social gathering as prime targets for heinous crimes by the insurgents, advising people to be vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the security agencies.

    Aregbesola thanks Osun people

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said Nigerians have demonstrated their capacity to stand by and support any administration committed to their welfare.

The governor thanked the people for their“impressive turnout” at last Thursday’s swearing in at the Osogbo Township Stadium.

He said the people made an impactful statement of affirmation that the governor they voted for on August 9 was the one being inaugurated.

In a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Semiu Okanlawon, the governor said he was appreciative of those who made the inauguration a success.

The governor said he was elated to see All Progressives Congress (APC) national and states’ leaders, members and well-wishers.

Aregbesola noted that he was impressed by the conduct of the crowd, who came out to make the ceremony an eventful and a memorable one.

“I wish to express my joy and appreciation to all who blessed us with their presence at the inauguration of our second term in office.

“Beginning from artisans, market women and men, professional bodies, associations, corporate organisations, diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, religious leaders and organisations up to national leaders of our party, words are not enough to express our appreciation.

“That crowd could only be interpreted to mean one thing: That the outcome of the August 9 governorship election was the true reflection of the wishes of our people and a complete triumph of their wishes.

“It is a demonstration of the fact that our government in its first four years, had worked with the people and changed their conditions as never witnessed before our advent. We are, therefore, committed to doing more.”

“We thank God and rejoice with the governor and his family, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and all citizens.

CBN empowers Osun small businesses with N2b

The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele on Monday said the people-focused programmes and policies of the Rauf Aregbesola administration since inception have established him as “the strongman of Osun politics’.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Development and Finance, Mr. Paul Nduka Eluowe, the CBN chief said the polices had raised the state to a higher pedestal.

He spoke at the official ceremony for the disbursement of N2 billion CBN Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Fund  (MSMSEDF) and the distribution of the second batch of 22 mini-buses, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The scheme is a partnership with the CBN. Under the CBN’s N220 billion MSMSEDF, the N2billion secured by Osun is already being disbursed.

Emefiele said the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) are essential ingredients of growth for any serious developing country.

He priased the governor for formulating policies and programmes that have economically and financially empowered the people of the state.

The CBN boss urged the governor to ensure that 60 per cent of the N2billion  given to the state go to women and two per cent to the physically challenged people in the state.

He said: “I am overwhelmed by the number of people present at today’s event. It shows that you are the strong man of Osun politics.

“Your programmes have shown that you are loved by your people with this massive attendance. I hope you will continue to be the strongman of Osun.

“I am not surprised that  majority of the people in attendance are women. The CBN believes that women are supposed to be empowered to unleash their potentials.”

Aregbesola, in his address titled: Marching onto greater development heights, said his determination to drive the state to a prosperous height was borne out of genuine commitment to take the state to the height of socio-economic and industrial development.

Aregbesola said his administration is conscious of the fact that the success of any development enterprise was dependent upon the active involvement and participation of the people.

He said Osun, with carefully thought-out policies, programmes, conscious mobilisation and proper organisation of the people, would continue to grow.

The governor added that the most effective ways of making people the driving agents of development is to economically and financially empower them, and then allow them to handle the rest.

He said:  “We thus decided to come up with various economic empowerment schemes in order to give our people the economic wherewithal and the financial enablement to make them job-creators and wealth generators in a manner that will be beneficial to all and sundry.

“In order for the programmes to have the widest coverage for maximum outcomes, we have decided to spread the net to include the people in the lower rung of the socio-economic ladder – the small traders, the market women, the artisans, the transporters, the small-holder farmer, and the craftsmen and women among others.

“It is for this reason that we have established the Osun Micro-Credit Agency which was officially inaugurated on July 9, 2014.

“It was aimed at ensuring easy access to credit facilities by operators of micro, small and medium scale enterprises, particularly those in the informal sector of Osun economy.”

The state Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Wale Bolorunduro, said Osun was the first state in Nigeria to get N2billion from the CBN to improve MSMEs, adding that the money was a product of financial engineering.

He maintained that 50 per cent of the money is expected to be used for agriculture and commerce.

Bolorunduro promised that the loan would be judiciously used by the beneficiaries.

“Osun is the first state to have assessed and secured the N2billion loan for CBN for the purpose of development, he said.

  • Aregbesola insists on regionalism

    Aregbesola insists on regionalism

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said for true federalism to thrive, Nigeria must advocate regional government to enhance development.

Aregbesola said this while delivering the convocation lecture of the University of Ibadan (UI) entitled:” Federalism, Democracy and the future of Nigeria”.

He said though Nigeria practices the federal system of government, it lacks federal structure as a major property of democracy.

He maintained that democracy and federalism are Siamese twins.

“We can have democracy without federalism but it is unthinkable to have federalism outside of democracy.

“This is because federalism requires the properties of democracy for it to be practicable. These are constitution, rule of law, restraint on government powers, respect for and observance of the rights of citizens, independence of the judiciary, respect for minority rights and so on.

“Nigeria has experienced the best era between 1952 and 1966, a period when regional government was practiced, which made Chief Obafemi Awolowo hold sway as the best performing politician.

“We need to reawaken ourselves to how the prevailing anti-federalist attitude is precipitating problems for our democratic growth and national development.

“The best period of our nationhood was when federalism thrived. Chief Obafemi Awolowo presided over a phenomenal development of his region, broke many firsts and established a 50-year education gap between the West and the rest of the country.”

For the nation to attain true federalism, the governor listed some criteria which include: restructuring the federating unit; devolution of powers; fiscal federalism.

“My take has been and still remains that each geo-political zone should control its resources with certain percentage paid as tax to the central government as was the case in the First Republic.

“Each state or region should have its own appellate system up to its own supreme court.

“The court system is unitary and not conducive for genuine federal practice. There is need for fundamental restructuring of the military. There should be a regional based army but with central control, just like in India.”

  • Deaf but not disabled

    Deaf but not disabled

Afolabi Dahunsi , a deaf advocate, speaks on his activities as founder and president of Deaf Supporters Group (DSG), clocking 50 and his recent appointment as Special Adviser by Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola. He spoke to Gboyega Alaka through his interpreter.

Afolabi Dahunsi stands tall today as a champion of deaf people in Nigeria. Of course he is also deaf. He’s been deaf since age five, after a major illness robbed him of his hearing capacity. But rather than disappear into the rank of other deaf or people with hearing impairment, who’ll just take whatever comes their way or live life accepting just about anything the world would concede to them, Dahunsi chose a long time ago to stand up to his right, take his best shots at life’s opportunities as they come and make the best for himself in a world that is harsh enough even for the hearing.

Such is his spirit that in 1986 and at just 22 years of age, Dahunsi broke free from a paid employment in Lagos, to register his company, Dahunsi Enterprises and delve into the world of import and export, dealing in clocks, stoves and the likes. In no time, he’d established his capability despite his disability, and soon earned more trust and confidence in the wider business circles. Soon after, became a contractor with First Bank and his restless nature soon drove him to meeting with the likes of the Late MKO Abiola, late Alao Arisekola and Umaru Shinkafi, whom he proudly announced, “became my friends.”

Lest he forgot, Dahunsi frantically tapped his interpreter to inform our team of how he also worked with the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, during the second republic, adding that the day he died remains one of his saddest. His experience with Chief Awolowo, inculcated in him an interest in politics that he says has refused to go away, such that he is today recognised in mainstream political circles in Lagos and around Western Nigeria geopolitical zone, as a voice and a rallying point for the deaf and other people living with hearing impairment. His Deaf Supporters Group, which he founded to seek development assistance and training in various skills and vocations as well as co-ordinate and harness the interest and aspirations of all people living with hearing impairment is also at the fore-front of advocacy and politics, well recognised, well-regarded and well respected.  And his activism has not gone unnoticed, as he was recently named Special Assistant to Osun State Governor, by the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola himself.

To underline his involvement in progressive politics, Dahunsi clocked 50 in April this year, but said he differed the celebration “because it fell into the thick of Governor Aregbesola’s re-election campaign.” He recalled that his relationship with Ogbeni Aregbesola dates back to his days in Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s administration in Lagos. “I and my Group members have the good fortune of having close political relationship with him since his time as DG of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Campaign office at Sunday Adigun Street. Ikeja. We have kept our relationship going through those years till today. We were active participants in all political campaigns and meetings and his Excellency is one of those APC candidates that we actively campaigned for and supported at all occasions.”

Dahunsi also revealed that his group has always been politically active in Progressive parties, citing how they started since the days of the now defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), MKO Abiola and the Hope 93 campaign. Thereafter, they shifted allegiance to the Action Congress (AC) and now the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was therefore no surprise that when he finally decided to belatedly celebrate his golden jubilee last week at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, a part of the city literally stood still, even if it was for a few hours. Members of the Deaf Supporters Group, were also there in large number to make the event somewhat of a carnival. So also was a cross section of the larger society, who deemed it imperative to honour a man well deserved of honour.

Says Okikiade Adeyemi, his long-term friend and partner in the advocacy on the occasion of his birthday, “Dahunsi is an icon of deaf people aspirations. With him, you have to take deaf people affairs seriously and with dispatch, otherwise our ‘Icon’ will give you the treatment that will be a lesson to you and others of your disposition.”

Indeed Dahunsi’s philosophy is that “if you give respect to hearing people and treat them courteously, why can’t you do the same to the deaf person?”

Commenting on life at 50, Dahunsi said “it is a landmark worth celebrating,” adding that “the secret of my life is trust in God, confidence in my abilities and readiness to learn new things.” He spoke of his unending interest at improving in knowledge and a huge faith in other people with whom he interacts on a daily basis.

He also revealed his strong conviction that every problem has a solution; his unwillingness to ever take no for an answer, which have culminated in his lion-heart and readiness at all times to help others get things done. Most importantly, Dahunsi says being recognised among his peers is a great motivation for him, adding that this is mainly due to the grace of God and partly because of his diligence in whatever he embarks on.

In his words, “being a hearing-impaired is not the end of one’s life. I strongly believe that there is ability in every disability. And since no condition is permanent, I believe that there is a better tomorrow. I just have to be steadfast and focused on my life.”

Indeed the better tomorrow might just have come knocking, as Dahunsi prepares to take the oath of office as Special Adviser in Ogbeni Aregbesola’s cabinet. Without hesitation, Dahunsi says his appointment as special assistant to the governor is an opportunity, saying “I’m ready to serve my people and country by discharging my duties satisfactorily. It is a call to more and higher services to both my disabled people community as well as the general society/public.”

He also said the appointment will avail him the opportunity to further “prove that there is ability in my disability. Yes I can and will perform creditably as SA to his Excellency by the grace of God.”

A pacesetter, Dahunsi formed the Organisation of Deaf Businessmen & Women in Nigeria (ODBMWIN) to further the interest of his kinds in the business world in 1988. He recalls that his venture into forming the NGO gravely affected his savings, owing to various expenses incurred organising meetings and programmes, but he never relented until it became officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. He revealed that it was the ODBMWIN, which has now grown bigger, that gave birth to the Deaf Supporters Group (DSG). His qualities and doggedness at leading and pursuing the group’s interest has also ensured that he’s been returned as president in every election the organisation has conducted. The Deaf Supporters Group at the moment has its office on Kakawa Street (old Daily Times office), well equipped with state of the art IT equipment, with which it trains members of the group, produce bulletins and carry out its various advocacy campaigns.  The organisation especially has a white American lady, Erica to thank for the equipment.

Born on April 7 1964 in Igbaja, Kwara State, Afolabi Dahunsi’s health problem that resulted in his deafness ensured he never tasted primary school education until he was eleven (1975). He recalls his parents’ efforts at ensuring that he got his hearing ability back, as they took him all over the medical facilities in and outside Kwara State, to no avail. Of course, he was inevitably condemned to a school for the deaf. After primary school, he had a taste of secondary school education before migrating to Lagos to learn business. He got his first paid employment opportunity in 1985, at Mam Nigeria Limited, where he worked as a clerk. He quit in 1986 to venture into the business world, from where he navigated his way into advocacy and activism.

Dahunsi is married to Bosede, who also suffers from hearing impairment, but proudly announced that “our children are normal hearing persons. They have learnt to communicate with us in sign language and now serve as interpreters whenever we have to communicate with our hearing neighbours and friends.”

Osun Tribunal: PDP, APC reduce witnesses

    •Oyinlola appears for Aregbesola

Attorneys appearing before the Osun State Election Petition Tribunal have agreed to reduce their number of witnesses.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Iyiola Omisore, are challenging the victory of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The petitioners’ counsel, Chris Uche (SAN), said his clients have agreed to reduce their witnesses from 1,000 to 500.

Aregbesola’s counsel Akin Olujinmi (SAN) said he would trim down his 600 witnesses appropriately.

APC’s counsel Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) said his 605 witnesses would shrink after the close of the petitioners’ case.

Former  Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola was in the legal team, defending his successor’s victory.

Oyinlola, who wore a black suit and white shirt, arrived at the state High Court, with other attorneys at 8.50 pm.

Unlike other PDP leaders, including the party’s former state Chairman, Sunday Ojo-Williams, who greeted the former governor, Omisore tried to avoid Oyinlola.

Entering the venue at 9.15 am, Omisore went to take his seat in the west wing of the court room without exchanging pleasantries with the former governor.

Justice Elizabeth Nkpejomi ruled that the tribunal would not terminate the trial of the petition filed by Omisore, until the substantive matter before it had been heard.

The tribunal chairman ruled on the application by the governor seeking to dismiss Omisore’s petition because the reply to the respondent’s reply and the pre-trial were filed out of the time set by the Electoral Act, 2010.

The panel chairman noted that the application had to do with the jurisdiction.

She said the issue of jurisdiction was fundamental but in cases where time was of the essence, the application to terminate the petition and the main petition should be heard together.

Justice Nkpejomi said the respondents would not suffer any miscarriage of justice, if the application was heard with the petition.

The tribunal moved quickly to the PreTrial Conference (PTC) immediately after the ruling where parties agreed to file issues distilled for determination today while further proceedings were adjourned till tomorrow.

Attorneys agreed on the documents to be tendered with consent while those that would be disputed were also to be listed with the processes to be filed before the tribunal.

Olujinmi had noted that if the tribunal were to follow Uche’s proposal of five minutes cross-examination for witnesses, not more than one question would be asked from every witness before the time allocated would lapse.

Justice Nkpejomi then adjourned the petition till tomorrow to rule on the various contentions raised during the Pre-Trial Conference.

  • ‘Aregbesola didn’t ask for rerun’

    ‘Aregbesola didn’t ask for rerun’

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has denied that its candidate in the August 9 governorship election, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, asked the Election Tribunal for a rerun of the election.

The party was reacting to a report published on Monday, which stated that Aregbesola filed a prayer for a rerun of the election, if the tribunal upheld Omisore’s baseless application.

The APC said there was only one prayer made by the governor which stated that: “Whereof in all the forgoing premises, among others, the second respondent denies in their entirety all the prayers of the petitioners as set out in paragraph 59 (i-v) on pages 174 and 175 of the petition and will urge the tribunal to dismiss the petition with substantial costs for being unmeritorious, frivolous, vexatious, ill-conceived and an abuse of court process.”

It also declared that it would be “standing logic on its head for a respondent to ask for an alternative prayer in any reply.

“The responsibility for an alternative prayer rests squarely on the shoulders of the petitioner, which is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“So for the publication to report that Aregbesola, (who is the defendant), made an “alternative prayer for rerun of the election”, is the propagation of falsehood.”

The APC called on the public to disregard the story.

  • Aregbesola: Fear God, make sacrifices

    Aregbesola: Fear God, make sacrifices

Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has urged Muslims to exercise the fear of God and be ready to make sacrifice for the nation.

In a statement by his Director Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the governor said two things were clear in the decision of Prophet Ibrahim in sacrificing his son.

Aregbesola said: “One, he did so to fulfill a promise to God should he be blessed by God. The second is that there was nothing too much or too dear to Ibrahim for him to lose in order to fulfill a pledge.

“If we look at it very critically, these two things are the virtues lacking in modern day life creating the present topsy-turvy atmosphere that pervades everywhere.

“If those in government demonstrate enough fear of God; resolve to fulfill promises kept and ready to give up anything no matter how dear and costly in order to fulfill a promise, most of the problems of bad governance, injustice and insensitivity to the plight of the common man would vanish.”

He lamented most politicians would go to any length to make promises to hoodwink the electorate.

Saying that nothing should be too much to give up for good governance, Aregbesola said despite the very meagre resources accruing to the state, his government has sacrificed everything to ensure that life gets better.
