  • Aregbesola advocates change of attitude

Former Osun State governor and minister-designate, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday stressed the need for a change of attitude among Nigerians as prerequisite to have the desired change that will yield development in the country.

Aregbesola spoke in Lagos at the sixth African meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, a public symposium, with the theme: Creating a New Humanity in Nigeria and Africa: Lessons from Cuba and Venezuela.

It was organised by Nigeria Movement of Solidarity with Cuba in collaboration with Alimosho Local Government Area.

Represented by Bisi Yusuf, the minister-designate noted that the desired development in the country would start from the grassroots by every individual having a change of attitude in their approach to all things.

“The change of attitude starts from the home. But it is alarming that our social system in the country has broken down because the family ties are no more. Nigeria can survive by creating a new social order in men and women who would be of changed attitude. Such will birth clean environment, obedience to traffic laws and many things will change for good in the country.”

According to him, the beginning of having a good system in Nigeria starts from the home.

Aregbesola said: “If you are from a good home, no one will appeal to you to do a bad thing. The home each individual comes from will determine what they do outside the home. Everybody blames politicians, but if you are not an armed robber at home, you will not be in public office and become one.

“We need to create value tendencies in the children and parents must create the time to train their children. We should stop blaming the politicians. If they are at fault, throw them out with your ballot paper; if they bribe you, don’t collect it.

“The power you have is your ballot paper, which you must not allow anyone to buy from you.”

The keynote speakers and Ambassador of Cuba, Carlos Trejo as well as Venezuelan Ambassador David Velasquez, emphasised that unity is needed to solve Nigeria’s problems.

It was a fiesta of sort at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja (MMIA), Lagos State, when the politicians celebrated one of their leading lights.

The crowd displayed banners with various inscriptions, such as “Welcome home and congratulations on your nomination as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”; “We are proud of you, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola”; “AregbeMandate 100 per cent”, among others.

Those at the airport to receive the former governor were Alhaji Abdullahi Enilolobo, Bisi Yusuf, Makinde Rasheed Lanre, Kehinde Joseph, Usamat Akinbile-Yusuf, Jude Idimogu and Alhaji Tajudeen Olorunwa.

Others included Adeleke Ipaye, Alhaji Yisa Y., Sesan Sobande, Alhaji Abdulwahab Ajulo, Prince Adewale Bello and Gbenga Falegan.

The party faithful, who dressed in white and orange caps and headgears, sang various political lyrics showing appreciation to God, the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and President Muhammadu Buhari for finding the former governor worthy to be a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Leading the mammoth crowd, Lagos State APC Organising Secretary and Apex Leader in Alimosho Local Government Area, Alhaji Abdullahi Enilolobo said he was delighted to receive “his boss” who had been out of the country before his nomination.

“I am elated and happy to have led these teeming members of our great party, the APC, to receive my boss, my leader and my father, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who has just been nominated a minister in the Next Level government of President Buhari.

“I am optimistic that Ogbeni Aregbesola will deliver on any portfolio he handles as he is so vast in human, society and economic development.

“Let me use this medium to express appreciation those who came out in their large numbers to receive ‘Oranmiyan’. This shows we are committed to the progress of our party and leaders.”

The crowd later moved in a convoy to the Bourdillon Street, Ikoyi home of Asiwjau Tinubu to show their appreciation to him.

Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has congratulated Aregbesola for his nomination as a minister by President Muhammadu Buhari.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Adeniyi Adesina, said the governor described the nomination of his predecessor as worthwhile.

Praising the President for nominating Aregbesola, the governor said the nation would gain immensely from the wealth of experience and depth of knowledge Aregbesola would bring to the table.

  • Mohammed, Fashola, Onu set to retain cabinet seats

There were strong indications last night that between 12 and 15 ex-ministers will join President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.

It was learnt that the ex-ministers’ names are on the list which was reportedly submitted to Senate President Ahmed  Lawan on Wednesday.

But there was still a pall of uncertainty on the size of the cabinet.

The President has the constitutional right to have a 36-man or a 42-man cabinet.

The President is said to have decided to retain some of the ex-ministers on merit.

Those speculated to be on the list last night are ex-Ministers of Justice and AGF Abubakar Malami ( SAN); Adamu Adamu( Education); Hadi Sirika ( Aviation); Zainab Ahmed (Finance); Aisha Abubakar (Women Affairs); Lai Mohammed ( Information); Babatunde Fashola (Works, Power and Housing); Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation); Mohammed Musa Bello( FCT); Suleiman Adamu Kazaure (Water Resources); Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu (Science & Technology); Solomon Dalung (Sports & Youths Development) and others.

Although Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, former governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Niyi Adebayo (Ekiti) and Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos) were also being speculated last night to have made the list, none of our sources could confirm such speculations.

The sources confirmed that some ex-ministers, such as Adebayo Shittu (Communications) and Okechukwu Enelamah (Trade and Industry) lost the battle to return to the cabinet.

A government source said: “I know that the two women ex-ministers are returning to the cabinet. We have a few others who have really added value that the President will be retaining.

“It is not a total overhaul, which you are anticipating. What the President promised was to leave sustainable legacies in his second term.”

As of press time, it was difficult to ascertain whether or not the President of the Senate had received the ministerial list.

A principal officer of the National Assembly said “Lawan dropped a hint that he will receive the list on Wednesday”.

Another source said: “I think the list is already with the Senate President and some officers but they said it will not be made public until Thursday.”

A source in the Presidency simply said: “All things being equal, the Senate will receive the list on Thursday morning. “

It was uncertain whether or not the President will retain the 36- member cabinet in his first term or expand it.

Section 147(1-3), provides that the President should have no fewer than 36 ministers at one per state.

The section reads:   “There shall be such offices of Ministers of the Government of the Federation as may be established by the President.

“Any appointment to the office of Minister of the Government of the Federation shall, if the nomination of any person to such office is confirmed by the Senate, be made by the President.

“Any appointment under Subsection (2) of this section by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of Section 14(3) of this Constitution:

”Provided that in giving effect to the Provisions aforesaid the President shall appoint at least one Minister from each state, who shall be an indigene of such state.”

Lawan confirmed on Wednesday that the list of ministers will be out this week.

President Buhari had promised to appoint into his cabinet those who would help him to implement his “Next Level” programmes.

Lawan spoke during plenary on Wednesday, following a Point of Order by Senator Albert Bassey Akpan (Akwa Ibom Northeast).

Akpan, who spoke under personal explanation, prayed the Senate to mount pressure on Buhari to transmit the list to the chamber.

The senator reminded his colleagues that the Senate would embark on its annual recess within the next two weeks.

He stressed the need for Buhari to transmit the list before the recess.

Akpan said: “Mr. President, in view of the yearly long recess the Senate and the House of Representatives will embark upon in two weeks, there is need to urge President Muhammadu Buhari to forward the much expected ministerial list to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

“This is very important because if such list is not made available for the required legislative attention before we embark on the long recess, there will be no ministers and, by extension, the federal cabinet for the President to work with till September.

“Making the list more urgent now from the President before our long recess, is the fact that if it is not made available, the concerted effort being made by both arms of government to return to the yearly budget cycle of January to December will be defeated.

“On this note, I call on the President of the Senate to inform President Muhammadu Buhari of the need for the ministerial list before we embark on recess.”

Lawan said: “Let me, on the strength of this motion, inform the Senate that the Executive arm of government is working very hard on the ministerial list.

“In fact, the list, based on information at my disposal, will be forwarded to us by the President before the end of this week.

“May I, therefore, appeal to us all to be ready to make the necessary sacrifice in terms of sufficient time to be spent in carrying out thorough screening and confirmation of appointments of the expected ministerial nominees.”

  • Aregbesola, Yayi hail Lagos APC chieftain Enilolobo

Immediate past governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, and the the lawmaker representing Lagos West Senatorial District in the Green Chamber Senator,  Solomon Olamilekan Adeola,  have eulogised the virtues  of  Abdulahi Ayinde Enilolobo, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

Speaking at  a symposium to celebrate the party chieftain’s Golden jubilee, the duo, described Enilolobo as a humble,  dedicated and honest family and  party man.

Senator Yayi said: ” Hon Enilolobo means everything to me. He is a political juganut in the setting of Lagos, he is a seasoned administrator who is blessed with a loving mother.

“He has contributed immensely to the success of the party especially in Alimosho. If he wanted any political office, he would get it but he prefers to remain a party man. He has touched many lives and would satisfy others before himself. He has always  been there for everyone of us.”

Expressing concern about the relationship between the country’s growing population and the lean  revenue accruing to the nation,  Aregbesola said: “We dont remember that we are poor here in Nigeria. If we have a deep thought, we ought to have a day of weeping every month.

“If we don’t work harder to improve our fortunes, we would continue to be poor. In 2017, Brazil had a population of  approximately 200 million people almost about what Nigeria had. That year, Brazil had a revenue of about $600  billion and a budget of $700 billion.  Nigeria in that same year made $13 billion  and a budget of $23 billion. Are the two countries equal?

“Today, OPEC allowed Nigeria to extract and sell 2million barrel of crude oil per day but we don’t get that quantity. Even if we get 2million barrel per day and if the price rises to $100 per barrel, it means our income will be $200 million.

” If you divide this by 200 million people, it amounts to  $1 per every Nigerian.   We have to check our population by practicing birth control. If we don’t address this, we would have huge problems to deal with. We would also need every able bodied person to work.”

  • I donated eight years’ pay to Osun, says Aregbesola

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has revealed how he voluntarily forfeited his official salaries totalling N114, 743,197.4 million for the eight years he was governor.

Aregbesola spoke during a lecture he delivered at the 65th Anniversary and Old Students’ Re-union of Manuwa Memorial Grammar School (MMGS), Iju-Odo, Ondo State, where he emphasised the importance of productivity in the life of a nation and at the level of individuals’ economy.

The former governor, who warned on the dangers of living a life-style not commensurate with one’s income, noted that the way to bankruptcy and inability to meet essentials needs stepped from when an individual either lived above his or her income or consumed all incomes as they came.

In his view, the lure to live above one’s income often come from lust to acquire what one may not need or what one could not afford.

Aregbesola, who urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to always distinguish between needs and desires, made reference to himself when as governor, he said all his needs; including food, housing, cars and all others, were borne by the state, just as he had no school children he had to sponsor.

The former governor said though acquiring new houses, cars and other related property might be desirable as a governor, but added that they were no longer of necessity to him and that what was noble and honourable for him to do was to donate his salaries for the eight years he was governor for the good and benefit of the government and people of the state.

Unlike some of his former colleagues, Aregbesola said he built no house in Osogbo, Ilesa, Lagos or in any other place throughout his two terms tenure as Osun governor.

He said sticking to only essential needs either at the level of individuals or a country would enhance investment and productivity.

To promote the culture of investment and productivity and inculcate them in the minds of youths, the former governor recommended that Investment and Productivity be taught as a subject in Nigerian schools from the elementary to the tertiary level, just as he admonished workers generally to emphasise on productivity more than on salary as a right.

He lamented that one of the banes of low productivity in the country was that workers always pay more attention to salary as a right without considering productivity as a right or as an obligation.

The former Osun helmsman in company of some alumni of the college, among whom are Major General Olu Bajowa (retd), a former Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, inaugurated some teaching-learning enhancing projects sponsored by the college’s alumni association.

A re-constructed chalet, where Aregbesola lived as a student in 1971, was named after him and he pledged to regularly maintain it.

The former governor bemoaned the state of education, but gave kudos to the alumni association for its contributions to the development of the college and urged them to double their efforts.

He noted that in doing this, they would be contributing in no small measure to the emancipation of the children of the poor masses. He noted that with the support of the alumni to boost education, children of the poor would be able to identify their individual passions and develop the hunger to achieve them.

General Bajowa extolled the leadership quality of Aregbesola, especially his passion for selfless service to mankind as demonstrated by the forfeiture of his salaries for eight years and more strikingly, his identification with the alumni and financial contributions to the college regardless of the fact that he only did forms One and Two in the school.

MMGS, named after the late world renowned surgeon, Dr. Samuel Manuwa, is one of the oldest 100 secondary schools in Nigeria.

It was established on February 22, 1954.

  • Verdict on Osun governorship poll cannot stand, says Aregbesola

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has described the judgment of the Election Petition Tribunal last Friday, which nullified the election of Governor Gboyega Oyetola as very strange and unknown to law.

Aregbesola, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr. Sola Fasure, said the report of the split judgment came to every watcher of political events in the state as a rude shock.

In the statement entitled: “This judgment cannot stand,” the former governor said the people of the state and the government have the highest regards for the judiciary and would keep having high regards for the revered institution.

Aregbesola, however, regretted that the tribunal’s majority judgment was strange to law and common sense.

He said the majority judgment, as delivered by their Lordship, did not support the cause of electoral justice and might constitute the death knell for properly conducted elections.

Aregbesola said the people rejected the majority judgment and believe that it would not stand scrutiny at the appellate court.

The statement noted that the majority judgment, which held that the rerun election conducted in seven polling units on the September 27, 2018, was illegal, null and void, was equally shocking and amounts to a travesty of justice.

He said the government would appeal the judgment, adding that the verdict would be upturned.

The former governor wondered why elections in 17 polling would be annulled when there was no evidence of any act known to render them null and void in an election petition such as over-voting, non-accreditation, ballot box stuffing among others.

Aregbesola contended that concern for substantive justice should have dictated that since the results from the 17 units were duly signed and adjudged by INEC to be authentic, there should not have been any controversy over there validity.

He lamented that the tribunal has effectively disenfranchised the legitimate voters in the 17 polling units and rendered the election undemocratic.

The statement said: “In nullifying the elections in the 17 polling units, the majority judgment predicated it on what is regarded as ‘substantial non-compliance’ with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010. The said non-compliance, according to the judgment, borders on the failure of INEC’s appointed presiding officers to record accreditation and ballot accounting on the result forms in the 17 polling units.

“There was no evidence of any act known to render election null and void in an election petition such as over voting, non-accreditation, ballot box stuffing etc.

“This much was highlighted in the dissenting judgment of the Chairman of the Tribunal in disagreeing with the majority decision.

“It must be noted that APC and its candidate were not accused of any electoral malfeasance in the 17 polling units. Rather, INEC, a common agent of PDP and APC (and indeed, all the political parties), which neither of the parties has control over was merely accused of not complying with its manual for the election, when the presiding officers appointed for the election failed to make the entries.

“Therefore, the most relevant question one would pose here is: should the tribunal allow APC to suffer as a result of the mistakes or omissions occasioned by the INEC staff? Certainly, no!”

The statement added: “Equally shocking are the reasons advanced by the two justices. They advanced the proposition that elections in the seven polling units were cancelled by the state collation officer. This was not the case. There were no elections in the seven polling units, and if there was any, the onus was on the petitioners. This onus was not discharged in anyway as no results was tendered.

“The state collation officer in compliance with the margin of lead principle rightly reasoned that the outcomes of the elections could not be determined without conducting polls in the affected elections. Hence the commission’s decision to conduct supplementary elections in line with these principles.”

The ex-governor urged APC members, “supporters and lovers of justice, who have been outraged by this verdict, to be calm and unruffled”.

He insisted that the verdict cannot stand.

“As they say in law, you cannot build something on nothing,”Aregbesola said.

Youths protest panel’s judgment as Oyetola preaches peace

A Group of youths under the Osun Concerned Citizens yesterday protested judgment of the Osun Election Petitions Tribunal on the September 22, 2018 state governorship poll.

Last Friday, a three-man tribunal ruled that the People’s Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was the winner of the poll.

During the peaceful protest, the youths, in their hundreds, marched round major streets of Osogbo, the state capital, from Ayetoro junction via Old Garage and Okefia to Olaiya area.

The youths, who carried placards with various inscriptions like “Oyetola remain our governor”, “We voted for Governor Oyetola”, “We cannot be intimidated” among others, caused a traffic gridlock for many hours.

Addressing the crowd, the group’s General Secretary, Comrade Yaya Ademola, said the protest was aimed at sensitising the people about issues associated with the governorship election.

Ademola, who noted the lacuna in the tribunal’s ruling, was optimistic that the Court of Appeal would overturn the tribunal judgment.

He said any attempt to distort the majority votes would be  resisted.

But, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, while addressing the protesters, urged the people to keep the peace as they await the final judicial pronouncement on the governorship election.

He said the people, while expressing their views on the tribunal judgment, should exercise caution, adding that he believes in the judicial process.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Adeniyi Adesina, quoted the governor as saying: “I believe that the judicial process should be allowed to take its course. I have hope that we shall be vindicated and our mandate, which the people freely gave us, will be reaffirmed.

“Let us all be law-abiding as we keep hope alive.”

  • Buhari: Task of nation building continues, says Aregbesola

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola yesterday said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at last Saturday’s presidential election marked the beginning of a new zeal at rebuilding Nigeria.

Aregbesola, through his twitter handle, said that the end of the election should alert Nigerians to the need for a new resolve to continue to build Nigeria to take it to the Promised Land.

While congratulating Nigerians and President Buhari, Aregbesola said: “Nigeria has once again demonstrated to the world that its democracy is well and alive.

  • Delta is for APC to lose in 2019 – Aregbesola

The Chairman of the National Reconciliation Committee of the All Progressive Congress (APC) South-South Zone,  Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has boasted of his party’ chances in the Delta gubernatorial election in 2019, saying”Delta State is for our party to take”.

He appealed to the party faithful to sheathe  their sword and embrace peace to claim the governorship position in 2019.

He spoke in Asaba, Delta State Capital on Friday at a reconciliation meeting between the various factions in the party in the State.

Ogbeni Aregbesola who was flanked by party stalwarts including the governor of Niger among other committee members said that  success was directly proportional to how well the members manage their differences.

According to him, “If we insist of having our way in all areas, it will scuttle our chances”

The chairman explained that victory of the party is also assured in Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Bayelsa states except for Rivers which he said, he can not stick out his neck because there are issues.

Aregbesola advised the factions to consider the efforts of the presidency in resolving the crises.

The chairman urged members not to despair in the unlikely event that the party loses in the state saying, “the party at the center will still benefit all loyal members”.

The different groups presented their position papers to the committee which they hoped would help in resolving the differences.

One of the points canvassed for is the 50-50 percent sharing of positions at the state and federal level.

In his document, chairman Prophet Jones Erue said the party has made appreciable progress in resolving all grey areas that almost marred the party chances of winning the 2019 election in state.

Defectors from the Modi Sheriff faction of the PDP led by Dr. Cairo Ojougboh expressed bitterness that the 14,000 members that moved into APC have been sidelined while the late Sen. Francis Okpozo group led by chief Hyacient Enuha was of the view that the structure of APC in the state be dissolved immediately after the general election and a fresh and credible congress should be conducted.

But gubernatorial aspirant of the party, Prof. Pat Utomi insisted on pursuing the legal option, adding that his action was without prejudice to ongoing peace efforts.

  • Osun monarchs hail Oyetola for starting his first day with prayer

Two traditional rulers in Osun State, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, and the Oloba of Oba-Ile, Oba Adekunle Oyeyemi, have commended Governor Gboyega Oyetola for starting his first day in office with prayer.

They said he had started well and prayed for him to have an “happy ending” like his predecessor in office, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.

The Oluwo hailed Oyetola for demonstrating a sense of preparedness within his first two days in office.

The Oluwo, who addressed reporters after the interdenominational prayer session at the Governor’s Office to usher in the Gboyega Oyetola administration in a Osogbo, Osun State capital, said his comportment and punctuality at his first official assignment as governor is “a   mark of a leader ready to serve.”

According to Oba Akanbi,  punctuality of Governor Oyetola in commencing the prayer session at 10:00am prompt was encouraging, therefore advising public servants and political office holders to respect to emulate him.

Describing the immediate past governor, Mr. Aregbesola, as a teacher, who had laid a good foundation for his students to build on and surpass, the Oluwo said: “I hope to see an improvement on the digital  infrastructural facilities initiated by the former Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. Aregbesola is great, Oyetola will be greater.

“The interdenominational prayer session to usher in his administration commenced at 10:00am as scheduled. He came at exact time and many people missed the program. Punctuality is the soul of business. He started well and I pray he should end well. That is the one of the marks of a leader ready to serve. He is prepared and I have the hope that he will record laudable achievements.”

He equally appealed to the state’s machineries to exercise fear of God as manifested in the virtues of Oyetola, hoping to see improvement on the infrastructural facilities initiated by the former Governor of the State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregebsola.

“As the chairman of welfare committee of Osun State Council of  Traditional Rulers, I am calling for inclusion of monarchs in governance. I can assure our governor of our support as traditional rulers. I pray that God will give him the wisdom to lead the state and build on the foundation of the immediate past administration of Rauf Aregbesola.”

Meanwhile, the Oloba of Oba-Ile in Olorunda Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Adekunle Oyeyemi, has charged the people of the ancient town to rally support for the Gboyega Oyetola administration in the interest of future of the state.

Oba Oyeyemi prayed for success of the new administration, stressing the need for people of Osun to support Oyetola in order for him to be able to consolidate on the gains of the immediate past administration of Rauf Aregbesola.

He also called on indigenes of the community, the Oloba-Ile in-Council and members of the Oba-Ile Descendants Union (ODU) to appreciate the efforts of the former governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for his “unparalleled achievements” in his eight years in office.

In a statement, the monarch said Aregbesola in a letter dated November 5, 2018  approved the elevation of the Oloba of Oba-Ile to the position of Deputy Chairman of Osun State Council of Obas.

The statement read in part: “By itself this act of elevating Oloba-ile within my two years on the throne is significant and the position to which the elevation places Oloba-ile on the Osun State Council of Obas is not only significant and huge but it also attest to the level of good working relationships we maintained with Aregbesola’s government and our traditional institution in the state.”
