Ago Palace road ready in three months

The General Manager, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Li Bing, yesterday said the rehabilitation of Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos will be completed in three months.

He spoke when the road was inspected by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ajibade Bade-Adebowale.

Bing said the firm’s major challenge is the weather, nothing: “If the weather doesn’t stop us, we will complete it before Christmas if not, it may be delayed. We have also been able to grade some parts of the road but the rain has been disturbing us from work. At this stage, we need people’s support and understanding so we can finish as planned. The road situation is bad now because the drainage system is blocked but we will improve on it.”

He said alternative routes had been provided for motorists to beat the traffic gridlock.

The Permanent Secretary said it was the last phase of the three roads marked for rehabilitation on the Okota-Isolo axis.

He said: “The reason the road has been delayed is the downpour and the landlords who took the state government to court but that has been resolved. This road is very important because it also serves as alternative routes for motorists heading to Festac and Badagry. Residents should cooperate with CCECC because for them to have a good outcome, they must go through hardship.”

Bade-Adebowale urged residents to cease dumping refuse in drains to avoid flooding and damaging the roads.

A resident, Mrs Dorcas Ihevba, prayed for early completion of the road.

She said: “Though it hasn’t been easy walking on the road but I know it will soon be over because we have suffered enough.”

A shop owner, Chris Dave, said he is also praying for the completion of the road.

He said: “When I came to shop this morning (yesterday), I was overwhelmed because I have suffered on this road. I can’t count the amount I have spent on tyres but I know all that will be over. Though it has affected my business; I know after the completion, everything will fall in place.”

A tricyclist, who gave his name as Tijani, said: “I am really glad about this because most times I spend my day at a mechanic workshop repairing my Marwa. If the road is completed, I don’t have to spend my day there. It is a good development.”

Crystal Palace Vs Man City: Iheanacho ready for first start

    • Hails the influence of Silva,Yaya,Aguero, Nasri

Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho is determined to break into the Manchester City starting XI following his cameo appearance as a late substitute against Watford just before the International break.

The 18-year old was a late minute substitute for Raheem Sterling who netted one of the goals as the Manuel Pellegrini side romped to a 2-0 win, maintaining their 100% start to the 2015/16 season.

Iheanacho, who shone in pre-season tour of Australia and Vietnam, was promoted to the first team this summer and the former Golden Ball winner at the 2013 U-17 FIFA World Cup is confident of doing well for the Citizens if given the opportunity.

“It’s been going great, I’ve been training with the first-team and the guys have been great with me and I’m really enjoying it,” Kelechi smiled as he responded to questions on Manchester City’s official website.

“It was a great feeling to make my debut against Watford. I was hoping to come on – the manager introduced me and I was very happy to come on.

“I’m hoping for more Premier League minutes – I have to work hard in training and then hopefully the manager will introduce me again so I can show what I can do.”

He went on to discuss his relationship with the big boys in the team and how it has benefitted him as a young lad.

“David Silva is a great player, a top player – high level with a lot of experience,” Iheanacho declared.

“He’s had an unbelievable start but that’s no surprise to anyone – we all know what a good player he is and it’s good for me as a striker to have someone like that in the team.

“I’m learning new things every day in training – it’s been a dream come true playing with these players.

“With Sergio, Yaya, David and Sami – it can only improve you as a player to play with these guys.”

Iheanacho has been listed by manager Manuel Pellegrini in the squad that will travel to Selhurst Park to face Chelsea conqueror’s Crystal Palace on Saturday.

  • We are ready to take on Africa – Ahmedu

We are ready to take on Africa – Ahmedu

Mark Mentors’ coach, Peter Ahmedu has said his team is ready to take on Africa after defeating bitter rival, Kano Pillars 80-62 in the finals of the DStv Basketball League on Friday.

Peter told SportingLife  that winning the league is one of the targets of the Abuja-outfit, revealing that the next vital step is to at least get to the quarter final of the FIBA African club championship after retaining their Zone three title, it won last year.

“I am excited to have achieved our first aim by winning the league title with a bunch of dedicated players. The next step is to retain our title at the FIBA Africa Zone Three Championship and qualify to play in the African championship, where we intend to erase last year’s disappointing ninth place finish by getting into the quarter finals,” Ahmedu said.

He praised the players for putting up a good fight in the game and confessed that he never expected a wide-margin victory. “I was expecting a nail-bitting finish just like last season when we lost at the buzzer.  But when I saw that they were no match to my team in the third quarter, I told the players to take full advantage of Pillars’ lapses and I am happy we won.”

The coach also revealed that the president of the club, Igoche Mark has promised the players and officials that they would share the prize money, noting that the players would also get more reward when the team is hosted today.

He also thanked the Lagos fans for their support, saying that it contributed immensely to the victory. “I am happy that the fans believed in us and stood by us against Pillars. It was unbelievable and massive. It really helped us and I am very grateful to the fans.”

  • Mikel: I am ready for Nigeria

Mikel: I am ready for Nigeria

    • Chelsea star offers self for Eagles matches if invited

Chelsea of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi has revealed that he would continue to make himself available for the Super Eagles in as much as he is invited for future matches.

Mikel Obi was overlooked by the former Eagles’ head coach, Stephen Keshi in the Gabon 2017 AFCON qualifier against Chad and many football analysts have predicted the player’s steady decline and oblivion from international football because of his omission.

But a close source of the footballer has told SportingLife that Mikel has categorically stated that he would be available for Eagles’ future matches irrespective of either the new head coach, Sunday Ogorchukwu Oliseh visited him in England or not.

The source also told SportingLife that the  Nigeria International takes the pride in representing his country and has offered himself readily for Eagles next AFCON qualifier against Tanzania and other future matches.

Oliseh, who was handed over the reins of the senior national team recently is presently in London to have useful deliberations with some Eagles’ players in the English Premier League ahead of the AFCON qualifier with Tanzania in Dar-es-Salam next month.

It was reported in the media that Oliseh held talks with Victor Moses after Chelsea’s FA Community Shield loss to Arsenal last weekend and that he would also meet with Mikel Obi among others before returning to Nigeria on August 14.

The source further hinted that Mikel had been earlier disturbed by the situation regarding his future at the Stamford Bridge based club and that now that it has been resolved that he would spend the remaining two seasons of the contract with the former UEFA Champions League champions he is open to playing for Nigeria.

“Mikel has told me that he would always be available to play for Nigeria any time he is called upon and that he was disturbed by his future situation in Chelsea before now and with that resolved there is nothing pre-occupying his mind again.

“Many thought that because he was omitted from the Eagles’ game against Chad that his future in the national team is in doubt. He was actually spoken to by the former boss that he didn’t call me because he wanted to give other players the chance to shine too.

“He is staying in Chelsea till the end of his current contract in 2017 for now and he is looking forward to the new season with calmness.”

The source further said that Mikel was not happy to lose the FA Community Shield title to Arsenal after they were pinned 1-0 by Alex Chamberlain first half strike last Sunday and that he has forgotten about that loss and he is concentrating on the club’s first game of the season against Swansey City at the Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Akwa United: We will be ready for Nasarawa United

Akwa United have intensified build up to their tough away tie to Nasarawa United with two friendly matches which they have used to shape up their preparedness for the Glo Premier League Week 11 tie with the Solid Miners on Sunday in Lafia.

The Promise Keepers were held by Enyimba International FC who reportedly paraded their first 11 with Mfon Udoh the only notable absentee in the encounter while the Uyo side were also battled to another draw by a non league team from Port Harcourt.

The Media Officer of the club, Uwem Ekoh told SportingLife that the friendly matches were meant to keep the team in shape ahead of the commencement of the league on Sunday.

He said the Promise Keepers would be ready for the challenge posed by home team Nasarawa United adding that the Uyo side would be energised to improve on the draw secured in Lafia last season.

“We played two friendly matches last week and even though both ended in draw against Enyimba and a Port Harcourt based club, we achieved our aim of keeping the players together and getting set for our game with Nasarawa United.

“We got a draw there last season and I don’t see any reason we won’t improve on that this term. We won’t deter in our resolve to get something in Lafia,” Ekoh told SportingLife.

Akwa United are 14th on the log with 11 points from 10 matches.

  • MANU GARBA BOASTS: Flying Eagles are ready

MANU GARBA BOASTS: Flying Eagles are ready

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba talks about his team’s chances at the U-20 World Cup, his fears as well as his expectations leading up to New Zealand 2015.

How was the training camp in Nurnberg, Germany?

GARBA:  It has been a very good training site, there are no distractions. So, it has been very good for our preparations for the World Cup.

You beat Hoffenheim U-23, Nurnberg U-19 and SC Freiburg U-23 in all three training matches you played in Germany. What is your assessment of the team’s performances in these games? Did it bring out the best in your team?

I can say the first game against Hoffenheim was very, very competitive as they are a good side. I would say I was very impressed with the way the boys played as they were playing together after a long time.

I was happy with the way they played, the way they kept the ball and they scored five fantastic goals despite the fact that we had a few mistakes especially in our recovery and failing to convert some chances. These are some of the things we are now trying to address before the World Cup.

The second game we played was better than the first, although the opposition was not as stiff as that of the first game. But we were able to perfect all our movements in that game. We scored some fantastic goals again and there was an improvement in the ball circulation.

Taiwo Awoniyi played 35 minutes in the first game and 45 minutes in the second game and he scored six goals. This means we are getting there attack-wise, but we still need to work on our defence. This is where we need to work on before the World Cup kicks off.

The match against Freiburg was our best game because we created so many chances even though we failed to convert most of them.

What exactly do you need to work on in the defence?

The mental speed of the players – they do recover in good time, but they often fail to do the marking when it matters most, to close up on the opposition. But I believe before the World Cup, the defence will be a lot tighter because we will surely work on those areas. This is the major weakness of this team.

You have announced your final 21-man squad for the World Cup. Are you satisfied with your selection?

I am very, very satisfied because it has been very, very tough getting to this final squad. If you look at players like Abdullahi Alfa, who played every minute at the last World Cup, he’s out of the team, so too Samuel Okon, Muazam (Alhassan Ibrahim), who has been on good form lately.

But above all, I will beat my chest any day to say that this was the best team we selected from this set of players. This is because we took the selection departmentally.

The midfield is the main strength of this team but with the inclusion of Isaac Success, Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon, the attack will be very, very deadly. It will be difficult to get an attack that will be as deadly as that of Nigeria.

So, coupled with the compactness and strength of the midfield, I believe this is a very good squad and we just need prayers for the boys to win every match at the World Cup. That’s our aspiration.

We’re not just aiming at the cup, but we want to win every match and by so doing, the cup will be ours. We don’t want to toy with any match.

This is not to say that all the other teams in New Zealand do not have a chance of winning the tournament. But we are very, very optimistic that as African champions and with the strength in depth in this team, we’re much stronger than the team who played at the African Youth Championship in Senegal.

    How much stronger?

A player like Kingsley Sokari was not there (in Senegal), a player like Iheanacho was not there, a player like Success was not there, Moses was not there, Wilfred Ndidi was not there and Nwakali wasn’t there.

These are players who can play for any team any day once they are fit. The team are much stronger than that at the AYC.

I believe many people will be working with the team they saw at the AYC, but they will be surprised to see different players, who are much better in terms of technique and exposure.

When they pick up, this team will be unstoppable throughout the championship.

You have been quoted as saying that ‘if you don’t make it to my training camp, you are out of my final squad.’ But we see Success, Iheanacho and Moses Simon were not in Germany, yet they will be New Zealand for the World Cup.

I said that because the players who have been training with us understand our philosophy and have undergone all the trainings, but you can’t take away anything from Success, who is playing for a club like Granada and he is injury-free and doing well.

Moses is the most important player at Belgian club Gent. Kelechi has been on superb form. He is one player who can be relied upon if he is free of injury and I believe he has recovered from that injury.

I believe their inclusion in the team will go a long way in adding more strength to the team. We are also not saying these players will come in automatically to the first team, they will be coming in gradually for them to find a synergy with the other players.

The fear of some is that these players have not been with the squad for many months and so they will not be able to blend with the group quickly. Do you share such fear?

No. I don’t have any fear because these players have been with us. Even Moses Simon was with us in the early part of the U-17 team before he went on to play for the U-20 team. He may not know our philosophy, but for Kelechi and Success, they know how we play right from the U-17s. Kelechi even played the qualifiers.

All the same, it will not be difficult for Moses because he played in the same academy in Kaduna with Musa Yahaya and he is a striker who knows when and how to move. It will be easy for him to adapt.

We have two, three training sessions together (in New Zealand) and they will again know how we play and what we want them to contribute to the team.

Two, three trainings will be enough for them to blend?

They are all coming from competitions and so you can’t fault their fitness level. I am more about them integrating with the rest of the team.

The language of the game is simple – If you have the ball, before you release it, you have to look up and see the movement of your player. If the other player has the ball, you have to move to a vital space to receive the ball.

I believe getting that cohesion will not be very difficult because two of them, Kelechi and Success, have been with this team, while Moses will adapt very quickly.

We will sit them down to show them what we expect them to do. I believe they will adapt because they are young players and very, very intelligent. They will not get into the team in the very first match, they will sit on the bench and observe and whenever we need them, they will come on to do the damage.

The Flying Eagles are drawn against five-time champions Brazil, North Korea and Hungary in the first round. What do you know about these teams?

Sincerely speaking, we know very little about them, but then everyone knows the Brazilian philosophy – they play the way we want by moving the ball from the rear, they don’t kick long balls. This style is good for our own pattern of play.

The Hungarians are from Europe, they will play a more direct game, while the Koreans are very, very fast and they like moving the ball.

But we are a team who do not want to be diverted from the way we play and so we want the opponents to play the way we want. We have really worked very, very hard and I believe by the time we are in New Zealand, we will be ready for any team in the world.

Your opening match is against mighty Brazil, who have won this competition five times. How are you looking forward to that game and how crucial is it in your aspiration?

I respect all the teams who have qualified for this championship and that includes Brazil, who have been good at this level, but believe you me, Brazil is Brazil and Nigeria is Nigeria.

Brazil have won the World Cup several times, but Nigeria have got silver twice and a bronze.

At U-17 level, we are rated no.1 in the world. And half of the team to New Zealand are from the last U-17 team. We are a united team who have conquered the world at U-17 level and we have now been joined by other players who are more technically balanced than some of them from the U-17s. So, I believe we are ready to take on any team.

But I also know that the first match in any tournament is the most important and so we will do all we can to pick up the maximum three points against Brazil, which will go a long way to motivate the team in subsequent matches.

I recall that Mexico came to the last U-17 World Cup as defending champions and they had not lost a match for two years. But against a Nigerian side, who did not play a test game for a month, we defeated them 6-1.

This is not to say we will be overconfident. We are confident in ourselves to beat Brazil in our opening game. We are very ready for the World Cup.

You said you will go to the World Cup as African champions and after that you said you wish to make history as the first Nigerian team to go all the way and win the U-20 World Cup. Are we on track in this regard?

Yes, I said before the AYC that I wish to go to Dakar to qualify as African champions. I still believe we can go all the way to win this U-20 World Cup for the first time for Nigeria.

Nigeria have reached the final twice and we got a bronze in Moscow (1985). This time we have a team who are very focused, determined and want to go out there and win the World Cup for Nigeria for the first time.

But we cannot do that by merely talking about it, we intend to take every match as it comes. So, the most important game now is the match against Brazil.

We will approach every game with caution, although the knockout stages are the most difficult. We want to win every game and by so doing, we will be champions. This is our major objective at the World Cup.

All we need is for Nigerians to keep faith with this team, for them to pray for this team and on our part, we will do everything humanly possible to bring the cup back to Nigeria and Africa.

When, and not if, you win the World Cup, what will be the next step for you and the team?

I am a firm believer in destiny and I always put the country first. The most important thing for me now is to make sure we go to the World Cup and accomplish our mission of winning the tournament. Whatever comes after that, God knows what I will be and when I will be.

Wherever he takes me to, I will remain grateful to God Almighty because he determines everything. Right now, God knows the team who will win the World Cup – it is our hope and prayer that it will be Nigeria.

We have come a long way, we have worked very hard throughout the qualifiers, managing ourselves in all aspects, but our major focus has remained to win the World Cup. With God on our side, we can do it.

Could you pick a particular player from this very talented team who will shine at the World Cup?

Right from the qualifiers, Taiwo Awoniyi has been very consistent and he has improved match after match. He is a player who gets into a scoring position better than any other player.

I believe if he stays calm, he will be one player who will do very, very well at the World Cup. There are some others like Kelechi Iheanacho, who was the best player at the last U-17 World Cup. If he is free of injury, he will hit it very big as well.

There is also Kingsley Sokari. If he listens very well and works very hard, he will have a great World Cup. You cannot forget a player like Moses Simon, who has been fantastic in Belgium, he will be great. I believe the best player and highest scorer (of the World Cup) will come from my team.

With such a presentation of top quality players, won’t you have selection problems?

We have a way we choose our team here – the starting team will be the best players in the week of the match, the players who are injury-free and who are in top shape and the right frame of mind to deliver the goods.

With these 21 players, you can close your eyes and say this 11 will start and they will do well. At times, the bench will be stronger than the starting line-up. Sometimes you win your match from the bench.

There won’t be selection problems because we will pick players who understand each other more, so that the cohesion and the rhythm will go well. Team play comes first before any individual showmanship. We will pick players who are free of injury, players who play together and who are committed to cover for each other throughout the game.

So, is it safe to say this is the best team you have ever worked with?

I believe the U-17, who won the World Cup two years ago, are the best because this team are yet to play in the World Cup.

With the U-17s, we broke so many records – Best player, best goalkeeper, won the fair play trophy and so on. But this team in terms of quality has improved a great deal. We cannot rate them because they have not played at the World Cup yet. This team is the delight of any coach at this level.

We just hope these boys keep their cool, listen to what we teach them and with God on our side, we will win the trophy.

Finally, how confident are you Nigeria will be crowned world champions on June 20?

I am not overconfident, but right from when I was born I do not fear in whatever I do because God has a way for everybody in life. I go into any challenge without fear but with good preparation, I pray very well and ensure the team is united. No matter how good a team is, when there is no unity between the officials and the players, it will affect the team on the pitch.

But this team has been very wonderful. The officials are a team and so in Senegal, despite some problems, we managed ourselves and at the end of the day we won the trophy with a half strength team.

The team have grown in confidence and unity. You could see that even when we announced the 21-man squad, it was just like it had not been announced. This goes to show that we have done a very good job to unite this set of players.

I believe this unity will be for a purpose and God will crown all our efforts for us to create that history in winning the cup for the first time for Nigeria.

Good luck coach in New Zealand.

Thank you and good luck as well to all Nigerians.

  • BONFRERE ready for Eagles again

    BONFRERE ready for Eagles again

    •Wants Keshi sacked

Former Super Eagles chief coach and Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games Gold Medal winning coach, Johannes Bonfrere, has sensationally advised the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to forget about renewing the contract of Stephen Keshi and go for a capable foreign technical adviser if they really desire to return Nigerian football to the enviable position it once occupied in international football.

Bonfrere Jo, in an exclusive telephone interview with REMI SULOLA, praised Keshi for his laudable achievements but stated that he clearly lacks the capabilities as well as technical know-how to take Nigerian football to the next level. Bonfrere is however not rulling out the possibility of coaching the Eagles if the NFF request for his services.

He said: “The rate of Nigeria football has gone down from what it used to be. And it keeps going down more and more. There’s no respect anymore for Nigeria football. Even countries that rate Nigeria football very high and always see them as formidable opponents don’t anymore. And this is very sad.

“Yes, Keshi has achieved some feats for Nigeria. But he has not improved Nigeria football. Like I said, Nigeria football has gone down and no more respect for it too. Before they were scared to play against Nigeria but every team can beat Nigeria now.

“I think Keshi has proven himself. But in this situation now, I’ll say NFF should go for another coach. Or a foreign coach. I think they should look for somebody else. What has he done? Yes, he won the AFCON. Yet, Nigeria football keeps going down under him.

“In my opinion, another coach should be gotten. So, that Nigeria football can be developed and brought up again. For the respect that used to be there playing against Nigeria should be earned again. The pride of playing against Nigeria to be retained.

“Keshi’s technical abilities is not high enough to coach the National team. He was my assistant in 2000 at the Nations Cup. All these you can see in the way Nigeria now play football. That the technical abilities to do it and work with them is not there. If you have a Nigeria team under control to work with in four or more years, you will see that they will play more and more better. But I don’t see that in the past four or five years.

“I don’t know. That’s up to the NFF if they’ll be able to pay whoever the coach is, foreign or local. I can’t really say anything about that. Yes, I’ll love to still coach the Super Eagles. If approached, why not? If they come to me, its then we can discuss terms and conditions. Before an agreement can be reached.

“Yes, the Nigerian football is on a down low. The team spirit is low, the way they play as a team is not good too. Even with the players in Europe, it shows that there’s no technical abilities needed in playing football. For all these to improve, someone will have to teach them how to play as a team, show them the technical and tactical ways to win a game and that needs a turn around of what to do, when to do it and how they must do it. It’s not just about joking and joking with the players.

“I had so many memorable times in Nigeria. It felt like home to me. Never had any bad moments. It was all good memories for me. I have put all the Westerhof’s issue behind me. And I don’t want to talk about it. Let’s just forget it.

“Yes, I am still coaching. I work with upcoming players that wants to play professionally. Bringing them up to that level. That’s what I do now.”

The Nigerian champions have struggled to replicate their outstanding performances in the Nigerian League on the continent and that has left Kano Pillars try on two previous occasions back-to-back without reaching the group stage of the competition. Though a stellar performance in 2009 saw them make a last four appearance – but since then Kano Pillars have struggled.

It looked even tougher at this stage after Kano Pillars conceded four goals away in Morocco, to have any hope of advancing Kano Pillars must score five goals without conceding at all. The media manager of the northern based team, Idris Malikawa spoke to SL10.ng about their current state and how they hope to advance to the next stage.

“We’ve done everything right from our own part and we hope God will help us get the result that will favour us,” Malikawa told SL10.ng.

“We’ve been in closed camping since we got back and everyone in the team is united, focused and determined that to make a difference on Saturday. It looked tough in the human eye but it’s a different situation with God, we hope that the almighty God will give us the result that will see us through,” said Malikawa

After the heavy defeat in Morocco there were excuses raised as regards the weather condition and it looked the like the Nigerian champions are ready to make the most of the opportunities around them.

“The match has been scheduled for 14:00 on Saturday April 4 at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano. We are based here and choose the best time we prefer. The spirit in camp is very high, the boys are good to go but we put all our effort in the hands of God,” Malikawa repeated.

Pillars’ Ogbonnaya ready for Heartland opener

Kano Pillars defender Reuben Ogbonnaya cannot wait for the 2015 Nigeria Professional Football League season to start. He said he has his sights on picking up a win in Owerri against Heartland on match day one.

The reigning Glo Premier League champions will start the defence of their crown when they travel to Owerri for a week one encounter against a Heartland side that want to start the league on a bright note. Ogbonnaya has been a regular in the heart of the Kano Pillars defence since his much-publicised move from El-Kanemi in the off-season.

“I can’t wait for this weekend’s game against Heartland in Owerri. It will be my first game in the league for the club and I want to start on a winning note,” Ogbonnaya told supersport.com.

“We want to retain our league title and getting the three points against Heartland will send out warning signals to our rivals. Pillars want to win everything in sight this season. I think we can do it with the calibre of players the team has signed this season.”

Ogbonnaya featured prominently as Kano Pillars eliminated Al-Malaika of South Sudan to set up a date with Moroccan side Moghreb Athletic de Tetouan in the round of 32 in the CAF Champions League.

The former El-Kanemi Warriors defender said the start of the league will make the team better and they will be fit when they confront the Moroccans.

“I’m quite pleased the league is starting this weekend. It’s a great opportunity for us (Pillars) because match fitness won’t be an issue again,” he said.

“The new players will also blend with the rest of the squad which will make us ready for the next clash in the Champions League. The three points at Heartland is not negotiable. We want to win there and start the league with three points in the bag.”
