    Akwa Ibom: Emmanuel receives church’s endorsement

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, sought divine blessings on Sunday, with the formal dedication of the project to the hand of God.

    The event, which took place at the Qua Iboe Church, Uyo, the state capital, attracted a large crowd of PDP faithful, the business and political class, various political and socio-cultural groups, who came to show solidarity to the governorship candidate.

    Addressing the congregation, Deacon Udom Emmanuel said he did not come to the church to campaign, but led his team to consult and seek Divine blessings in view of the assignments before him.

    His words: “We did not come to campaign because we know that God is with us, and as Christians we must always invite Him to guide us in our aspirations.”

    Drawing inspiration from Psalm 37:5, which says: “‘Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass,”  the governorship candidate admonished everyone to always seek the consent of God in their affairs.

    He assured that as a firm believer in God’s precepts, he was of the belief that without the Divine backing, one’s aspiration is in vain.

    The governorship candidate, who used the occasion to urge all Christians in the state to support God-fearing leaders through the PDP, noted that the party was the only one that placed God at the centre of its activities.

    He acknowledged the prayers of Christians in the state, through their various leaders, saying there is nothing like denominational barriers among Christians in the state, because they all put their trust in God through Jesus Christ.

    Earlier, the Director-General of the Udom Emmanuel Campaign Council, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, enjoined Christian faithful to support the emergence of Mr Emmanuel, adding that he is a God-fearing leader with requisite managerial and intellectual capacity to lead the state.

    Nkanga who traced leadership of godly men from biblical times, called on Akwa Ibom people to unite and elect Emmanuel, whom he described as a man after God’s heart.

    The high point of the occasion was the prayer of dedication on all PDP candidates by the Rev. Ime Usoroh and Elder Okokon Nkan.

    Keystone Bank receives PCI-DSS Certification

    Keystone Bank has received a Certificate of Compliance on the successful completion of the Phillips Consulting assessment on Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS).

    The PCI-DSS is an extensive set of guidelines developed by five of the top global payment card brands, and adopted worldwide by card services providers – Card Issuers, Banks, Transaction Switching Companies and Merchants – to better protect customers’ payment card information from compromise and fraud through increased controls around the storage, transmission and processing of card data.

    Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the Executive Director, Operations & Technology, Mrs. Yvonne Isichei, who stood in for the Managing Director/CEO, Keystone Bank, Philip Ikeazor, said that “Keystone Bank had engaged the services of PCI-DSS Qualified Security Assessors, Phillips Consulting Limited, to guide it through the implementation of the standard and conduct the final certification assessment.”

    She said the result of the assessment is that amongst other things, Keystone Bank achieved the “creation of a restricted Card Data Environment within our network; the identification and sanitisation of card data from the general network environment and Provision of training for our staff on card data security best practices and general awareness building on the PCI-DSS requirements.”

    While presenting the certificate, Mr. Wole Ogundare, Associate Partner, Phillips Consulting had encouraged Keystone Bank to continue to the atmosphere of compliance noting that “Compliance is not a destination but a journey.”

    APC receives fresh defectors in Kebbi

    NO fewer than 250 supporters of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) in Kebbi State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Addressing the decampees at a reception organised to welcome them in Birnin-Kebbi, the state capital, the APC interim State Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku Bunu, said, given the political situation in the state, the coming of the former PDM members would help the APC to win future.

    He therefore, assured them of the party leadership’s commitment to work with them to fortify the APC before the 2015 general elections. ‘’APC has received prominent people and with the calibre of people now in the party, we have full assurance that they would deliver the state and at the Federal level, our aim is for change,’’ he added.

    The chairman explained that, as the party congress draws nearer, the sharing of political offices would not be a problem. ‘’Let us join hands together and fight for the masses,’’ he enjoined the new party members.

    Speaking earlier, the PDM Zonal Vice Chairman (North-West), Alhaji Sani Haruna Zuru, said the aim behind the defection is to fight for the masses and promote the democracy.

    He explained that the PDM and the APC share the same goal. He therefore, urged his members and supporters from the 21 local governments areas to forgive one another and ensure the success of the party. ‘’Let us play politics without bitterness, selfishness; let’s be honest and transparent for the betterment of our new party,’’ he added.

    AMCON receives 25 EoI for Mainstreet Bank

    The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has announced the successful completion of the submission of Expressions of Interest (EoI) phase of the divestment of its shareholding in Mainstreet Bank.

    In a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Communications, Strategy & Research, Kayode  Lambo, said sequel to the earlier comment made by the corporation that the time frame given was adequate for serious interested parties to submit all requested documents, a total of 25 EoIs were received.

    He said this spanned a diverse group of interest which included local and foreign banks, and local and foreign investment groups.

    ‘’It is worthy of note that the number of requests received for this advertisement exceeded expectations and the corporation is impressed with the profiles of the entities,’’ he said.

    He  stated that the bidding process has not yet begun, adding that all successful EoI applicants will be required to submit further information in order to enable the advisers perform due diligence on them.

    The leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has received the sum of N750 million (seven hundred and fifty million naira) being part payment from the federal government for the Super Eagles’ participation in the African Nations Cup beginning in South Africa this weekend.

    SportingLife gathered from the chairman of the finance committee, Shehu Adamu that the bank draft was received on Thursday and lodged into the Federation Account. “I want to confirm to you that the part of the amount required to prosecute the Nations Cup in South Africa has been recived. This serves as a greater boost for the AFCON participation and we are expecting the balance of the money as the game progresses. With this, the team would have nothing to complain about. Their welfare is well secured for the championship,“ he said.

    Adamu also confirmed that the accounts department of the NFF has credited the personal accounts of the Super Eagles’ technical crew members with their salary arrears including that of January. “All the four months outstanding salaries and allowances of the technical crew of the Super Eagles up to January 2013 were paid into their accounts on Monday.” He confirmed that the Chief Coach Stephen Keshi was paid the sum of N20 million, Daniel Amokachi was paid N12 million. Ike Shorunmu and Sylvanus Okpala collected N6 million each.

    National Sports Festival (Eko 2012): Anambra receives 2012 unity torch

    Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State yesterday received the 2012 Unity Torch for National Sports Festival with assurance on total commitment on sports development.

    Obi assured the people of Anambra State that all sectors of the State economy, including sports development will continue to receive adequate attention in line with the State government policy of developing all sectors of the State economy simultaneously as encapsulated in the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS).

    Receiving 2012 Unity Torch on National sports from the South-East zonal coordinator of national sports festival Mr. Stanley Okebugwu, Obi said sports, aside being tool of actualizing national unity, creates employment.

    Okebugwu first handed over the torch to the Commissioner, Mr Edozie Aroh who in turn handed it over to the Governor, thanked the Governor for the huge investment in sports.

    Governor Obi thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for his commitment to sports development, describing sports as a veritable tool for national unity.

    “Besides sports functioning as a tool for national unity, it also contributes to human development, creation of employment and generation of revenues,” the Governor said.

    Recalling the state of sports in Anambra State before he became the Governor, Obi said it was disheartening that as at 2006, sports completely collapsed in Anambra State with the state not having a single stadium, nor were sporting activities encouraged in schools. Schools were built and approved without sporting facility. He noted that with good investment, commitment to sports under his government that all those things have been redressed.

    Earlier, the State Commissioner for Sports and Youth development, Mr. Edozie Aroh commended the governor for his interest in sports development. He reeled out the achievements of Governor Obi on sports to include construction of two mini stadia, restoration of school sports, insistence that all functional schools in the State must have sporting facility and adequate funding of sporting activities which has led to improvement of medal haul (table) in all categories of sporting events in Anambra State.

    Speaking further the Commissioner said the re-awakening of interest in sporting activities among the people of the state are as a result of recognition the government is according to retired sports men and women. “Today, due to the recognition accorded the likes of Emmanuel Okala, Mary Onyali, and Innocent Egbunike among others, the people of the State, especially youths have come to take them as their role models for re-awakening general interest in sports,” the commissioner stated.
