Ogundokun urges Obasanjo, Awujale to reconcile

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, have been advised to settle their differences.

Speaking with reporters in Osogbo, Osun State, a former publisher, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, appealed to the duo to give peace a chance following their hot exchanges on business mongul and Chairman of Globacom Communications, Mike AdenugaJr.

He said they should remember that many Nigerians were looking up to them as leaders.

According to him, there were many channels open to them to resolve their differences other than statements being credited to them daily on the pages of the newspapers.

He advised Obasanjo and Awujale to think of the good things that they had shared in the past.

Ogundokun said he could still remember how Obasanjo intervened and resolved the feud between Oba Adetona and the former Ogun State governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo.

He said: “Both former President Obasanjo and Oba Adetona are respected leaders and they should not forget that all eyes are on them because many Nigerians are looking on to see how they would be able to resolve their differences amicably. I believe former President Obasanjo deserve the confidence of  Oba Adetona before he wrote the book, which is causing between them.

“I suggest to Yoruba leaders to employ the tools of discipline, love and respect for one another before committing any matter to book. Once there is a disaffection as a result of sharp disagreement on issues its wound hardly heals. We should note that leaders in other tribes don’t fight dirty on the pages of the newspapers.”

  • Bayelsa APC to reconcile aggrieved members

Bayelsa APC to reconcile aggrieved members

The Bayelsa State  All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated a 12-member reconciliation committee to resolve its protracted crisis within its rank ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Crisis erupted in the party following the outcome of the last governorship election, which the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Seriake Dickson, won.

APC was further polarised after some members of the executive committee, led by its Chairman, Chief Tiwe Oruminighe, publicly disagreed with the defeated candidate of the party, Chief Timipre Sylva, over  federal appointments.

But, Oruminighe assembled 12 elders at the party secretariat, Yenagoa, and mandated them to take appropriate measures to resolve the problems.

The chairman relieved the party’s ordeal in the last election and blamed the electoral misfortune of the APC to what he referred to as “small carelessness”.

He said: “We have been into some serious issues. We came with a platform promising to change Bayelsa State. We are still on that course. We went to the election and from election we went to the court. We are done with the court.

“We failed the election because of small carelessness because Bayelsans were behind us. We promised Bayelsans that we are going to get it right and I am still promising you that we are going to get it right”.

The party leader acknowledged that after the election, the party was plunged into an internal crisis, adding that there was need to reconcile all aggrieved members to forge a united front.

  • ‘APC aspirants should reconcile’

    ‘APC aspirants should reconcile’

All Progressives Congress (APC)  chieftain Hon Mathew Emiohe  yesterday called on the leadership of the party to reconcile aggrieved aspirants, following the emergence of Mr. Godwin Obaseki as the candidate.

The politician noted that money played a role in the primary, urging the party to avoid the monetisation of the contest in the future.

He lamented that some delegates did not vote according to their conscience.

Emiohe, who is a staunch supporter of Edo Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, who lost the party’s ticket to Obaseki, urged the party to reconcile the aggrieve members and restore mutual confidence.

He said:  “The primary has been won by a party member. I believe that all of us will have to go back to the drawing board and see how we can get the candidate to win.

“The aspirants that stormed out were upset and I don’t blame them because they have spent a lot of money and we have to be very concerned about this because many of them have their followers. I am a staunch supporter of Odubu and he needs to be talked to. I am angry because of the role of money in this primary and it is not good our democracy.

•Party plans to oust PDP in 2019

The lingering crisis that created factions in the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ended.

The two factions have agreed to work together for the party’s progress.

Addressing reporters after the meeting that ended the crisis, APC State Chairman Donatus Nwamkpa said both factions realised their mistakes and agreed to end their differences.

Nwamkpa urged the members to be fully involved in the party’s restructuring at the wards and autonomous communities to enable it face the challenges ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The chairman noted that members were joint leaders of the party at their various levels, adding: “Since we are all leaders of this great party, we should, therefore, not allow it to collapse under our watch.

“We have all agreed to come together for the good of our great party. Therefore, every member is expected to work hard to ensure that we remain focused to achieve results of taking over power in 2019.”

The State Deputy Publicity Secretary, Offor Okorie, said the party’s crisis, which made it possible for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win last year’s election, had ended.

Okorie said: “With this development, the Abia APC is now poised to take over power, come 2019. I advise Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to sit up. Otherwise, the state will be too hot for him and his administration.”

The deputy publicity secretary said the party was determined to play the role of a strong and viral opposition.

He said this would put APC on a strong footing ahead of future elections.

It was learnt that with Nwamkpa as the chairman, the party also elected other officials.

They are: John Ogumka (Deputy Chairman), Dr Emma Aguzie Ndukwe (Secretary), Austin Anyaegbu (Deputy Secretary), Philomina Uzuegbu (Woman Leader) and Gabriel Dimgba (Treasurer).

Others are: Prince Paul Ikonne (Abia South Chairman), Sunday Ogba (Chairman, Abia Central, Onyeoha Chukwu (Chairman, Abia North).

Benedict Godson was elected Publicity Secretary while Chibueze Apugo is Welfare Officer.

  • Can Oyinlola reconcile Oshiomhole, Odubu?

    Can Oyinlola reconcile Oshiomhole, Odubu?

The succession battle in the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has degenerated into a crisis between Governor Adams Oshiomhole and his deputy, Dr Pius Odubu. Can the Oyinlola Committee restore peace to the troubled chapter? OSAGIE OTABOR writes on the burden of reconciliation.

Was there really a crisis in the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) that warranted the setting up of the Fact Finding and Reconciliation Committee headed by the former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola? To Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the crisis was blown out of proportion by those he described as fifth columnists. Some chieftains also saw the setting up of the committee as an attempt to blackmail him and withdraw his support for a governorship aspirant, Godwin Obaseki.

It appears the visit of the reconciliation committee has doused tension among the aspirants. What heightened the tension was the friction between Oshiomhole and his deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu as both of them are not on the same page on who will succeed Oshiomhole. The removal of Hon Victor Edoror as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, the bias of some executives of the APC and threats that the party would lose the election to the PDP, if a popular candidate does not win the primary also aggravated the tension.

The crisis worsened when the convoy of Dr. Odubu was attacked at Auchi, the headquarters of Estako West Local Government. Oshiomhole hails from the local government. Oshiomhole alleged that his deputy wanted to use diabolical means to eliminate him. There was also shooting at Sobe community at a time Obaseki was in the area to campaign.

What the Oyinlola committee gathered, according to sources, was different from the picture painted about the APC in Edo, especially as regards the removal of Hon. Edoror as the Speaker. When the committee met with the aspirants at the APC secretariat, it was an opportunity for them to speak out their minds about the proposed primary.

Issues raised by the aspirants included financial inducement of delegates, increased use of thugs by some aspirants, the need to separate party activities from the aprons of the government and easy access to delegates  by aspirants. Some aspirants also accused the Chairman of the party, Anselm Ojezua and the Secretary, Chief Osaro Idah of being political appointees of Governor Oshiomhole. They said the APC would do well in the state if it was well-funded.

The Chairman and the Secretary denied the allegations.

The youngest aspirant, 37 year-old Blessing Agbomhere, said all the aspirants pledged their loyalty to the party and demanded for a free and fair primary.

He said they also demanded access to the delegates and requested that Ojezua should take charge of the party and separate governance from party politics.

He said: “I told them the governor should see every aspirant as a brother because we made the party what it is today.”

“I spoke my mind and I was straight to the point. I condemned the Odubu attack and I reported that my bill board was removed at the party secretariat because they said I was criticizing the governor.

An aspirant, Ogiemwonyi, said only a strong party structure would bring  peace to the Edo APC.

“The aspirants spoke their mind. You cannot reconcile without talking about the issues underneat. We went as far as talking about the need of separation of powers between the government and the party. We want to have a strong party. We equally addressed inducement of delegates with money, it should be reduced”

“I believe in due process. I believe in the spirit of good governance. We are looking for somebody that has experience.

“My panacea for what will bring peace is we need a strong party that is well funded. A situation where the party can summon the governor like in the days of Awolowo.”

Oshiomhole expressed reservation about the attitude of the national leadership towards the supposed crisis in the state chapter. He said the party leadership has not asked him about problems in the party in the state and noted that informal approach to issues works better than formalised approach.

Oshiomhole, who spoke at a meeting with the committee, wondered why the official language should be ‘reconcile everybody,’ when the most uncouth and vulgar language have been used to describe his person.

He said those beating the drum of war in the APC were defectors from the PDP who want to discredit the APC in Edo.

He said: “The secretariat should check carefully because those making statements always end up with statement that unless the Comrade want to return the state to the PDP. This state cannot return to the PDP.

“We can distinguished between Fifth columnist and genuine APC members. Those fomenting  trouble in APC now could not deliver their wards. I deliver my unit, ward, local government and senatorial district.”

“I hope that you are able to tell everybody, assure Abuja that there is no cause for alarm. I will finish stronger than I started.”

“Be assured of my commitment to the party. Be assured of my commitment to democratic values and I will fight this election as if I were a candidate, regardless of who wins.”

The committee also met with the leadership of the House of Assembly behind close doors and the committee was told in clear terms that the change in the house leadership has no connection with the power play between Oshiomhole and his deputy.

The Speaker, Ativie Elisabeth, and other lawmakers narrated how the plan to remove Edoror was plotted and executed without the knowledge of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

The Speaker said there was no plot to impeach the deputy governor and that the change in the house leadership would further strengthened the party.

At an enlarged stakeholders meeting, Oyinlola warned party members not to work towards finding themselves in opposition political party after the elections

He urged the leadership to resolve their differences.

The former Osun governor noted that the APC won last year’s election because a transparent party primary that saw the emergence of Mohammadu Buhari as the party’s flag bearer.

His words: “My belief until I came was that nobody has done anything that will surpass the achievement of Dr. Ogbemudia. We have a performing governor who has done so much credit to our party, why then do we not want to continue with this trend of achievement by going into the election united and deliver Edo State.”

“It is the only state that is under our control in the Southsouth zone. It is an open secret that governors in the Southsouth have gone to do meeting on how to take Edo. God will not allow that to happen. We have interacted with the aspirants. They came out with what they believe is needed to be done for us to move successfully. All of them are talking about a level-playing ground.”

“We must allow a level-playing ground. That is what is going to happen. God forbid we should not loose election in Edo State. It is not a pleasant thing to be in opposition. That is why I want to plead with our leadership that we must be able to resolve our differences.

“Reports from the state chapter of the party in the last few weeks were not edifying and that the party at the national level was alarmed at the steady erosion of the stability  and cohesion earlier seen in Edo.”

“We are here because our party believes darkness must not fall on this state once again. When you came, you gave every man a reason to believe once again in participatory democracy as the best form of government.”

But, an aspirant, Casely Omon-Irabor, told our reporter on phone that the committee came to fan the embers of disunity by praising the achievements of Oshiomhole.

Omon-Irabor said that some stakeholders at the meeting were invited to insult some aspirants present at the meeting.

He said: “The committee came here to sell Oshiomhole. They were praising Oshiomhole. Some people were brought in to insult everybody.”

Ojezua, said the committee found out that things were not as bad in the party as it was being reported in the press.

He said what they found were symptoms of electioneering campaigns.

His words: “We cannot afford to loose this election. The governor has done very well and the party will rely on the governor’s achievements during campaigns. People must be very careful with the way they speak about the governor”.

A close ally of Dr. Odubu said the committee was able to calm some nerve and peaceful atmosphere within the party.

Eze Ndigbo Akure moves to reconcile with Deji

The Igbo in Akure, the Ondo State capital, are trying to reconcile with the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, after a few days of bickering.

The monarch had accused the Eze Ndigbo, Sir Gregory Iloehike, of insubordination and lack of respect for his authority.

But Iloehike denied the allegation, saying he couldn’t be arrogant to the tribe that has accommodated his tribe for over many decades ago.

Rising from a special meeting of Ohaneze Ndigbo at the palace of the Eze Ndigbo in Akure, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state, Chief Okechukwu Okorie, said the Igbo respect the Deji and would not do anything against his wish.

He said the Igbo in the state are peace loving people, adding that the Ohaneze Ndigbo has started reconciliatory moves with the Deji and palace chiefs to ensure peaceful and harmonious co-existence between the Yoruba and Igbo in the town.

The group described the relationship between the Deji and Igbo as that of a father and his children, noting that the monarch remains the father to all.

He said: “The Igbo are law abiding and we remain good subjects of the Deji of Akure. We can never warn the Deji on any issue, rather he is in position to warn us.

“The Deji is our father and we are his children. Whatever he wants is our wish and we shall continue to obey his directives.”

Okorie, who hinted that the Igbo leaders have decided to reconcile with the Deji, informed that efforts are on top gear to reach out to the traditional ruler.

He urged the monarch to forgive those who might have offended him, adding that the Igbo would continue to maintain the peace for which Akure is known for.

  • Ortom: I’ll reconcile people in 100 days

Benue State Governor-elect Samuel Ortom has said he will focus on reconciling the people in his first 100 days.

He spoke when a group of five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants visited him to congratulate him in his Makurdi home.

Dr. Ortom said if the people were united, they would achieve more.

The former Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment said he would tap people’s talents irrespective of ethnicity, political and religious affiliations, to enable him move the state forward.

He said the aspirants were experienced and patriotic indigenes, who sought to offer quality service to the people, assuring that he would rely on them to deliver on his mandate. Ortom pledged to promote excellence above sycophancy and mediocrity.

The governor-elect said his doors remained open to the PDP members, adding that they were free to offer suggestions on what could be done to develop the state.

“You should feel free to correct me if I make mistake.”

The group’s spokesman, Mr. Hingah Biem, congratulated Ortom and urged him to reconcile the indigenes and transform the state.

He pledged their support for the governor-elect.

  • Nigerians must reconcile with God

SIR, may I use your widely read newspaper to remind Nigerians that the only path to genuine recovery for ailing Nigeria and her embattled people is for us all to waste no further time in turning back to God by obeying His sacred commandments to the letter.

Our dispositions to one another at all levels and on all spheres, governmentally and non-governmentally, show clearly that we have little or no regard for God and His interests. We behave as if we created ourselves for our cherished mundane purposes. Love, which God decreed in 1Corinthians 13, as the pivot of human interpersonal dealings, sadly, has no room in our affairs today.

The general run of our so-called leaders feeds us with deceit, while we, the poor, swallow it hook, line and sinker in utter helplessness.

The situation is exacerbated by the offensive conspiracy of silence by those that should be the conscience of the nation and the defender of the cheated at all times, and the callous support of the few that should guide the ungodly towards the path of righteousness.

Quite disturbing is the fact that those among us that revel in criminalities like corruption and abominable exploitation/oppression of the masses of the people have forgotten that as old as Methuselah lived (969 years according to the Bible), he died one day.

Those of us who own numerous mansions at the expense of the impoverished masses who live in shanties fail to realise the vanity of life and the fact that however long we live, we shall leave all behind and eventually give accounts of our (mis) deeds before God, The Impartial.

Let us remind ourselves of what God says in Psalm 9: 17 – 18: “The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God. For the needy shall not always be forgotten; the expectations of the poor shall not perish forever.”

The materialistic rulers of the world and their conscienceless cohorts may smile to the banks today while their preys languish in abject poverty (hunger, homelessness, inability to pay school fees etc); everything will end here because there is no bank in heaven to accommodate their loot.

Daily today in the news media, we are innundated with mind-boggling stories of criminalities perpetrated by the desperate ones who have been pushed to the wall by the wickedness of those that should cater for their welfare. An idle hand, it is said, is the devil’s workshop and there is a limit to which a hungry soul can stand it without misbehaving.

It is painful that the poor whom our Lord Jesus Christ came and lived for are now being cheated, exploited and oppressed by the few with the mandate to turn their situations around for better.

Even in our private capacities, how do we treat our servants – housemaids, drivers and messangers? Do we realise that they too belong to the same society where people cough up intimidating amounts as university tuition fees per session? How do you, a multi-millionaire, expect the driver you pay a monthly paltry salary of N35,000 to be a proud father of a varsity student? One can go on and on about the nauseating indices of Godlessness that are fast turning life into hell for the majority.

Money ritualists are on the loose while assassins, kidnappers and armed robbers are not showing any sign that they may down tools anytime soon.

With all these, it is time we all sat down and reflect on why God created us and the consequences of treating His commandments with disdain. We must all daily ask ourselves: If God calls me today, have I been living in His ways? This is why we must reconcile with Him today that we may live according to His will and enjoy His abundant Grace.

    Toyin Aimakhu, husband reconcile

Over the weekend, reports emerged that actress Toyin Aimakhu, has separated from her husband, Adeniyi Johnson, after a year and half of marriage, but it turned out that the purported reports were blown out of proportion.

“This event made us know who our friends and well wishers are…,”said the couple in a statement released Monday.

Speculation was high at the weekend, when it was observed that the actress had removed ‘Johnson’ from her Instagram profile, and reverted to her maiden name. Reports had it that, in like manner, her husband also changed his Facebook status to ‘separated’.

In atelephone chat with the couple on Sunday, Johnson told The Nation that there was no problem whatsoever with their marriage, revealing that his wife was seated close to him at that time. On handing the phone to Aimakhu, she neither confirmed nor refuted the purported story, but added that they were with their parents, and begged to be excused from further prodding.

However, there were indications their marriage was going through some turbulence, as the couple’s statement, on Monday, suggested that their meeting with their parents could have resulted in a quick reconciliation.

The statement reads: “With the heart of appreciation and sincerity, we write: There’s no fire without smoke. For every marriage and journey there are moments of storm, that was our stormy and trying times.

“The recent event obviously made us know how important our marriage is and that a lot of lives and destiny are attached to ours, we never knew the weight our marriage carried until now, we discovered a lot of destiny and glory hangs on our own.

“May we not let God and you down. To the bloggers who blogged, we appreciate you, you might think you wrote a news, but it turned out to restore our happiness and home back, so to all the bloggers we say a big thank you.

“We’ve learnt our lessons, corrected our mistakes and choose to move on…We are short of words and filled with gratitude 1st to our parents, our spiritual parents, adopted parents, friends, colleagues and fanssssss…OMG!!! Our fans you guys are the best… for your calls, text messages, mails, pings, Whatsapp messages, facebook comments and messages…. we love you all…

“The bible says when we pass through fire it won’t burn us and through water it won’t drown us and whenever we pass through storms it will not over power us(Isaiah 43:2-3).

May God still all storms in our lives and make everyone happy…. whatever you hear from us henceforth shall be good news… we wish you all the best and love you all… ADENIYI JOHNSON and TOYIN AIMAKHU JOHNSON.”

It will be recalled that Aimakhu and Johnson got married on  Monday, July 8, 2013 at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry.

Meanwhile, popular blogger, Linda Ikeji, who was said to had linked Funke Akindele to her report on the incident, has been asked to retract her post by lawyers of latter.

In a letter to Ikeji, the law firm, Lagal Aficionados, condemned in strong terms, the posts, which they said ascribed a harmless picture on Akindele’s Instagram’s page   to be a mockery of the alleged separation between Aimakhu and Johnson.

Signed by Yetunde Okulaja, the statement said that Linda assumed the role of a mind reader and a judge in her Sunday, January 25, 2015 post:  “DID FUNKE AKINDELE SHADE TOYIN AIMAKHU LAST NIGHT?”,  adding that the blogger has exposed the favourite actress to cynical comments and hasty judgments.

While demanding a retraction and apology within 24 hours, Akindele’s lawyers said that Linda’s report did not only portray Akindele in bad light, it has promoted unhealthy rivalry where there is none.

  • NBA Presidency: Southwest lawyers reconcile factions

Southwest Lawyers Forum, a.k.a Egbe Amofin, will on Saturday adopt a candidate for the forthcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidency, which was zoned to the region.

The group at the weekend reconciled with its splinter group made up of branch chairmen, which claimed to have sacked the association’s leadership headed by Bandele Aiku (SAN).

At a meeting held at the Nigerian Law School in Lagos, Chairman of the Reconciliation Committee Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) announced that the disputes have been resolved.

A screening committee, headed by former NBA President Chief Priscilla Kuye, was saddled with the task of studying the candidates’ Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) and manifestos and making a recommendation.

After a closed-door deliberation by the committee which lasted over two hours, Mrs. Kuye said members decided by voting to screen the candidates.

She said two of the aspirants, Funke Adekoya (SAN) and Dele Adesina (SAN) addressed the committee, while Chief Niyi Akintola (SAN) said he was not informed that speeches would be made, and that he had submitted his manifesto.

Mrs. Kuye said the CVs and manifestos would be circulated to the branches for their inputs. The fourth aspirant, Mr Mr. Osas Erhabor, did not submit his CV.

“Mr Erhabor didn’t submit his CV and didn’t honour us with his presence,” she said.

The former NBA President said in the interest of justice, fairness and equity, the forum would meet again on Saturday at the Ibadan Bar Centre in Oyo State where it would decide who would fly the flag.

There were a few dissenting voices who complained that choosing a candidate was becoming tedious, and that a choice should be made since virtually all the branch chairmen were present.

But Aiku called for calm, saying: “Please support the leaders. Saturday is around the corner. We should thank the committee for a job well done. The committee will submit its report on Saturday.”

On the bid by the Midwest Bar Forum to also present a candidate, Awomolo said they merely approached the Egbe for a ‘working relationship,’ adding that there was no agreement that Midwest would take the 2014 presidential slot.

Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) endorsed the reconciliation efforts, saying: “We are not politicians; it’s they who bicker, it’s they who gossip. We are lawyers. There are no factions.”

Aiku added that the bond within Egbe must be sustained.
