Zachary Baraje roars: No ache over NPFL record

Plateau United head coach, Zachary Baraje has said his side will maintain 100% home record against Abia Warriors.

The newly promoted side will host Warriors in Sunday’s NPFL matchday 5 clash at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos.

Baraje said his side will not give up on its firm grip on their home supremacy but fight hard to make positive breakthrough on the road performances.

“Of course, we have kept a clean slate so far on our home matches though same cannot be said on the away record. However, we are not in a hurry to let go our firm hold on home ground rather we want to be counted on the road, too.

“Against Abia Warriors on Sunday in Jos we hope to keep intact the 100% home record in the ongoing league season.

“We cannot just give up not now the players are doing their very best to ensure we are counted. If you observe the team play especially in the first 20 minutes you will readily conclude that they are the team for the future. We do not have the luxury of experienced players which I’m making frantic effort to find a way around it.

“I will continue to work on the players to avoid conceding careless goals especially on away matches. That’s my main goal to reduce the shortcomings drastically and I think management can complement our efforts by coming out strongly on how to reinforce the team for optimum performance,” said the former Akwa United coach to supersport.com.

The Jos landlords have raked in six points from possible 12 in the four-week old Nigerian top flight.

  • Glencore shares tumble to record low

Shares in commodity giant Glencore plunged 25 per cent after analysts raised fears about lower metal prices.

The company’s shares dropped to a new record low of 73p at 15:00, helping push the FTSE 100 down two per cent.

Analysts warned slumping metal prices could leave Glencore shares almost worthless because of its heavy debts.

Fears over Glencore’s £20billion debt pile have seen its shares drop more than 30 per cent in the past month.

More than £3billion was wiped off Glencore’s market value after a warning from analysts at Investec.

They wrote that low metals prices “could see almost all equity value eliminated” at the Switzerland-based company.

They also questioned how much Glencore could raise from selling its agriculture division, as “valuing such a volatile business is likely to be tough”.

Glencore hopes to generate up to $12billion (£7.9billion) from the sale of its grains business to reduce its debt burden.

The Investec analysts said that without major restructuring, Glencore and another debt-laden mining firm, Anglo American, could see their value “evaporate”.

Shares in London-listed Anglo American also fell nine per cent.

Hunter Hillcoat, an analyst at Investec, said: “Mining companies gorged themselves on cheap debt in a race to grow production following the Chinese stimulus that occurred in the wake of the great financial crisis.

“The consequences are only now coming home to roost, as mines take a long time to build.”

Fears of a slowdown in China’s economy has weighed on metal prices, with copper, aluminium and nickel all down more than 25% compared to a year ago.

  • Apple reports record sales of iPhone 6s, 6s Plus

Apple (AAPL.O) said it had sold more than 13 million iPhone 6s and 6s Pluses during their first weekend on the market, setting a record for its marquee product.

The company beat its previous record of 10 million in sales for the previous generation of iPhones in its first weekend in 2014. This year’s results benefited from the inclusion of the Chinese market, where regulatory problems delayed the gadget’s debut last year.

Analysts had expected the company to sell 12 million to 13 million phones this past weekend.

“Customers’ feedback is incredible, and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos,” Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9.”

Analysts had said Apple was virtually assured to set a new record for iPhone sales with the inclusion of China, which many expect will soon be the company’s largest market.

But the figures announced on Monday suggest Apple’s iPhone sales were up overall, said FBR Capital Markets senior analyst Daniel Ives. He said the sales figures should ease investors’ concerns about how Apple will fare amid economic turmoil in China.

“Demand out of China looks white-hot,” Ives said.

Moor Insight & Strategy analyst Patrick Moorhead said the sales figures also suggested Apple seized some market share from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), its chief rival in the smartphone market.

Apple said the new iPhones would be available in more than 40 additional countries starting October 9, reaching more than 130 countries by the end of the year.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus arrived in stores on Friday, kicking off a sales cycle that will be scrutinised for signs of how much allure remains for the smartphone.

The company relies heavily on the sale of its flagship iPhones, which generated nearly two-thirds of its revenue in the latest quarter.

Shares of Apple were down 1.5 percent at $112.97 in early trading.

  • Backing world record with consumer engagement

Backing world record with consumer engagement

Following the unveiling of the world’s largest advert poster, which broke the Guinness World Book of Record, Nigerian Breweries has adopted a national consumer engagement campaign to sustain its brand equity of Guilder, writes ADEDEJI ADEMIGBUJI.

The competition in the Nigerian beer market has continued to generate rage. Even as Western beer consumption is reducing due to the global downturn, according to a market intelligence report by Corporate Nigeria, a research firm, the  brewery industry continues to thrive, while consumption of beer, put at 18.8 million hectolitres behind South Africa’s 31 per cent, has continued to heighten competition among brewers.

This is however not surprising. According to FinTell, a financial intelligence magazine, Nigeria’s volume-growth in the beer market, supported by significant annual investment in capacity of over $1.5 billion in the last three years, is rising steeply. “Though second to South Africa, Nigeria is Africa’s largest fastest growing beer market; climbing six places to the 19th position in the most recent data for country rankings on consumption,” the report stated.

Unfortunately, engaging this motley crowd of consumers has been the bane of brewers especially with the wave of consumerism which demands much responsibility and the spirit of giving back to consumers whose loyalty to various brands, have turned the industry to a cynosure of global investors.

As a result, brewers commit fortunes to marketing communication in an effort to engage consumers and also sustain the brand recall in consumers’ minds through experiential campaigns. Based on Mediafact report, an industry intelligence survey, the surge explains why the sector has continued to remain among the top three highest advertising and marketing spenders.

Striving for the souls of consumers, has lead to lots of brands from the industry top players – Nigerian Breweries, Guinness Nigeria and other brewers, launching world record-breaking projects, and each of these jumbo campaigns are also used as platforms for consumer reward campaigns.

For instance, when Guinness launched the largest jersey in the world towards the African Cup of Nations in 2013, the brewer took about 200 consumers to South Africa to watch the matches through a tailored consumer promo. Also, NB, through its Legend Extra Stout and Heineken brands, has rewarded many consumers with all-expense paid trip to Dubai, Europe to watch live matches, among others.

However, to deepen the crave for the heart of consumers and its share of the market, NB recently unveiled the world’s largest advertisement poster, again by following the same rule of consumer engagement. Coming at a time when the Nigerian economy is just starting to reflect potentials of buoyancy, experts have reckoned that the promotion is already causing ripples in the nation’s highly competitive alcoholic beverage market.

First is the choice of words in describing the promo which is being positioned as, “Nigeria’s biggest consumer promotion. And just to put its money where its mouth is, Gulder unveiled the world’s largest poster on Monday, August 24, 2015, to coincide with the launch of the National Consumer Promotion.

To build consumer trust as a way of engagement, the brand owners enrolled about 200 journalists for an experiential task, Gulder Ultimate Search where  winner emerged to win an Brand New Hyundai Elantra For N220 at the Enugu Stadium where the largest poster was also unveiled to commemorate a national consumer promo for the Gulder brand.

The CEO of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Nicolaas Vervelde, said the Gulder brand is synonymous with various innovative feats in the beer market, hence the production of the poster. Though regarded as another marketing gimmick, consumer promotions are desirable, as companies struggle for a bigger size of the market and a greater percentage of consumers’ disposable income.

So how big is big? How big is the 2015 Gulder National Consumer Promotion, which necessitated the brand managers to refer to it as the biggest consumer promotion in Nigeria? “A simple way is to look at the prizes on offer. The grand prize is a brand new Hyundai Elantra car, and Gulder is giving away 15 of this model of vehicles. Well, there are 14 left to be won as Chuka Nnabuife, a journalist with National Light newspaper won the very first Hyundai Elantra car at the unveiling of the Gulder Ultimate Promo held on August 24 with journalists from all over Nigeria as participants,” said a brand analyst, Mr. Yemi Kushimo, CEO Kush Media.

“Gulder has created three channels for its teeming consumers to win big at this year’s edition of its National Consumer Promotion. A peep into the prizes at stake may just give an insight into how gargantuan the Gulder Consumer Promotion truly is,” he added.

To engage beer consumers, the brand handlers said there are three legs to the campaigm in which consumers will be rewarded with various prizes, the ultimate of which are the brand new 2015 Hyundai Elantra cars for 14 Nigerians, courtesy the 2015 Edition of the Gulder National Consumer Promotion.

While willing consumers are expected to bond with the Gulder brand through purchase to unlock the various promises and treasures of Gulder under the crown corks, the brand handler said there are various stages of experiencing the engagement.

“First is the instant prize crown corks. As the name connotes, the prizes can be claimed instantly. The second crown cork is the differentiated crown cork category with  alpha numeric codes inscribed underneath the corks. Holders of these crown corks have to send the codes to 20388 to be part of a national raffle draw that would be held forth-nightly. Holders of the third class of crown corks – the experiential crown corks- marked Ultimate Chase, will have to report at designated national chase venues with six of those crown corks to participate for an opportunity to win a brand new car. Aside the prizes to be won, the Ultimate Chase, gives consumers the opportunity to imbibe the brand’s core values,” the brewery affirmed in a statement.

During a media launch of the promo, the first of the 15 brand new Hyundai Elantra cars up for grabs and it was won by Mr. Chuka Nnabuife who works with National Light newspaper, Anambra State. Nnabuife beat eight other journalists at the Gulder Chase to discover the key to the car that he eventually won. That leg of the promo was devoted exclusively to journalists.

The Marketing Manager, Gulder, Life, “33” Export, Mr. Emmanuel Agu, said: “This is a promotion like no other, and that is the message we are passing to the consumers. We are trying to paint a picture of what it means to be big in the eyes of our consumers, hence the unveiling of the World’s largest poster to kick off the National Consumer Promotion.

“The message we are passing to the consumers is that this year’s NCP is like no other. No beer brand will be able to do what Gulder has done this year and no consumer is left out as there are prizes for every category of people. We brought in the aspect of the chase because the brand is one that talks about masculinity, determination and resilience. It is a brand for successful people. So we brought the brand essence of Gulder to life by including the Gulder Golden Chase. If you are strong and energetic enough to run and jog, why not jog for a fortune,” he advised.

As a result of these mega activations, industry observers said the Nigerian marketing communication is coming to global reckoning with the unveiling of the largest advertisement poster and world largest jersey in Nigeria.

  • Nasdaq hits record high

The Nasdaq composite hit a record high on Friday on strong results from Google (GOOGL.O), while the Dow and the S&P 500 fell, dragged down by Boeing (BA.N) and energy stocks.

A sharp drop in crude prices pushed the S&P 500 energy index .SPNY down 1.37 percent to its lowest level since January 2013. Exxon, down 0.7 percent, and Chevron, down 1.5 percent, were the biggest drag on the sector and also weighed on the broader market.

U.S. crude CLc1 dropped 1.39 percent and Brent LCOc1 declined 0.74 percent on concerns of growing oversupply. [O/R]

Google surged over 16.7 percent to a record high of $702.11, a day after reporting strong ad revenue growth that led to its profit beating estimates for the first time in six quarters.

The strong report rubbed off on Facebook (FB.O), expected to report next week. Its shares rose nearly 5 percent to a record high of $95.39.

“While earnings have beaten low expectations, the market is looking for forward guidance,” said David O’Malley, chief executive of Penn Mutual Asset Management.

Malley said the markets need to see better earnings for it to move higher and break out of the sideways action that has characterized much of the year.

At 11:00 a.m. ET the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC was up 30.27 points, or 0.59 percent, at 5,193.45. The index touched a record intraday high of 5,197.61.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI was down 70.58 points, or 0.39 percent, at 18,049.67 and the S&P 500 .SPX was down 1.92 points, or 0.09 percent, at 2,122.37.

Boeing (BA.N) fell 1.2 percent to $146.52, and was the biggest drag on the Dow, after the company said it will take a second-quarter charge related to problems with its KC-46 aerial refueling tanker aircraft program.

General Electric (GE.N) shares rose 0.6 percent to $27.19, one of the six gainers among the Dow 30, after raising its 2015 outlook for its industrial manufacturing businesses.

Nine of the 10 major S&P 500 indexes were lower, with the technology index .SPLRCT the lone gainer, up 1.5 percent.

The Nasdaq closed at a record high on Thursday, boosted by strong results from tech companies such as Netflix (NFLX.O) and ebay (EBAY.O). The three major indexes were poised to end the week higher following strong earnings reports from most of the blue-chip companies.

The dollar was on track for its biggest weekly gain in two months on the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike this year. However, a strong dollar reduces the vale of U.S. companies’ overseas income.

Despite early, upbeat results this week, U.S. companies are expected to post their worst sales decline in nearly six years in the second quarter, in part due to the strong dollar. Profit is expected to have fallen 2.9 percent, according to Thomson Reuters estimates.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by 2,065 to 810. On the Nasdaq, 1,601 issues fell and 984 advanced.

The S&P 500 index showed 16 new 52-week highs and 24 new lows, while the Nasdaq recorded 68 new highs and 51 new lows.

  • UNILAG best set record

    UNILAG best set record

    •Graduands share future plans

It was a celebration of firsts on Day One of the 2014 convocation of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where at least three of the 125 first class graduating students confessed to be the first to complete university education in their families or villages.

One of them, from Borno State, Mohammed Abdul-Rahman, who was the best student of the faculty of Environmental Sciences, disclosed that he was the first graduate in his family.

The 25-year old plans to go to his village, Kumaga, in Kala-balge Local Government Area of the state to contribute to development and social welfare.

The graduate of Urban and Regional Planning has big dreams, including becoming Nigeria’s president.

He said: “I feel great but at the same time, I am looking at it as nothing because, to me, the best is yet to come. I am a nation-builder and I want to be the president some day. In 2021, you might see me running for a political office. I chose to do Urban and Regional Planning right from the onset because in my region, the Northeast, we lack development, good leaders, among other things so with my degree, I can go back and develop the place.”

Another best, Margaret Adeogun, this time from the Faculty of Science, who bagged awards worth over N200, 000, was excited about being the first holder of a degree in her family.  She has also embraced the employment opportunity her institution has given her to be a graduate assistant though she is only 22 years-old.

The Ogun State born graduate of Microbiology whose CGPA was 4.90, said: “I am the first to hold a degree of any kind in my house and I feel great that hard work actually pays. What helped me were God, diligence and focus. When you have something to achieve and you pursue it with your entire mind, nothing can stop you.”

Stephen Oriakhu, the best graduate produced by the faculty of Arts with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.56 was happily shocked at being the first holder of a first class certificate in his village and shared some advice with Nigerians.

“I am the only son and the fourth child of my family. My uncle told me this morning that I am the first to graduate with a first class in my village, which made me feel like I had done something truly substantial,” he said.

The Philosophy graduate said he hoped to help re-orient Nigerians to believe in themselves and their country.

“I feel the major problem we are facing in the country starts from our mindset. We have to create the habit of learning and relearning things. Knowledge evolves. Most people keep saying the nation is bad but are not making efforts to make any changes. So we need more therapists in the country to help people reset their mindsets. My mission is to help Nigerians believe more in themselves and in their nation, because other developed countries do the same and that helped them to grow. No idea should be written off as stupid,” he said.

At this year’s convocation, which would end today, the institution graduated 10,600 students, 45 per cent of who were from the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS).

Among other feats, the institution made the decision to give automatic employment as graduate assistants to the best two students from all the programmes of the institution.

  • Rangers record big pre-season win

    Rangers record big pre-season win

Rangers bounced back from the loss to a non-league club to crush another amateur side Aghogho United FC of Warri 5-1.

Aghogho coach Jaku Biobio said: “This is not the kind of result that we bargained for.But I am not disappointed with the display of my players as we had no time to rest before the match. We just arrived and went straight to the pitch for the game.”

The pre-season friendly that took place in the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu saw coach Kelechi Emeteole fielding a nearly complete new set of players with Ikechukwu Gabriel the only player from Tuesday’s loss on the starting list.

Rangers raced into a three goals lead at the half hour mark with Emeka Okereke, Chika Nnaji and Chigozie Egwu finding the back of the visitors’ net in the fifth,25th and 30th minutes as they struggled to catch some breath after arriving late for the encounter.

Enterprising Izu Ibe scored for Rangers on 48 minutes after running onto a defence splitting pass from Samuel Agba, but the visitors pulled one back through Jimmy Ufuoma, who latched onto a-perfect cross to slam home on 70 minutes.

However, Emeka Okereke extinguished any hope of a comeback when he connected beautifully with a Samuel Agba well-laid cross on 75 minutes.

The visitors were spared more misery as the referee ruled out two other strikes by Chisom Egbuchulam and Emmanuel Eze for offside.
