Both the Federal and state governments have been advised to observe professional personnel best practices when recruiting staff into the civil service.

Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission in Ekiti State, Babatunde Akilo, gave the advice at the monthly meeting of the state’s branch of the Chattered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) in Ado-Ekiti.

According to him, most recruitments in some government establishments do not follow for best practices.

Such recruitments, he said, had become a clog in the wheel of national development.

The permanent secretary said competence and performance should be considered first before federal character to reflect the various geopolitical zones or states.

Akilo called for a review of the Federal Character policy to make competence a yardstick in appointments.

  • PENGASSAN advocates more recruitment into security agencies

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has called on the Federal Government to begin immediate recruitment of more people into the security agencies, especially the Police Force and the  Army, to curb crimes.

The senior staff union also demanded that the Army and the Police should reduce the number of operatives attached to politicians and few influential people to boost those at their operational areas.

In a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Warri, Delta State, and signed by the President, Comrade Francis Olabode Johnson and the General Secretary, Comrade Lumumba Okugbawa, PENGASSAN said the security agencies are already over stretched in maintenance of security and peace in the country.

“The NEC-in-Session observed the inadequacy in the number of security agents, especially the army and police who are already overstretched in maintaining security and peace in the country. There should be immediate recruitment in these security agencies to arrest the situation.

“The NEC-in-Session demanded that security operatives attached to politicians and powerful Nigerians in the country should be reduced to increase their number in operational areas,” the union stated.

Recognising the strong and unequivocal commitment of the security agencies in ensuring security of lives and property in the country, PENGASSAN condemned in strong terms the resurgence of attacks by Boko Haram insurgents.

PENGASSAN demanded that the Federal Government through the various security agencies should do everything possible in ensuring that the Dapchi Girls and all those in captivity regain freedom and re-unite them with their families.

The union also advised relevant security agencies to immediately circulate emergency and security numbers for the benefit of Nigerians, as well as check the influx of small arms and ammunitions into the country.

  • Reps allege recruitment racketeering at NSITF

Reps allege recruitment racketeering at NSITF

The House of Representatives has expressed concern over what it described as recruitment racketeering at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).  It ordered the Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity to investigate why the NSITF board  has not been inaugurated five months after its composition.

The fund’s management, the House said, is being inundated by requests for employment of senior managers by top officials of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The lawmakers also argued that the non-inauguration of the Board, which has former National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) General Secretary Frank Kokori as its chairman, has thrown the Fund into confusion, which is threatening the delivery of its mandate.

According to the law establishing the fund, NSITF Board members are drawn from Labour, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, who represents the ministry; the three executive directors of the Fund and its managing director/Chief Executive  Officer.

However, The Nation gathered that the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) had written to the Minister of Labour and Employment to inaugurate NSITF board without further delay.

Its National President, Oyinkansola Olasanoye, said the Board’s inauguration  would enable the Fund deliver on its mandate. She  expressed the union’s readiness  to work with relevant stakeholders and high government officials to appeal to the Minister to inaugurate the board.

According to her, the union had sent a letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, on the need to halt the recruitment of additional 350 senior managers into the Fund by the Minister at a time the Fund is facing financial difficulty and in no urgent need for fresh staffers.

Asking the Federal Government to expand the Fund’s mandate  to include payment of compensation to unemployed persons, Olasanoye said the implementation of the N5,000 social benefit promised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) ought to have been implemented by the NSITF, which has the manpower and structures to implement such mandate.

She said: “We thought that the APC government would have allowed the NSITF to implement the N5, 000 social benefit to unemployed persons because the Fund already has the staffers that are trained in the implementation of social security in advanced countries that have been implementing it for decades.

“In addition to this, they also have the structure in all the 36 states of the federation. Again, the Federal Government would not have to spend money to recruit fresh staff to administer the benefit. The reason the programme has not achieved the desired result is that the most appropriate body was not allowed to implement it.”

  • How to ace salary related questions in an interview

How to ace salary related questions in an interview

Landing that dream job is a job in itself.

The interview process that leads to an eventual selection of suitable candidate(s) can be a very arduous and tasking experience especially for the job seeker.

Let’s say time, chance, competence and serendipity have all collaborated with you that you conveniently aced all interview questions. Then comes the big question: “What salary do you expect?”

At this critical junction, a lot of people begin to flounder and goof for lack of tact and creativity that could ensure their landing the job without shortchanging themselves or downplaying their professional values and worth.

Another question job seekers get asked is “What is your current salary?”. This practice is fast becoming illegal around the world.

Although, these twin questions are not illegal in our clime, you will need a great amount of tact and creativity to conveniently answer.

Checking out these 6 tips that’ll help you handle salary questions:

    1. Do Your Research:

It is important that you thoroughly research the organization you intend to apply to. Find out about the position and compensation range.

Knowledge of the industry average for salary will not be out of place. This way, you are not overshooting your expectations or underprice yourself which undermines your competence.

Research what the job you’re applying for pays in tandem with your skill and work experience to make sure your expectations are on target.

    1. Decide On The Minimum Salary You Are Fine With:

Decide on the minimum salary offer you can accept; one that would cater conveniently for your expenses and creates some allowance for savings.

There is no point accepting an offer that will impoverish you, bearing in mind your family, social and economic commitments.

    1. Avoid Salary Questions In The Early Stage Of The Interview:

Negotiations are sometimes very difficult processes especially when you (as a job seeker) know you really need the job. This is where creativity and tact comes in handy.

Try to avoid this kind of talk until there is a solid offer on the table. However, if you are asked before you have such tangible offer, then be careful not to give a direct answer. It is always better to return the question to the interviewer.

You can say: “I will like to know more about the position and its sundry responsibilities before I consider a salary fit for it. What are your expectations for this job?”

    1. Avoid Giving Your Present Or Former Salary:

It is in your best interest if the interviewer reveals the salary package to you, instead of being cocooned and boxed with the question of “what salary do you expect?”.

However, if the reverse is the case, try as much as you can to be creative.

    1. Ask If There Are Other Compensation Benefits Alongside The Salary Offer:

One of the biggest calamity that can befall a person would be working in a job you don’t like and receiving a take home package (salary) that can hardly take you home…you know what I mean? *winks*

However, if you can’t get the salary you want, consider negotiating on the total compensation package. These benefits can include flexible work hours, vacation, training, health, education, transportation, etc.

    1. Be confident:

Being timid and overly humble about the value you can bring into the organization will be committing an hara-kiri (suicide). Confidence is not arrogance. It is a reflection of your emotion and intellectual competence.

A confident candidate with average experience and skills has more chances of being employed than a timid and docile, but highly competent person with experience.

    Hope this helps.
