  • APC committee defends registration

The five-man registration committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has described the criticism of the exercise by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as despicable propaganda.

The committee said there is enthusiasm, interest and massive turnout by the APC members in the ongoing registration, adding that it has already exhausted its booklets.

The exercise which started about two weeks ago in the state, will end on February 21, 2017, according to the committee led by former deputy governor of Abia state, Dr. Chris Akomas.

Speaking with reporters in Awka in reaction to the allegation by the opposition that people were being forced to register with APC in the state and buying voter’s cards for the people, the secretary of the committee, Mr. Ford Ozumba described the allegation as a poor one.

He declared that they were not in Anambra for primaries, but rather to register anybody who was willing to join APC, saying that he does not know why the opposition should be afraid.

“What we are doing here in Anambra has nothing to do with primaries of the party, we are not here to block anybody from registering and as we speak, the exercise has been smooth and encouraging,” he said.

The exercise, according to Ozumba, had to be in every state and questioned why the opposition party in Anambra should come up with such propaganda against APC.

APGA in Anambra State had gone to the local radio station in a paid commentary, alleging that APC was buying voters cards from the people for 2017 governorship election in the state in November.

“This type of allegation from the people of Anambra is despicable, very poor of the people and miles away from what we are here to do,” Ozumba said.

On whether the committee still targets the one million figure at the end of the exercise, he said hopefully, as the turnout had been impressive, adding that a good number of people from other parties were being registered in APC.

Governor, Akeredolu call for extension of voters’ registration

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the continuous voters’ registration to enable willing and eligible voters exercise their franchise.

The continuous voters’ registration ended yesterday in Ondo.

Mimiko, who spoke yesterday when he inspected the exercise in some wards in Ondo, noted that the number of enthusiastic eligible voters might not be captured within the five days stipulated for the exercise. The five days elapsed yesterday.

Mimiko was accompanied by the lawmaker representing Ondo East/West in the House of Representatives, Joseph Akinlaja.

He said if INEC wanted to fulfill its ultimate aim of allowing every eligible Nigerian to exercise his or her franchise, the electoral body must extend the time of the exercise.

“You can see that today, being the last day of the exercise, the people are still waiting. Everywhere I have been to, it’s the same story of many young men and women waiting to register.”

“There is no question about the fact that there are many of those who are willing to get registered that will not be accommodated within this time frame. So we will continue to plead with INEC to appreciate the fact that extension is very essential. The ultimate aim of INEC is to ensure that every wiling Nigerian be given the opportunity,” he said.

Former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Rotimi Akerodulu has also appealed to INEC to extend the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration to ensure that some people are not disenfranchised.

Akeredolu, who made the appeal in a statement yesterday by Aketi Media Group, said he had received many complaints about the exercise, adding that a number of technical itches had been reported since it began five days ago.

NAFDAC mulls review of imported food registration

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) may refuse  reregistration of imported food products that have spent more than five years without establishing a local production plant.

Acting Director-General, NAFDAC, Mrs  Yetunde Oni, gave this hint to reporters after  declaring open food Nigeria Exhibition and Conference in Lagos yesterday.

Currently, NAFDAC grants licenses  to reputable foreign  products manufactured outside Nigeria, after an application must  have been by a Nigerian representative of the foreign manufacturer. The representative of a foreign manufacturer must however have a duly executed Power of Attorney from the manufacturer, appointing and authorising him/it to act in that capacity for such products.

Mrs  Oni noted that while Nigeria has opened doors to safe  food imports that  are register able  locally, the agency is  interested  in foreign food products manufacturers  that are ready  to establish  local plants, transfer  technology and  create  jobs for Nigerians.

She advised representatives of foreign companies with products registered with the agency to consider establishing their plants in Nigeria.

She reiterated that the organisation is interested in food products that are safe for consumption and urged importers of food products intended for introduction into Nigeria to ensure products are safe and meet health standard requirements.

BPP sets December deadline for e-procurement registration

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) on Tuesday directed contractors doing business with the Federal Government to register on the e-procurement database by Decem-ber.

BPE Public Relations Officers (PRO) Mr. Thomas Odemwingie, who said this in Abuja, noted that the e-procurement platform would help fast-track the procurement process and eliminate fraud.

“We are trying to register, classify and categorise consultants, service providers and contractors who are doing business with or intend to do business with the government. The whole idea is to ensure that all companies with the same level of competence and also with the same resources are clustered in such a way that they can compete with each other,” he explained.

Odemwingie said the BPP now has a database, and “we encourage you to register on this database and you will get a code so that when you sign in using that code, people will know about your competencies’’.

He said with the new process, there would be no need for any physical contact with the procuring entity. The process would also eliminate the whole inter-face that predisposes procurement system to corruption.

  • Group creates BVN registration awareness

    Group creates BVN registration awareness

The Consumer Right Awareness Advancement and Advocacy (CRAAAI) has  urged Nigerians to go and register for their Bank Verification Numbers. Registration deadline is June 30.

The Chairman of the CRAAAI, Mr. Moses Igbrude, who spoke  at a stakeholders’ forum on identity management in the economy, organised to enlighten Nigeria, said identity management is a broad administrative area that deals with identifying individuals in a particular system. He listed the system to include a country, a network, or an enterprise and controlling their access to resources within that system by associating, user rights and restrictions with the established identity.

He added that the role of technology in modernising the banking sector has witnessed a paradigm shift from the traditional methods of banking to digital channels which involve enormous levels of electronic data capture (EDC) of customer’s information.

“Everybody needs security; if people are identified before they commit any crime, the person will be identified easily. “
