Fears heighten in Niger Delta as ex-militants, regroup, reactivate camps

Fear has enveloped the Niger Delta region, following strong indications that militants are regrouping in different camps located in the creeks of the region.

It was gathered from security sources yesterday that despite the existing amnesty pact between the region and the Federal Government, active militant camps are still being operated in the creeks.

lt was learnt that militants have been operating the camps and using them as safe havens to hide kidnap victims while negotiating for ransom.

A security source said many of such camps still exist in Bayelsa and Delta states, and called on the military to conduct aerial surveillance of various forests, creeks and mangroves to isolate and destroy such camps.

The source, who spoke in confidence, hinted of a notorious forest in Nembe, where he said most of the kidnapped victims are always ferried and kept in different camps.

But, following the exit of former President Goodluck Jonathan and plot by some ex-militant leaders to resurrect the Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), tension has returned to the region over fears that militants may unleash violence in the region

It will be recalled that a planned meeting of the group, called by Tompolo in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, generated so much panic and security concerns that later led to its cancellation.

Unconfirmed reports, however, said that some of the ex-militant leaders later met secretly at an undisclosed location in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

Meanwhile, the security outfit, Operation Pulo Shield (OPS), formerly known as the Joint Task Force (JTF), is said to be combing the creeks to locate and destroy such camps.

Commander, OPS, Major-General Alani Okunola, said the outfit has arrested some suspected militants in the Niger Delta.

Okunola, who assumed duty as the OPS commander last Wednesday, said the suspects were nabbed during a raid on a militants’ camp at Benigboye in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

During the operation, which took place on September 5, he said the suspected militants, on sighting the OPS troops, opened fire on them.

Okunola said the action of the militants led to a 30-minute gun battle between the militants and the operatives.

He said the suspected militants later abandoned the camp and escaped with their wounded colleagues.

He added that the troops combed the area and discovered sophisticated weapons, including Medium Machine Gun, AK 47 light machine gun and AK 47 automatic rifle.

Okunola said: “Other weapons recovered from the suspected militants are one Fabrique Nationale, SMI and G3 rifled.

“The troops also recovered one single barrelled gun, 7.62mm Nato special ammunition, 11 quantity of improvised explosive devices, identity cards belonging to Oroso Kpasco, Iyadoufega Nuwent,  Clifford Ebikabowei and Emmanuel Stanley.

“Also recovered was an Automated Teller Machine card belonging to Mr. Ingo Kpasco, a suspected hoodlum at Odimodi community recently.”

The OPS commander said the camp was destroyed while the recovered arms and ammunition remain in the custody of OPS.

Okunola said during the operation, one Mr. Ebiwame Lamia, who escaped from the September 5 raid was arrested, adding that Lamia later confessed that he was at the previous camp when it was raided.

He warned criminals in the region to desist from all acts of illegalities, vowing that the OPS would continue to match word with action in the fight against criminalities in line with the zero tolerance campaign.

  • Eagles regroup July 15

    Eagles regroup July 15

The Super Eagles will regroup July 15 in Abuja, the Federal Capital for the return leg of the African Nations Championship qualifier (CHAN), against the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in Abidjan schedule for July 27.

Head Coach Stephen Keshi told the players after the 4-1 mauling of the Ivorians in the final leg qualifier that the players must return to their clubsides and ensure that they make valuable contributions to their teams while awaiting the list of those who will make it to Abidjan.

He warned that any invited player who fails to make it to Abuja on the said date should forget about the return leg game as there is plenty of work to be done despite the wide margin first leg victory over the Elephants.

“We cannot afford to take our feet off the pedal because we have won here, the Ivorians are a very good side and we must be very ready for the return leg so that we don’t get shocked”, Keshi enthused.

Technical Committee Chairman of the NFF, Barrister Christopher Green, had a similar position on the opposition, noting that once again the Eagles were wasteful in front of goal and must gird their loins properly for the return leg to avoid a shocker.

“We won well but we could have done better. How can we explain a team that was two men down still threatening us and even being picked for off sides? It means we have a lot of work to do and I trust the technical crew will handle the situation.”

Keshi has already said he hopes to invite at least three new players to fortify the squad for the return leg while those players who did not measure up to standard in the first leg in Kaduna will be dropped.

  • 2015: Yar’Adua’s men regroup to stop Jonathan

2015: Yar’Adua’s men regroup to stop Jonathan

Loyalists of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua are fully back in the trenches as part of the plot by the north to regain the presidency in 2015.

In the group are erstwhile associates and aides of the deceased who, sources say, have been meeting regularly lately following their resolve to champion the cause of the north in the quest to produce the nation’s next president.

The group was said to have been prevailed upon by eminent northern leaders to save the face of the north in the crucial 2015 electoral contest.

“Several emissaries were sent to the likes of Alhaji Abba Ruma, Senator Adamu Aliero and Gen. Sarki Abdullai Muktar (rtd) by concerned northern elders on the need for them to return to the political turf in the interest of the north,” one source familiar with the development told The Nation.

The pressure on the Yar’Adua men, it was gathered, is predicated on the fact that having been involved with him in the race for the presidency in 2007 they are better placed to champion the cause of the north to vie for the presidency in 2015.

Another factor in the group’s favour is their massive financial status which sources say can match that of any other group in the country in prosecuting a presidential campaign against the incumbent should he decide to go for a second term.

The northern leaders had to turn to the Yar’Adua group after discovering some apathy from politicians they first sounded out.

The group held its first meeting in Abuja a few days after the Independence day celebration and reportedly resolved to champion the cause of the north within and outside the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Those said to have attended the maiden meeting included former Minister of Agriculture, Sayyadi Abba Ruma, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Adamu Aliero, and former National Security Adviser (NSA), General Sarki Abdullahi Mukhtar.

Others are Dr. Taminu Yakubu, who served in Yar’Adua’s cabinet as the President’s Chief Economic Adviser, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, who held the position of the Minister of Finance as well as two top personal security aides of the late President.

The politicians, sources claim, rose from the meeting with a resolve to approach the 2015 project from two fronts. One is to strengthen their base within the ruling party with a view to wrestling the ticket of the PDP from Jonathan during the party’s primary election.

The other approach, which appears to be more popular among those who attended the first meeting, is to move the group into another political party and confront Jonathan and the PDP headlong in 2015.

Two committees were said to have been formed to work on the two approaches. Consequently, some members of the group were said to have met the leadership of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) to discuss the 2015 general election.

The talks, according to sources, bordered on moving the remnant of the late President’s structure fully into the CPC while work would start in earnest on how to install a preferred presidential hopeful within the party. Such a candidate, both parties agreed, must be from the north.

It was learnt that the group has met at least on two occasions with leaders of the CPC including former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari. One of such meetings, it was learnt ,took place in Kaduna on November 14 with the General in attendance.

Sources said at another meeting of the group held shortly after the first Umaru Musa Yar’Adua memorial lecture in Abuja on Thursday November 29, the two committees reported back to the house and further decisions were taken on how to bring more people into the fold.

The latest meeting of the group, The Nation on Sunday learnt was held in Katsina last Tuesday. At the parley were a former Minister of State for Finance from the Southwest; a former Minister of National Planning; a former Minister of Power also from the Southwest, a former Deputy Governor in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and a leading industrialist in the country.

The presence at the meeting of a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation from the North Central and Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, one of the closest friends of the late President and a wealthy businessman from Katsina State, further strengthened the gathering.
