  • Who then reinstated Maina?

SIR: Wanted and hunted for financial crimes for years now, Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman, Pension Reform Task Team, stunningly and colonially walked back into the same office where he was accused of squandering what he was charged to unveil and guard.

Probably thinking we had forgotten what page we opened last with him, he went straight to recover what was then taken away from him, following a barrage of criticisms trailing his handling of Police pension funds.

But we were out to shock Maina. We had not forgotten an inch or a pin from his last duty as chairman of an investigating panel, charged with the onerous task of uncovering the mess in the police pension scheme.

And from there, we started off – shouting down and hauling stones at whoever brought back a man on the wanted radar of the EFCC as well as the police over misuse of trust and betrayal of confidence reposed in him a few years back by the entire nation.

And then, the shocker: everybody denied ever appending to Maina’s return. They traded his recall and threw blames at one another. While the Head of Service of the Federation washed her hands off any Maina return, the minister under whose purview Maina was reinstated dusted his feet too, thereby, raising the poser, ‘who then reinstated Maina’, a man wanted and curiously trailed by the nation’s security for a disservice?

Maina was recalled by someone, and an integral part of the present system. He was returned by his accomplices and cohorts in the crime he is wanted for. And uncovering the unseen hands in his return is a leeway in unearthing the cabal holding our system by the jugular.

So, we refuse to be cowed this time. Maina’s collaborators are not ghosts; but human beings and Nigerians, working in high places. And it is incumbent on the APC-led federal government to carry out the task of unveiling them or treat it with levity as usual.

After all, this is Nigeria – a place where everything goes. This is an enclave where laws are made for the less privileged while the high and mighty are well, above board. So I won’t be surprised if in the next couple of weeks, the Maina conundrum is swept under the carpet like many others of its ilk.

Just a few months ago, after Evans capture, surfaced a drama with the caption, “Evans vanishes” in most of our major dailies, and I hummed deep in my heart – “Nigeria we hail thee!” But they hurriedly told us he was in their custody but in a different location.

So what does not happen here? The other day, currencies of different foreign backgrounds was trailed to a former NNPC boss’ residence and recovered by the federal government, and that was the last we heard about it.

Then again, a house stashed with foreign currencies was discovered in Lagos, and everybody denied ownership of such property because we are in a country where everybody belongs to nobody.

So I won’t be astounded if Maina reinstated himself or was rather brought back to service by a group of ghosts, working for their selfish interests. But be it as it may, the manner in which this singular Maina melodrama is handled will either make or mar the Muhammadu Buhari administration in its war against corruption.

  • Thanksgiving as ex-YABATECH bursar is reinstated

Eight years after he was unlawfully disengaged by the management of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) as the school Bursar, Mr Joseph Akeju, has been reinstated by the school, ending a protracted legal tussle that followed the development.

Akeju, who is the Principal Founder of Pass Your Examination (PYE), a professional training outfit, could not hold back his joy at a testimony and thanksgiving service held by Professional Accountants’ Christian Ministry in Yaba, Lagos, on Sunday.

He said his travail was a product of “high-level conspiracy” and “academic politics” by staff of the school, describing his disengagement as unjust. His YABATECH, even as he expects his rights, privileges from the time.

Akeju whose speech was titled: Reconciliation, reconstruction devoid of vengeance, said his reinstatement came with restoration of his rights and privileges. He said he had forgiven people conspired against him and concocted falsehood that led to the termination of his appointment.

During the battle for his reinstatement, Akeju said he lost his second wife and his doctoral programme was stalled. He said his only consolation was his vindication by the school management. The PYE boss praised the Rector, Dr Margaret Ladipo, for upholding justice. Akeju said the peaceful resolution of the matter was a testimony to Ladipo’s pragmatic leadership and large-heartedness.

Akeju said: “I believe God is alive. No matter the level of difficulties believers may be facing, God will never abandon His own people. I am happy that my travail has ended in praise.”

Pastor Joseph Aborowa, who presided over the service, advised congregation members to have faith in God when faced with difficulties. Taking his exhortation from Psalm 124 Vs 1-8, Aborowa said keeping faith in God would be rewarded with victory, saying Akeju’s reinstatement was through divine intervention.

The service was attended by Akeju’s family members and friends, including Dr Tayo Popoola of Mass Communication Department of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

  • Reinstated Plateau varsity VC vows to rebrand school

The reinstated Vice-Chancellor of Plateau State University Bokkos Prof Danjuma Sheni, has said he will reposition the institution to enable it achieve academic excellence.

He made the pledge when he was welcomed to his office by some of the students.

Sheni was sacked last year by former Plateau governor Jonah Jang after only two years in office.

But Jang’s successor Governor Simon Lalong, reinstated Sheni to enable the state-owned university achieve stability and academic success.

“The task given to me by Governor Lalong was to make sure the school achieves academic excellence; hence, I’m going to initiate academic programmes to enable us achieve that set goal,” Sheni said.

The university has since graduated two sets of finalists but the graduates have not yet been mobilised for the National Youth SDervice Corps due to the non-accreditation of their courses by the Nationa Universities Commission Sheni while addressing a briefing in his office at the school campus, expressed appreciation to Lalong for his love for the progress of the institution.

He said: “As part of actions to reposition the institution, I will be conducting an audit of various section of the university to build confidence in citizens of Plateau and Nigerians which will address all contending issues facing the institution.”

He constituted four committees – audit, finance and contract, security and academic.

  • Lawyer wants Nyako reinstated

ALagos lawyer and human rights activist, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos to reinstate the impeached  Adamawa State Governor Muritala Nyako.

He claimed he filed the suit in public interest. Ogungbeye is asking the court to declare as “unlawful, unconstitutional, illegal, null and void” the impeachment proceedings and Nyako’s  eventual removal.

Joined as the first to sixth defendants  are the Acting Governor of the state, Ahmadu Fintiri; the state House of Assembly; the outgone Chief Judge of the state, Ambrose Mammadi; Chairman of the impeachment panel, Buba Kajama; the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Inspector-General of Police.

In the suit numbered FHC/L/CS/1180/14, Ogunbeje is seeking a relief among others, an order of the court to compel Fintiri to vacate office with immediate effect and reinstate Nyako.

It would be recalled that following the adoption of the report of a seven-man investigation panel, which indicted Nyako of 16 counts of gross misconduct, he was impeached on July 15,  by the state House of Assembly and the  speaker, Umaru Fintiri, was sworn in as the acting governor.

Ogungbeje contended that the process that led to Nyako’s impeachment was unconstitutional as the ousted governor was not  served with the impeachment notice.

According to him, the failure of the Adamawa State House of Assembly to serve Nyako with the notice was a violation of Nyako’s fundamental right to fair hearing as enshrined under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution.

Setting up the investigation panel after a court order had restrained the House of Assembly from doing so, the lawyer argued, amounted to contempt of court and a display of defiance and flagrant disobedience to the court.

He also allegd bias on the part of the former Chief Judge, Justice Mammadi, who set up the investigative panel while his order restraining the House from setting up the panel was still subsisting.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

  • Aminu Maigari reinstated

    Aminu Maigari reinstated

Troubled Nigeria Football Federation   (NFF) president, Aminu Maigari, has been reinstated to office after a court order restraining him and other executive committee members of the federation was vacated on Wednesday.

Nembe City chairman, Mrs Ebiakpo Rumson Baribote, had instituted a suit at the Plateau State High Court in Jos, that restrained the NFF and its congress from managing football affairs in Nigeria.

The NFF was subsequently suspended by FIFA for government interference following the appointment of Lawrence Katken to run the football house by Nigeria sports minister, Dr Tamuno Danagogo.

But on Wednesday, Justice L.P. Lot of the High Court in Jos agreed to vacate the case against Maigari and his NFF board as Nigeria move closer to beating further sanctions from FIFA.

Reinstated NFF general secretary, Musa Amadu, has already communicated with FIFA about the latest development.

Maigari and the NFF executive committee members have now returned to office as instructed by FIFA before it can lift the suspension.

It is now expected that the world football governing body, FIFA, will announce the lifting of the suspension of Nigeria since the court case has been vacated and the NFF executive committee reinstated.

  • Sacked Ondo council chairmen reinstated

The nine local government caretaker committee chairmen that were suspended by the Ondo State House of Assembly have been reinstated.

It was learnt that their reinstatement was prompted by the intervention of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who returned from an overseas trip on Tuesday.

But the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Mr. Oye Aladetan, told reporters after the plenary session that the House recalled the council chairmen after they submitted the staff audit report.

He said the decision was not influenced by the governor.

Aladetan said: “We are independent of the Executive. The decision to suspend them was taken unanimously by the House and a similar step was taken to reinstate them.

“Since they have complied with our directive by submitting the documents we requested for, we decided to forgive them.”

When the chairmen were sacked, the Assembly appointed new persons to replace them.

It was learnt that top government officials, including Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi and the Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Ademujimi, on Monday met with the new appointees and told them not to resume office until the governor returned.

A group, the Ondo State Democratic Awareness Forum (OSDAF), hailed the Assembly members for their attempt at ensuring transparency in councils.

In a statement by its Chairman, Mr. Ikuejemilo Isaac and Secretary Mr. Oladeinde Victor said the people appreciate the lawmakers’ courage, “even though it was thwarted by the executive”.

OSDAF said: “The entire citizenry in the state is solidly behind your action and with this development, you (lawmakers) have proved to the world that you are worthy ambassadors of your various constituencies. No matter what the Executive may have done to reverse the sack, your efforts are appreciated.”

The group urged the Assembly to make the council chairmen account for the allocations they have been collecting since their appointment.
