Joel Obi relishes Real, Man Utd tests

Nigeria international Joel Obi has said pre-season matches against Real Madrid, Roma and Manchester United will test his Italian club Inter Milan ahead of the new season. Inter, who have won the Italian league championship 18 times, finished fifth last season.

“I would say that once we’ve come this far in our preparations the friendly games can be of great help, also to see how we are in our physical condition in comparison to these great teams. Therefore it will be great tests for us,” said the Nigeria midfielder, who is back at the San Siro after a loan spell at Parma.

“We will go there without being worried to give our all. We will play our game, then we will see how it goes.”

The left-footed midfielder has not hidden his desire to play for Inter this season after completing another loan spell way from the San Siro.

Ganaru said the hard-earned victory against Lobi Stars will signal lots of good things for the side in the ongoing league season.

“I’m really happy with the victory against Lobi Stars which is our first win of the ongoing season. It has been long since Nasarawa United defeated Lobi Stars as games involving both sides have always taken the shape of a local derby.

  • Anambra community relishes philanthropy

Something great happened in Nnewi, the industrial capital of Anambra State. And the people loved every minute of it.

One of its illustrious people, Chief Louis Izuchukwu Onwugbenu paid the medical bills of patients in the hospital.

But that was just one of the things he did. Onwugbenu, Chief Executive Officer of  Louis Carter Group of Companies, also set up a foundation to cater for the academic needs of people with disability as well as those who cannot otherwise pay for their education. His scholarship scheme takes care of that.

His family also handed over a three-storey building, a hall and another three-storey structure for both St. Louis Nursery/Primary School and Secondary School, Uruagu, to the Church. They had earlier donated a chapel of adoration, a church building.

It was Onwugbenu’s way of marking his 60th birthday anniversary. The event also coincided with the family giving out his daughter, Ukay, in marriage.

His first son, Emeka addressed the large gathering in honour of his father.

He said: “We launched Louis Carter Educational Foundation today with an initial sum of N10million.  The foundation, he said, will only centre on education, helping the less privileged families to pay their children’s school fees and making sure that they get the best results.

Chief Louis Carter presented the documents of the school buildings donated to the church to the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Hilary Odili Okeke as well as a cheque of N1,079,945 to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital for three patients who failed to pay their medical bills. The patients were overjoyed. He promised to do more for charity through his foundation.

He thanked the Bishop, the priests and well-wishers for honouring him and danced to melodies of the choir.

St. Louis Primary School pupils also entertained him with a dance presentation in appreciation of what he has done for them.

It was indeed a remarkable day for the people of Uruagu Nnewi. People from all walks of life came to rejoice with the Onwugbenus for their philanthropy and to celebrate the patriarchs’ 60th birthday, his daughter’s traditional marriage and 10th anniversary of the parish he built.

Carter, known as Okpataozuora, recalled how he was attracted to the church. He remembered how he went as far as summoning a meeting of the parish council with then priest Rev. Fr. Pius Ilechukwu under the Archbishop of Onitsha His Grace Most Rev. Dr. A.K Obiefuna to present his proposal which was approved by the bishop. The church took one year to be constructed solely by Chief Louis Carter and was dedicated on December 27, 2003.

He recalled the symbolic change of the church from St. Bartholomew to St. Louis and how it was without hesitation granted by His Lordship, Bishop of Nnewi, Most Rev. Dr. Hillary Odili Okeke.

Overjoyed by that, he started building St. Louis Nursery and Primary School and also bought a giant two-storey building for a secondary school for the church. This multiple project and achievements recorded has put St. Louis Parish in the first grade at the Diocesan level.

Catholic Bishop of Nnewi who delivered the homily at the church advised people to emulate the celebrant who is behind the success of the church by using his wealth to bless people and the church, remembering that he was very glad when the people of St. Louis Parish brought to his notice that a member willingly wants to build the church and wished that many more people could be like Chief Louis Onwugbenu.

He said: “If more people are like the celebrant, Nigeria will be a better place other than those moneybags in government who think only about themselves and what they can gain”.

Bishop Okeke went ahead to praise Governor Peter Obi for his good work in the state and his dedicated interest in education which includes paying pensioners, paying the elderly over 65 years, providing money for school rehabilitation and buying computers, buses and generators for both private and government schools. He also noted that no government has ever done what Peter Obi’s government has done.

Obi who was represented by Commissioner for Education, Dr. Mrs Uju Okeke thanked Chief Louis Carter for all his efforts to boost education in the state.

  • Osun relishes jobs scheme

    Osun relishes jobs scheme

A clearly thought-out job creation scheme is yielding fruit in Osun State and beneficiaries are excited about it. On assumption of office in November 2010, Governor Rauf Aregbesola said something unusual. In 100 days, he said, his administration would provide jobs for 20,000 youths in the state. About 30 days after that declaration, recruitment began and the Osun Youth Employment Scheme (OYES) was born.

Two years on, the first set of cadets has just graduated at a colourful ceremony at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp in Ede, a town of rolling hills in the state. The event was witnessed by a large number of dignitaries from across the country.

Through the scheme, the Aregbesola administration set out to achieve a number of things. One was job creation, to keep unemployed youths out of redundancy and mischief, and by engaging them, strengthen the state economy. Another was to prove that it was possible to employ a significant number of youths in a very short space of time. One other reason for setting up the OYES was to inspire cadets and other Osun residents to value themselves and see dignity in labour and service, and themselves as change agents. Ogbeni Aregbesola captured all that in one word: “Omoluabi”, in local parlance.

At the graduation ceremony, the cadets strutted with confidence, clad in their khaki overalls. In the scheme, many of them learnt to operate the computer and even to repair it. Many can make good quality shoes. A good number can sew. Some others are rearing livestock, poultry and fish. Many are making much-coveted red bricks, and others have mastered the processing of several local meals.

“OYES has helped us by giving us boots to make,” Mr Jimoh Lateef Alani told Newsextra, standing before various well-made footwear on display. “We have been given an opportunity to do something for ourselves. May be government will give us machines when we pass out.”

Miss Temitope Jegede, a computer graduate, is happy to render service to the state as a sheriff guard. In that capacity, alongside other colleagues, she supervises nurses in the hospitals just to ensure that everybody is doing their work well. But she added that her joy is that the scheme has saved her from idleness, or “going here and there,” as she put it. Jegede also emphasised that as sheriff guards, there is no high-handedness or compulsion in their duties, only to ensure that workers are doing their best.

The OYES has made a strong impact on Osogbo, the state capital, as well other parts of the state. Cadets are helping in traffic management and also in ridding the towns and cities of waste.

It is this area that female cadets have surprised many. In five days, women learnt to drive refuse trucks and have been helping to keep the state capital clean. Men also drive the trucks but it is their female counterparts who have stolen the show. Funmilola Adegoke, one of the female drivers, told Newsextra that the scheme has helped her in many ways. So did Hafusat Popoola and Odunmorayo Ilesanmi, other female drivers. As they spoke they exuded the air of contentment, even conscious of the fact that they have demystified a job once done exclusively by men.

Corporate organisations like First Bank are partnering with the state, providing some cash and tools. The World Bank recommended the scheme for adoption by other states.

The Federal Government, interested in the Osun jobs initiative, has also sent a delegation to the state to understudy the scheme.

There are other partners. Firms, institutions of higher learning and trade associations have equally teamed up with the state to expand its skills base. Personnel from Fountain University are training cadets in various skills under the scheme. Textile workers and tailoring associations are providing such training apart from the fact that OYES overalls are made in the state. This is boosting the state economy.

But the tailors themselves are excited for personal reasons. Mr Lateef Adebisi said: “OYES has improved our economy. No government in the state has provided jobs the way Aregbesola’s has. Many tailors have built houses, bought cars and solved many financial problems.”

Mr Femi Ifaturoti, chair of the OYES Implementation Group, said: “We have proved that it is possible to employ 20,000 people.”

Ifaturoti said the cadets were orientated to believe in themselves and carry on the “Omoluabi” spirit, adding that some of them were sent to various parts of the world to be trained. Some went to Cuba, some to Germany, some others to India. The result is an enriched and strengthened work force in the state.

Another set of 20,000 cadets will replace the ones that graduated. Some 18,000 of those who passed out of the scheme are said to have been given permanent jobs in the state.

“The OYES is just one of those instances that confirms how visionary Rauf Aregbesola has been coming up with unique solutions to the problems of Nigeria,” said Mr Semiu Okanlawon, Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy Office of the Governor. “By the time he was developing this unique youth engagement strategy, Nigeria’s problem in terms of youth restiveness had not reached this alarming rate. Yet, he knew that if there is no conscious effort at taking idle hands off the streets, we might just be sitting on a very explosive case. Just imagine each state of the federation engaging 20,000 on this kind of community works. That translates into 20,000 in 36 places apart from Abuja. That alone is enough to put away all these problems of Boko Haram, kidnapping and other criminal activities that are just becoming daily affairs in our national life.”

Aregbesola said: “OYES is not about youth employment alone. It is also about re-inflating the state economy. Our integration policy states that all uniforms, kits and equipments used by OYES should be obtained from markets spread round all local government areas in the state. This has created a value-chain, improved the economy, empowered families and created wealth.”

    Ordega relishes Pitea deal

New Pitea IF of Sweden new acquisition, Francesca Ordega has expressed her happiness at her switch to the club from Russian side, Rossiyanka.

Ordega was signed alongside her Nigerian compatriot and team mate, Desire Oparanozie by the Russian club shortly after their impressive showing at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Japan but a niggling ankle injury she aggravated in the Eastern European land cut short her stint.

Having got another club in Sweden an elated Ordega said she was thrilled to have another opportunity to showcase her God-given talent beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“I am happy for another opportunity I just got. I will grab it with both hands when I eventually join my team next week. It is a fresh start for me and I thank all those that contributed to my new lease of life. I’m grateful.

“I know that I won’t be short of companions because we have many Nigerians in the Swedish League and also I have a senior colleague Faith Ikidi in Pitea. I won’t miss home much,” Ordega explained.

The Makurdi-born striker returned to Nigeria and after recovering from the ankle injury teamed up with her previous club, Rivers Angels to gain match fitness.

Meanwhile, Francesca Ordega’s team mate at Pitea, Faith Ikidi has arrived back in Sweden after her delayed trip in Nigeria to sort out her travel documents.

A source close to the Super Falcons’ defender hinted that the player had since started training for Pitea as they intensify preparation for the new league season.
