  • I’ll remain in APC- Marafa

The senator representing Zamfara Central, Alhaji Kabir Marafa, has said that he and many  other federal lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are not interested in dumping the party  for any reason whatsoever.

Marafa who had been named in various media reports as one of those on their way out of the APC said he has “never entertained any such idea.”

“I don’t know where someone got the idea from; it is very embarrassing to me,” the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) told The Nation.

He added:”I have never discussed such intention with anybody and I do not attend their  (Reformed APC) meetings.

“I have not done anything in that direction so there is no reason why anybody should include my name.”

Emphasizing his commitment to the APC which he joined as a founding member, Senator Marafa expressed confidence that the party will not only overcome current challenges but that it will grow stronger.

  • Why the poor will remain with us

Sir: Being poor literarily means one is unable to get and meet his desires. It is regarded as a state of financial incapacity. We live in a world where poor people dominate the economy. Nigeria as a country has a poverty rate of 67.1% which indicates that majority of citizens are living below the poverty line leaving very few to dwell in affluence.

Government on the other hand sees to the organization as well as welfare of citizens; thus engages in countless number of programmes to ensure that poverty is reduced to the barest minimum. Most times international agencies as well as private bodies come into the equation, to see to it that an item of the sustainable development goal is achieved. Despite these interventions, the average rate of poor people in the community rather than decrease keep increasing by the day

Numerous individuals have been empowered, yet few were able to keep the track of their objective because the mentality of most poor people lies in meeting their daily needs. That is why they tend to increase their consumption with respect to their income once they are empowered, making them find it less desirable to engage in the act of saving. Most of them find these empowerment programmes as comfort zones, causing them to relax forgetting that “what makes one successful doesn’t keep him successful”.

Nigeria is a country endowed with vast arable land yet the youths prefers to be idle as they patiently wait for the comfort of the so-called white collar job. Land is meant to be cultivated to enhance production yet we have concluded in our mind that the occupation called farming is meant for the under-class in the society.

A beneficiary of YOUWIN during the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan regime was given a desired sum of money (about N3 million) alongside necessary equipment to empower a particular number of youths in the area for a period of 3-6months. This individual after receiving the particular sum for the first quarter operated for some time then closed down the venture. Although the venture was said to have closed down because the administration delayed in paying the fixed sum slated for the second quarter, my summation is that the owner of the venture was without vision and passion for the sum given for the first quarter is enough to start a reasonable venture successfully even without stress.

Truth be told, there is no use whatsoever trying to help people who are not ready to help themselves for no one can push anyone up the ladder unless he is ready to climb himself. The truth is most people aspire to become successful; most people termed poor dream to live in affluence. Only that they think they need to acquire much to kick-start their dreams so they decide to do away with the little resources at their disposal. It should be noted that “one who cannot manage little cannot control plenty” for we cannot become what we want by remaining what we are.

  • ‘I remain Iyaloja of Iponri Market’

DEOS Iponri Market in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State have a new Iyaloja? No, says the Iyaloja, Alhaja Mulikat Ajaga, who insisted yesterday that she is still in office.

She was reacting to claims that she had been replaced with a new leader.

Denying the claim at a press briefing at the market, Alhaja Ajaga said: “You only install a new market leader when the incumbent is no more alive.”

She said she is still the Iyaloja, as she was crowned by the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji and given a certificate of authority.

Alhaja Ajaga said: “It will be against tradition for anyone to try what they are saying. You will recall that the market was shut down in February last year, following a crisis, which was looked into, even before the death of Alhaja Mogaji.

“Mama Mogaji waded into the crisis before she passed on. That was when some traders protested at the Lagos State House of Assembly. Mama kicked against the action and asked the market board, led by the present market leader, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, to take over the matter.

“The matter continued until she passed away and the new Iyaloja-General is handling it. She constituted a committee and told me I should step aside and allow the committee to coordinate things till peace is restored.

“I stepped aside, as advised by Mrs Tinubu-Ojo, and allowed the committee to run. The arrangement was for them to work for three months, but three months passed, there was nothing, even eight months passed, there was nothing. There were provocations during this period, but I kept quiet.

“I was in hospital last Wednesday when the traders called me on the phone that armed policemen had invaded the market and that some people were meeting and planning to remove me. I dismissed the information, because I know it’s not possible. But I thank God that I was not around. They thought I would cause crisis, so they brought police to arrest me.”

She appealed to Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos and the state government to intervene.

  • Ejide to remain at Hapoel Beer Sheva

Ejide to remain at Hapoel Beer Sheva

Nigeria international Austin Ejide will stay for a third season at Israeli Premier League high-flyers Hapoel Beer Sheva.

In the summer of 2012, the 30-year-old committed his future to the Camels for two years which ought to elapse at the end of this season. However, there was a clause for option of an additional season in favour of the club which they have triggered.

It stipulated that Austin Ejide must play at least 70 per cent of the team’s matches this season for him to be rewarded with a new deal.

As at March 13, 2014, the Super Eagles safe hands has met and surpassed that target, having been involved in 96 per cent of all the games.

Put in another way, he has missed just one game this season, a meaningless State Cup fixture against Maccabi Shaarayim.

Ejide has spent the last five years in Israel, first representing Hapoel Petah Tikva before his switch to Hapoel Beer Sheva.

  • I remain in PDP, says ex-Akwa Ibom SSG

Former Akwa Ibom State Secretary to the Government Umana Umana has reiterated his commitment to pursue his governorship aspiration under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former SSG said yesterday he has never nursed the intention to join the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umana said he was in the battle, with other loyal party members, to ensure that the PDP wins in 2015.

He described as false rumour that he was set to join the APC.

His words: “The story is absolutely false and baseless. I am a committed and loyal member of the PDP. I have no intention of leaving the party to APC or to any other party.

“I am working hard with other committed and loyal party men and women to make the party even stronger at all levels.”

Also reacting to the story , a group, Ibom Medallion, described the insinuation as the handiwork of those who are terrified of the imposing stature of Umana.

The Director-General of Ibom Medallion, Michael Bush, said it was not true that Umana nursed the idea of leaving the PDP.

“How can he contemplate leaving the party when the greater number of members in the state are standing behind him? He has an overwhelming support of the people to aspire to the office of governor.

“It is just one of those idle talks by political jobbers, who daily fear the UOU phenomenon and try by all means possible to deceive Akwa Ibom people.

But I tell you, they have failed and will continue to fail because our people have made up their minds on who they want for governor in 2015.

“No amount of this type of blackmail will stop Umana from pursuing his aspiration to the end on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Bush said.

He challenged those peddling the rumours to “concentrate on their own aspiration and leave the UOU team to continue to take its message to the people.

“The PDP is a party committed to democracy, where the people would, in one voice, decide who would become their governor in 2015.

“I want to ask you, is possible for the front runner in a race to ditch the race midway? How can a man whose support base is daily widening in PDP leave the party? You see, it doesn’t make sense.

“ Umana Okon Umana is the man to beat in the PDP, so he has absolutely no reason to leave the party for APC or any other party.

“I guess those who are circulating that story are those who are no longer comfortable in the PDP, because they have come to realise that UOU has garnered all the support there is to garner in the PDP.

“But I will rather advise them to quit the party, if they want and leave UOU to concentrate on consolidating on the gains of our party in the state and beyond,” Bush said.

  • Remain steadfast, ACN, Boroffice urge supporters

Remain steadfast, ACN, Boroffice urge supporters

The defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ondo State yesterday said it was disappointed by the Supreme Court judgment, which declared Dr. Olusegun Mimiko winner of last October’s governorship election.

It urged the people not to despair, but remain focused on their quest for good governance.

In a statement by its former Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Agbede, the defunct ACN said: “It is unfortunate that the apex court dashed the expectations of the people, who hoped to wriggle out of the maladministration of the Labour Party (LP) government and its attendant pain, poverty and frustration.

“With the avalanche of incontrovertible oral and documentary evidence pointing to a compromised and discredited election, we are at a loss as to why the highest court sacrificed justice on the altar of legal inconsequentialities.

“This verdict is a judicial murder of justice, which is capable of eroding the people’s confidence in the judicial and electoral system. While we are not perturbed by this glaring injustice as we are more than resolute to engender good governance, we are concerned about the fate of the people, who are the main victims of this grievous decision, as they would have to wander through the wilderness of the LP administration’s recklessness for the next three years.”

The defunct party hailed its candidate in the election, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN); his running mate, Dr. Paul Akintelure; and its legal team for their “courage, doggedness and forthrightness” throughout the legal battle.

It urged its members to continue to pursue their goal on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A chieftain of the APC, Senator Ajayi Boroffice (Ondo North District), urged the people to accept the Supreme Court judgment.

He regretted that residents would have to wait for a long time to get “the change they desire”.

Boroffice said: “Leaders of our party, professionals and the people fought a good fight as gallant soldiers of progress. They spoke against policies that would not allow development in their communities.

“They demanded character in leadership and agitated for good governance and rapid industrial development. They wanted jobs and economic prosperity for our people. These were their demands.

“I salute the stoic courage of Akeredolu and his legal team. You have not lost; you have only set an agenda for the new phase of activities in our great party.

“This judgment might have dampened our spirit, but it has not weakened our determination to rescue our state from the clutches of poverty, mass unemployment, corruption, mismanagement of our resources and a wasteful administration.

“We hoped for light but behold obscurity, but we will not relent until we rescue Ondo from vandals and transform it into a state that is economically viable, politically stable and socially secure.

“Let us remain focused in our resolve to produce a progressive government, which will guarantee good governance, democratic institutions, justice, equity and opportunities for our people.”

Boroffice said the people would continue to insist on free and fair elections.

A member of Akeredolu’s legal team, Mr. Victor Olatoyegun, urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, to prosecute the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials responsible for the “illegal injection” of over 100,000 names into the voters’ register used for the election.

He said the “illegal injection” was a novel way of rigging by “compromised” INEC officials and was significant enough to guarantee Mimiko’s victory.

Olatoyegun said: “The Election Petition Tribunal, Appeal and Supreme courts consistently admitted that there were illegal injections of names into the voters’ register.

“But unfortunately, none of the courts had the temerity to annul the election conducted with it, especially when it was obvious that the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2011, were flouted.

“If, indeed, it is impossible to put something on nothing, then it stands to reason that no valid election can come out of the compromised voters’ register.”

The lawyer said the judiciary should be the last hope of the common man and rule against illegalities, without minding whose ox is gored.

He said: “We have heard of phrases like ‘my hands are tight, twelve-two third of 19 states’ before. The recent decision has brought to our judicial page other lexicons, now known as ‘illegal injection into the voters’ registers’ and the petitioner’s need to prove its ‘substantiality’ to invalidate an election.

“The apex court was expected to break the jinx by pronouncing the election conducted with an illegal register null and void, but its decision fell short of the people’s expectation of getting real justice.

“There is still hope for the common man, because the primordial sentiments of a judge are not representative of the general feeling in the legal community.

“It is a crime to unlawfully obliterate, alter or inject names into the voters’ register in the absence of a lawful review of the register. It is against this backdrop that the right of the citizenry to know the perpetrators of this illegal injection of names into the 2012 voters’ register used for the Ondo State governorship election becomes sacrosanct.”

  • Ban on public protests remain, says Rivers police chief

BARELY three days after Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi spoke of a plan to lead a protest to the Government House in Port Harcourt over ceded oil wells, Police Commissioner Mbu Joseph Mbu yesterday warned that the ban on public protests and processions was still in force.

Mbu spoke while presenting his report card in crime-fighting since he assumed duty as the police chief in the oil-rich state in March.

Describing his relationship with Governor Rotimi Amaechi as cordial, the police chief insisted that his men would arrest and prosecute any group, or organisation staging a protest in the state without his approval.

Last month, Mbu announced a ban on all forms of public protests following rising political tension in the state and unending rallies and counter-rallies in the state capital and other city centres.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar reported approved the ban to avoid a full-scale disorder in the state as a result of the crisis rocking the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

He warned that the law would be hard on violators of the order.

The last protest march in the state was by ex-militants in the state. They were led by Ateke Tom, an indigene of Okrika Local Government Area, the hometown of First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan.

Mba said: “The ban on public protest without application and approval by the commissioner of Police remained outlawed in the state. Yesterday (Wednesday), His Excellency and I spoke for about 30 minutes in a very friendly manner, jokingly, just like that. It is the press that is orchestrating these issues because you want to sell your papers.

“Nobody is above the law in Nigeria, nobody is above the law of the land, but I know that His Excellency is not thinking towards that direction.

“This is because His Excellency is the Governor of this state, he is the chief security officer, I’ m just his 2iC. So, until then, we can’t discuss that now.

“Forget about what you people, are writing about the governor and myself; I know you want to sell your papers. Governor is my friend, he is my brother and he is my boss and we are cordial.

“I have said earlier that we spoke for about 30 minutes that day, so it is you the press that is orchestrating and over-blowing the whole thing out of proportion because you want to sell your papers by writing: “the governor say shoot me, how can I shoot my governor; it is not possible.”

Amaechi, who addressed indigenes of Orashi zone from Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni, and Abua/Odual local government areas, who paid him a solidarity visit at the Government House on Tuesday, spoke of his readiness to lead residents on a protest march.

The governor had earlier accused Mba of compromising the state security by leaking secretes to outsiders. He also said the ceding of oil wells belonging to the state to his neighbours was unacceptable.

It was reported that the police had intercepted the group who were coming in several buses on their arrival into Emouha, en route Port Harcourt.

Reacting, Mba said his men were misinformed and that those intercepted were later released to continue their journey.

His words: “We got a call about 1am last Tuesday that some elements, some people were being mobilised to come to Port Harcourt for a public and street protests and we have to stop them.

“Later, His Excellency called me and he told me they were coming on a solidarity visit to the Government House and I told him if they were coming on a solidarity visit to the governor, there is no problem. Then I called the Area Command to allow them to come, I think they came and left.”

  • I remain in ACN, says Adeniji-Adele

Former Lagos State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele yesterday debunked media reports that he was hobnobbing with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He described the speculation as false and reiterated his loyalty to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

In a statement, Adeniji-Adele said he was not privy to the purported defection of Mr. Jimi Agbaje to PDP.

He said: “I deny this speculation with all emphasis at my disposal. I remain in the ACN and will join other members in establishing the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contribute immensely towards its growth and success in all elections.

“I state unequivocally that I have not attended and will not attend any political gathering, function or event other than those of the ACN/APC. In spite of my semi-retirement to my farm in Badagry, I still participate actively in all activities of the ACN in Lagos Island Local Government. I hope this statement lays to rest further speculation about my political involvement.”

  • Shekarau: I remain member of Kano Emirate Council

Former Kano State Governor and the Sardaunan Kano, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, yesterday said his exit from the Kano Emirate Council is temporary and not by resignation.

The Kano Emirate Council had been quoted as saying that Shekarau had resigned his membership of the traditional institution.

The former governor told reporters in Kano that it is not true that he has resigned as the Sarduanan Kano and a member of the Emirate Council.

According to him, he sought the permission of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, to step aside because of the responsibilities he handles for his party, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

He said: “It is now common knowledge that sometime last month my party, the ANPP, assigned to me an onerous task of leading a committee, formed and charged with the responsibility of contacting and discussing with opposition parties. This is with a view to merging and forming a common front to provide Nigerians with an alternative platform that will lead our dear nation to the promised land.

“No doubt, this is a task that will involve a lot of travels and holding meetings nation-wide. I, therefore, felt that I will definitely not have enough time to attend and participate fully in the Emirate Council’s meetings.

“Upon this, I consequently wrote a letter to His Highness, the Emir of Kano, requesting for permission to withdraw (temporarily) from attending the Emirate Council’s meetings. This was to enable me concentrate on the new national assignment given to me by my party.

“His Royal Highness has already replied, accepting my request. This has nothing to do with my position and functions as Sardaunan Kano.

“I wish, therefore, to make it very clear that I, Ibrahim Shekarau, am still holding my position as Sardaunan Kano and will continue to exercise all known traditional rites, roles and functions associated with the traditional title.”
