Remi Tinubu @63: A stylish smart highflier

She is stylish. She is smart and undoubtedly a highflier. Happy hearty cheers to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who turns 63 tomorrow. Whether in traditional or English attire, Mrs. Tinubu is an African paragon, and one with a heart of gold, EVELYN OSAGIE writes

History has a myriad of incredible women whose lives are embodiments of inspiration. They not only strive to make their mark, they become, by their very acts, a beacon of hope to generations after them. Nigerian women, from the ancient to modern times, deserve a place in this historic canvas. There are those who have simply become legends, just as there are those whose names evoke a deep sense of industry and service, while some are noted for their fearless commitment to rights advocacy.

Take the inimitable Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (activist, teacher, political campaigner, and founder of the Nigerian Women’s Union); or Margaret Ekpo (Nigeria’s first female political activist); Florence Nwanzuruahu Nkiru Nwapa (the first female writer); General Aderonke Kale (first Nigerian female Army Major-General); and Virginia Etiaba (the first female governor in Nigeria’s history).

Let’s also call to mind Grace Alele Williams (the first female vice-chancellor in Nigeria); Folake  Solanke (the first female lawyer and first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN); Captain Chinyere Onyenaucheya (Nigeria’s first female pilot ); and Ire Aderinokun (first Nigerian woman to become Google development expert).

Without doubt, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has earned her epaulets, and can be named among this pantheon of great Nigerian women. In her simple and uncomplicated ways, she is a trailblazer.

She is called the Lioness of Bourdillon not only because her husband, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been given the alternate appellation worthy of a man of great power and political influence. Born on September 21, 1960, Mrs. Tinubu (CON, OON) is part of the fair number of women politicians that have been able to distinguish themselves in different areas of national life. Beyond the value she adds to the different public offices she has occupied, she is fashionable and always gorgeously dressed.

We take a look at this political, fashion icon in today’s Woman of Substance.

     Her politics

Although some critics believe the office of the first lady is one, which many consider ‘unconstitutional’, in Nigeria, the role was popularised by the late Maryam Babangida through her Family Support Programme (FSP). She is one first lady that has consistently made her mark in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Mrs. Tinubu has shown over the years that she understands the nuances of such intangible engagements and how far they can go in fostering a sense of community and fellowship, which in turn can catalyse great achievements on both individual and collective levels. From her days as the number one woman in Lagos State (1999 to 2007) when her husband was governor through her years as a senator, to becoming Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Tinubu’s mark in Nigeria’s political scene has been innovative. She shares common traits with the remarkable US First Lady, Hillary Clinton, who went on to become a US Senator and even made history as the first female presidential candidate of Democratic Party in that country.

She is a three-term Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District at the Nigerian National Assembly from 2011 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Her impact and influence transcend her performance in lawmaking or the provision of materials or succour to her constituents.

     Her style

Articulate and beautiful yet immaculate and simple, the First Lady mostly appears in native attires. Her fashion sense has been described as one reflecting class and glamour. She never fails to capture the hearts.  Her simplicity has been attributed to her spirituality. Whether dressed in traditional attires of different colours, she compliments most of her outfits with elegant jewellery and head gear, popularly known as ‘gele’; and a matching smile that adds glimmer to her look and dressing. She is usually decked in stylish gowns and on other occasions, she wears attractive lace wrappers and blouses.

       Her advocacies

When it comes to governance, the little things – the emblematic gesture, the show of compassion and commonality, the championing of good causes that lifts morale, goes a long way. Even more impactful is her constant drive for unity of purpose and innovative collaboration among individuals and groups (including non-governmental organisations, intergovernmental bodies and faith-based organisations) working to empower women and advance their rights in society. Her passions on education alongside youth and women empowerment have been linked to her background as an educationist and her spiritual devotion as pastor of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

As the then first lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Tinubu instituted quite a number of welfare packages, especially for women and children that won her the admiration of many Lagosians. Many also fell in love with her passion and compassion for humanity, as expressed, particularly, through her New Era Foundation, which was dedicated to ‘all round development of young ones and promotion of public awareness on environmental health and community service’.

Under the auspices of her pet project, Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Tinubu remains a firm believer in investing in human capital, and has continued her passionate commitment towards positively impacting the lives of women and children. She recently donated N500 million to 500 families affected by the recent violent conflicts in Plateau State.

And she has made bold statements to better the lives of Nigerians through RHI, which shows where her heart lies. Hear her: “The mission of RHI is better life for all families; there is no family that will say that they don’t need a better life. A lot of people have been saying different things about the way the fuel subsidy removal affects them but we know those people whose shoes actually pinches.

“These are the people we want to reach out to and see how we can help families. This is the reason why the RHI is focusing on agriculture, education, health, economic empowerment and social investment. When we build lives, we are actually building a nation, because if every life is happy, they will be able to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation and Nigeria has great prospects.”

And as she marks her 63 years birthday tomorrow, it is hoped that her trailblazing impact will continue to blossom.

  • Lagos Polls: Don’t complain if you didn’t vote, says Remi Tinubu

Lagos Polls: Don’t complain if you didn’t vote, says Remi Tinubu

Senactor Oluremi Tinubu on Saturday said that eligible voters in Lagos State who did not cast their votes in the local government elections would not be justified to complain against local councils. Oluremi, representing Lagos Central, said this in Lagos in an interview with journalists in her residence in Bourdillon, Ikoyi. The wife of a former Governor of the State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bola Tinubu, spoke with newsmen after casting her vote. “This is the time to show solidarity for the government; we believe that this government is working; this is the time that everybody should perform his/her civic duty,’’ she said. The senator said that voting was a way to hold governments accountable. “It is not for you but for your generation yet unborn so that things can be put in place. “We have set the standard in Lagos; every elected candidate does not have any choice but to work,’’ she said. She said that she had been working as a people’s representative for the past six years and would continue to do so till the end of her tenure. Mrs Tinubu commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for efforts in conducting the polls. “LASIEC has done well; security personnel are on ground ensuring that there is peace and order.’’ Also, the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, who voted at Ward E, Olonade Street, Yaba LGA, commended voters who turned out in spite of the downpour. “Voters have shown support for democracy by coming to vote in spite of the rain. “Starting the election behind schedule is understandable due to the downpour; it is impressive. “I believe that APC will carry the day,’’ he said. Mr Jide Jimoh, representing Lagos Mainland in the House of Representatives, told journalists that the elections had been peaceful. “The election process is fantastic so far, and I commend the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for that. “I won’t want to make any judgment on LASIEC because we are just starting. Taking off does not matter; it is landing that is the most important thing. “We have taken off; at the end of the day, we will see the result. I expect a positive result,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • Easter, another opportunity for Nigeria’s redemption, says Sen. Tinubu

Easter, another opportunity for Nigeria’s redemption, says Sen. Tinubu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, on Sunday felicitated with Christians at Easter, saying it was another opportunity to redeem the nation from the throes of challenges that had plagued her.

Tinubu in her Easter message entitled – ‘A Second Chance’, said that it was another chance to set in motion the change that each person would like to see, and build the nation.

”We must lovingly accept one another, extending a helping hand to those around us, regardless of religious affiliations and belief. In this moment, more than ever, we must strive to be more like Jesus.

”For us as a nation, it is also a second chance to redeem our nation from the throes of the challenges which have plagued her.

”A second chance to set in motion the change we would each like to see, and to build the Nigeria of our dreams, ”she said.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to strive to be more like Jesus who died to redeem mankind.

” The death of Jesus to pay a debt he did not owe, for the salvation of you and I, is the ultimate story of a second chance at redemption. This is the crux of our faith, the proof of God’s love for mankind and the centre of Christianity.

”This second chance is our hope of freedom. We must not live in fear, depression or like those who do not know that Christ is risen.
”We must proclaim the resurrection of Christ in our daily lives, actions and conduct,” she said. (NAN)

  • What Zamfara man saw in Remi Tinubu four days ago

What Zamfara man saw in Remi Tinubu four days ago

While in Lagos four days ago, I saw and monitored something really strange in Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

But before going into that Wednesday, November 25, 2015 experience, let me share that I hail from Zamfara State even though passionately working in Borno State.  I’m a young journalist by education and profession, have practiced in the north and the southern parts of Nigeria for a major Newspaper. I’m so proud of my profession. Given my kind of job, I have met different categories of persons from those at the bottom to those at the top whether as news makers, news sources, witnesses or for social and other human interactions.

For the purpose of this small piece, I want to make reference to my interactions with VIPs, the ‘Ogas at the top’. Some times,  VIPs or important personalities as one may choose to call them, invite journalists to their homes to grant interviews or hold press briefings while in not too often cases, the journalists themselves request for interviews at homes of VIPs or to source  information that can make or add up to major news items. These mostly happen during weekends, outside working hours or when VIPs want to avoid office interferences.

Now, in the course of meeting these VIPs, I had at different times come across their wives too. One common feature in the wives of many VIPs is their display of authority. One minute contact with them tells you they own the house because as they step out, everyone around feels uneasy. Some, if not many wives of VIPs represent fear and danger. They are regarded as angels of death by domestic helps i.e drivers, cooks, gardeners, cleaners and aides to the boss himself. Visitors tend to avoid wives of VIPs except certain class of visitors that are very well known to the VIPs’ wives. Many times, wives of VIPs as I have seen them, are emperors. They harass aides and house helps with commands that are designed to make aides develop running stomach. They are feared so much that house helps celebrate when they travel or stay out for long. However, I have also come across some very humble and hospitable wives of VIPs. One of them is the wife of former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri. That woman is completely humble and kind from my point of view. I met her three times: in 2006, 2007 and 2010. But three days ago, I saw something entirely different in another VIP’s wife.

On return to Lagos last Wednesday, after traveling to Ikenne for the funeral of H.I.D Awolowo earlier in the day, six Governors, Kashim Shettima of Borno, Yari of Zamfara, Tambuwal of Sokoto and their colleagues from Jigawa, Kebbi and Cross River followed national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to his residence at Bourdillon road in Ikoyi. I was there as an aide to Governor Shettima without knowing I would be compelled to write this piece.

Soon after the bus conveying the  dignitaries arrived Asiwaju’s residence, I saw Senator Oluremi Tinubu rushing out of the bus, walking fast almost with so much focus, it was clear she had something in mind. She walked ahead of her husband and all the Governors. She was wearing a light blue wrapper with pictures of the late H.I.D Awolowo which was worn by majority of sympathizers at the funeral. It was ‘Ashiobi’ (ceremonial uniform, usually for one occasion). Asiwaju followed up and stepped into the house alongside the six Governors. While the Governors went into an inner parlor beyond the main and bigger living room, I saw Mrs Oluremi Tinubu went straight to the dining area located by the left side on entering the main living room. Without even changing into normal dress, away from the ‘Ashiobi’,  the first thing she did was to start cleaning dishes, I watched her cleaned over ten dishes without any ‘ajebota-like-attitude’. Then, she started rearranging food items set by aides on the dining table. I took exceptional notice of how she was working with house helps, I saw so much willingness, freedom and excitement on the faces of those helps. I noticed that whenever she wanted to ask them to do anything at all, she would start by saying, ‘jowo’ – the Yoruba way of saying ‘please’ and after they did anything she asked them to do, she repeatedly and naturally said, ‘O se’ meaning ‘thank you’. She effectively combined humility, politeness  and efficiency in managing her home. In less than five minutes of her arrival, Oluremi had set the table. One Governor I wouldn’t mention, sneaked onto the dining table very quickly. Asiwaju sighted him and jokingly said, “Your Excellencies, one Governor is cheating all of us on the dining table”. The Governors happily and I say, so freely, walked to the dining area onto the waiting cheerfulness of Mrs Tinubu who practically left no one in doubt that she was very excited to serve. She coordinated the lunch with so much passion like you would think of a typical and very dedicated and polite Nigerian woman that manages her own restaurant and doing everything to satisfy customers.

My initial thought was that Mrs Tinubu was being dutiful to her husband’s special guests but then I saw her carry about four used glasses. Do you know who used those glasses she picked? She actually picked them from the visitors’ waiting parlour which was by the right after a security scanner and those glasses were used by security aides to Governors. She insisted on picking the glasses even when the security aides were hesitant. Importantly, one could see that she was not faking her actions, she was unconsciously being herself.

For almost two hours, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu walked around doing things herself and cheerfully directing her aides to meet the needs of guests. Oluremi was everywhere including outside asking if food was served drivers and police escorts.

I saw her around 2:55pm carrying a tray with tea cups and saucers. She went  into an inner parlour with the tray. She must have  gone to serve the Governors and her husband. I noticed also that she took special interest in serving and interacting with a Senator from Borno State who was there with the Governor. Oluremi was obviously passionate about her colleague in the Senate.

After she had served tea, I spotted her talking to one of her house helps asking him to serve everyone another round of drinks. As she gave them tasks, I could see that the workers were happy with her. Some of them were even teasing her. She was behaving like a mother in the midst of her loving adult children on a happy day. The interaction between Oluremi and her aides was something so uniquely interesting. While still admiring Oluremi’s hospitality that Wednesday, a senior aide to Governor Shettima told me about his previous encounter with the former Lagos first lady and wife to one of Nigeria’s most influential politicians, on Saturday, February 8, 2014.

“If you remember, we came here with Oga (Governor Shettima) in 2014, in the build up to the 2015 elections when Asiwaju invited Oga here for a meeting. We (aides to the Governor) were sitted here at the parlor and to our surprise, she (Oluremi Tinubu) came and personally served each of us with refreshments. We were shocked given the fact that her husband was actually the bigger boss as leader of the APC which is the party of our boss who was going for second term election. That day we came, her messengers were playing with her and she was so free with them. The woman is just down to earth,” he said to me.

As I ran through the qualities in Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, I concluded that Asiwaju’s great sense of judgment transcends politics because it takes so much wisdom for a man not only to marry a good woman but for the same man to be rich and powerful, yet have his wife retain her humility and Africanness even in the midst of wealth, power and influence that is known to have ruined many.
