Two years of Renewed Hope Initiative: Benue feels impact

    • By Bridget Ikyado-Tikyaa

July 29th 2025 will remain a remarkable day in the lives of Benue indigenous, as the first lady of Nigeria,Her Excellency , Sen Remi Tinubu in a remarkable way paid a condolence visit to the Benue family on the act of terror that befell the people by armed herders in the village of Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area where over 200 persons were murdered , scores left wounded , while  most families  comprising of women and children displaced.

While, Mrs. Tinubu  condoled Governor Alia, Tor Tiv and the people of the state over the recent massacre at Yelewata,on behalf of the Governing Council of the Renewed Hope Initiative donated the sum of N1billion to help rebuild and resettle displaced families who loss lives and property in tragedies perpetrated by marauding armed herders.

She prayed and blessed the people of Benue for holding on ,as God would fix all as we humanly tried our best

The first lady warned all perpetrators of those acts to desist or face the wrath of God,as the blood of victims have cried to God already.

When Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, Nigeria’s First Lady, introduced the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) nearly two years ago, it was more than a promise—it was a bold blueprint for nationwide transformation. Designed to uplift women, youth, and vulnerable populations. The Initiative has since blossomed into a powerful agent of change, touching lives in rural villages, urban markets, and schoolyards across Nigeria.

This is also manifested in Benue State, where Scholastica Ben-Sor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs to the Governor and Coordinator of the RHi is also advancing women’s empowerment, driving transformation and promoting gender equality and grassroots progress.

At the national level, the RHi intervention can be heard in the rustle of maize leaves on school farms, the chatter in market stalls, and the silent pride of women who are now business owners. In agriculture, the Initiative has planted real roots—empowering 20 women farmers with grants of N500,000 each, and training 80 more in modern farming techniques. It’s a quiet revolution—one that’s growing food, livelihoods, and dignity.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Youth Agricultural Programme is set to bring 100 fresh beneficiaries into the fold, with 60% of opportunities reserved for women. The program marks a shift toward gender-inclusive commercial farming, readying a new generation of agripreneurs.

One of the most celebrated successes is the “Every Home A Garden” competition. More than a beautification project, the initiative strengthens food security and family nutrition. In 2024, Veronica Kidata Mabaya of Borno State—a 62-year-old retiree—emerged the national winner, walking away with a remarkable N25 million prize. Her home garden, a lush testament to resilience, was joined by victories from Lagos and the FCT.

Meanwhile, schools are turning into nurseries of hope, as the Young Farmers Club takes root across the country. In Benue State, preparations are underway to launch its own chapter, backed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and RHI, which are equipping schools with starter kits that include everything from farming handbooks to watering cans.

Education has been another pillar of RHI’s work, with interventions both broad and deep. In Benue State, 60,000 exercise books have found their way into the hands of eager students. Even more transformative is the award of 200 scholarships nationwide for talented girls—including six from Benue—to attend the prestigious Africa School of Economics, an institution affiliated with Princeton University.

In a bold step toward digital inclusion, RHI has partnered with NITDA and Huawei to train women in ICT. The beneficiaries not only graduated with new tech skills but also received laptops and startup capital. In Vandeikya, Benue State, a modern ICT center—currently under construction—stands as a beacon for future learning and innovation.

These educational gains are further reinforced by 227 new bursaries slated for mostly female students studying to become teachers, ensuring that classrooms across Nigeria will be filled with empowered educators.

At the heart of RHI lies compassion—especially for the elderly. Through the RHI Elderly Support Scheme, 250 older citizens in each state and the FCT received N100,000 in 2023. That support doubled in the following year, along with medical screenings, eyeglasses, and essential medicines. These efforts have restored dignity and health to thousands who once felt invisible.

If you conclude that the First Lady is empowering the underserved, you will be right. Economic empowerment is a central tenet of RHI. In Benue alone, 500 women received vital business equipment—freezers, grinding machines, and more—to boost their income-generating activities. Across Nigeria, RHI’s Recapitalization Grant has reached 1,000 petty traders per state, offering them the financial means to restock and expand their small businesses. In Benue, the program’s 2024 flag-off was met with excitement and gratitude.

Reshaping social investment is key in this endeavor. Perhaps one of RHI’s most ambitious undertakings has been its contribution to social infrastructure. In collaboration with NIMC, UNICEF, and other partners, RHI helped spearhead the largest birth registration drive in Nigerian history—ensuring that every child, regardless of location, has access to identity and the benefits of citizenship.

The Initiative has also led crucial food and clothing outreaches—reaching orphanages, widows, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and underserved communities. In Benue, 1,500 people received vibrant “One Nigeria Unity Fabrics,” while toys and clothing brought smiles to children in IDP camps.

She said the provision of sanitary pads for the girl child , especially those in the IDPS was underway,as proper hygiene and well-being of the girl child was paramount too st the RHI.

The success of RHI would not be possible without its strong network of collaborators. Federal ministries, international organizations like UNICEF and Huawei, and state governments have all played pivotal roles. Notably, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has offered unwavering support, enabling smooth implementation of RHI programs across the state as he acknowledged the initiative’s stand to help curb insecurity in the state and more.

It has been a renewed hope for all. Two years in, the Renewed Hope Initiative has become more than a policy—it’s a movement. From classroom desks to farmland ridges, from freezers humming in market stalls to garden beds blooming in front yards, RHI has woven itself into the daily lives of Nigerians.

As 2025 unfolds, RHI is poised for even greater reach. More programs are in the pipeline, promising broader coverage and deeper impact. One thing remains certain: the seeds of hope planted since 2023 are thriving, and their harvest is one of prosperity, unity, and restored dignity—for all Nigerians.

Back in Benue State, Hon. Scholastica as Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, has facilitated the disbursement of N500,000 agricultural grant for 20 women farmers, and has been promoting the “Every Home A Garden” competition to enhance household food security and spotlight local innovation. Her stewardship helped Benue women actively compete and benefit on the national stage.

Beyond state borders, Ben-Sor represented Benue at a youth innovation seminar in Beijing, China, where she laid groundwork for future collaboration in ICT, agribusiness, and healthcare technology—further integrating global best practices into local development plans.

Her domestic advocacy has been equally impactful. She co-hosted the Girl Child Day celebration, initiated new women entrepreneurship programs, secured empowerment opportunities for widows, and integrated over 100 vulnerable individuals into the state’s social welfare register. Her proactive role in national forums on gender-based violence (GBV) also brought Benue into key policy dialogues and partnerships with international agencies.

Ben-Sor’s compassionate leadership is evident in her focus on elder care. Through the RHI Elderly Support Scheme, she ensured the successful support of 250 elderly citizens in Benue, and her assessments of welfare facilities across the state have led to tangible improvement plans.

Recognising the need for institutional synergy, she also established the Benue State Advisers Forum—a platform for inter-adviser collaboration, research sharing, and policy innovation, thereby strengthening the machinery of governance.

Through these multidimensional efforts, Hon. Scholastica Ben-Sor has elevated the voices of Benue women—driving social justice, economic empowerment, and inclusive governance at every level. Her leadership continues to align seamlessly with the vision of the Renewed Hope Initiative, affirming that when women lead with purpose, the entire community wil rise.

First Lady’s RHI empowers 300 women, young farmers in Ogun

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday empowered 300 women and young farmers in Ogun State.

Her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) conducted the empowerment under its agricultural support initiative to boost food security and sustainable development.

The programme, which was coordinated by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, involved the distribution of seeds, seedlings, birds, fingerlings, fertilisers, milling machines, among other farm tools, to the beneficiaries.

It was in furtherance of RHI’s “Every Home a Garden”; “Women in Agriculture” and “Youths in Agriculture” programmes.

The exercise also coincided with the launch of RHI’s expanded Agricultural Support Programme at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital, by Mrs. Abiodun.

The governor’s wife said the intervention demonstrated the First Lady’s commitment to agriculture and food production.

She hailed the farmers for their daily labour to sustain the economy and nourish fellow beings.

Mrs. Abiodun showered encomiums on Senator Tinubu for her visionary leadership and resolve to continually touch lives across the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

She said: “The intervention is a commitment to transform agriculture in Nigeria — through the rollout of three powerful initiatives: the Young Farmers’ Initiative, Every Home a Garden, and Women in Agriculture.

“These programmes are not just agricultural interventions; they are strategic investments in our future. They are designed to enhance food security, create employment, and reduce poverty — all of which are central to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Globally, agriculture remains one of the most effective tools for sustainable development — as recognised by the World Bank, which continues to affirm that growth in the agriculture sector is two to four times more effective in raising incomes among the poorest than growth in other sectors.

“I salute our farmers and farmers’ associations whose daily labour sustains our economy and nourishes our people. Whether you are a small holder farmer on your small half-plot or a big-time farmer, we appreciate all your efforts in feeding our people and pledge our support to you under this programme.

“The work we are doing is not just cultivating crops but a future productivity and self-reliance for our people.”

500 Rivers women receive support from SDG office, RHI

Five hundred women drawn from the 23 council areas of Rivers State on Friday received empowerment tools in support of their various businesses.

The empowerment scheme was a joint initiative of the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

The event, which forms part of a nationwide empowerment drive, aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving key Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

This was contained in a statement on Saturday by Desmond Utomwen, Special Assistant Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, at the OSSAP-SDGs

Designed to combat poverty and promote economic independence among vulnerable women, the initiative delivered a range of practical tools to support small-scale enterprises.

Amid songs of thanksgiving and spontaneous celebration, beneficiaries received deep-chest freezers, gas cookers with ovens, portable generators, and industrial grinding machines—items many described as life-changing.

One of the recipients, Tina Pepple, could hardly contain her joy, saying “this is a miracle that would change my life.

“With this, I can support my family. I thank our mother, the First Lady, and the SDGs Office for remembering us”, she said.

Similar sentiments were echoed by other beneficiaries including Blessing Dickson, Kariba Dives, Doris Jaja, Stella Ohochukwu, Gloria A. Kuki, and Salome Ohochukwu, who showered praises on the organizers for their impactful gesture.

Representing the First Lady at the event, Dr. Theresa Ibas, wife of the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, reaffirmed the commitment of Senator Tinubu to women’s empowerment as a cornerstone of national development.

“Today, we are equipping our women with essential tools to build successful businesses and contribute to our nation’s prosperity. These are not mere items—they are seeds of economic revival meant to help women break free from the cycle of poverty”, Dr. Ibas said.

She also linked the empowerment programme to global development priorities.

“Women’s empowerment is central to achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals, especially gender equality and economic growth. Use these tools wisely. Let them prosper in your hands and become the foundation for a better future”, she emphasized.

Dr. Ibas further praised OSSAP-SDGs for providing both technical expertise and financial structure to implement such targeted interventions effectively.

In her remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, described the programme as a strategic intervention aimed at unlocking women’s potential across Nigeria.

“Today’s programme is not just about distributing empowerment items; it is about creating opportunities for women to thrive.

“By equipping 500 women per state and the FCT with tools such as gas cookers, generators, freezers, and grinding machines, we are strengthening their capacity to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to inclusive national development”, she stated.

Orelope-Adefulire also noted that the initiative exemplifies President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable economic growth through partnerships that reach the grassroots.

The empowerment event in Rivers State is one in a series of similar programmes being carried out across Nigeria, as the Renewed Hope Initiative and the OSSAP-SDGs continue to collaborate in uplifting lives and advancing national development through practical, women-focused interventions.

As the event concluded, a wave of optimism swept through the crowd—proof that for many women in Rivers State, a new chapter of economic empowerment had just begun.

The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria has called for understanding after nursing students in Delta State faced disciplinary action for their “light-hearted” chants during her visit this week.

The incident occurred during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits to midwives at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba on Tuesday.

While the event was meant to boost morale among healthcare workers, a viral video showed students from Delta State College of Nursing Sciences adding a playful twist to their welcome song.

In a statement released yesterday, the First Lady’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, acknowledged the students’ enthusiasm but emphasised the importance of balancing discipline with free expression.

“While we respect the right of institutions to uphold discipline, it is important to recognise that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a light-hearted and jovial manner,” the statement said.

The First Lady’s office clarified that the event was intended to inspire midwives and reduce maternal mortality, praising the Delta State Government and attendees for their warm reception.

First Lady unveils Renewed Hope Initiative’s plans for 2025

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has outlined her plans for women and youth empowerment in the course of the year under her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Mrs. Tinubu laid bare the initiative’s plans for the year while speaking at the first-quarter high-level meeting of the RHI in her office at the State House in Abuja.

The First Lady emphasised her commitment to improving hygiene, environmental sustainability, and economic support for vulnerable groups.

To boost young girls’ confidence and hygiene, she announced plans to distribute 370,000 cartons of sanitary towels across the country.

Mrs. Tinubu explained that the initiative, which she named “Flow in Confidence,” aims to ensure that girls are not distracted during their menstrual cycle.

“You have been helping with reusable sanitary towels, but for me, I can’t really understand it. Some of the girls, when their flow is not heavy, can use the reusable ones, but they have to be properly sanitised,” she told the governors’ wives.

The First Lady said her discussions with medical experts influenced the decision to provide disposable sanitary towels, stressing that an improper use of reusable ones could affect fertility.

Each state, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will receive 10,000 cartons of sanitary towels for free distribution with particular focus on rural communities.

“When we launch the initiative, I would like you to hand over a carton to each girl that attends,” she told the governors’ wives.

To promote local production, Mrs. Tinubu announced that the sanitary towels would be manufactured in Lagos and Abuja-based factories.

“We are working with a factory in Lagos, and there is another one in Abuja. We will see how soon they can get us 370,000 cartons,” she added.

The First Lady also announced a collaboration between RHI and the Federal Ministry of Environment to address Nigeria’s growing plastic waste crisis.

“I have traveled around the states and noticed the appalling rate of plastic waste. It is now defacing the beauty of our cities. The President is also encouraging us to do something about it,” Mrs. Tinubu said.

As part of this effort, the First Lady unveiled plans to introduce Environment Climate Change Clubs in secondary schools and Environment Climate Change Societies in tertiary institutions to instill a culture of cleanliness and sustainability among young Nigerians.

Mrs. Tinubu also announced plans to support persons with disabilities (PWDs) in various businesses through the RHI Social Investment Programme.

  • Renewed hope indeed

    Renewed hope indeed

    • Agric component of the initiative by the First Lady a welcome boost

Revitalising the country’s agricultural sector to break the over-reliance of the country on a mono-product, oil, diversify the economy, enhance domestic food productivity and stimulate agro-allied industrialisation is a cardinal component of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) that constituted President Bola Tinubu’s manifesto in his campaign for the country’s apex political office. This objective became even more imperative when, on assumption of office in May, last year, the administration announced the removal of fuel subsidy and the market spontaneously responded with astronomical rise in prices of basic necessities, inflicting considerable pains on large numbers of Nigerians.

Escalating food costs is a dominant component of the inflationary spirals that have made life hardly bearable for Nigerians as the administration implements painful but inevitable reforms. A number of measures, including the recalibration of fiscal and monetary policies, institutionalisation and better grounding of palliatives succour as well as initiation of diverse agricultural policies to enhance food production are beginning to bear fruit and offer positive hope for the future.

One of the commendable proactive responses to the current food costs crisis with tremendous potential of positively impacting agricultural productivity in the near future is the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Women Agricultural Support Programme launched across five of the six geo-political zones of the country by Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of President Tinubu. The initiative, which has been launched in the South-West, South-East, North-West, North-East and North-Central zones, is aimed essentially at actualising the potential of women and the physically challenged in enhancing food productivity in the country.

While the Office of the First Lady coordinates the programme centrally, the wife of the governor in each state oversees the implementation of the initiative within her jurisdictional sphere. When personally flagging off the programme for the South-West in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Mrs Tinubu announced that the initiative encapsulates the donation of a grant of N500,000 each for 20 women farmers in each of the South-West states of Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun states. Another component of the initiative is a grant of N100,000 each for one hundred people living with disabilities in each of these states, to recapitalise their businesses. These measures, which will be replicated across the six geo-political zones will no doubt mark a considerable injection of funds to stimulate the local economies. Again, pre-identified 80 women farmers in each state for agricultural support programme would be beneficiaries.

Giving an indication of the future trajectory of the RHI, Mrs Tinubu disclosed that plans have been laid down to cooperate with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to empower farmers under the programme and that 75% of the beneficiaries will be young female farmers while 25% will be young male farmers. Stressing that those in these categories will be specially identified, trained and empowered to engage in productive activities, Mrs Tinubu urged women farmers in particular to seize the opportunity to recapitalise their businesses, expand their agricultural ventures and contribute to local and national food production.

Experts have noted that the contribution of women to the agricultural sector in Nigeria is largely underestimated as Nigerian women make up about 70% of the country’s farmers while they also contribute approximately 70% of the country’s food production. In most parts of the country, women are active in rearing poultry and small livestock, growing food crops, tending animals, processing and preparing food as well as engaging in trade and marketing, among others. This programme acquires added significance because it has been proven that empowering women and enhancing their productive capacity contributes considerably to achieving a substantial decline in income and multidimensional poverty.

Renewed Hope initiative: Beneficiaries receive N100,000, other items in Edo

No fewer than one hundred and ten elderly, aged between 65 to 95, in Edo South Senatorial District, yesterday each received N100,000 support, a bag of rice and a combo pack.

The special gifts were from the Renewed Hope Initiative Empowerment for the Elderly by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The wife of Edo governor, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, in Benin, disclosed that the elderly first went for their vitals, health and eye checks, before proceeding to where they received their empowerment items.

Mrs. Obaseki noted that the initiative of Nigeria’s First Lady was beyond party lines, while touching the needs of the people, thereby necessitating her collaboration.

Edo governor’s wife stated that the senior citizens, who were mostly overlooked, were being remembered by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which she described as a gesture she hoped would continue, particularly with the current economic situation of the country.

The beneficiaries mostly responded with prayers for the President, his wife and Nigeria.
