Wikki target Babaganaru as Maikaba’s replacement

According to a leak gathered by SportingLife, the management of Wikki Tourits of Bauchi has identified former Kano Pillars gaffer, Mohammed Baba Ganaru as its main target for the technical adviser position.

The Bauchi-based side sees Ganaru as the ideal  candidate to replace its former technical adviser, Abdul Maikaba who left the club last Friday.

A source told SportingLife that Ganaru’s continental and Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) experience is being considered by the management as a yardstick to bring him into the team.

SportingLife had exclusively reported on Sunday that Maikaba will sign a deal with Akwa United on Wednesday.

“All options are on the table for the management to take. We have to move on from Maikaba’s exit and plan for the progress of the club. We can’t stop Maikaba when he said he is leaving the club. He kept us in the dark for a very long time before he finally came out to tell us his decision.

“Coach Baba Ganaru has been shortlisted as a good replacement for Maikaba. He has been in the continental assignment before and he has won the premier league twice so we are looking towards his direction at the moment,” a source disclosed to SportingLife.

  • We will get Edibi’s replacement – NRA

We will get Edibi’s replacement – NRA

Tade Azeez, the President of Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), on Thursday said the association would soon have replacements for Nigeria’s Peter Edibi on the international scene after his retirement.

Azeez told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that many referees were already undergoing training to replace the international referee with his retirement approaching.

“We have many other referees undergoing training to do better than Edibi. The issue of Edibi getting there is not a day thing.

“He rose from grass to grace to get to where he is now and we know we can work on others to achieve much more than what Edibi achieved.

“So, very soon, we will have replacements for him at the international scene,’’ the NRA president said.

NAN reports that Edibi, who became international since 2004, is the most successful Nigerian referee after officiating in a series of continental and global tournaments – mostly as an assistant referee.

Born on Jan. 5, 1970, he would be retiring in December after attaining 45 years of age.

The referees’ boss, however, noted that though Edibi would stop officiating, he would still be useful in training other Nigerian referees to be better than him.

He said the Ikom-born referee still had a lot to offer the Nigerian referee family.

“For him, he has a lot to give in; to whom much is given, much is expected. He was raised and built by some people, so he has a lot to do in also bringing up a lot of referees.

“He has a place in our Training and Assessment Group; he has a place in our list of Referees’ Assessors Group, and also one of our resource persons in the technical part of refereeing.

“So, while we are training our referees, he has to bring his knowledge and experience to bear and impart it onto other.

“Edibe has a lot to offer us. We might not see him carrying the flag around again, but I can assure you he has so much to offer us,” Azeez said.

NAN reports that Edibi, who is one of the 28 Nigerian FIFA referees, became a referee at the age of 13.

He got his Grade Three Referees Certificate at age 17; the Grade Two in 1989 at age 19, and the Grade One certificate three years later at the age of 22.

It was the latter Grade One certificate that qualified him to officiate in the Nigerian domestic league.

His performance earned him a Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nomination and enlisting as a FIFA graded assistant referee in 2004.

Edibi began his journey to the top when he was selected to run the lines at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ghana.

He was subsequently picked for the 2010 edition in Angola and the 2012 finals co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, as well as the 2013 tournament hosted by South Africa, which Nigeria won.

He was one of the match officials at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey and Morocco 2013 FIFA Club World Cup.

He also made it to AFCON 2015 in Equatorial Guinea but would have reached the peak of his career in 2014 if he was picked for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

But his name was omitted at the last stage of the screening for FIFA to pick centre referees from Cote D’Ivoire (two), Gambia (two), South Africa (one), Cameroon (one) and Algeria (one).

The world governing body also selected one assistant referee each from Burundi, Cote D’Ivoire, Algeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Rwanda, Morocco and Kenya

  • ‘Sunshine ‘ve quality replacement for Kwambe, Ikenna, Odunlami’

‘Sunshine ‘ve quality replacement for Kwambe, Ikenna, Odunlami’

Newly appointed chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Akin Akinbobola is confident Sunshine Stars will not be under pressure to get worthy replacement for the the trio of Solomon Kwambe, Ikenna Hilary and Kunle Odunlami (players of Sunshine Stars) who are members of the Super Eagles African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad.

According to the former member of the Nigeria Premier League Board, the Akure Gunners is braced for their imminent exits.

“Solomon Kwambe, Ikenna Hilary and Kunle Odunlami are still players of Sunshine Stars and like any other club we are braced for their pending departures in the future.

“The club is currently observing its pre-season in Ijebu-Ode and I can assure that we have quality players. When the likes of Kwambe came to the club, they were unknown but now they are household names, the same process that brought them in will bring their replacements,” he told Lagos-based Brila FM.

Speaking on preparations for the forthcoming Glo Premier League campaign, Akinbobola admitted that the League Management Company (LMC) was doing a good job but also noted that next month’s commencement of the new season was rather late.

“The LMC remains a child of circumstance and a stop-gap arrangement but I must say they have not done badly, let’s just say so far so good.

“I am hoping the LMC improves this season and at the end we have elections and have a true league board in place.”

Meanwhile, Akinbola expressed doubts regarding the LMC’s new salary regulation which mandates clubs to pay players a minimum of N150, 000 a month as salary.

“N150,000 may be tough for clubs to pay. For me, I think it may still happen even though clubs may struggle to do it on a consistent basis but they say a journey of a thousand miles always starts with one step,” Akinbobola said.

  • OPERATION CRUSH KENYA No replacement for Efe Ambrose

OPERATION CRUSH KENYA No replacement for Efe Ambrose

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi will not replace defender Efe Ambrose who has been ruled out of the World Cup qualifier against Kenya due to accumulated cautions.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) disclosed last week that the Scotland-based defender will not be part of the contingent as he is on suspension as a result of accumulated yellow cards from previous World Cup qualifying matches.

Media officer of the team Ben Alaiya said there are no plans to call up a replacement for Ambrose, as the team gets set for next weekend’s game.

“There will not be any fresh invitation to replace Ambrose,” Alaiya told futaa.com.

“We have enough players in camp to play in his position.”

Nigeria, who sit on top of the group with four points, will play Kenya on March 23, 2013 at the UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar.

  • Maccabi Tel Aviv shops for Enyeama’s replacement

Maccabi Tel Aviv shops for Enyeama’s replacement

Speaking after the 2 – 2 draw with Hapoel Haifa in a cup match played on Tuesday, Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Oscar Garcia has hinted that the club will recruit a goalkeeper in the January transfer window to provide cover for Vincent Enyeama, who is expected to be named in the Super Eagles party to the 2013 African Cup.

”We look and look. Need to believe that Barak Levy is a young and good goalkeeper, but we will decide next month, Vincent will be in Africa and will have only one goalie, so maybe,” Garcia was quoted as saying by Sports Walla.

Vincent Enyeama will miss at least five league games – against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Ashdod, Hapoel Acre, Hapoel Ramat Gan and Hapoel Tel Aviv – if Nigeria qualifies for the last four of Africa’s premier soccer competition.

The Nigeria numero uno is under contract with The Yellows until the end of the season.
