    Ambrose may get Champions League reprieve

    Efe Ambrose’s Celtic could be handed a sensational Champions League reprieve after UEFA launched an investigation into the eligibility of one of Legia Warsaw’s players during their 6-1 aggregate win over the Scottish champions.

    The Polish side confirmed that they had been asked for information from the European governing body.

    A statement on Legia’s official website read: “The club announces that in connection with the Celtic FC-Legia Warsaw match in the second leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions League, UEFA opened an investigation into the participation of Bartosz Bereszynskiego.

    “The club is preparing the relevant information and explanations, which will be sent to UEFA today.

    “The result of the investigation will be announced immediately after its completion.”

    Nigeria’s Eaglets get CAF reprieve

    Nigeria got some  much-needed  reprieve after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) moved the Golden Eaglets African Junior Championship qualifier in DR Congo this weekend by a week.

    CAF yesterday moved the 2015 African U17 Championship qualifying match between Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, set for Lubumbashi,from Sunday,July 20 to Sunday, July 27.

    CAF’s decision comes as a welcome relief to the Nigeria Football Federation,whose officials patiently await positive communication from FIFA on the suspension clamped on the country on July 9, due to a court order barring the Aminu Maigari–led executive committee from functioning.

    On Wednesday evening, in Jos, the case was withdrawn by the plaintiff, yesterday, the NFF communicated same to FIFA, praying the suspension be lifted since the principal reason for the clampdown had been met.

    In its letter to the NFF, the Federation Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA), FECAFOOT and the match officials, CAF declared that it was granting the grace of seven days with high hopes that the suspension on Nigeria would be lifted in a couple of days.

    “Following the suspension of Nigeria Football Federation by FIFA few days ago, please be informed that CAF is hopeful that an end to this crisis will be found soon,” the CAF statement read in part.

    “However, in view of the upcoming match scheduled between DR Congo and Nigeria U-17 national teams on July 20th, 2014 in Lubumbashi,we wish to ensure that the African youth players maintain their chance of playing competitive football for their respective countries.

    “As such, please be informed that CAF decided to postpone the above mentioned match from July 20th to July 27th, 2014.”

    The match is the first leg of a 2015 African U17 Championship qualifying fixture, and is Nigeria’s first step towards defending the world title they won in the United Arab Emirates last year. Venue of the match remains TP Mazembe Stadium, Lubumbashi, and kick-off is 3.30pm Congo time (2.30pm Nigeria time) on the new date.

  • 76 oil wells: Cross River may get reprieve

    The Federal Government may activate Section 5 (7) of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) Act to draw fund for Cross River State.

    The idea was mooted at the meeting on the resolution of the loss of the 76 oil wells by the Cross River State Government presided over by the Vice-President, Namadi Sambo.

    Present at the meeting were Governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), the RMAFC Chairman, the Director-General, National Boundary Commission (NBC), Mohammed Ahmed and other government officials.

    The meeting, which was held at the vice president Conference room at the State House, was at the instance of President Goodluck Jonathan.

    The meeting, which examined the judgment of the Supreme Court on the matter and the matters arising therefrom requested the RMAFC to suggest the way forward.

    A statement by Sambo’s media aide Sani Umar said: “The agencies have been meeting to find ways to advise the Federal Government on the need to provide succour to Cross River State due to the financial discomfort it suffered by the judgment of the Supreme Court.

    “The section stipulates that for the purposes of the Act and for avoidance of doubt, where any state suffers any loss which is outside its control, the Stabilisation Fund shall be used to give succor to such a state.”

    On the issue of Bakassi, Akpabio, who spoke to reporters at the end of the meeting, said challenges of insecurity in the region, the idea of humanitarian challenge and the aftermath of the ceding of Bakassi were discussed to find a peaceful way to accommodate all parties so that there will be peace in the region.

    On the issue of Nigeria buying over the peininsula, Akpabio said: “Anything that will give us an advantage of an additional territory I will be glad to support it.

    “It is also an alternative if the price is not too high if we can afford it why not? We can buy back because, Bakassi is too dear to our heart.

    “For instance, in the case of Akwa Ibom, we are still groaning because it is too close to us.

    “It is 40 minutes from one of our local councils. We really like Bakassi to come back to Nigeria.”

    The Saudi authorities have agreed to accept the deported pilgrims that have valid visas.

    House Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, who led the Presidential committee to Saudi Arabia broke the news yesterday at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport.

    According to the Speaker, the Saudi authorities is also considering Nigeria’s request for extension of the airlifting deadline.

    Tambuwal, who expressed happiness at the outcome of the meeting, also said the issue of male companion for female pilgrim was also settled as the Nigerian delegation made it known that the vexed issue is open to different interpretations from the four jurisprudences in Islam.

    He said: “Our interface with the Saudi authorities has been very successful because we had serious and deep engagement. The first good news is that all of those pilgrims who have secured valid visas are being taken back.

    Those in the delegation include the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sani Sami, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, Prof. Shehu Galadanchi, Chairman of Nigerian Hajj Commission (NAHCON), Alhaji Mohammed Bello and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed.
