  • Nigeria to feature in WADFU deaf football tournament in Mali – Coach

Banjo Kamiludeen, National Coach, Nigerian Deaf Football Association, says Nigeria will feature in the forthcoming West African deaf football tournament in Bamako, Mali, from May 6 to May 17.

Kamiludeen told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the team was battle-ready for the football fiesta organised by the West African Deaf Football Union (WADFU).

“We are going to take part in this year’s edition and I am very happy about it because we missed last year’s edition as a result of scarcity of fund and sponsor.

“We have confirmed our participation to the organisers and the players are working hard in camp to excel in the group matches and final stages of the competition,” he said.

He disclosed that its participation in the competition was made possible through the sponsorship of Emmanuel Ibru, a grand patron of the association, and described the funding as a “prayer answered”.

While applauding Ibru for the remarkable support, he promised that his team would re-assert itself as a force to be reckoned with in the football fiesta which would feature eight countries.

“The national team has been prominent in this competition since its inception in 2010 but lack of funds denied us participation last year.

“I really appreciate the tremendous support of our patron, Ibru, who has come to our rescue this time in spite of the situation of the country and the ongoing recession,” Kamiludeen said.

The coach noted that Nigeria was the leading country in Africa having won the trophy three times in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions hosted by Nigeria and Republic of Benin.

He added that the national team was known for its competence and determination which singled it out as the only team that had made it five times to the finals.

However, it was second in the 4th and 5th editions, held in 2014 and 2015 by Togo but was absent in the 6th edition hosted by Ghana in 2016.

  • EFCC to re-arraign two Beninoise for alleged N630m theft

EFCC to re-arraign two Beninoise for alleged N630m theft

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on October 31, re-arraign two citizens of the Republic of Benin, Gnanhoe Sourou Nazaire and Senou Modeste Finagnon, at the Lagos State High Court, Igbosere, for an alleged N630 million theft.

The commission yesterday filed an amended 12-count charge against the Beninoise before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo in Lagos, but their re-arraignment was stalled due to the absence of an English to French interpreter.

The defendants were first arraigned before Justice Taiwo on February 17, on a seven-count charge of forgery, stealing and conversion of N630m belonging to Mrs. Rachidatou Abdou and her company.

They pleaded not guilty and their lawyer, Rickey Tarfa (SAN), moved the court to strike out the charge on the ground of incompetency. He also argued that the EFCC was prosecuting them without a valid petition.

But, dismissing his application, Justice Taiwo upheld the contention of prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo that the Commission received a valid petition from the complainant alleging conspiracy and stealing against the defendants.

At the resumed hearing of the suit yesterday, EFCC counsel Kayode Oni informed the court of the amended charge and urged the court to allow it to be read to the defendants.

Defence counsel Tarfa did not object but requested for an interpreter since the defendants spoke only French.

Justice Taiwo granted his application but the prosecution was unable to provide an interpreter.

‘’We cannot proceed without an interpreter. The prosecution needs to expedite action in this case’’, Justice Taiwo added and adjourned till October 31.
