  • Edo PDP boycott today’s rescheduled election in Orhionmwon

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it would boycott today’s rescheduled election in Orhionmwon South constituency for the Edo State House of Assembly.

Election in the constituency was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the 12 polling units spread across three wards.

The Residents Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, said a winner could only be announced after the rescheduled elections.

The Chairman of the PDP in Orhionmwon, Barr. Nosakhare Ogieva-Okunbor, who announced the boycott at a press briefing yesterday evening, said the party has lost confidence in INEC.

Barr. Ogieva-Okunbor alleged that results favorable to the PDP were rejected by INEC, while manipulated results were accepted.

He said the party considered the boycott because the outcome of the rescheduled election was already determined.

According to him, “It is unfair to us and our candidate. Of what use is the participation in the election to us when the result is already determined.”

“The PDP in Orhionmwon will not participate in the election. The people of Orhionmwon voted for PDP but INEC in collaboration with APC has bastardized the results”

The PDP candidate in Orhionmwon South, Friday Ogierhiakhi, said he supported the boycott because INEC ignored all complaints made by the PDP.

Ogierhiakhi, who vowed to reclaim his mandate at the tribunal, said it was ridiculous for results from three units to be higher than results from 11 units.

Rescheduled elections will hold, IBB assures

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, yesterday expressed optimism that the rescheduled general elections will take place despite doubts expressed by Nigerians.

He also called for collective solution to the insurgency saying “it should not be seen as northeast problem but a problem of all Nigerians.”

IBB spoke to reporters at his Uphill residence in Minna after playing host to Arewa Citizen Action for Change (ACAC) – a non political organisation embarking on train- the- trainer programme on enhanced peaceful co-existence in the northern region.

Asked whether he has doubt on the possibility of the elections still holding following the last -minute postponement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Babangida said: “I have every confidence that there will be election”.

IBB, who was reluctant to answer questions, was initially not forthcoming when asked if rescheduling of the election will not affect its outcome.

He later simply said: “It will go on in a peaceful environment and it will have good outcome.”

On the insurgency challenge, he cautioned against reducing it to a north east affair.

According to him: “I think People should not see insurgency restricted to north east alone. It is the problem with the entire country; Nigeria is under insurgency not only north east.

“Nigerians should see it from that perspective and they support the military to end the insurgency.”

The former military leader told his guests to help in educating people on collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

    • Irate fans attack Referee Ozigbo

The fourth club that would be promoted to the Nigeria Professional Football League, the elite division in Nigeria could not be decided in yesterday’s rescheduled Nigeria National League (NNL) match between host Ranchers Bees and visiting Kwara United as the match was marred by alleged irate home team’s fans who attacked the center Referee Charles Ozigbo after calling for a penalty in favour of Kwara United in the 22nd minute of the match that was to be played for only 28 minutes.

The  match which was first played in Kaduna was marred by crowd violence when the game stood at 2-2 score draw. But the Appeals Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation ruled that the match be replayed in Abuja yesterday and that only the remaining 28 minutes left in the match before it was disrupted by fans’ violence should be played in Abuja.

But alas pandemonium broke out just six minutes to end the 28 minutes match when the irate home fans went for the injured Referee Ozigbo’s jogular for awarding a spot kick in favour of Kwara United. Ozigbo was injured with cudgels and stones while his head was covered with blood.

The Police at the venue did not come with canisters of tear gas and were not armed, giving the irate fans the opportunity to have a field day.

The NationSport’s reporter and others had to run for their dear lives while the 10 Policemen on guard tried all the tricks they had to save Referee Ozigbo and his colleagues’ lives.

The matter will again move to the corridor of the Nigeria Football Federation to finally rule on which team gains the promotion to the elite division of the Nigeria Professional Football League of Nigeria.

Ranchers Bees and Kwara United needed to win to be very sure of promotion a reason why the match was played under such undue tension and provocations.

The ugly scene was also watched by the invited foreign based professionals who had just trained. They were asked to stay behind to watch the match by their Coach Samson Siasia shortly after their morning session training.

The NNL promotion match between Ranchers Bees and Kwara United kicked off at exactly 10.32am at the Goal Project of the Abuja National Stadium yesterday (Friday).
