  • Resident seek expansion of Ikotun-Isolo road

Residents of Isolo, Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, Egbe, Ikotun and are worried over the incessant  gridlock between Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) Isolo and Ikotun roundabout.

They are urging the government to fix the potholes and expand the road, to ensure  free vehicular movement.

A resident, Daniel Diekola, said the traffic jam hindered business, adding that the bad road had forced many residents to relocate.

“The road is narrow. It discourages residents from doing business. In fact, some of them have left this area,” he said.

Diekola enjoined the government to prioritise the repair and expansion of roads linking communities.

A commercial motorcyclist, Tunde Owoiya, begged the government to expand the road.

He said: “It is impossible for two vehicles to move at the same time. This is one of the causes of the gridlock.”

Another resident, Jimoh Alli, said he almost abandoned his car on the road when a fuel tanker hit a Toyota Camry, causing traffic jam.

“I have resorted to riding commercial motorcycles, which is risky and costly. But I don’t have a choice because I prefer to beat the traffic, which builds up daily. I spend N1,000 to and from work everyday. How much is my earning? If I refuse to ride Okada, it means I am ready to stay in the traffic till midnight. The government needs to act fast because this is a road that links many communities,” he said.

Toyin Oyetola, said the government should stop tankers, especially those carrying containers, from plying the road.

  • Presidency to Jonathan: Stop playing the ostrich

The Presidency on Thursday rejected former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s claims that there is more corruption in the country compared to when he left office in 2015.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said that the claim was absolutely untrue.

He said “The facts on the ground today run contrary to his outlandish claim.

“President Muhammadu Buhari, in pursuit of the war against corruption, has set a number of local and international records, one of which is to call judicial officers in Nigeria to account.

“He is the first to set such a record. Not only that, this is the first time that top military commanders and Service Chiefs are brought to trial and convictions were achieved on account of corruption.

“Also, this is the first time a ruling party is convicting high profile citizens including former governors, who are members of same party.

Read also: Alleged graft: I never sent Kukah to beg Buhari, says Jonathan

“This is the first time the international community is acknowledging the efforts of a government of Nigeria in this regard as manifested by the selection of President Buhari by the African Union as the Anti-Corruption Champion of the continent.

“For the records, this is the first time a ruling party is investigating ranking officers of the administration, including some at the very top.” he said

Apart from the many firsts recorded by President Buhari’s administration, he said that the government has introduced a lot of changes, considering that the laws relating to the fight against corruption cannot reasonably be static.

In line with its aspiration to be ahead of the growing sophistication of corruption and financial crimes, he said that the administration has initiated new legislations and proposed amendments to different sections of laws.

The laws, he said, included the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2017; Anti-Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2017; Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit Bill 2017 (NFIU); Proceeds of Crime Bill 2017.

Others are the Public Interest Disclosure and Witness Protection Bill, 2017 and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill, 2017.

He added “Owing to these efforts and support all of relevant stakeholders, NFIU Act has been passed and President Buhari gave his assent on July 18, 2018. The administration is currently working with the legislature for an expedited passage of the Proceeds of Crimes Bill to make the anti-corruption war more effective.

“Nigerians should dismiss Dr. Jonathan’s hollow boast that he, not President Buhari, introduced schemes such the Biometric Verification Number (BVN), Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPS).

“Of what use is the announcement of good policies without the will to implement them?” he queried

Since President Buhari assumed office, he said that Nigerians are witnesses to the huge success recorded through the implementation of the TSA where some government agencies that had over the years remitted peanut amounts or nothing at all are now periodically pumping billions into government coffers.

“Prominent among these remittances include the ones made by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigeria Customers Service (NCS) and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

“While it is also true that the BVN was introduced in 2014 to ensure that all bank accounts have biometric identification of their owners, the lack of will and capacity under Dr Jonathan stalled implementation.

“Today, BVN covers nearly all bank accounts. There are still some individuals who have shielded their identity and are now afraid of enrolling on the BVN platform as this will expose them and their corrupt actions. The law is going after them.

“President Buhari’s administration introduced the whistle-blower policy as a veritable tool against corruption as it gives individuals an opportunity to expose corruption, fraud, bribery, looted government funds, financial misconducts, government assets and any other form of corruption or theft.

“Within six months of introducing this policy, over 5,000 reports were made through various channels, 365 actionable tips were received out of the 5000 reports. So far more than N200bn has been recovered.

“As the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation,  Abubakar Malami (SAN),  said on Thursday, the former President does not have the facts to claim that there was any serious effort on the part of his administration to fight corruption.

“As at 29th May 2015, when this administration came into office, the EFCC recovery account had only N19.5 billion as revealed by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General. After one year of the new anti-corruption drive by the Buhari administration, this figure had gone up to N279 billion, and since then a lot more has been recovered.

“Finally, as evidenced from a fleeting look at the book, the former President had nothing to say about his own achievements. If there was a recession, and yes we had a moment in it, was it due to one year of President Buhari’s government?

“In his efforts to blame everyone but himself for his failures, Dr Jonathan heaped the blame for the predictable economic recession on President Buhari, ignoring the seeds sown under him through mismanagement and the process set in firm roots for the decline of the economy. Evidently, he did nothing to avert the situation.

“As we have explained over and over, the recession in 2016 was caused by years of mismanagement and corruption. In the 16 years of PDP and earlier than that, the country solely relied on oil, the price of which was as high as 140 USD per barrel under their watch. Government simply reticulated oil revenue through personal spending by corrupt leaders, wasteful expenses and salaries; rather than investing in what would grow the economy. There was no investment in infrastructure as President Buhari is now doing in seaports, airports, power plants, railways, roads and housing.

“The oil windfall for the country was mismanaged, and Nigeria’s greatest opportunity for growth was turned into a tragedy. More worrisome, there were no savings. And to compound the problem and compromise growth of the economy, the previous government borrowed heavily, owed contractors and international oil companies. When President Buhari came into power in 2015, the country had accumulated debt, which took it back to the level it was before the Paris Club Debt forgiveness. Nigeria did not have fiscal buffers to withstand an oil shock when oil prices fell to as low as 28 USD.

“The oil shock should and could have been foreseen. When visionary Nigerians and economists foresaw this and warned of the dangers ahead, Dr Jonathan hounded such men as the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi 11 and Professor Chukwuma Soludo. Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance under Dr Jonathan’s administration also warned and she was rebuffed.

‘The former President and his party have nothing to say about achievements. They ruled the country for 16 years and what is their record on jobs, power, rail, seaports, airports and internal security, including the crippling disaster of terrorism?” he queried

  • Resident doctors fail to call off strike

Resident doctors fail to call off strike

Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) yesterday failed to call off their strike, which enters the eighth-day today, in line with terms of settlement signed with the Federal Government.

The association signed a memorandum of terms of settlement with government four days ago.

After a meeting, which started at about 1.30pm on Wednesday and ended at about 3.30am on Thursday morning, the government and the doctors agreed that NARD members should hold their NEC meeting on Friday to call off the strike.

But 48 hours after the supposed meeting to call off the strike, the doctors have continued to keep silent about the industrial action, fueling speculations that they may have again rejected the terms of settlement signed with government.

One of the terms of settlement was for the doctors to meet on Friday once they started receiving alert for the shortfall in their salaries, which was one of their grievances.

As at 6.00pm yesterday, efforts to get officials of the association to comment on why they have not called off the strike failed as none of them respond to call put through to their phones.

Part of the resolution contained in the memorandum of terms of settlement was the payment of the shortfall of salaries, capturing the resident doctors on the IPPIS payment platform, implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for members, among others.

The memorandum, which the doctors were to present to their National Executive Committee, was signed by Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of Health  Prof. Isaac Adewole, Minister of State, Labour and Employment Prof. Stephen Ocheni, National President of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Prof. Mike O. Ogirima, NARD President Dr. Onyebueze John and Chairman of the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Chief Richard Egbule.

Other signatories to the memorandum were representatives of Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Budget Office of the Federation.

  • Many injured in LUTH management, resident doctors row

Many injured in LUTH management, resident doctors row

MANY people were injured in a physical confrontation yesterday between officials of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the hospital’s resident doctors under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD).

Those injured are receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency unit.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, (CMAC), Prof. Olufemi Fasanmade, said the resident doctors mobilised their members and other unknown persons to lay a siege to the apartment that serves as the ARD Secretariat and inflicted bodily harm on the security agents and Civil Defence men.

Fasanmade said one operative sustained facial bruises and another was stabbed.

It was also confirmed that many ARD members were injured.

Fasanmade said: “They are receiving treatment at our Accident and Emergency Department. The Police were thereafter invited to restore law and order and prevent damage to Federal Government’s property.

“By the time the police arrived, the resident doctors had destroyed the locks on the secretariat’s doors  and manned it with their members and other paid thugs.”

Narrating what led to the crisis, Fasanmade said: “LUTH has been repeatedly invaded by unknown, non-LUTH persons invited by some persons in LUTH with the intention of causing trouble within the hospital. This group, acting under the directives of Dr. Adebayo Sekumade, one of our trainees, brazenly threatened senior officials of the hospital in the name of the Association of Resident Doctors (LUTH Branch).

“They have been holding clandestine meetings in the ARD Office at the Marble Hall of LUTH. The Management of LUTH had given the ARD a six-month notice to quit the premises about six and a half months ago.

“They were to relocate to over six alternative locations (which are being used by the resident doctors at no charge) within the hospital. A reminder and seven-day notice was sent to them over a week ago and the management made effort to repossess the premises used as ARD Secretariat two days ago. They resisted and that is the reason behind the fracas.”

A member of the ARD, LUTH Branch confirmed that the hospital served the association notices to quit.

“But since the establishment of this hospital, the space had been assigned to the Association of Resident Doctors (LUTH Branch). So, why is it that Prof. Bode’s administration wants to eject us?” asked the source rhetorically.

The source said the hospital is dead as most of its functional high-tech equipment have packed up.

“Not only that, Chief Medical Director, Prof. Bode, is withholding union monies to cripple unionism. It is sad,” said the source.

  • Before resident doctors are pilloried

SIR: I have listened to the media claiming they are always on the side of the oppressed anytime doctors embark on strike. They argue from the side of the members of the public who are the victims of government’s arrogance and neglect to our health sector. I wonder why the same members of the press have equally refused to be on the side of the doctors now that another national strike is looming.  As usual, agreements have in the past been reached but our insensitive government has severally reneged on her promises.

Among the demands of the National Association Of Resident Doctors (NARD) are: roadmap and timeline for the implementation of the National Health Act signed into law in 2014; timeline for the revamping of health facilities and equipment; immediate release and implementation of the white paper on residency programme; payment of December 2015 salary to doctors in FMC Owerri who were not on strike but locked out by Federal Ministry of Health; release of the circular on house officers/medical officers entry level as agreed since 2013 but yet to be released;  stop all attempts to remove relativity between the salary of doctors and other health workers as well stop all moves to revert/reverse skipping for doctors; immediate reinstatement of members sacked unduly without recourse to the circular on the employment/tenure ship of resident doctors and the 2010 high court judgement on tenure ship of resident doctors in favour of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Sagamu; stoppage of all victimization of unions, union leaders and members in line with the high court judgement, the labour law, circulars on relationship with unions and membership to unions in the interest of industrial harmony; and immediate enrolment of residents into IPPIS with their appropriate skipped salary grade level.

I urge the members of the press to make these demands known to the public and our insensitive government because very soon the resident doctors will embark on a nationwide strike.

Oyo residents urged to support Ajimobi

Oyo State residents have been urged to  keep supporting the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration, especially in the face of economic hardship.

Caretaker Chairman, Ibadan North West Local Government Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun gave this admonition during a pre-Ramadan lecture and distribution of food items to Islamic faithful and 200 mosques in the council area at the Onireke Secretariat, Ibadan.

The council boss stressed the need for residents of th state to key into the repositioning and restoration agenda of the state government.

He added that the food items were distributed to complement the effect of the state government in ensuring that the Ramadan fast is observed conveniently.

Olatunbosun assured the people of better lives and improvement in the infrastructural growth of the area.

“Several measures have been put in place by the state government to boost security in all areas of the local government. I urge Muslims to use the Ramadan period to pray for Nigerians and the state to progress” he said

Alhaji Abeeblahi Buhari, in his sermon, called on Muslims to adhere strictly to the teaching of Almighty Allah and abide by his instructions.

“We should all imbibe the culture of give and take and we should be God fearing and have attitudinal change” Buhari said

He said the Ramadan period is a time to move closer to God and renew Muslims’ commitment to His service.

  • Resident doctors at LUTH suspend strike

Resident doctors at LUTH suspend strike

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idiaraba, yesterday suspended its strike after a congress decision.

This is contained in a statement by Dr Ramon Moronkola, the association’s president in Lagos.

According to Moronkola, the decision was based on appeals by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president; elders of the profession; civil society groups; and other Nigerians.

The statement said work would resume at 8 a.m. today.

“The Association of Resident Doctors, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), hereby suspends her ongoing strike action by congress decision.

“It is our hope that the hospital’s management will reciprocate this gesture by adhering to the terms of agreement.

“This should be by ensuring smooth implementation of the Federal Government’s directive on the adjusted grade level, amongst other local issues, which have lingered for too long.

“While we reaffirm the legitimacy of our demands, we appreciate members of the public who were the direct victims of this impasse for their understanding and constructive criticism.

“We hereby call on the Federal Government to institute a probe into the immediate and remote cause(s) of this seemingly recurrent crisis in the health sector in a bid to putting an end to it.

“This particular strike could have been averted since. This is because the Federal Government, through a circular from the Office of the Head of Civil Service, issued on the Dec. 19, 2013, adequately addressed the issue,’’ the statement said.

On Monday, June 29, the ARD of LUTH commenced an indefinite strike over working conditions at the hospital.

  • Strange water: Residents of Kebbi community throng muddy stream they claim has curative powers

Strange water: Residents of Kebbi community throng muddy stream they claim has curative powers

A MUDDY water at the outskirt of Yari village in Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State has become a ‘Mecca’ of sorts. All sorts of people now throng the muddy stream owing to the claims by the people of the village that it has healing or curative powers.

According to sources, the muddy water, which flows from a rock in the sleepy village, located about 30 kilometres away from the state capital, Birnin-Kebbi, was not accorded any significance until an elderly resident of the village gave the water to her sick pregnant daughter in-law and she allegedly received instant healing.

If that was regarded as a fable by some people, a further confirmation of the powers of the water soon came when a blind woman allegedly regained her sight after bathing with the strange water.

And before you could say Jack Robison, news of the healing powers in the water travelled far and beyond, leading to serious scramble by hundreds of people to get a little drop of the water.

Ironically, before the strange discovery, Unguwar Yari, despite its short distance from the state capital, was just another little dot on the map of Kebbi State. But all that has become history now, as the village has become a serious topic of discussion among the people of the state, with more and more people eager to confirm the efficacy or otherwise of the strange water.

When our correspondent visited Unguwar Yari, the residents confirmed the story and all agreed that the water was a blessing from God. The village head, who said the state Director of Health drank from the water when he visited the village, confessed that he was happy to witness the ‘blessing’ during his own reign.

19-year-old Fatimah Muhamadu, who said she had been sick for about 12 years, claimed she was healed after she drank the water from the stream.

The Chairman of Jega Local Government Area, Haruna A. Haruna Mai Jega 111, said he had visited the site with a team of medical practitioners to ascertain whether the water was germ-free or not.

He said the team discovered that the water contained no germ, and that the government had put in place measures to ensure that unscrupulous people do not turn the water to a business venture.

How we accidentally discovered the strange stream —Village head

THERE is a story of a miracle water with healing powers in the village. How true is this?

Yes the story is true. But the real story of its discovery was accidental. A girl who had been ill for a long time, even after visiting several hospitals, was healed after drinking the water. The mother of the girl went to the bush to get herbs. But after she saw the water gushing out of the rock, she had an instinct that she should take home the water and give to her daughter. But we believe that it was God that made the healing possible through the water. The woman said she decided to keep the miraculous healing to herself until she became uneasy and started having a feeling of guilt. But since she came out to tell her story, people have been rushing to the stream to get the water. Another man who was suffering from asthma also drank the water and got healed. The man has stopped his daily use of inhaler since then.

Aside from these ones, a woman who was blind received her sight after she washed her eyes with the water. Also, a mad man was brought to the stream. He became normal after her was washed with the water.

Like how many people do you think visit this place every day since the discovery?

Since the discovery, we have at least 2000 people who come here every day to get the water. Some use it here, while others bring containers to take the water to their homes. People come from as far as the Niger Republic to get the water.

What is the village doing to control the number of people who rush to get the water?

A committee has been set up to ensure a proper maintenance of the vicinity of the water.

  • Calabar suburbs’ residents groan

    Calabar suburbs’ residents groan

Residents of satellite towns in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, are complaining about insecurity and other challenges, writes NICHOLAS KALU, Calabar.

Calabar, the Cross River State capital, is generally believed to be most peaceful city in the country, with arguably the lowest crime rate. However, for residents of Satellite Town adjoining the University of Calabar, a whole more needs to be done about security before they would come to terms with this assertion. The satellite town in Calabar Municipality was developed in the early 2000s as the pace of development picked up in the capital city, especially due to the new tourism slant of the state government. Its growth was propelled by the need for expansion. Within a few years an area which was overgrown with bushes had metamorphosed into a choice suburb. The beauty and tranquillity of this enclave is gradually turning into a nightmare for residents. The deplorable situation is ironically fed by a good road network and nice location. Residents of the area lament that the poor state of security in the area is stifling the positive attributes of their once cherished environment. One of the residents of the area who gave his name as Felix Ibanga said common criminalities in the area include armed robbery, kidnapping, mugging and rape. “We know these incidents occur in other parts of the city, but the rate at which these things happen here within the satellite town is so worrisome,” said Ibanga, who had been the victim of a recent armed robbery incident in the area recounted.

“Recently I was a victim of a robbery incident. The boys who were carrying out the raid took their time, like they felt nothing was going to happen as they robbed from house to house on my street. It was a long time after they had left that the police arrived. These cases have been frequent and on the increase and are really giving many of us a cause for worry. We have endured it for a long time and I think it is time something decisive be done about it. We need more security presence in this area.”

It was gathered that the situation had led to the emergence of vigilante groups in the area but these had fizzled out as it was not helping the situation.

Thomas Akan, another resident of satellite town, said: “We actually agreed that we did not want the vigilante groups anymore because the rate of crime in the area was not reducing with their coming. In fact we were worried these groups of boys with machetes and other crude weapons were also getting involved in these nefarious acts.”

A female resident of the area, Mrs Affiong Ekpang, also said: “Robbery, rape and other incidents are very rampant around here. By God’s grace I have never been a victim of any but something must be done urgently about it. If the police could have more presence here from the evenings even up to the early mornings I believe it would go a long way to save us from this situation. The feeling of fear we live with in this area is not comforting at all.

“Just the other day a neighbour who was just taking a walk close to his house was mugged by some of these criminals and it was just about 6 pm. He was seriously beaten up and his phone and some money taken from him. How can one live in an area where he or she is not safe to walk about when it is not even dark yet. In fact many of us would have relocated from this area if not that the houses we lived in here are our own. The situation demands urgent attention.”

Another resident, who simply gave his name as Samuel also, said: “The boys, I don’t believe come from here. They come from the Edim Otop community and Esuk Utan village which is close by the river side. So they move around about 6 or 7 and come to wait for their victims. Sometimes they wait for you and as you drive in they come in and attack. You cannot move around there by 7 o’clock alone. The police presence is poor. They don’t come. We have only had vigilantes who come to extort money and go. Most of them before 10 they have even gone. Vigilantes some of them are even accused of organizing the crime themselves. For some time now they have not been there. Most nights we hear serious shootings by robbers who come on operations. It is very scary.

“It has been happening on a daily basis. We hear gunshots. I would not say the situation is really out of control but we need security. If they can be coming on patrol and stay even up to 11 o’clock it would help as the criminals would know there is always security.

“They should gather to infuse fear in the boys, because what happens is that the boys have a field day. They have the whole night to themselves and nobody comes to harass them so they have time to carry out their nefarious activities. Once I had to text a friend to call the police because they were robbing my neighbour. They could not get access to me because of the kind of security doors I have in my place. We have even on some occasions had broad daylight robberies in this area.”

Commissioner for Police, Kola Sodipo, attributed the rising spate of criminal activities in Satellite town and other areas in the Calabar metropolis to the clampdown by security agencies on militants, oil thieves and sea pirates along the waterways.

He said: “While offences against public order and or law enforcement measures reduced from 151 true cases in 2012 to 116 in 2013, offences against property like armed robbery, theft, house/store breaking, obtaining under false pretences and cheating increased. Kidnapping and attempted murder cases also increased.

“This can be attributed to the enforcement measures against militants, bunkering and sea pirates along Calabar wetlands resulting in upsurge of criminality along Atimbo, Satellite Town and Uwanse areas of the Calabar metropolis.”

He however said they were equal to the task of checking the menace. He also called for more support of the civil populace in providing information as this had paid off in the past in fighting crime.

  • Ibadan residents relish infrastructure upgrade

    Ibadan residents relish infrastructure upgrade

Residents of Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, have continued to applaud the infrastructure upgrade in the city.

There is a predominant feeling that the ancient city is undergoing a massive makeover, the latest effort being the inauguration of the Mokola fly-over bridge.

A day to the launch of the historical facility, residents of the city were in high spirits. They had waited to see the bridge commissioned so that the difficulties experienced on the ever busy road will come to an end. To show their eagerness and preparedness for the event, all the traders, artisans, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada, and members of the business community declared a work-free day to be part of the epoch-making event which attracted both the high and low in the society.

All the major markets in the city were closed, while the traders in these markets came out en masse to attend the event. Some were decked in Ankara uniform, others donned peak caps and T-shirts bearing the portrait of Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Their city was changing and they were happy about it. Some have been converted to dual-carriage ways and beautified. Jobs are created. The state capital is looking neater and healthier. There is better access to quality health and education. Transportation and commerce have improved, while peace and order have been restored.

The amazed audience was wondering how the governor was able to achieve these feats within two years in office when past governors failed to accomplish much in four years or more. Some have asked “where did the governor get the money to execute this project”. But that is the kind of governor they have been yearning for after many years of stagnation and bad governace.

The commissioning of the flyover was accompanied by two other multi-million naira projects; the ultra modern market at Scout Camp, and the new Garage Modern Motorpark, Ibadan.

The people’s faces glowed in appreciation for the good work of the governor. Now, there is unfettered movement of people, goods and services in most areas of the city as a result of a good road network.

That the Mokola fly-over bridge, the first to be accomplished in the last 35 years by any civilian administration was successfully constructed and completed within a span of two years was still a like a dream to many.

Indeed, for an average motorist, Mokola Roundabout was a no-go area most especially during peak hours, with a journey from Dugbe to Ojoo which should not take 20 minutes, taking  not less than  two hours. A commercial motorist, Kazeem Adelaja,  said  he always prayed in the morning not to be hooked up in the vehicular bottleneck so as not to waste precious time and fuel in the process.

He said: “The Mokola Roundabout is a problem to an average motorist in this city, and we often find out that the bottleneck is caused by impatience on the part of the road users. On my part, I always tried everything to avoid the place so that at the end of the day I would not waste my money burning fuel unnecessarily.”

Senator Ajimobi who described   the  road as critical in the transportation network of Ibadan in terms of commerce, education and overall well-being of the citizens, said  the flag-off  of the construction of the bridge on the  ever-busy Sango-Mokola-Dugbe Road, was a testimony of his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the citizens of the state live a better life.

The governor who visibly expressed joy to be a vehicle of transformation, said: “It is a testimony to the fact that we desire good and robust life for the people of Oyo State. This particular flyover was conceived as part of the overall vision and mission of this administration to restore, reposition and transform the state and her citizen’s transportation to higher efficiency and effectiveness.

“The completion of the bridge is expected to translate to less stressful journey for her citizens, especially the people of Ibadan and visitors to the state capital.”

As early as 7.00 am, a large crowd of ordinary people thronged the Mokola area  with most of them singing and drumming to celebrate what they called a “monumental and unprecedented achievement” in the history of the state. Twisting their bodies to the sweet drum-beats by local drummers who thronged the venue of the event, the people could not hide their excitement.

given the harrowing experience that they had suffered in the past and lauding the government for coming to their rescue.

The elated former governor of Lagos State, and National leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) in his address lauded Governor Ajimobi whom he described as an actualiser, performer and

extra-ordinary leader in Oyo State, for the project which he said would impact positively on the lives of the people of the state. He particularly commended the Ajimobi administration for making the people the cornerstone of its economic policy, saying “we all can see developments in all ramifications’’.

Senator Tinubu who told the people of the state that the flyover bridge and all the projects inaugurated were just tips of the iceberg, assured that more good things would still come while

lampooning those who he said had had the opportunity of presiding over the affairs of the state but failed woefully, but who were now forming “an unholy alliance’’, stating that their alliance would fail as the people of the state were now wiser and could read between the lines.

He said,  ” I read recently that some of them were collaborating, the old enemies who dealt themselves out of office with guns, cudgels, sticks, and cutlasses. They say they want to collaborate again, ah!

They have failed because they will fail now again.  They were down before, they were down again. No matter what evil they put together they will continue to collapse like a pack of cards. If they forget,

we helped them before,  let their conscience tell them. I Bola Ahmed Tinubu did what I have to do to protect the integrity, the character , the content of our democracy and the freedom of our people through him, but what did they pay back? Today, here we are .  They left the

office of the governor in shambles and they return the state backward and rotten. Now, the office is clean, free and you see rapid progress, you see a government that made the people the cornerstone of economic policy. You see civilization in Ajimobi administration.

You see restoration, you see commitment and radical transformation and

urban renewal. They even refused to paint the buildings in the Secretariat where they work. They were enemy of progress,  they were enemy of change and they were enemy of the people.”

Also speaking, Governor Okorocha, commended his Oyo State counterpart for transforming the state, particularly Ibadan where he said he built one of his schools taking care of indigent students while Governor Amosun congratulated the people of Oyo State for voting a “performer’’ as the governor, saying the result of their decision was the all-round transformation being witnessed in the state now.

Goodwill messages were also given by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Adejoke Oorelope Adefulire and the National President of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero among others.

Senator Ajimobi, in his address, said the bridge was a dream come true and a historical mileage in the state and berated the opposition whom he said embarked on a campaign of calumny since the day the construction of the bridge began, urging them all to acknowledge excellence wherever they saw one.

His words, “I remember that on Thursday, December 22, 2011, when we flagged off the construction of this fly-over bridge, we provoked the unbelief and disdain of cynics and political opposition. To them, the construction of the bridge was akin to building the biblical Towers of Babel, with its impossible tendencies.  Even when the bridge was being constructed, we became the butt of jokes of the opposition who, either out of mischief, naivety or their well-known cynicism, mocked the

absence of an erect bridge, months after its flag-off. Unknown to them, the essential components of the bridge, being mostly pre-fabricated, were undergoing construction in the company’s yard.

Now that the bridge has been completed, they have shifted their mischief to the cost of the project, choosing to ignore the comprehensive features of the project which among others include the upgrading of 1.2km long service roads and intersections, beautification of roundabout and space under the flyover, construction of new water mains, street lighting and the payment of compensation to the numerous property owners whose properties in this commercial centre of the city were affected. “

A resident, Mrs. Mojisola Babalola, after the commissioning was full of praises to Senator Abiola, for not only fulfilling a  promise to deliver on the project but also changing the landscape of the entire area making it one of the beautiful areas in the city of Ibadan. She said, “the governor indeed has etched his name in the heart of many people with the completion of this project and we could not but be grateful for the flyover bridge.”
